To keep a crypto wallet’s recovery phrase out of a browser, make no digital copy: write the words down privately on paper or a dedicated physical backup, then keep the complete, correctly ordered record in a secure location separate from the wallet. The phrase is a master secret—anyone who gets all the words in the right order may be able to access the wallet. Offline storage reduces online exposure, but it does not prevent theft, physical damage, or losing access to the backup.
What counts as a seed phrase—and why it needs protection
Wallets may call it a seed phrase, recovery phrase, recovery words, mnemonic, or Secret Recovery Phrase. In each case, treat the complete phrase as highly sensitive wallet-recovery information. Never share it with a person claiming to be support, enter it into a website, or provide it to anyone who asks for it. BitBox’s recovery-word storage guide, updated July 21, 2026, advises keeping the words offline and private.
Keeping the phrase off internet-connected devices addresses only one part of the problem. A physical backup can still be stolen, damaged, misplaced, or recorded inaccurately. Your plan needs to protect both confidentiality—other people cannot read it—and availability—you can retrieve and use it when needed.
How to make a browser-free backup
- Follow the wallet’s official setup or recovery process. Use the wallet maker’s trusted instructions and display. Do not copy words from a webpage or browser prompt. Recovery procedures and compatibility vary by wallet, so consult the instructions for the specific wallet you use.
- Record the phrase privately on a physical medium. Write it on paper or a dedicated physical backup card or plate. Do not type it into a browser, extension, computer, phone, password manager, cloud drive, email, screenshot, scanner, or printer workflow. These steps can create digital copies or expose the phrase to connected devices.
- Preserve every word and its position. Number the words and check spelling and order against the wallet’s trusted display or instructions. BitBox’s guide says to “Write each word clearly, number it, and preserve the exact order shown by the hardware wallet.” A missing, misspelled, or reordered word can prevent recovery.
- Store the complete record securely and separately. Choose a private physical location apart from the wallet and any password record. Avoid labels or containers that advertise the contents. Consider whether you could reach the backup during a move, travel disruption, emergency, or when someone you trust may need to handle your affairs.
- Decide deliberately whether to make a second copy. A separately secured copy may reduce the risk that one damaged or inaccessible location leaves you without recovery access, but every additional copy creates another opportunity for theft or discovery. BitBox notes that “There is no universal right number of copies.”
Paper or metal: choose for your physical risks

The right medium depends on your setting and priorities. A paper record may be adequate where it can be kept dry, protected, and private. Metal may suit someone prioritizing resistance to physical damage. The available guidance supports that general durability distinction; it does not establish that metal is fireproof, theft-proof, or safest for every household.

Why convenient digital storage does not meet this goal
A password manager, browser, cloud drive, email account, screenshot, or digital file may be easy to access, but each conflicts with the goal of keeping the phrase out of browsers and online accounts. Digital storage can create additional paths for exposure. BitBox explicitly advises against storing its recovery words this way.
A wallet-specific microSD backup is a different case: some supported devices offer it, but it remains sensitive wallet-recovery material and its support and recovery behavior depend on the wallet. Follow that device maker’s instructions rather than assuming it works like a universal backup.

Understand what a hardware wallet does—and does not do
A hardware wallet can keep private keys offline during ordinary use and act as a signing device, which can limit exposure of those keys to internet-connected computers. It does not replace a separately protected recovery backup: the device itself can be lost, stolen, or damaged. You must also check transaction details before approving them. Avoid recovery plans that are hard to use
Do not invent a code or split the words casually
Adding your own code, rearranging words, or dividing a phrase without a tested recovery plan can make the backup harder to restore. Extra complexity is not automatically better security if it increases the chance that you—or someone who must help—cannot reconstruct the phrase correctly.

Be cautious with an optional passphrase
Some wallet setups support an optional passphrase separate from the recovery words. It may lead to a separate wallet, and losing either the words or passphrase can make that wallet inaccessible. Use this advanced option only if you understand the wallet’s behavior and have a deliberate, secure plan to preserve both pieces.
Plan for emergencies and inheritance
A safe deposit box or off-site location may help in some circumstances, but consider whether you can reach it when needed and how a trusted person could access it if you cannot. A backup that is private but practically inaccessible may fail its recovery purpose.

What to do if the phrase may have been exposed
If someone has seen, photographed, copied, typed, or received the phrase, treat it as compromised. BitBox advises creating a new wallet with a new backup and moving the funds as soon as safely possible. Do not enter the exposed phrase into a website or send it to a support contact while trying to resolve the problem.
