Use the current manual for your exact portable power station before choosing a storage charge or interval. There is no single percentage that applies to every model. For example, one Jackery support article advises keeping more than 80% capacity, another Jackery maintenance page advises maintaining 50% for storage longer than three months, and the EcoFlow E980 manual specifies a discharge-to-zero and recharge-to-60% cycle every three months. These instructions are model- and source-specific, so do not combine them into a universal rule.

Across the published guidance, the consistent practice is to keep the station in a cool, dry place away from water, intense heat, direct sun and sharp objects; avoid leaving it fully depleted; check it periodically; and never charge outside the temperature range specified for that model.

Start with the exact model manual

Find the model number on the station, its label or its original documentation, then open the manufacturer’s current manual or support page. Confirm four items before putting the unit away:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The recommended storage percentage or storage cycle.
  • How often the unit must be checked, recharged or cycled.
  • The permitted storage and charging temperatures.
  • Any warranty condition tied to leaving the unit unused.

Instructions can differ even within one manufacturer’s product range. Battery chemistry also changes the permitted temperature range. Treat a number as valid only when it is attached to the correct model and source.

Storage charge targets are model-specific

The following examples show why a universal “leave it at X percent” answer would be misleading.

Device or guidance Charge instruction Check or cycle interval Temperature or other condition
Jackery long-term storage FAQ, July 2, 2026 Keep remaining capacity above 80%. Power on and check approximately every three months. That article gives a 10°C to 40°C storage range; verify your model manual.
Jackery Product Maintenance page For storage longer than three months, periodically check and maintain 50% of rated capacity. The page recommends periodic attention to the charge level. Storage temperature 0°C to 40°C; relative humidity 0% to 60%.
EcoFlow E980 Portable Power Station Discharge to 0%, then recharge to 60% for long-term storage. Repeat every three months. The E980 manual says warranty coverage does not apply if the product is not charged or discharged for more than six months; check current terms.

Read the first two rows as separate Jackery instructions, not as a combined 80%-then-50% procedure. The pages may apply to different products or guidance contexts. Use the instruction published for your station’s exact model.

Do not deliberately run an unfamiliar station to zero just because another model’s manual says to do so. Conversely, do not assume a high charge is correct for every product. If your manual is unavailable, contact the manufacturer with the model and battery chemistry before storing it for months.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare instructions from different models

When two manuals appear to disagree, compare the same four fields rather than averaging their numbers: battery chemistry and model, storage charge target, check or cycling interval, and storage and charging temperature ranges. A percentage is meaningful only in that context. The E980’s quarterly discharge-and-recharge process, for example, is not interchangeable with either Jackery recommendation.

Also distinguish a storage target from a maintenance action. “Keep above 80%” describes a level to maintain, while “discharge to 0% and recharge to 60% every three months” describes a repeated procedure. Copy the wording from your manual into your maintenance record so that another household member does not mistake one type of instruction for the other.

Keep the station in a suitable place

Choose a cool, dry indoor location

Place the unit somewhere dry, clean and protected from temperature extremes. The EcoFlow E980 manual says the ideal use and storage environment is 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). It also says to keep the product away from water, intense heat and sharp objects. Those figures and cautions are E980-specific, but they illustrate the type of environment to seek.

Do not store a station in a vehicle, attic, shed or other location that can become intensely hot or cold unless the manual explicitly permits it. Direct sunlight can heat the enclosure beyond the surrounding air temperature. Keep the station off floors or surfaces where leaks, condensation or standing water could reach it.

Respect the stated temperature limits

Storage, use and charging may have different limits. Jackery’s temperature FAQ gives these chemistry-specific ranges:

Jackery battery chemistry Discharge range Charging range Storage range
NCM −10°C to 40°C 0°C to 40°C −10°C to 40°C
LiFePO₄ −10°C to 45°C 0°C to 45°C −10°C to 45°C

These are the ranges in Jackery’s July 2, 2026 FAQ, not a universal specification for all portable power stations. In particular, a unit may tolerate storage at a temperature at which charging is not permitted. Never plug in a cold or overheated station until it is within the charging range in its own manual.

Account for humidity as well as temperature

Some manuals specify humidity separately. The Jackery Product Maintenance page gives a relative-humidity range of 0% to 60% for the storage guidance it describes. That does not turn 60% into a category-wide limit, but it does show why a damp basement, bathroom or location exposed to condensation may be unsuitable even when its thermometer reading looks acceptable. If your manual lists a humidity range, record it alongside the temperature limit and choose a location that can stay within both.

Prepare the station before storage

  1. Identify the model. Record the model number and locate the current manual. Note the specified charge target, interval and temperature limits.
  2. Turn off connected equipment. Unplug appliances, USB devices, solar inputs and other accessories. Check that output ports and input cables are not carrying a load.
  3. Set the charge level as directed. Follow the exact percentage or cycle in the manual. Do not substitute the Jackery or E980 examples unless your unit is that model.
  4. Let the enclosure reach room temperature. If the station has been in a hot car, cold garage or direct sun, move it to an appropriate location and wait until it is within the permitted charging range before connecting power.
  5. Inspect and clean it. EcoFlow’s E980 manual recommends wiping the product with a soft, dry cloth. Remove dust from accessible surfaces without introducing water into ports or openings.
  6. Protect the storage area. Keep the station away from water, intense heat, direct sunlight and sharp objects. Do not place heavy items on it or block ventilation openings described in the manual.
  7. Record the date and target. Write down when you stored it, its charge percentage and the next check date. This prevents an indefinite period of neglect.

Schedule periodic checks

A stored station still needs the interval specified by its manufacturer. Jackery’s long-term storage FAQ says to power on and check the device approximately once every three months. The EcoFlow E980 manual gives a more specific quarterly cycle: discharge to 0% and recharge to 60% every three months.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At each check, use this sequence:

  1. Confirm the storage area is still dry and within the allowed temperature range.
  2. Inspect the case, display, ports and cables for visible damage or contamination.
  3. Power on the station if the manual calls for a check. Read the displayed percentage and any warning.
  4. Apply the model’s recharge or discharge procedure. Use only the supplied or manufacturer-approved charging method described in the manual.
  5. Disconnect charging when the specified target is reached, then turn the unit off if the manual directs you to do so.
  6. Record the date, displayed percentage and any warning message.

If the station will remain unused for another quarter, set a new reminder. A calendar event labelled with the model and target percentage is more reliable than relying on memory.

Keep a simple maintenance record

A useful record has five entries: model number, battery chemistry if the manufacturer identifies it, date checked, displayed percentage, and action taken. Add the room temperature or any warning shown by the station when those details matter to the manual. This makes it easier to tell whether a low reading is a one-time observation or a repeated pattern and gives support staff the facts they need if you have to contact them.

Do not store it fully depleted

Leaving a station at 0% for an extended period is specifically discouraged in Jackery’s guidance. Its maintenance page says a completely drained unit should be recharged within 30 days, and another Jackery FAQ warns against storing at 0%. Attribute that 30-day interval to Jackery; it is not a universal deadline for every brand or model.

If your station has shut down because its battery is empty, move it to the correct temperature range and follow the recovery and charging procedure in the manual. Do not repeatedly press the power button, connect random adapters or attempt a procedure intended for a different model. If it will not accept a charge, stop and contact the manufacturer with the model number and the observed indicators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging during storage: temperature and procedure matter

Charging limits are often narrower than storage limits. Jackery’s published ranges, for example, list charging from 0°C to 40°C for NCM models and 0°C to 45°C for LiFePO₄ models, while their storage ranges extend down to −10°C. A station stored in a cold room may therefore need to warm up before charging.

Check the manual for:

  • The minimum and maximum charging temperature.
  • Whether the station should be switched on or off while charging.
  • Whether a complete cycle, partial recharge or fixed target percentage is required.
  • Which AC adapter, solar input or other charging source is approved.
  • What to do when a temperature, battery or input warning appears.

Place the charger where it can remain dry and ventilated, and avoid charging in direct sunlight or inside a closed vehicle. Disconnect it after the prescribed target or cycle rather than leaving an unapproved setup connected indefinitely.

Maintenance that is actually supported by the manuals

Cleaning

EcoFlow’s E980 manual recommends wiping the product with a soft, dry cloth. Keep liquids away from the enclosure, sockets, screens and charging ports. Do not use a wet cloth, solvents or improvised tools unless the manual specifically approves them.

Inspection

During each scheduled check, look for cracked housing, swelling, leaking, burned connectors, loose parts or damaged cables. The reviewed manufacturer material does not establish a user-replaceable part, special storage accessory or repair tool. If you see physical damage or an unusual smell, stop using and charging the station and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firmware and settings

Only update firmware or change battery settings when the current model documentation provides that procedure. The storage guidance cited here does not establish a universal firmware-maintenance step, so do not infer one from another product’s app or menu.

What to do for different storage periods

A few days or weeks

Use the model’s normal shutdown procedure, unplug all loads and place the station in a cool, dry location. Confirm that it is not fully depleted. A short absence does not remove the need to respect temperature limits, but it may not trigger a long-term cycling instruction.

More than three months

Use the long-term procedure in the exact manual and schedule a recurring check. For the Jackery guidance cited above, one page says to keep capacity above 80% and check about every three months, while another says to maintain 50% for storage beyond three months. For the EcoFlow E980, the procedure is discharge to 0% and recharge to 60% every three months. Select one procedure only after confirming the model.

Six months or longer

Look for a warranty or service condition in the current manual. The EcoFlow E980 manual states that the product will not be covered by warranty if it has not been charged or discharged for more than six months. That is an E980 statement; it must not be applied to another station without checking its current terms. Plan checks before the six-month mark if your model has a similar requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes when the station has a different battery chemistry?

Do not identify chemistry by appearance or by the product’s capacity alone. Use the model documentation. Jackery’s July 2, 2026 temperature FAQ separates NCM and LiFePO₄ limits: NCM charging is listed at 0°C to 40°C, while LiFePO₄ charging is listed at 0°C to 45°C; their discharge and storage ranges also differ. Those distinctions are practical reasons to record the exact model and chemistry instead of copying a temperature from a similar-looking station.

Troubleshoot common storage mistakes

The percentage is lower than expected

Verify that the displayed value is the battery percentage and not an input or output reading. Check the date of the previous inspection and apply the model’s prescribed recharge procedure. If the station repeatedly loses charge or displays a warning, document the model, dates and messages and ask the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.

The station is too cold or hot to charge

Do not force charging outside the permitted range. Move it to a dry environment within the model’s charging limits, allow the enclosure to reach that temperature naturally, then retry using the approved charger. The storage range does not automatically equal the charging range.

It was left empty for longer than recommended

Follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions and recharge within the interval it specifies. Jackery’s maintenance page says a completely drained unit should be recharged within 30 days. If it does not respond normally, stop experimenting with alternate chargers and contact support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unit was stored in a hot vehicle

Remove it from the vehicle and keep it away from direct sun while it returns to an approved temperature. Inspect the housing and cables before charging. Use the manual’s temperature limits to decide when charging may resume; do not rely on the vehicle’s cabin thermometer alone.

The manual and a support page show different numbers

Check the publication date, model name and battery chemistry identified on each page. The July 2, 2026 Jackery long-term FAQ and the Jackery Product Maintenance page present different storage targets, so they should not be merged. Use the current document that explicitly covers your model, and ask the manufacturer to resolve any remaining conflict before a long storage period.

Is a garage or vehicle acceptable? Only if the location stays within the manual’s storage limits and remains dry. The E980 ideal is 20°C to 30°C, and Jackery publishes model- and chemistry-specific limits. A hot vehicle or direct sun can exceed those limits.

Can I charge it when it is cold? Not automatically. Jackery’s examples allow storage down to −10°C but list charging from 0°C, showing that charging limits can be narrower. Let the station reach its permitted charging temperature first.

Do I need a special storage accessory? The cited manufacturer pages do not establish a required accessory, replacement part or repair tool. Use the location and cleaning instructions in the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I will not use it for six months? Check the warranty terms and schedule the required cycles. The EcoFlow E980 manual says warranty coverage does not apply if the unit has not been charged or discharged for more than six months; that condition is specific to the E980 unless another model says otherwise.

Source-backed guidance to keep with your records

For Jackery’s long-term storage instructions, see the July 2, 2026 support FAQ. Its maintenance guidance is on the Jackery Product Maintenance page. The chemistry-specific temperature ranges are in Jackery’s temperature FAQ. For the E980 procedure and its 20°C–30°C ideal environment, consult the EcoFlow E980 Portable Power Station User Manual. Check those pages and the manual supplied with your station for revisions before relying on a number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What charge level is best for long-term storage?

There is no universal level. Follow the exact model manual: cited Jackery guidance uses above 80% or 50%, while EcoFlow’s E980 uses a quarterly discharge-to-0% and recharge-to-60% cycle.

How often should I inspect a stored power station?

Jackery’s long-term FAQ says approximately every three months. The EcoFlow E980 manual also specifies a three-month cycle, but with a particular discharge and recharge procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a portable power station stay in a garage or car?

Only when the location remains within the model’s temperature and humidity limits and stays dry. Avoid hot vehicles, direct sunlight and places exposed to water or condensation.

What should I do if the battery reaches 0%?

Move it into the permitted charging temperature range and follow the manufacturer’s recovery procedure. Jackery says a completely drained unit should be recharged within 30 days; that timing is brand-specific.

Are storage and charging temperatures the same?

Not necessarily. Jackery’s examples permit storage down to −10°C but begin charging at 0°C, so let a cold unit warm into its charging range before plugging it in.

The Bottom Line

Store the station exactly as its current model manual directs: use the specified charge target or cycle, keep it cool, dry and shaded, avoid full depletion, and check it on the required schedule. Record each inspection and never charge outside the model’s permitted temperature range.
