Store a down jacket completely dry and uncompressed. Hang it in a closet with room around it, or put it loosely in a breathable cotton garment bag when hanging is impractical. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and radiators. A stuff sack or vacuum bag is for temporary transport, not off-season storage.
No care guide establishes a universal number of hours or days after which compression damages every jacket. The reliable rule is qualitative: avoid prolonged compression, allow the jacket to regain its space after travel, and follow the garment’s own care label for cleaning and drying.
Why storage affects down insulation
Down works by holding still air inside a network of fine clusters. That trapped air provides much of the jacket’s warmth, and the visible puffiness of the garment is a practical sign that the insulation has room to expand.
Recommended Free Tools
Stuffing the jacket into a small sack presses those clusters together. Short-term compression is normal while hiking, flying, or packing a car, but leaving the jacket compressed for long periods prevents it from remaining in its lofted shape. The care guidance from Odlo, ARKET, Haglöfs, Jöttnar, and Craft Sportswear therefore uses the same basic instruction: store down garments loose, not tightly packed.

That advice does not support a precise “safe” compression limit or a guaranteed percentage of loft loss. Storage conditions, jacket construction, moisture, fabric, and the type of down all vary. The useful decision is whether the jacket will stay compressed or be allowed to hang or lie loosely between trips.
Choose a storage method
| Method | Compression | Breathability | Space requirement | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wide hanger in a closet | Uncompressed | Open air | Needs spare hanging room | Everyday and long-term storage when closet space is available |
| Loose cotton garment bag or cover | Uncompressed if not overfilled | Breathable | Can protect against dust while using a shelf or rail | Long-term storage when hanging openly is inconvenient |
| Stuff sack | Compressed | Limited by the packed fabric and closure | Minimal | Transport and brief field use only |
| Vacuum-storage bag | Highly compressed | Very limited | Minimal | Not appropriate for long-term down-jacket storage |
Hanging is the simplest option. If you need dust protection or do not have a suitable closet, use a loose, breathable cotton bag or cover. ARKET’s August 2025 down-care guide and Haglöfs’ insulation-care guidance both describe breathable cotton storage as an alternative to hanging. Do not fill the bag so tightly that the jacket is pressed against itself.
When laying flat makes sense
Some care instructions, including Odlo’s, allow a jacket to hang or lie flat. Laying it flat can work when a closet is full, provided the surface is clean and dry and nothing is placed on top. Spread the jacket in its normal shape, close the front, and keep sleeves and hood from being folded into hard creases. A shelf with clearance is preferable to the floor, where moisture and dust are more likely. Flat storage is not a reason to put the jacket under boxes, bedding, or another heavy coat.

1. Inspect it
Empty the pockets, close zippers and snaps, and check the shell for dirt, stains, torn seams, or leaking down. Remove anything that could rub against the fabric while the jacket hangs. Inspection also gives you a chance to arrange repairs before the next cold season rather than discovering a problem when you need the jacket.
Look especially at cuffs, pocket openings, the hem, hood adjusters, and baffles. A small tear can allow more down to escape while the garment is handled. Do not pull individual feathers back through the shell; if a seam or fabric is damaged, follow the maker’s repair advice.
2. Clean only when the label calls for it
A jacket does not automatically need washing simply because it is going into storage. Clean it when it is visibly dirty, has absorbed odors, or the care label otherwise calls for cleaning. The garment label is the authority for water temperature, cycle, detergent, and whether professional cleaning is allowed.
If the label permits washing and the jacket needs it, use the stated procedure and a detergent intended for down only when the label or detergent directions support that choice. Avoid treating a generic washing recipe as universal: down garments differ in shell fabric, coatings, construction, and trim.
Spot-cleaning may be enough for a small mark if the label permits it. Do not seal a jacket with body oils, food residue, or road grime still on the shell, because those soils can become harder to remove later. Conversely, unnecessary washing adds handling and drying work, so clean only for a clear reason.
3. Dry it completely
Moisture is the most important pre-storage problem. A jacket that feels dry on the outside can still contain damp down inside its chambers. Putting it away damp raises the risk of mildew and can leave the insulation clumped.

Follow the label’s drying directions. If the jacket has been washed or caught in rain, continue drying or airing it until the interior is fully dry. When you are uncertain, wait rather than storing it. Craft Sportswear, Odlo, Jöttnar, Haglöfs, and ARKET all make complete dryness part of their storage guidance.
Check thick areas such as the collar, hood, cuffs, and lower pockets, where moisture may linger. Do not use a radiator as a shortcut: Jöttnar specifically warns against radiator heat, and concentrated heat can stress shell materials and insulation. Use only the drying method permitted by the label.
Hang or cover the jacket correctly
Using a hanger
- Choose a broad, sturdy hanger that supports the shoulders without creating sharp pressure points.
- Fasten the main zipper or closures so the jacket keeps its normal shape.
- Hang it where air can move around the garment. Do not wedge it tightly between other coats or press it against a packed shelf.
- Leave enough clearance that the hem and sleeves are not crushed by neighboring items.
Odlo’s Care Guide summarizes this approach as “Never store compressed – hang or lay flat.” Hanging is generally easier than laying a jacket flat because it keeps the garment visible and makes periodic inspection simple.
Avoid thin wire hangers or hooks that concentrate force at one point. The goal is support, not stretching: the shoulders should rest naturally on the hanger, with the body and sleeves hanging in their usual shape. If a hood is heavy, let it hang naturally rather than fastening it over the hook in a way that pulls on the collar.
Using a breathable bag or cover
- Use a loose cotton garment bag or another breathable cover rather than an airtight plastic or vacuum bag.
- Place the dry jacket inside without forcing it through a narrow opening or packing it down.
- Store the covered jacket on a hanger or on a shelf where it can remain relaxed.
- Check that the cover is not pulled tight around the jacket and that the shelf does not press on it.
A breathable cover is optional. Its purpose is dust protection or easier use of limited closet space, not additional insulation performance. An existing cotton cover is sufficient; buying a dedicated bag is unnecessary if the jacket can hang freely.
If you do buy one, choose a size that leaves visible slack around the shoulders and baffles. A cover designed for a suit or coat is generally more suitable than a small travel pouch. Do not confuse a breathable garment bag with a sealed plastic storage sack: the latter restricts air exchange and encourages tight packing.

Control moisture
Choose an indoor location that stays dry rather than a damp basement, laundry area, unventilated attic, or shed exposed to condensation. The jacket should be dry before storage, and the surrounding air should not repeatedly add moisture.
Keep it away from wet boots, drying towels, humidifiers, and plumbing leaks. If a closet routinely smells musty or develops condensation, it is not a good long-term location even if the jacket itself starts out dry. Move the jacket to a drier room instead of trying to seal it inside a plastic bag.
Avoid heat and sunlight
Keep the jacket away from direct sunlight and radiators. ARKET and Jöttnar specifically caution against these conditions. A radiator can expose the shell and insulation to concentrated heat, while sunlight can fade or degrade materials over time. A normal, shaded closet is preferable to a hot window ledge.

Allow air around it
Do not place heavy boxes on a jacket stored flat, and do not pack several garments into one small bag. Air space is useful both for preserving loft and for making it easier to notice any dampness or odor before it becomes a larger problem.

Recheck after storage
When you next open the closet, look and smell before wearing the jacket. A musty odor, damp-feeling baffle, or unexplained clumping means it should be removed and dried or cleaned according to the label. There is no need to manipulate the jacket on a fixed schedule; simply inspect it whenever you access the storage area or prepare for a new season.
Travel compression is different from seasonal storage
A stuff sack saves space during transport, so temporary compression is a normal part of using a down jacket. Jöttnar states the distinction plainly: “The stuff sack is for carrying, not storing.”
When you arrive, remove the jacket from the sack and hang it or lay it loosely so it can recover its shape. Do the same after returning home. The cited care guides warn against prolonged compression but do not define an exact safe duration; therefore, do not rely on a claimed universal number of hours or days.
For a trip, pack the jacket only as tightly as necessary, keep it protected from wet gear, and unpack it when you reach camp or your accommodation if you will not need the space-saving compression. Never use a vacuum bag for an entire off-season simply because it reduces closet volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the jacket must remain packed during a flight or a drive, keep the stuff sack accessible and take the jacket out when practical. Let it expand in a dry place before wearing it in cold conditions. Temporary packing is not a substitute for returning it to loose storage between outings.
Common storage mistakes and fixes
The jacket was stored damp
Sign: A musty odor, cool or clammy sections, or clumps that remain after the jacket is removed.
Fix: Take it out of the closet or bag, follow the care label’s drying method, and let it dry completely in a suitable environment before storing it again. If odor or visible mildew remains, use the label’s cleaning route or consult the manufacturer rather than masking the smell with fragrance.
The jacket stayed in its stuff sack for months
Sign: It looks flat immediately after unpacking.
Fix: Remove it from the sack, fasten the closures, and hang it with room around it. Do not respond by repeatedly shaking it harshly or applying concentrated heat. The care guidance supports returning the garment to loose storage; it does not promise a measured recovery time or guarantee a particular loft result.

The bag is airtight or overfilled
Sign: The cover feels tight against the baffles, or the jacket is held in a compressed lump.
Fix: Transfer it to an open hanger or a loose, breathable cotton cover. A breathable garment bag should surround the jacket, not squeeze it.
The closet is hot, sunny, or damp
Sign: The storage area is next to a radiator, receives direct sun, or develops condensation.
Fix: Move the jacket to a cool, dry, shaded location with better air circulation. The exact room temperature is not specified by the cited guides; the practical requirement is avoiding persistent heat, moisture, and direct sun.

Fix: Use the garment’s care label as the controlling instruction. If the label is missing or unreadable, contact the manufacturer before attempting another wash or drying method.
Heavy items were stacked on top
Sign: The jacket has a sharply flattened section where a box or another garment rested.
Fix: Remove the load and move the jacket to a shelf or hanger with clearance. Keep it loose while it returns to its normal shape; do not add heat or forceful handling.
Cost and equipment: what you actually need
Correct storage does not require a special purchase. A suitable broad hanger and a dry closet are enough for most jackets. A breathable cotton garment bag is an optional expense for dust protection or when open hanging is impossible. ARKET and Haglöfs describe that type of cover, but neither guidance makes a dedicated branded bag mandatory.

Do not spend money on vacuum-storage systems for a down jacket. Their space savings come from compression, which is the condition the long-term care advice tells you to avoid. If you already own a cotton cover of adequate size, use it rather than buying another product. The key features are looseness, breathability, and a dry location—not a particular price or brand.
A simple end-of-season routine
- Empty the pockets and inspect the shell, seams, closures, and baffles.
- Clean the jacket only if it is dirty or the care label requires cleaning.
- Dry it according to the label until the inside is completely dry.
- Fasten the closures and place the jacket on a broad hanger, or loosely inside a breathable cotton garment bag.
- Choose a cool, dry, shaded location away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- Keep heavy items from pressing on it and avoid filling the closet or cover so tightly that the jacket is compressed.
- After any trip, remove the jacket from its stuff sack and return it to the same loose-storage arrangement.
What the care guidance establishes—and what it does not
Across the named manufacturer guidance, the consistent recommendations are to store the garment dry, keep it loose, use hanging or a breathable cover, and avoid long-term compression. Odlo, ARKET, Haglöfs, Jöttnar, and Craft Sportswear all support that pattern, with ARKET’s guide dated August 2025.
Those guides do not provide a quantified study showing that a specified number of hours or days causes a particular percentage of insulation loss. They also do not make washing mandatory before every storage period. Treat claims about an exact compression deadline or guaranteed loft recovery as unsupported unless they are specific to your jacket and documented by its manufacturer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave my down jacket in its stuff sack between trips?
Use the stuff sack for transport, then take the jacket out when you arrive and return it to a hanger or loose, breathable cover. The sack is not recommended for prolonged or seasonal storage.
Does a down jacket need to be washed before summer storage?
Not automatically. Clean it if it is dirty, smells, or the care label calls for cleaning. Follow that jacket’s label for washing, detergent, and drying instructions.
Is a plastic garment bag suitable for long-term storage?
A loose, breathable cotton cover is the supported option. Avoid airtight plastic or vacuum bags because they encourage restricted airflow and tight compression.
Can I store the jacket folded on a shelf?
Yes, if the care label permits laying it flat and the shelf is clean, dry, and free of heavy items. Keep the jacket in its normal shape and do not compress it under boxes or other clothing.
How long can a jacket stay compressed safely?
The care guides do not establish one universal number of hours or days. Keep compression temporary, unpack the jacket as soon as practical, and avoid leaving it in a stuff sack for the off-season.
What should I do if the jacket smells musty after storage?
Remove it from storage, follow the label’s drying or cleaning method, and make sure it is completely dry before storing it again. For persistent odor or visible mildew, contact the manufacturer or use the label’s approved cleaning route.
Do I need to buy a special storage bag?
No. A broad hanger and a dry closet are sufficient. A loose breathable cotton bag is an optional dust cover when open hanging is inconvenient.
Is it better to hang or lay a down jacket flat?
Both can work when the jacket remains uncompressed, dry, and supported. Hanging is convenient when there is room; laying flat is useful on a clear shelf where nothing will press on the garment.
