For seasonal storage, put your down jacket away completely dry and loose—not packed into its stuff sack or a compression sack. Hang it in a cool, dry place if you have room; laying it flat or folding it loosely also works. A breathable garment bag or loose cotton bag can keep dust off, but a bag is optional.

The key is not to treat a storage sack as a closet. A stuff sack is useful when you need to carry or pack the jacket, but manufacturer guidance from Montane and Odlo recommends against leaving down compressed for long-term storage. Prepare the jacket according to its own care label, choose a cool, dry place, and leave it enough room to remain uncompressed.

Why down jackets should be stored loose and dry

Down jackets rely on their fill staying lofty rather than being held compressed for long periods. Montane advises storing down garments loose instead of in their stuff sacks, and Odlo cautions against storing down compressed for extended periods. These are recommendations against prolonged compression, not evidence of a precise time limit after which a jacket is damaged. Use the stuff sack for carrying or short-term packing, then take the jacket out when you reach your destination.

The practical distinction is between packing a jacket for a trip and putting it away between uses. A stuff sack helps make a jacket compact to carry; seasonal storage is a different job. Once the jacket is no longer needed in your pack, remove it from the sack and let it rest in a loose position. You do not need a special product or elaborate storage system to do this. A closet hanger, an uncluttered shelf, or a drawer with enough room can all work.

It is also important not to turn this precaution into a claim that every compressed jacket is permanently ruined. The manufacturers cited here advise against long-term compression, but they do not identify a universal safe number of hours or days, a quantified amount of loft loss, or a guaranteed outcome for every jacket. The sensible response is to avoid leaving a down jacket compressed for extended storage, rather than trying to calculate a damage threshold that the guidance does not provide.

Moisture is a separate concern: put the jacket away only when it is thoroughly dry. Marmot, Odlo, Haglöfs, and UNIQLO all emphasize dry storage or fully drying a garment before storage. A jacket that feels dry on the outside may still need more drying after washing or getting wet, so follow the care label and maker’s instructions rather than relying on a quick surface check.

Dryness matters at the moment you store the jacket, whether it became wet outdoors or was just washed. If there is any doubt, allow more time and use only a drying method permitted by the garment label. Do not seal a damp jacket into a cover or leave it folded away simply because the outer fabric feels dry. The guidance is to store it fully dry; it does not supply a universal drying time, so the right amount of time depends on the garment and the permitted care method.

Choose a storage method that leaves the jacket uncompressed

There is no single required position for every down jacket. Manufacturer recommendations support hanging, laying flat, or folding loosely. Choose the option that gives the garment room in the space you have, and avoid making a neat-looking arrangement that holds it tightly compressed under other items.

Method Manufacturer guidance Practical use
Hang it on a hanger Recommended by Mountain Designs and UNIQLO; also accepted by Marmot and Haglöfs. Convenient when closet space allows. Leave enough room that other clothes do not press the jacket tightly against the rail or wall.
Lay it flat or fold it loosely Odlo allows laying a jacket flat; Marmot says folding is also suitable. Useful on a shelf or in a drawer. Avoid tight folds and heavy stacks that keep the jacket compressed.
Use a breathable cover UNIQLO suggests a breathable garment bag; Haglöfs suggests a loose cotton storage bag. Optional dust protection. Choose a loose cover, not a bag that squeezes the jacket down.
Leave it in a stuff sack or compression sack Montane and Odlo advise against long-term compressed storage. Keep the sack for carrying or short-term packing; take the jacket out for seasonal storage.

Hanging: a straightforward choice when closet space is available

Hanging is the easiest option if you have an uncluttered section of closet. Mountain Designs and UNIQLO recommend it, while Marmot and Haglöfs also accept hanging as a storage position. Put the jacket on a hanger and leave some breathing room around it. A closet packed so tightly that neighboring garments press it flat defeats the point of taking it out of a stuff sack.

Think about the position as well as the location. A jacket can hang in a cool, dry closet and still be crowded by other clothes or pressed against a wall. Shift the neighboring items if needed, or choose a shelf instead. Hanging is a common method, not a special requirement, and the sources do not call for a particular hanger type.

Laying flat or folding loosely: useful when hanging is not practical

If closet space is limited, a shelf or drawer can be a suitable alternative. Odlo allows laying a down jacket flat, and Marmot says folding works. The important qualification is to keep the jacket loose. Fold it gently rather than making a tight, compact bundle, and do not put heavy items on top of it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A folded jacket is not automatically being stored incorrectly. The concern is a long-term compressed position, so a loose fold with room around it is different from packing it firmly into a small sack. If a shelf is deep enough to leave the jacket relaxed and clear of heavy objects, it can be a practical solution. If the only available drawer would force it into a tight shape, try hanging it or clearing another space.

A storage bag is optional, not a substitute for space

UNIQLO suggests a breathable garment bag, and Haglöfs suggests a loose cotton storage bag. Either can provide dust protection, but you do not need to buy one if you already have a clean, dry, uncluttered closet or shelf. A cover should be loose enough that the jacket remains uncompressed. A breathable storage cover and a compression sack serve different purposes: the former can cover a garment without squeezing it down; the latter is intended to pack it tightly.

When choosing a cover, focus on whether it keeps the jacket loose and whether it is breathable. Do not confuse any bag described as a garment or storage bag with a compression sack simply because both surround the jacket. The guidance supports the breathable or loose-cover categories, not a particular brand, model, or required purchase. If you use no cover at all, the jacket can still be stored appropriately provided the place is dry, cool, and free of pressure from surrounding items.

You do not need to buy a storage bag. A dry, loose place in a closet or on a shelf works if the jacket is not crowded or weighed down.

Why not leave it in a stuff sack?

A stuff sack is for compact transport or short-term packing. Montane recommends storing down garments loose rather than in their stuff sacks, and Odlo says not to store down compressed for long periods. That makes a packed sack the wrong default for seasonal storage, even if the jacket was packed that way on the way home from a trip.

Take it out when you are done carrying it. Then decide whether hanging, laying flat, or folding loosely fits your available space. Do not assume that because a sack came with the jacket it is also the recommended long-term storage container; the manufacturer advice distinguishes loose storage from keeping the garment compressed.

Pick a suitable place for seasonal storage

Choose a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Haglöfs recommends cool, dry storage and keeping insulation out of direct sunlight; UNIQLO recommends a cool, dry, dark place for long-term storage. A closet or shelf can meet those conditions if it is not damp and the jacket is not squeezed between other items.

For a simple check, consider the whole storage spot, not just the jacket’s position. The garment should be fully dry when put away, the area should be cool and dry, and the jacket should not be exposed to direct sun. UNIQLO’s recommendation adds keeping the long-term storage place dark. A closet often offers those conditions, but the name of the space alone does not guarantee that it is suitable: avoid a damp area, and do not crowd the jacket into a packed shelf.

  • Keep the jacket away from damp areas and do not store it while wet.
  • Avoid direct sun during storage.
  • Leave space around a hanging jacket, or keep a folded one clear of heavy items.
  • If you use a cover, use a breathable garment bag or loose cotton bag rather than a compression sack.
  • Choose a cool place; for long-term storage, UNIQLO also recommends keeping it dark.

There is no need to create a complicated storage setup. If hanging leaves the jacket pressed against clothes, use a shelf. If the shelf is stacked with heavy items, clear space or choose another position. The aim is to combine a suitable place with a loose position rather than favoring a particular piece of furniture.

Prepare the jacket before putting it away

Check the care label first

Cleaning and drying directions differ among jackets. Read the garment’s care label and follow its manufacturer’s guidance before washing, drying, or attempting to restore loft. Do not assume that a method suitable for one down jacket is suitable for another.

This is especially important if the jacket has been washed or has become wet. Manufacturer guidance describes different drying approaches, and the permitted method depends on the garment. Check the label before using a tumble dryer, adding dryer balls or tennis balls, or choosing a heat setting. If the label does not permit a proposed method, do not use it based on instructions for another jacket.

The label also matters when deciding whether the jacket needs cleaning at all. Storage does not create a blanket requirement to wash down. If you are unsure whether washing or drying is suitable, use the instructions supplied for your own garment rather than assuming that all down jackets have the same care directions.

Wash only when needed

Do not make washing a routine requirement before storage. Haglöfs says frequent washing can remove down’s natural oils, recommends airing the garment regularly, and advises washing when needed. For whether and how to wash your particular jacket, defer to its care label and maker.

That means the pre-storage routine need not begin with a wash. If the jacket does not need cleaning, do not wash it solely because the season is ending. Haglöfs’ guidance supports airing the garment regularly and washing when needed, while recognizing that frequent washing can remove natural oils from the down. If cleaning is needed, follow the jacket’s own instructions rather than applying a general recipe.

Similarly, do not assume dry cleaning is appropriate or necessary. The guidance here does not establish a universal cleaning method for all down jackets. The reliable decision point is the care label and the maker’s instructions. Whether you wash it or simply air it, it must be thoroughly dry before going into seasonal storage.

Allow enough time for drying

If the jacket has been washed or become wet, dry it thoroughly before storing it. Some manufacturers describe tumble drying on low heat with dryer balls or tennis balls as a way to restore loft, but these are maker-specific instructions, not universal directions. Use that approach only when the jacket’s label permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Montane describes tumble drying on low heat with two or three dryer balls or tennis balls, checking periodically, and shaking the garment once dry. Mountain Designs also describes low or no heat with tennis balls for restoring loft. Those details are useful only as conditional, manufacturer-specific guidance. They are not instructions to place every down jacket in a dryer, and they do not override the care label.

If the label permits the Montane approach, its guidance is to use low heat with two or three balls, check the garment periodically, and shake it once dry. Mountain Designs describes low or no heat with tennis balls. These are distinct maker instructions, so do not blend them into a universal setting or assume one is suitable for your jacket. Follow the instructions applicable to your garment and continue until it is thoroughly dry.

Do not put the jacket away just because the dryer cycle ended or the outside feels dry. The storage recommendation is for a fully dry garment. The sources do not give a standard number of hours for drying, so allow time according to the label’s method and the garment’s actual condition. When in doubt, postpone storage rather than storing it damp.

If the jacket looks flat before storage

First check whether it is fully dry and consult its care label. Montane describes tumble drying on low heat with two or three dryer balls or tennis balls, checking the jacket periodically, then shaking it once it is dry. Mountain Designs also describes using tennis balls with low or no heat to help restore loft. Follow the instructions for your own jacket; do not apply either method if its label does not allow it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A jacket that looks flat is not, by itself, a reason to wash or tumble dry it. Begin with the care label, then consider whether it needs cleaning and whether it is already fully dry. Haglöfs advises against frequent washing because it can remove down’s natural oils, so routine washing is not a default loft treatment. If the jacket needs airing, Haglöfs recommends airing regularly; if a drying or loft-restoring method is appropriate, use only one permitted by the garment’s instructions.

When an allowed tumble-drying method is used, follow the relevant maker’s details rather than improvising. Montane’s instructions mention low heat, two or three dryer balls or tennis balls, periodic checks, and shaking the garment once dry. Mountain Designs describes low or no heat with tennis balls. Neither should be presented as the right method for every product. The jacket’s own care label takes priority.

Once the jacket is dry and has had the care its label permits, store it loose. Do not try to preserve loft by buying a particular product or by guessing at a compression limit. The recommendations address how to store it: avoid long-term compression, keep it dry, and choose a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

These instructions do not establish a universal amount of loft loss from a particular storage duration or a numerical threshold for safe compression. They support a practical precaution: avoid leaving the jacket compressed for long-term storage, and give it room when you put it away.

A simple seasonal storage routine

When you are ready to put the jacket away, work through a short sequence. First, check the care label so you know which cleaning or drying methods are allowed. Second, decide whether the jacket actually needs washing; do not wash it automatically before storage. Third, if it has been washed or gotten wet, dry it thoroughly using only a method permitted by its label. Fourth, choose a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and keep it dark for long-term storage where possible. Finally, hang it, lay it flat, or fold it loosely so it is not held compressed.

As a last check, look for the two avoidable problems that manufacturer guidance emphasizes: dampness and long-term compression. Is the jacket fully dry? Is it out of its stuff sack? Does the chosen spot leave it loose rather than crowded beneath or between other items? If you want dust protection, add a breathable garment bag or loose cotton storage bag without squeezing the garment. If not, a suitable closet or shelf is enough.

This routine is intentionally simple. It does not require washing, a storage bag, a particular hanger, a prescribed fold, or a numerical rule about how long compression is acceptable. It uses the recommendations manufacturers provide while leaving room for the care instructions of the individual jacket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store my down jacket?

Make sure it is completely dry, then store it loose in a cool, dry place. Hanging is convenient, but laying it flat or folding it loosely also works. A breathable garment bag or loose cotton bag is optional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I store a down jacket in its stuff sack?

Use the stuff sack for carrying or short-term packing, not long-term seasonal storage. Montane and Odlo advise against keeping down compressed for extended periods. The guidance does not specify a universal time limit or quantify damage.

Is it better to hang or fold a down jacket?

Both are supported options. Mountain Designs and UNIQLO recommend hanging; Odlo allows laying a jacket flat, and Marmot says folding is suitable. Choose whichever position keeps it loose and clear of pressure from other clothes or heavy items.

Do I need a special storage bag for a down jacket?

No. UNIQLO suggests a breathable garment bag and Haglöfs suggests a loose cotton storage bag for optional dust protection. A clean, dry closet or shelf is also fine if the jacket is not crowded or compressed.

Should I wash my down jacket before storing it?

Not automatically. Haglöfs says frequent washing can remove down’s natural oils, recommends regular airing, and advises washing when needed. Follow your jacket’s care label and maker’s directions for whether and how to wash it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I tumble dry a down jacket to restore its loft?

Only if the jacket’s care label permits it. Montane describes low heat with two or three dryer balls or tennis balls, periodic checks, and shaking the jacket once dry. Mountain Designs describes low or no heat with tennis balls. These are maker-specific instructions, not universal directions.

Where should I keep a down jacket between seasons?

Choose a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UNIQLO also recommends a dark place for long-term storage, while Haglöfs emphasizes cool, dry conditions and avoiding direct sunlight.

The Bottom Line

Before seasonal storage, check the care label, clean the jacket only if needed, and make sure it is completely dry. Then take it out of its stuff sack and store it loose—hung, laid flat, or folded gently—in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A breathable garment bag or loose cotton cover is optional; keeping the jacket dry and uncompressed matters more.
