Keep emergency power equipment ready by following the exact owner’s manual, inspecting it between storms, recording every test and fault, and storing fuel-burning generators and battery power stations under their different safety requirements. Engine generators need fuel and service planning; battery stations need charge and environmental checks. Neither should be stored or tested according to a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Start with the equipment manual and a written readiness record

Before choosing a storage temperature, charge percentage, fuel treatment or test interval, identify the exact model and read its storage and maintenance sections. Limits vary with engine design, battery chemistry, charger, fuel system and intended load. Keep the owner’s manual, model and serial numbers, warranty information and service records with the equipment, either in a sealed pouch or in a clearly labeled household file.

Write down whether the unit is a portable fuel generator, a battery power station, or a battery station paired with solar panels. A product marketed as a “solar generator” may have no engine or fuel tank at all. Its storage rules will concern battery state of charge, temperature, humidity, charging input and ventilation rather than gasoline or engine oil.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a simple readiness log. Record the last inspection, last test, observed faults, fuel or battery status, service due date and accessories needed to operate the unit. FEMA Ready Business’ Power Outage Toolkit recommends a generator maintenance, operation and fueling plan; a household version of that plan prevents a storm-day search for cables, adapters, oil, approved containers or the correct charger. Note the rated output and the loads you intend to connect, so a test demonstrates the equipment you actually expect to use.

Inspect before storing

  • Look for cracked housings, damaged wheels, corrosion, frayed cables, loose terminals and missing covers.
  • Check that cooling inlets, exhaust paths and ventilation openings are unobstructed and free of dust or debris.
  • Confirm that required cords, adapters, grounding equipment, charging cables and manuals are present.
  • Check displays, switches, outlets and protective covers for signs of heat damage or moisture.
  • Do not operate damaged equipment. Follow the manual’s repair procedure or use qualified service support.

Store the paperwork and accessories where they remain accessible but protected from dampness. Label any dedicated extension cords, transfer equipment, fuel containers and battery chargers so another household member can identify the correct items without guessing.

How to store a fuel-burning portable generator

A gasoline, propane or other fuel-burning generator is an engine appliance, not simply a stored battery. Its readiness depends on fuel handling, engine condition, oil and the model’s prescribed storage procedure.

Choose a safe storage location

Store the generator itself in a clean, dry, protected place where it cannot be struck, flooded or exposed to corrosive vapors. Keep it away from living areas and ignition sources. Do not run or test it in that storage location unless the manual and local rules allow it and the location meets the outdoor ventilation requirements described below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the unit upright if the manual specifies that position, and leave enough clearance to inspect controls, cords and cooling openings. Do not cover an engine with a material that traps moisture or blocks ventilation when the unit is being prepared for use. A protective cover can keep dust off during storage, but remove it before starting and follow the manufacturer’s cover instructions.

Handle fuel according to the container and generator manuals

Ready.gov advises storing fuel safely and regularly checking emergency supplies. The agency’s guidance does not establish one gasoline shelf-life number that applies to every fuel formulation, container, climate or engine. Do not rely on a generic “fuel lasts X months” rule.

Use only containers approved for the fuel and follow local fire and building rules for where and how much fuel may be stored. The fuel-container and generator manuals determine whether fuel conditioning, draining or another preparation is appropriate for that model. A carburetor-draining instruction is not universal, and neither is a universal requirement to drain the tank. Never mix fuel types or additives unless the manufacturer specifies them.

Prepare the engine for its storage period

  1. Turn the generator off, let it cool completely and disconnect all loads.
  2. Clean dirt from the housing and around cooling and exhaust areas without forcing water into electrical parts.
  3. Check oil, filters, spark-plug access and other service items exactly as the manual directs.
  4. Complete the model’s specified fuel-storage procedure, which may involve approved fuel conditioning, fuel removal or neither.
  5. Store the unit upright and protected from moisture. Keep controls and outlets covered as the manual recommends.
  6. Write down what you did, the fuel status, the engine-hour reading if provided and the next service date.

Do not change oil, remove fuel or perform other maintenance on a hot engine. If the manual calls for a qualified technician, use one rather than improvising. Do not treat a successful start as proof that oil, filters, fuel lines and other scheduled service items are current.

How to store a portable power station

A portable power station is a rechargeable battery system, even when marketed as a “solar generator.” Solar panels may recharge it, but the stored-energy unit does not create carbon monoxide. It still needs protection from heat, moisture, dust, deep discharge and unsuitable charging conditions.

Use the exact model’s charge target

Charge targets are product-specific. A July 2, 2026 support article for Jackery portable stations recommends storing the station at about 80% and checking it approximately every three months, with a stated storage range of 10–40°C for the products covered by that article. A separate Jackery maintenance article advises keeping the battery at 50% for storage longer than three months, in a cool, dry area from 0–40°C and 0–60% humidity. These recommendations are not a universal battery rule and should not be averaged. Use the instructions for your exact model and battery chemistry when they differ.

The differing percentages illustrate why a label such as “portable power station” is not enough to determine a storage setting. Record the model number and the manual’s stated target in the readiness log. If the display uses bars rather than a percentage, use the manufacturer’s interpretation rather than estimating a level from the graphic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the station for long storage

  1. Turn off the station and disconnect every load, input cable and accessory unless the manual says a connection must remain.
  2. Clean the exterior with the method specified by the manufacturer; keep liquids out of ports, fans and switches.
  3. Charge or discharge to the model’s stated storage level. Do not deliberately store it at zero charge unless the manual explicitly permits that state.
  4. Place it in a cool, dry, protected indoor location away from water, heaters and direct sunlight.
  5. Leave ventilation openings clear and do not stack heavy objects on the unit.
  6. Set a calendar reminder for the model’s required inspection or recharge interval and record the date.

Do not leave a station in a parked vehicle for long-term storage when the manufacturer’s temperature range can be exceeded. A car can become much hotter or colder than the listed storage limits. Never charge, use or store the unit in a way the manual prohibits. Avoid placing it on a damp floor or under a roof leak, and keep dust from collecting around fans and charging ports.

How often should emergency equipment be tested?

The correct interval is the one in the equipment manual and, where applicable, the requirements for the installation or organization using it. CDC’s Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit — July 2026 recommends quarterly testing and annual servicing for generators used in vaccine-storage facilities. It gives the same cadence for backup battery sources while directing battery users to the manufacturer’s testing instructions. That is institutional preparedness guidance, not a universal household requirement.

Testing is different from simply switching a unit on. The model may specify a warm-up period, a minimum load, a self-test button, an inverter check or a particular shutdown sequence. Follow those steps exactly and record the result. An improvised long-duration or maximum-load test can create unnecessary wear or leave a battery at an unsuitable storage charge.

For a household fuel generator

Follow the model’s test-run duration, load requirement, warm-up and shutdown procedure. Test only outdoors in a location that meets the safety rules below. During the test, note starting behavior, unusual noise or smell, output warnings, oil or fuel leaks, voltage or frequency alarms and whether the intended loads operate. Stop immediately for a leak, damaged cable, smoke, severe vibration, alarm or other abnormal condition.

Let the generator cool before moving or covering it. Record the engine-hour reading when the unit provides one; that reading may control oil changes or other service in the manual. A test that reveals a fault should lead to repair and a documented retest, not repeated starting attempts until the storm arrives.

For a household battery station

Use the manufacturer’s test or self-check procedure. Confirm that the display, outlets, USB ports, inverter mode, charging input and any low-battery warnings behave as documented. A test does not justify running the battery to zero; preserve the model’s storage charge target and recharge it afterward if the manual requires it.

After every test

  • Record the date, duration, approximate load and result.
  • Write down error codes and photograph damage or warning displays.
  • Return the unit to its prescribed storage state.
  • Schedule service before the next storm if a fault, overdue interval or missing part was found.

Fuel generator versus battery station: maintenance decisions

Decision area Fuel-burning generator Battery power station
Stored-energy task Keep fuel handled safely and prepare the engine as its manual specifies. Maintain the model-specific state of charge and recharge-check schedule.
Maintenance burden Engine inspection, oil and service requirements, fuel-system preparation and run testing. Charge, connector, housing and environmental checks; follow the battery maker’s test procedure.
Operating environment Must operate outdoors with carbon-monoxide controls; protect from wet conditions. Respect the unit’s temperature, moisture, output and charging limits; it does not produce engine exhaust.
Storage risks Unsafe fuel storage, stale or unsuitable fuel, leaks and an engine that has not been serviced. Deep discharge, heat, water, blocked ventilation and storing outside the specified charge range.
Readiness test Run the prescribed engine test with the intended load and document faults. Use the model’s self-check or output test, then restore its required storage charge.

Neither category is universally best. Household load, expected runtime, noise tolerance, fuel availability, ventilation, weather exposure and the owner’s ability to perform maintenance all affect the choice. Compare the equipment against those needs rather than assuming a “solar generator” has the same upkeep as an engine. A fuel generator may require an outdoor operating location and safe fuel handling; a battery station avoids engine exhaust but remains limited by its rated output, runtime and environmental specifications.

Non-negotiable generator safety during a storm

Ready.gov’s portable-generator and winter-storm guidance says to operate a portable generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area away from doors, windows and vents, avoid wet areas and never refuel while it is running. CDC identifies generator carbon monoxide as odorless and colorless. Keep working carbon-monoxide alarms in the home, but do not treat an alarm as permission to place a generator indoors.

  • Never operate a fuel-burning generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed or partially enclosed space.
  • Keep exhaust directed away from the building and all openings, including windows, doors and vents.
  • Keep the generator dry and do not touch it with wet hands or while standing in water.
  • Shut it down and let it cool before refueling. Clean spills according to the fuel and generator manuals.
  • Connect appliances with the approved heavy-duty cords and ratings.
  • For connection to household wiring, use a qualified electrician and approved transfer equipment. Never backfeed a home through a wall outlet.

A between-storm maintenance schedule

After each use

  • Turn off and cool the equipment safely.
  • Inspect for damage, leaks, corrosion, overheating or error codes.
  • Clean and dry it as the manual permits.
  • Restore fuel or battery status using the model’s instructions.
  • Record runtime, load, faults and supplies consumed.

Every few months or at the model’s stated interval

  • Perform the prescribed test, not an improvised endurance test.
  • Check cables, adapters, fuel containers, battery charge and storage conditions.
  • Verify that carbon-monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers and weather protection are in place.
  • For battery stations, apply the exact model’s recharge-check interval; the approximately three-month check described by Jackery applies to the products covered by its article, not every station.

Annually or when the manual requires

  • Complete scheduled professional service for the engine or other equipment.
  • Replace parts only with specified replacements.
  • Review the household load plan, extension-cord ratings, transfer equipment and emergency contacts.
  • Update the readiness log and replace expired or damaged supplies.

For facilities following CDC’s vaccine-storage toolkit, the stated cadence is quarterly testing and annual servicing for generators and backup battery sources, with battery testing performed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

What to do when equipment fails a readiness check

The engine will not start

Stop repeated starting attempts. Check the manual for the permitted fuel condition, oil level, controls, overload reset and starting sequence. Look for a leak or damaged cable. If the prescribed checks do not resolve the problem, remove the generator from service and arrange qualified repair.

The battery station will not charge or drops rapidly

Use the specified charger and input, inspect ports and cables for damage and check the display for a documented error. Move the unit into the manual’s permitted temperature range before testing again. Do not open the battery enclosure or bypass a protection circuit; seek manufacturer service when the manual’s recovery steps fail.

The unit was wet, overheated or physically damaged

Disconnect it if safe, do not operate or charge it and keep people away from damaged batteries or fuel leaks. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and disposal instructions and use qualified service support. Drying a visibly damaged electrical unit and returning it to service without an inspection can create a shock, fire or equipment-failure hazard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storm-day checklist

  1. Confirm the generator or battery station passed its last documented test and is within its service interval.
  2. Move equipment to the planned operating location before severe weather, while keeping a fuel generator outdoors and dry.
  3. Check fuel containers, charging cables, extension cords, adapters and transfer equipment.
  4. Verify that carbon-monoxide alarms work and that all household members know never to bring a fuel-burning generator indoors.
  5. Disconnect sensitive loads before starting or changing connections, then add loads within the unit’s rated limits.
  6. Monitor for alarms, unusual sounds, overheating, smoke, leaks or damaged cords; shut down for any unsafe condition.
  7. After the outage, cool, inspect, document and return the equipment to its prescribed storage state.

Bottom line

Between storms, readiness is a documented routine rather than a single storage trick. Keep fuel generators dry and serviced under their own engine manuals, store fuel under container and local rules, and operate engines only outdoors away from openings. Keep battery stations clean, cool and dry, check their charge at the manufacturer’s interval and resolve conflicting percentages by following the exact model manual. Use CDC’s quarterly-test and annual-service cadence only in the institutional context for which it was issued, and base household schedules on the equipment’s instructions and actual condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store a generator between storms?

Keep the generator clean, dry, upright and protected from damage. Follow its manual for oil, fuel conditioning, fuel removal, covers and service. Store fuel only in approved containers under local rules, and record the fuel status and next service date.

How often should I test my backup generator?

Use the interval and test procedure in the owner’s manual. CDC’s July 2026 vaccine-storage toolkit uses quarterly testing and annual servicing for facility generators, but that cadence is not a universal household requirement.

What charge level should a portable power station have in storage?

Use the exact model manual. Jackery guidance includes both about 80% with a check about every three months and 50% for storage longer than three months, depending on the publication and product guidance. Do not average those figures or apply them to every brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I leave a portable power station in my car?

Not for long-term storage if the vehicle can exceed the station’s specified temperature range. Jackery’s cited guidance warns that parked-car temperatures may exceed its products’ storage limits.

Does a solar generator produce carbon monoxide?

A battery power station marketed as a solar generator does not create engine exhaust or carbon monoxide. A fuel-burning generator does, so operate it only outdoors away from doors, windows and vents.

Can I drain every generator’s carburetor before storage?

No universal carburetor-draining rule applies. Follow the specific generator manual; it may require fuel conditioning, fuel removal, or a different procedure.

What should I do if equipment fails a test?

Stop using it when there is a leak, smoke, severe vibration, damaged cable, warning alarm or other abnormal condition. Follow the manual’s troubleshooting steps, then arrange qualified service rather than repeatedly restarting or opening a battery enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a battery station maintenance-free between storms?

No. It still needs periodic charge checks, clean and dry storage, temperature control, unobstructed ventilation and the model’s prescribed self-test or recharge routine.
