Short answer: Keep the Xbox Series X or Series S retail box indoors in a cool, dry, shaded place, then protect it inside a sturdy corrugated carton with clean cushioning on every side. Keep the carton above any leak-prone floor, away from heaters and direct sun, and never stack heavy items on it. Refit the original inserts, do not tape the printed box, and inspect it periodically for moisture, pests and crushed corners.
The original packaging is made mainly from corrugated board, paper and foam, so water, heat, abrasion and compression are the main risks. Microsoft’s 2022 ecoprofiles list the Series X package at 38 × 29 × 22 cm and 1,237 g, and the Series S package at 36 × 29 × 13 cm and 831 g. Those figures are useful for selecting an outer carton, but package dimensions can differ by edition and region.
Why the retail box needs its own protection
An Xbox retail carton is not just disposable wrapping. Its printed panels, seals, labels, molded inserts and accessory compartments help keep the console complete and identifiable if you move, sell, warranty or store it for a long period. A box can remain structurally usable while its corners, graphics or labels are permanently damaged, which is why preventing small dents and scuffs is easier than repairing them.

Corrugated board loses stiffness when it absorbs water, paper surfaces can stain or delaminate, and foam inserts can deform under long-term compression. Direct contact with rough shelves, dusty floors or adhesive tape also leaves marks that are difficult to remove from printed surfaces.

The safest approach is a removable protective layer: keep the original box intact inside a stronger, slightly larger carton. The outer carton absorbs shelf abrasion and minor impacts and can be replaced without touching the retail graphics.
Xbox Series X and Series S package dimensions
Use the retail-package dimensions rather than the console dimensions when choosing storage space. The package includes the box structure and its contents, so it is substantially larger than the console itself.

These are Microsoft 2022 ecoprofile figures. The listed weights are for the packaged products, not a recommendation for how much weight an outer carton or shelf should carry. Check your own carton with a ruler because a different bundle, market or revision may have extra inserts or a different lid.
Choosing an outer-carton size
The outer box must have clearance on all six sides for cushioning. As a practical starting point, allow about 5 cm of internal space on each side of the retail box. That produces minimum internal dimensions of approximately:
- Series X: 48 × 39 × 32 cm (38 + 10, 29 + 10, 22 + 10).
- Series S: 46 × 39 × 23 cm (36 + 10, 29 + 10, 13 + 10).
These are packing recommendations, not Microsoft specifications. If your cushioning is thin, 2 to 3 cm per side may be enough; if you use thicker paper pads or expect the carton to be moved frequently, choose more room. Measure the packed retail box, including any protruding handle or flap, and make sure the outer carton closes without bowing.

Prepare the original box before putting it away
- Photograph every side. Take clear photos of the seals, printed panels, serial-number labels, inserts and accessory compartments. Record any existing dent or tear so a later change is easy to identify.
- Remove loose dirt. Use a dry, soft cloth or a clean soft brush. Do not wet the board, spray cleaner on it or scrub printed ink.
- Refit the molded inserts. Return the foam or pulp pieces to their original positions. They prevent the console and accessories from shifting and support the box panels.
- Group the contents. Keep the controller, power cable, HDMI cable, manuals and small parts in their intended compartments or in clean, labeled bags. Do not leave metal objects loose against printed cardboard.
- Check for moisture. If the box feels cool, soft, wavy or smells musty, let it dry naturally in a ventilated indoor room before closing it. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator or other concentrated heat.
- Close without force. Align the flaps and tabs as designed. If a flap resists, find the misaligned insert or cable rather than pressing down on the lid.
Never apply packing tape directly to the retail box. Tape adhesive can lift ink, tear the paper face or leave residue when removed. If a closure is needed, tape only the outer carton.
Pack the retail box inside a protective carton
- Choose a sound carton. Select a clean, dry, double-wall or otherwise sturdy corrugated carton with enough internal clearance. Reject cartons with soft corners, water stains, crushed edges, oil or pest damage.
- Build a bottom cushion. Place a flat layer of clean, non-abrasive paper or cushioning material on the bottom. It should cover the whole base rather than form a hard point under one corner.
- Center the retail box. Lower it into the carton without dragging it across the cardboard. Keep equal clearance around the sides where possible.
- Fill side gaps. Add crumpled clean paper or another non-abrasive void fill around the retail box. Fill enough to stop lateral movement, but do not wedge material so tightly that it bows the retail panels.
- Protect the top. Add a loose, even cushion above the retail box before closing the flaps. The lid should meet normally; if it presses on the retail box, use a larger carton.
- Test movement. With the carton closed but not yet taped, gently tilt it a few degrees. If you hear or feel the retail box sliding, reopen it and add or reposition void fill.
- Seal the outer carton. Tape the outer carton’s seams and never the printed retail surface. Use enough tape to keep dust out, but leave the inner box untouched.
- Label it clearly. Mark the contents, the preferred upright orientation and a simple “do not stack heavy items” warning. Labels help other people handle the carton correctly.
Use clean materials only. Newspaper ink, dirty textiles, abrasive plastic and loose foam crumbs can transfer onto the retail box. Avoid packing peanuts that can migrate into openings or cling electrostatically to surfaces.

Pick a safe storage location
Keep it indoors and dry
Store the carton in a normal indoor room rather than a garage, shed, attic, basement or vehicle that experiences large temperature swings. Microsoft does not publish a numeric humidity or temperature limit for storing the retail carton. “Cool and dry” is therefore a general preservation practice for paper and corrugated board, not a Microsoft storage specification.
Choose a location with steady conditions and ventilation. Avoid rooms where condensation forms on pipes, exterior walls or windows. A damp smell, softened corners, wavy panels or stains are early warnings that the location is unsuitable.
Keep water and heat away
- Keep the carton away from sinks, washing machines, water heaters, radiators, fireplaces and HVAC discharge.
- Do not place it directly against a cold exterior wall where condensation could form.
- Block direct sunlight. Ultraviolet exposure can fade printed colors and heat the carton unevenly.
- Never store it in a car, where heat and condensation can build rapidly even when the weather outside feels mild.
Raise it above the floor
Put the outer carton on a shelf, pallet or platform whenever a leak, mop water or minor flooding is possible. Elevation also reduces dust and makes inspection easier. Leave enough room to remove the carton without scraping it against a wall or ceiling.

A sturdy corrugated outer carton is the primary choice because it adds a replaceable protective layer, keeps the retail carton centered and follows Microsoft’s general packing advice to use a sturdy box for accessories and components. It does not make the contents waterproof, so location still matters.
Stacking rules that prevent crushed corners
- Keep the Xbox carton on top of a shelf or stack, not underneath books, tools, appliances or other consoles.
- Do not assume the flat lid can support weight. Long-term compression can bow the lid and transfer force to the retail box corners.
- Store the outer carton upright in the orientation marked on the label, unless its construction clearly supports another orientation.
- Leave a small handling gap between cartons so one box is not dragged across another when removed.
- Keep shelves level and strong enough for the carton and any neighboring items. A sagging shelf can twist the box even without a heavy load.
If you must place items nearby, keep them beside the carton rather than on it and make sure their edges cannot puncture the corrugated board.
Inspect the box during long-term storage
Check the carton after the first few weeks, then periodically—every three to six months is a practical interval for a box kept for years. Open it in a clean, dry room and look at both the outer carton and the retail packaging.
- Moisture: stains, softened board, ripples, mildew odor or condensation.
- Pests: droppings, holes, shredded paper or insects inside the carton.
- Compression: bowed lids, crushed corners, collapsed sidewalls or shifted inserts.
- Abrasion: scuffed printing, rubbed edges or grit trapped between the two boxes.
- Contents: missing manuals, cables, controller parts or labels.
Replace a damp or crushed outer carton immediately. If the retail box is dry but has begun to deform, move it to a larger carton with more even support. Never clamp or strap the retail box tightly to force it back into shape; that can permanently crease the board.

What to do when something goes wrong

Preparing the box for a move or shipment
For a local move, keep the retail box inside its protective carton and carry the carton by its base, not by a thin flap or an attached handle. Place it where furniture and tools cannot fall onto it. In a vehicle, secure it so braking cannot make it slide; avoid the trunk or cargo area if temperatures are extreme.
For parcel shipment, use a new, strong outer carton with more clearance than you would need for shelf storage. Add cushioning that surrounds the retail box on every side and test for movement before sealing. Marking an orientation can help, but it is not a substitute for cushioning because carriers may handle packages in different positions. Keep photographs of the packed condition and labels before handing it over.
Do not ship the console enclosed in its retail packaging if the console is still warm or damp. Let the device and all components reach room temperature and dry completely first.
Do not operate the console while it is enclosed
The packaging is for transport and storage, not ventilation. Never power on an Xbox Series X or Series S while it is inside the retail box, outer carton, plastic tote or any other enclosure. Remove the console and allow open airflow before use.
Xbox guidance says to measure the available space and leave extra room for airflow. That instruction applies to the operating console, not to the dimensions of a storage carton. When the console is returned to service, follow the ventilation guidance for its normal upright or horizontal position and keep vents unobstructed.

When the original box is already damaged
Minor scuffs or a small crease
Photograph the condition, remove grit, refit the inserts and place the box in a protective outer carton. A clean separator sheet can prevent further rubbing, but do not tape or glue the crease.
Wet, moldy or structurally weak board
Do not put a damp box directly beside dry electronics or paperwork. Isolate it, allow gentle indoor drying and assess whether the board has regained stiffness. If it remains soft, stained or moldy, preserve the labels and inserts separately in clean, dry packaging. Replacement packaging may be safer than trying to restore weakened board.
Missing inserts or accessories
Record what is absent and store the remaining parts together. Do not substitute dense objects that press against the retail panels. If you later obtain replacement inserts, check that they fit without forcing the flaps.
A simple long-term storage checklist
- Photographs of all panels, seals, labels and contents are saved.
- Original foam or molded inserts are refitted.
- Controller, cables, manuals and small parts are grouped and labeled.
- Retail flaps close naturally with no panel compression.
- Outer carton is clean, dry, sturdy and large enough for cushioning.
- Void fill prevents sliding without abrading or crushing the retail box.
- No tape touches printed retail surfaces.
- Carton is above the floor, shaded and away from leaks, condensation and heaters.
- No heavy item rests on the carton or its corners.
- Inspection dates are noted so moisture, pests and deformation are found early.
Following those checks gives the box a replaceable outer shield while preserving the original packaging, inserts and labels for the next time the console needs to be moved or stored.
