Store a home backup battery according to its exact model manual—not a universal percentage or schedule. Portable power stations, installed batteries, and even products in the same category can require different charge levels, check intervals, temperatures, and shutdown methods. Identify the model, follow its long-storage procedure, keep the environment within the stated limits, and treat heat, damage, alerts, smoke, or a recall as a service issue rather than a do-it-yourself repair.

Start with the exact battery and system type

Before changing a charge setting or unplugging anything, record the manufacturer, model name, serial number, installation type, and the manual or support page that applies to that model. A portable power station is designed for an owner to move, charge, and store. A permanently installed residential battery is part of a high-voltage energy system with an inverter, gateway, wiring, and protective equipment. Their storage routines are not interchangeable.

  • Portable power station: You normally control charging, loads, shutdown, and storage location. Use the maker’s stated long-storage state of charge and recharge interval.
  • Permanently installed battery: Owner care may be limited to visual checks, keeping ventilation clear, and reporting alerts. Do not open the enclosure, remove covers, change internal settings, or work on electrical connections unless the manufacturer explicitly identifies that task as an owner procedure.

Do not assume that a lithium battery’s chemistry, capacity, or brand makes another model’s instructions safe to copy. The examples below demonstrate the differences; they are not a universal routine.

  2. Place it in a dry, climate-controlled area with the ventilation openings unobstructed.
  3. For the ready-at-full-charge method, leave it connected to its approved charger and switch the power button off.
  4. If it will be unplugged, put a recurring reminder on the calendar to recharge it every 3–6 months.
  5. After charging, check the display, charger, cable, and enclosure for abnormal heat, damage, swelling, or an error before returning it to storage.

The 3–6-month interval applies to the named Yeti models and to the unplugged-storage situation described by Goal Zero. It is not a rule for every portable station.

EcoFlow GLACIER plug-in battery

The GLACIER plug-in battery manual specifies a dry, cool, well-ventilated storage environment at 15°C–35°C. For long-term storage, it instructs owners to charge and discharge the battery once every three months and then leave it at 60% charge. If use has taken the battery below 1%, the manual says to charge it to 60% for storage. It warns against leaving the battery uncharged or unused for more than six months.

  1. Move the battery to a dry, cool, well-ventilated location that stays within 15°C–35°C.
  2. Every three months, perform the manual’s charge-and-discharge cycle.
  3. Finish the cycle with the battery at 60% charge.
  4. If the battery fell below 1% during use, charge it to 60% before putting it away.
  5. Do not let it remain uncharged or unused for longer than six months; set a reminder for the three-month cycle instead.

These instructions are specific to the GLACIER plug-in battery. They differ materially from the Yeti routine: one calls for a 60% storage level and a three-month cycle, while the other describes staying plugged in at full charge or recharging every 3–6 months when unplugged.

Victron Lithium SuperPack NG

Victron’s extended-storage guidance for the Lithium SuperPack NG family says to disconnect loads and switch the battery off with its physical push button. Turning it off in the app leaves Bluetooth active, so app shutdown is not the same as a complete physical power-off. The guidance also recommends avoiding discharge below 10% state of charge when possible.

  4. During use before storage, avoid allowing the state of charge to fall below 10% when practical.
  5. Use the model’s own manual for any recharge or restart steps when returning it to service.

The 10% figure is an avoidance threshold in this Victron guidance, not a recommended storage percentage for unrelated batteries.

Permanently installed batteries: owner maintenance is usually limited

Tesla Powerwall 2 and Gateway

The Powerwall 2 Owner Manual lists an operating range of −20°C to 50°C (−4°F to 122°F) and an optimum ambient range of 0°C to 30°C (32°F to 86°F). Tesla states: “Powerwall and the Gateway do not require pre-scheduled preventative maintenance.” The owner’s practical task is to keep the equipment clear of debris, especially around air intakes and exhausts, and to report alerts or abnormal behavior through the manufacturer’s support process.

An operating range is not automatically a storage limit. Do not use the figures above to decide where another manufacturer’s battery may be stored, and do not infer that a battery can safely sit at either temperature extreme indefinitely.

Tesla Powerwall 3

The Powerwall 3 Owner Manual also lists an operating range of −20°C to 50°C. It warns that performance may be de-rated above 40°C. Tesla states: “Powerwall 3 does not require pre-scheduled preventative maintenance.” Keep the areas around the unit clear so airflow is not blocked, and use the manufacturer’s service path for faults.

Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 have similar headline operating limits but are different products. Use the manual for the installed model shown on the equipment or in the monitoring application; do not transfer a Powerwall 3 temperature qualification to Powerwall 2 or to another battery.

How to prepare any battery between outages

The following workflow keeps the decision model-specific while covering the checks that apply broadly. Replace each charging percentage, interval, and temperature value with the one stated for your exact product.

  1. Identify the equipment. Photograph the model and serial labels, note whether it is portable or permanently installed, and locate the current owner manual.
  2. Read the storage section, not only the operating section. Look specifically for long-term storage state of charge, recharge or exercise interval, allowed environment, shutdown method, and restart instructions.
  3. Remove unnecessary loads. For a portable station, unplug appliances and accessories. For an installed system, do not disconnect wiring or protective equipment yourself; follow the system’s stated owner controls.
  4. Inspect without opening the enclosure. Look for swelling, cracks, corrosion, liquid, loose external cables, unusual odor, scorch marks, or a display warning. Stop if anything is abnormal.
  5. Set the prescribed charge level. A product may require full charge while connected, 60% after a three-month cycle, or another model-specific level. Do not substitute a generic 50%, 80%, or 100% target.
  6. Control the environment. Use a dry location, preserve the required ventilation, and keep the battery away from heat sources, direct water, combustible clutter, and blocked air paths. Apply only the temperature limits identified for that model and purpose.
  7. Record the next check. Put the recharge, exercise, or visual-inspection date on a calendar. The interval may be three months, 3–6 months, or a different period.
  8. Recheck before an expected outage. Confirm the battery reports normal status, inspect cables and vents, and perform only the test or restart procedure the manual permits.

Environment, airflow, and temperature: what the numbers do—and do not—mean

Keep every battery in a dry area with adequate ventilation unless the manufacturer specifies a more restrictive environment. Do not cover air intakes or exhausts with fabric, boxes, or stored equipment. Dust and debris can reduce airflow around installed equipment, so clear the surrounding area without disassembling the unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temperature figures require careful wording:

  • Operating versus storage: A published operating range describes conditions while the product is running. It may not be a permitted long-term storage range.
  • Ambient versus internal temperature: An ambient specification concerns the surrounding air, not a battery cell’s internal temperature.
  • Performance derating: Powerwall 3 may reduce performance above 40°C even though its stated operating range extends to 50°C.
  • Model boundaries: The Powerwall 2 figures of −20°C to 50°C operating and 0°C to 30°C optimum ambient belong to that model’s manual. They are not a generic lithium-battery recommendation.
  • Portable-product limits: The GLACIER long-storage environment is 15°C–35°C, which is narrower than the Tesla operating figures and applies to a different product.

What to do when the battery is abnormal

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that battery incidents can occur during use, storage, and charging, with hazards that include overheating and fire. Its safety information emphasizes that high-energy-density batteries need additional care and that the battery, charger, and intended product must be evaluated as a system. Use the charger and accessories approved for the product; do not improvise a replacement charger because a connector appears to fit.

  • Water exposure or impact: Do not return the unit to charging merely because it appears dry or still powers on. Obtain model-specific guidance.
  • Charger or cable damage: Replace it only with the manufacturer’s specified part or an explicitly approved equivalent.

On November 13, 2025, the CPSC announced a recall involving about 10,500 certain Tesla Powerwall 2 systems. The agency said affected cells could cause a unit to stop functioning during normal use and potentially lead to overheating, smoke, or flame; replacement was listed as the remedy. Check the exact model and serial range and the current remedy information rather than assuming every Powerwall 2 is included.

Compare storage requirements with a model-first checklist

If you are choosing or auditing a backup system, compare the following evidence instead of ranking products by a supposed universal storage percentage.

Decision point Goal Zero Yeti 1000/1500 EcoFlow GLACIER plug-in battery Victron Lithium SuperPack NG Tesla Powerwall 2/3
System type Portable power station Portable plug-in battery Battery product family; model-specific installation Permanently installed residential system
Long-storage charge or threshold Full charge when left plugged in; unplugged routine says recharge every 3–6 months End the three-month cycle at 60%; charge to 60% if it fell below 1% Avoid discharge below 10% when possible; extended-storage shutdown uses the physical button Not stated as a user-set storage percentage in the cited manuals
Check or exercise interval Every 3–6 months if unplugged Charge and discharge once every three months Extended-storage power-off procedure; interval not stated in the cited guidance No scheduled preventive maintenance stated
Environment or temperature information Dry, climate-controlled location Dry, cool, well-ventilated, 15°C–35°C Use the exact model’s storage guidance Powerwall 2: −20°C to 50°C operating, 0°C to 30°C optimum ambient. Powerwall 3: −20°C to 50°C operating; performance may be de-rated above 40°C
Owner maintenance emphasis Charging, shutdown, inspection, and storage location Three-month cycle and 60% storage level Disconnect loads and use the physical power button Keep airflow areas and air intakes/exhausts clear; no scheduled preventive maintenance stated

The table shows why a generic “best” storage level would be misleading: the manufacturers specify different actions, and the installed systems are maintained differently from portable products.

Common storage mistakes and their fixes

Applying one percentage to every battery

Problem: Leaving every product at 50%, 80%, or 100% because that number is common online. Fix: Use the exact model’s storage target, such as the GLACIER’s 60% endpoint or the Yeti’s plugged-in full-charge procedure.

Confusing operating limits with storage limits

Problem: Treating a −20°C to 50°C operating range as permission to store a battery anywhere in that range. Fix: Find a separate storage specification; if none is stated, ask the manufacturer rather than extrapolating.

Leaving a portable station forgotten

Problem: Unplugging a station after an outage and never checking it. Fix: Follow the stated interval—3–6 months for an unplugged Yeti 1000/1500, or every three months for the GLACIER cycle—and record the date.

Using app shutdown when physical shutdown is required

Problem: Assuming an app’s off command completely powers down a Victron Lithium SuperPack NG. Fix: Disconnect loads and use the physical push button for extended storage, because app shutdown leaves Bluetooth active.

Opening an installed enclosure

Problem: Removing covers or attempting a repair after an alert. Fix: Keep owner maintenance to the manual’s stated tasks and use qualified service for electrical work.

Ignoring a recall because the system still works

Problem: Assuming normal operation proves a battery is safe. Fix: Check current regulator and manufacturer notices using the exact model and serial number, including the 2025 notice for certain Powerwall 2 systems.

Before the next outage

  • Confirm the model-specific charge or exercise date is current.
  • Verify that a portable station’s display and outputs behave normally under the manual’s permitted test.
  • Make sure installed-battery air paths are clear and that no warning is present in the monitoring interface.
  • Inspect chargers, plugs, and external cables for damage.
  • Keep the owner’s manual, serial number, support contact, and emergency instructions accessible.
  • Review recall status after moving, replacing, or adding battery equipment.

A between-outage routine is successful when the battery is stored in its specified environment, checked at its specified interval, and left in the specified state without owner access to hazardous electrical parts. When instructions conflict, the exact model manual and current manufacturer safety notice control.
