The safest Makita storage routine is model-specific: switch the tool off, remove the battery when your manual directs, keep both away from damaging heat, water and impact, and charge only within the temperature and compatibility limits in the tool and battery instructions. Makita U.S. manuals do not establish one universal storage temperature or state-of-charge percentage for every cordless platform.

The steps below use Makita U.S. guidance, including the RM02 and CBU01 manuals. Treat their numerical limits as applying to those products unless your own manual says the same thing.

The routine to follow after every use

  1. Switch the tool off and wait for moving parts or hot surfaces to stop and cool.
  2. Remove the battery for storage when the manual for your model requires it. The CBU01 manual specifically says to remove the battery from the tool or charger when it is not being used.
  3. Inspect the battery and tool for cracks, swelling, deformation, water exposure or impact damage. Do not use a visibly damaged battery.
  4. Put the tool and battery in a dry location where the temperature will remain below any limit in the applicable manual. The RM02 manual sets a maximum threshold of 50 °C (122 °F); that is a ceiling, not a recommended target temperature.
  5. If the battery is hot from work, let it cool before connecting it to a charger.
  6. Use only a compatible genuine Makita battery and charger, and follow the charging range and other instructions for that exact model.

This routine prevents the most avoidable storage failures without assuming that every Makita platform uses identical battery electronics or charging rules.

Find the right manual before choosing a storage rule

Makita sells cordless tools across multiple voltage and protection platforms. A recommendation printed in one manual can be narrower than the product family name suggests. Makita’s U.S. support instructions say to search its site by model number, open the product page, and use the available instruction manual or parts breakdown. Find the model number on the tool, battery, charger or its packaging before applying a temperature, removal or charging rule.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check both sides of the system: the tool manual can describe removal and operating precautions, while the battery or charger documentation can add charging conditions. If the instructions conflict, stop and ask Makita support or an authorized service location rather than combining the most permissive parts of each document.

What to record for future reference

  • Complete tool model, such as the model designation printed on the housing.
  • Battery model and voltage platform.
  • Charger model.
  • Any protection marking, including the Star Symbol or a yellow battery receiver.
  • Storage and charging limits stated in the current manual edition.

Keeping these identifiers with the tool avoids accidentally pairing a replacement battery or charger that looks similar but is not approved for that model.

Keep batteries and tools out of excessive heat

One Makita manual states: “Do not store the tool and battery cartridge in locations where the temperature may reach or exceed 50 °C (122 °F).” This wording appears in the RM02 instruction manual. It establishes a maximum for that product context; it does not define an ideal storage temperature for all Makita tools or lithium-ion batteries.

Places that can exceed the limit

  • A closed vehicle in direct sun.
  • An attic, shed or metal cabinet that heats rapidly.
  • A garage next to a heater, boiler, furnace or charging appliance.
  • Any enclosure where warm air cannot escape.

A hot garage is therefore acceptable only when you can establish that the tool and battery will stay within the applicable manual’s limit. If you cannot control or monitor the temperature, move them to a cooler indoor location. Do not leave a battery in a vehicle merely because the outside air feels moderate; the enclosed cabin can become much hotter.

Heat is not the same as the charging range

Storage and charging limits answer different questions. A manual may allow a particular maximum storage temperature while requiring a narrower range when current is flowing into the pack. Never infer a charging temperature from a storage limit.

Protect batteries from water, drops and impact

The cited Makita manual warns against exposing batteries to water and against dropping or striking them. Store packs where rain, condensation, wash water and leaking containers cannot reach them. Do not use a battery after a hard drop simply because its case appears intact; internal damage may not be visible.

Inspection before storage

  • Look for a split, bulge, crushed corner, loose casing or other deformation.
  • Check for evidence of liquid entry or corrosion.
  • Separate any pack that became unusually hot, emitted an odor or behaved erratically during use.
  • Do not open, puncture, modify or attempt to repair the battery yourself.

A damaged battery should not go back on a tool or charger. Follow Makita’s support or service instructions for evaluation and disposal.

Should you remove the battery from a cordless tool?

Follow the exact manual. The CBU01 manual says to remove the battery from the tool or charger when the equipment is not being used. Removing a pack also prevents an idle tool from slowly drawing energy and ensures the tool cannot start if a switch is moved accidentally while it is being stored.

Do not turn the CBU01 instruction into a universal rule for every Makita product without checking its manual. Some tools, accessories and charging systems have different operating procedures. When the manual is silent or unclear, remove the battery for extended storage and obtain model-specific confirmation from Makita support.

Short breaks versus storage

For a brief work break, place the tool in a safe, stable position and follow the tool’s operating precautions. For overnight, seasonal or otherwise idle storage, use the manual’s removal instruction and keep the separate battery in the protected environment described above.

Charge Makita batteries without stressing the pack

The CBU01 manual gives a charging ambient range of 10–40 °C (50–104 °F). This figure is from the CBU01 manual with 2026 publication metadata; it is not a blanket range for every Makita battery. If your model’s manual lists another range, use that range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the pack’s remaining power as the signal

Makita’s cited charging guidance says to charge before complete discharge, recharge when tool power drops, and avoid recharging a fully charged battery. In practical terms, stop work when the tool’s performance falls noticeably instead of repeatedly forcing the pack until it shuts down. Do not connect a full pack to the charger simply as a routine.

Cool a hot pack first

A battery that has just powered a high-load tool may be outside the permitted charging range even when the room itself is comfortable. Let the pack return to the manual’s allowed range before charging. Do not accelerate cooling with water, ice or other methods that could create condensation or damage the casing.

Can a Makita battery stay on the charger?

Makita’s U.S. FAQ says its chargers are designed not to overcharge lithium-ion batteries. It gives the DC18RC as an example: after a full charge, the charger enters maintenance mode and monitors the battery’s charge level. That describes the charger’s intended behavior, not permission to ignore the charger or battery manual. Use the specified compatible charger, place it in a suitable dry, ventilated location, and disconnect equipment when the applicable instructions tell you to do so.

Match the battery, tool and charger exactly

Makita warns that non-genuine or altered batteries can cause fire, injury or damage and may void the tool and charger warranty. A battery that physically slides into a tool is not automatically electrically or electronically approved for it.

Example: BL1850B compatibility

Makita identifies the BL1850B as compatible only with Star Protection tools marked with the Star Symbol and/or a yellow battery receiver. That example demonstrates why a model check matters: the battery name alone does not establish compatibility with every Makita 18 V tool.

When buying a replacement charger or battery

Decision point What to verify
Tool match The exact tool model and voltage platform appear in the battery or charger compatibility information.
Protection system Required markings, such as Star Protection, are present on both the tool and the approved battery combination.
Authenticity The battery and charger are genuine Makita units, not altered or unverified copies.
Charging conditions The replacement charger and battery manuals specify conditions your storage area and operating routine can meet.
Replacement purpose You are replacing a failed unit or adding a compatible spare, rather than trying to make an incompatible platform work.

Makita describes its Rapid Optimum Charger as communicating with the battery to monitor charging conditions. Product details and compatibility can change, so verify the exact charger model before buying a replacement or using one from another Makita platform.

What to do when a battery will sit unused for months

Long idle periods require a manual check rather than a universal percentage or calendar. The CBU01 manual advises charging a battery that has been unused for more than six months. That is a CBU01 instruction, not an established schedule for every Makita cordless battery.

A six-month storage check

  1. Write down the date the pack was put away and its model number.
  2. Before reconnecting it, inspect the casing for swelling, cracks, liquid damage or impact.
  3. Confirm that the room is within the charging range stated for that model.
  4. If the manual calls for charging after a period of non-use, charge with the specified compatible charger.
  5. Stop if the pack heats abnormally, shows a fault or will not charge, and contact Makita support or service.

No reviewed Makita U.S. source establishes one ideal long-term state of charge, humidity range or storage interval for all cordless platforms. Do not invent a target percentage from advice intended for another battery chemistry or model.

A practical storage setup by situation

Situation Action Reason and qualification
Tool used every week Switch off, remove the battery when the manual directs, inspect it and store both in a dry, temperature-controlled place. Uses the model’s removal rule while limiting heat, water and impact exposure.
Tool stored in a garage Measure or otherwise establish that temperatures cannot reach the applicable manual’s maximum; move the battery indoors if that is uncertain. The RM02 ceiling is 50 °C (122 °F), but it is not an all-model ideal.
Battery hot after work Let it cool naturally into the manual’s charging range before connecting it. The CBU01 charging range is 10–40 °C (50–104 °F).
Battery unused for over six months Check the exact manual; the CBU01 manual calls for charging after more than six months. The schedule is model-specific.
Battery dropped or visibly damaged Do not install or charge it; seek Makita support or service instructions. Damage can create a safety hazard that visual testing cannot rule out.
Unknown charger or battery pairing Stop and verify the model numbers and compatibility markings before use. Non-genuine, altered or incompatible products can cause fire, injury or damage.

Troubleshoot common storage and charging problems

The charger refuses to charge a recently used battery

First let the battery cool, then check whether the room and pack are within the charging range in the model manual. Inspect for damage and confirm that the charger is the specified compatible unit. Repeatedly reconnecting a hot or damaged pack is not a repair.

The tool was stored with the battery installed

Switch the tool off, remove the battery and inspect both. If the model manual requires removal during non-use, adopt that procedure from now on. If the tool is unexpectedly warm, shows a fault or the battery has lost unusual capacity, stop using it and request model-specific service advice.

The battery was left in a hot car

Do not charge it immediately. Move it to a dry, safe place, allow it to return to room temperature, and inspect it. If the temperature may have reached or exceeded the RM02 manual’s 50 °C (122 °F) ceiling, or if the pack is swollen, cracked or otherwise abnormal, do not use it; ask Makita support how it should be handled.

A replacement battery fits but the tool does not recognize it

Check the exact compatibility list, voltage platform and protection markings. The BL1850B example is limited to Star Protection tools identified by the Star Symbol and/or yellow battery receiver. Do not modify the battery, contacts or tool to force operation.

Recycle batteries through an approved route

Makita’s U.S. FAQ says batteries may be taken to a Makita Factory Service Center or a local recycling facility. It also identifies Call2Recycle as a way to locate a facility. Availability and handling requirements vary by locality, so check the instructions for your area before transport.

Do not put a damaged lithium-ion battery in ordinary household trash or leave it loose with other metal objects. Keep it isolated as directed by the service or recycling facility, and tell the facility that it is a rechargeable lithium-ion tool battery.

Limits of general Makita storage advice

Across the cited Makita U.S. material, there is no single published ideal storage temperature, universal long-term state-of-charge target or humidity range covering every cordless platform. The 50 °C (122 °F) storage ceiling comes from the RM02 manual, while the 10–40 °C (50–104 °F) charging range and six-month charging instruction come from the CBU01 manual. Use those figures only within their stated product context and let the manual for your own model control.

When a manual, battery label and charger documentation do not clearly identify a safe combination, the correct maintenance action is to pause, record the model numbers and contact Makita support or an authorized service location. That is safer than relying on a generic battery percentage, an unverified charger or a storage accessory that the manufacturer has not required.
