To stop voice recordings from being retained, change the assistant’s account-level saving setting and separately remove recordings already stored. Those controls are different from muting a microphone or disabling a wake word: an assistant may still process a command you speak even when it no longer saves the audio to your account.
Three different privacy controls
Voice assistants handle several kinds of data, and one switch rarely controls all of them. Before changing anything, decide which outcome you need:
- Stop future account retention: prevents new audio samples from being kept in the provider account for service improvement, history or personalization.
- Delete existing history: removes recordings and related activity that were saved previously. Turning off future saving does not always perform this cleanup.
- Prevent voice activation: mutes a speaker microphone or disables a wake phrase such as “Hey Google.” This limits accidental activation, but it also prevents hands-free commands until you turn the control back on.
A phone or smart speaker can still process a request long enough to answer it when account saving is disabled. Local wake-word detection, Voice Match data and other on-device processing may also continue. The instructions below focus on the current controls documented for Apple, Google and Amazon products; menu names can change as operating systems, apps and account settings are updated.
Before changing anything, identify what is actually being saved
An assistant interaction can create more than one record. The original audio may be stored for service improvement or account activity. A transcript can remain as history even when the audio is gone. A typed request sent through an assistant app may follow text-retention rules rather than audio rules. Voice Match, Voice ID and other personalization data can also be kept separately so the service recognizes a user or tailors responses.

That is why a privacy cleanup should include both the recording history and the surrounding activity. If several people use a household speaker, check every signed-in account and profile. A change made on your phone does not automatically change a guest’s account, a second family account or a speaker configured from another device.
- Need hands-free commands: turn off account-level audio saving, but leave the assistant and microphone available.
- Need a clean history: change future retention and delete old audio, transcripts and typed requests separately where the provider offers those choices.
- Need silence in a sensitive room: use a physical microphone mute or disable the wake phrase in addition to changing retention.

The key comparison is not which brand has a single “privacy mode.” It is whether the setting stops future account retention, whether older items need a separate deletion command, whether text remains after audio is removed, and whether a hardware control is needed to prevent activation altogether.
iPhone, iPad and HomePod: limit Siri and Dictation audio sharing
Turn off the improvement-sharing setting
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements. Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation. Some current Apple software labels the control Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence instead.
Apple describes this as an optional contribution of audio samples and transcripts for developing its services. It is not a universal “no audio processing” switch. Siri and Dictation still process the words needed to return an answer, transcribe text or carry out an instruction.
HomePod follows the improvement-sharing choice on the iPhone or iPad used to set up the speaker. If several people have configured speakers from different Apple devices, check which device was used for each setup and verify the setting there.
If the label is missing, first confirm that the device is signed in to the Apple Account associated with Siri and that the operating system is current. Apple can move labels between Siri, Apple Intelligence and privacy menus, so use the setting’s description rather than assuming that a similarly named analytics option controls recordings.
Delete Siri and Dictation history separately
Apple’s detailed documented deletion procedure is for a Mac, not an iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, open System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri on some versions), then choose Delete Siri & Dictation History. An internet connection is required.
Apple says this removes request history—audio and transcripts—associated with a random identifier and less than six months old. Deleting that history does not change the sharing preference. If the improvement setting remains enabled, future samples can still be contributed until you turn it off.
Apple’s documented Mac path should not be presented as an iPhone path. If the deletion command is not shown on your iPhone or iPad, use the controls available in that software version and check Apple’s current support instructions rather than assuming that disabling sharing erased older requests. Removing history also does not disable Siri, Dictation or a HomePod microphone.

Google Assistant on Android and Google or Nest speakers
Stop saving new Assistant audio to the Google Account
In the Google Account, open Data & privacy > Web & App Activity. Clear Include voice and audio activity, then confirm the change if Google asks.
Google says that, with this setting off, Assistant no longer saves audio recordings in the Google Account on Google servers with Web & App Activity when you interact with Assistant. The setting applies wherever you are signed in to Assistant, including the Assistant app and a Google or Nest speaker using that account.

This change does not stop Assistant from processing audio to answer a request. It also does not guarantee that every local data element disappears: Google identifies possible on-device data used for Voice Match or personalization, in addition to account activity.
Do not confuse this control with the broader Web & App Activity switch. You can leave general activity enabled while excluding voice and audio, but any automatic retention period selected for Web & App Activity applies to the entire activity category, not just spoken commands.
Remove recordings that were already saved
From the same Web & App Activity area, select Manage activity to open My Activity. Delete individual Assistant items, select a group of items, or choose an activity-retention option.
Retention choices apply to Web & App Activity as a whole, not only to voice recordings. Review that broader scope before selecting an automatic deletion period. Turning off Include voice and audio activity alone leaves old recordings in place until you remove them.

Deleting one visible event is safer when you want to preserve unrelated search, Maps or app history; a bulk action is more suitable when you intend to clear the whole activity category.
Stop a Nest speaker from listening for a wake phrase
If your priority is preventing a speaker from responding to an accidental wake word, mute the Nest device microphone or turn off “Hey Google”. These are activation controls, not substitutes for reviewing Google Account activity.
Google notes that audio can be captured after a false activation. Review My Activity and delete a mistaken interaction when that happens. Muting the microphone is the stronger immediate measure, but it also disables voice commands until the hardware control is restored.

Choose how long Alexa keeps recordings
In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy. On an Echo Show, open the corresponding Alexa Privacy controls on the device. Select Manage Your Alexa Data.

Amazon provides three relevant choices: automatic deletion after three months, automatic deletion after 18 months, or an option not to save voice recordings. Select the shortest period that meets your need, or choose the no-save option if you do not want recordings retained after processing.
Amazon says that choosing not to save recordings automatically deletes recordings after requests are processed and removes existing voice recordings associated with the account. That setting affects audio; it does not mean every text record disappears at the same instant.
These are account retention choices, not a promise that an Echo will never hear a sound. The device still has to detect and process an intentional request while its microphone is active. Use the device’s microphone button when you need a stronger boundary.
Review, play and delete Alexa history
In Alexa Privacy, open Review Alexa History. You can inspect recordings, transcripts and typed requests, then delete individual interactions or groups of them. Use this review step even after changing the retention choice so you can identify old items, false wakes or requests made through a third-party skill.

If an interaction involved a skill, note the skill name while reviewing the entry. The assistant history page can show what Alexa retained, but it cannot guarantee deletion from the developer’s own systems.
Understand what Alexa deletion cannot cover
- Deleting an interaction can reduce personalization and some features. Voice ID will not work if you choose not to save recordings.
- Cloud deletion can take time, and records needed to support an ongoing function may remain while that function operates.
- Data held by a third-party skill developer or outside Amazon’s cloud is not necessarily removed by Alexa’s account deletion control. Check the privacy terms of skills used for sensitive tasks.
Account saving versus microphone shutdown
Disabling retention answers “Will the provider keep this audio in my account?” It does not answer “Can the device hear a wake phrase?” A speaker must normally listen locally for its activation phrase, and an assistant must process an intentional request to respond. For a stronger privacy boundary during a meeting, medical discussion or other sensitive situation, use the device’s physical microphone mute or disable the wake phrase as well as changing account retention.
On a phone, turning off Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa access entirely is a separate device-permission decision from deleting cloud history. The controls in this guide do not claim to disable every microphone, keyboard dictation service, app integration or third-party skill.

A mute button also has an operational cost: reminders, calls, home controls and other hands-free actions will not work until the microphone is enabled again. If you only want to prevent a speaker from answering in one room, muting that device is narrower than disabling the assistant on every phone and speaker.
A practical cleanup sequence
Use this order when you want both future protection and a clean history:
- Identify every signed-in assistant account. Check the phone, each smart speaker and any household account that can issue commands. A setting changed for one account does not automatically change a different account.
- Turn off or shorten future retention. Use Apple’s improvement control, Google’s Include voice and audio activity setting, or Alexa’s retention selector.
- Open the provider’s activity history. Use Apple’s documented Mac deletion command, Google My Activity, or Alexa Review Alexa History.
- Delete old recordings and related text records. Remove individual items when you need to preserve unrelated history; use the provider’s bulk or automatic option when you want broader cleanup.
- Decide whether to block activation. Mute a Nest microphone, turn off “Hey Google,” or use the applicable hardware mute control when you do not want the speaker listening for commands.
- Check connected services. Review third-party Alexa skills and other integrations that may maintain their own records outside the assistant provider’s cloud.
- Verify after the next command. Issue a non-sensitive test request, wait for activity to synchronize, and confirm whether an audio item, transcript or typed request appears under the account.
Keep a note of which account and device you changed. That makes it easier to repeat the cleanup after a factory reset, a new speaker setup or a family member’s account change.
What to do when a recording still appears
The setting was changed on the wrong account
Sign-in status is a common cause. Compare the account shown in the Google Account, Alexa app or Apple device settings with the account used by the speaker. Household speakers may accept requests from multiple profiles.

That is expected for Google and for Apple’s separate history control. Return to Google My Activity and delete the item, or use Apple’s Mac history deletion procedure. For Alexa, review whether the item is audio, a transcript or a typed request; the no-save audio choice does not make text records disappear before the stated 30-day period.
You still hear the device respond
Account retention and activation are independent. A device can continue processing a spoken request without saving the audio to the account. Mute the microphone or disable the wake phrase when you need to stop voice activation itself.
A feature stopped working
Alexa warns that Voice ID will not work without saved recordings, and Amazon says deleting interactions may reduce personalization. Similar trade-offs can occur when Voice Match or other personalization data is removed. Re-enable only the specific feature you need, rather than restoring every retention option by default.

- Processing is not the same as retention. The assistant may analyze a request to answer it even when account-level saving is off.
- Audio is not the only record. Transcripts, typed requests, account activity and personalization data can have separate retention rules.
- Deletion is not always instantaneous. Providers may need time to remove cloud copies, and records supporting an active function can persist temporarily.
- False activations are possible. Review activity periodically, especially if a speaker responds when no one intended to address it.
- Third parties may have separate copies. A skill or integration can operate under its own privacy terms outside the assistant provider’s account controls.
Which setting should you choose?
Choose the control that matches the risk you are trying to reduce:
- You want less provider-held audio but still want hands-free commands: disable account-level audio saving and keep the microphone active.
- You want to remove your historical record: change future retention and complete the separate deletion step for each provider.
- You do not want the speaker to react in a room: mute its microphone or disable the wake phrase; account settings alone are not enough.
- You use Voice ID or personalized responses: expect reduced functionality if you choose Alexa’s no-save option or remove personalization-related data.
Recheck these controls after a major operating-system, assistant-app or account change. Labels and menu locations can move, and a newly added speaker may inherit a different account or setup device than the one you originally configured.

Does turning off voice and audio activity stop Google Assistant from listening?

Possibly. Amazon says data held by a third-party skill developer or outside Amazon’s cloud is not necessarily removed by Alexa’s account deletion control. Check the skill’s own privacy terms.
The Bottom Line
For each assistant, first disable future account-level audio saving, then delete existing history. Google and Apple require separate cleanup steps; Alexa offers a no-save option plus three- or 18-month retention choices, while text records can follow a separate 30-day rule. If you also need to stop the device from reacting in the room, mute its microphone or disable the wake phrase.
