To stop a phone from keeping a travel history, you must do two things: disable the history feature and erase records already saved. On an iPhone, switch off Significant Locations (called Significant Locations & Routes on some versions), tap Clear History, and review each app’s location permission. On Android, turn off and delete Google Maps Timeline, then check app permissions, Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning, and Bluetooth scanning. These history controls are separate from live location access, so deleting a timeline alone does not stop every app from using your location.
What changes when you turn off location history
Location history is a record of places and journeys saved over time. It is different from a map app using your current position for navigation, weather, delivery, or another feature. A phone can therefore stop saving a long-term history while still allowing Maps to access your location when you use it.
- History controls stop a service from building or retaining a chronological record.
- Per-app permissions decide which apps can request your location and when.
- Device-level controls affect location calculations used by many features at once.
- Deletion is a separate action. Turning a feature off does not necessarily erase records that already exist.
Emergency location is an exception to ordinary privacy settings. Apple and Google documentation explains that emergency responders or a carrier may still receive enhanced location during an emergency call or text.

1. Turn off Significant Locations
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Scroll down and choose System Services.
- Tap Significant Locations. On some iOS versions, this is labelled Significant Locations & Routes.
- Turn the feature off and authenticate with your passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID if prompted.
Significant Locations is the iPhone system feature that keeps a list of places considered important to you. Apple says the data is end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.

2. Delete the existing Significant Locations list
Remain on the Significant Locations screen and tap Clear History. Apple says this removes significant locations from devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Switching the toggle off without using Clear History leaves the existing list in place.
3. Restrict individual apps without breaking Maps
Go back to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. The list shows every app that has requested location access. Open an app and choose the narrowest option that still supports what you need:
- Never blocks location access for that app.
- Ask Next Time Or When I Share makes iOS request permission again when the app needs location.
- While Using the App permits location while the app is open or actively being used.
- Always, where offered, permits background access and should be reserved for an app whose background feature you deliberately use.
For apps that only need a general area, turn Precise Location off. The app then receives an approximate location instead of the phone’s most exact position. Keep precise access on for turn-by-turn navigation if the app needs it to guide you accurately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Review system location services
Choose Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services to inspect Apple’s additional location-based functions. Disable individual services you do not need rather than switching off Location Services globally by default. Apple warns that turning off Location Services can stop important iPhone features, including functions that depend on finding the device or determining where you are.
5. Check Maps Visited Places and route suggestions
Apple Maps has records that are related to, but distinct from, the Significant Locations switch. Apple’s privacy documentation says Visited Places, Preferred Routes, and Predicted Destinations require Significant Locations & Routes and Maps location access.

In Maps, open Library > Visits and review the Keep Visits setting. This controls how long Maps retains visited-place entries. Deleting Significant Locations does not replace a review of Maps’ own visit history, so check both areas when you want the broadest cleanup.
Apple says Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted. The information is designed so that Apple cannot read it, but it can still appear on your devices if the related features remain enabled.

6. Understand what the global switch does
The master control is Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Turning it off prevents most apps and system services from obtaining location, but it can impair navigation, location-based automations, weather information, device-finding features, and other functions. Use the master switch when you need a short-term shutdown; use per-app permissions and Significant Locations for a more practical everyday setup.
Apple also describes a separate, privacy-protected use of location data for crowdsourced databases. With Location Services enabled, an iPhone may periodically send encrypted, geo-tagged information about nearby Wi-Fi networks and cell towers. While you travel, it may also send GPS position, speed, direction, and barometric pressure for these databases. Apple says this information is encrypted and not personally identifying; it is not the same as the Significant Locations list.

1. Turn off Google Maps Timeline
Google Maps Timeline is a Google Account feature. Google says it is off by default and can only be enabled when you opt in. If enabled, it regularly saves precise device location to your Timeline, including at times when Google apps are not open.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Delete Timeline records that are already stored
Turning Timeline off stops future collection, but it does not by itself remove the past. In Timeline controls, choose the option to delete location history, then select the period you want to remove. Google provides controls to delete the whole Timeline or only part of it.
If you prefer automatic cleanup, configure auto-delete in the Timeline controls. Auto-delete removes records on the schedule you select instead of keeping them indefinitely. Review the confirmation screen carefully before accepting a deletion because the action can remove a large amount of travel history.
3. Remove location access from individual apps
Open Android Settings > Location and review the app permissions page. Android versions and manufacturers use slightly different wording, but the controls generally let you select:
- Allow all the time for background access, when an app genuinely needs it.
- Allow only while using the app for foreground use such as navigation.
- Ask every time, where available, so access is requested per use.
- Don’t allow to remove location access entirely.
On supported Android versions, you can also choose approximate rather than precise location for an app. Use approximate access for services that need your general area but not a street-level position. Keep navigation apps at precise, while-in-use access if you expect reliable route guidance.

4. Reduce device-level location inputs
On Android 12 and later, open Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy. Turn Improve Location Accuracy off if you do not want Android to combine GPS with nearby Wi-Fi networks and cell towers for a faster or more precise position.
In the same Location Services area, review Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. These are separate switches. When enabled, they allow the phone to scan for nearby networks or Bluetooth devices to improve location estimates, even when Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is not being used for a connection.
With Location Accuracy disabled, Google says the phone may rely only on GPS and device sensors when available. That can make a position slower to obtain or less accurate, and it can affect Google Maps, location-based apps, and finding a lost device.
5. Decide whether to disable the Android location switch
The main device control is Settings > Location. Turning Location off limits location access broadly, but it also reduces the functionality of navigation, local search, ride and delivery apps, geofencing, and lost-device tools. If your aim is to stop a history while keeping Maps usable, leave the device switch on, disable Timeline, and use per-app permissions instead.
Emergency Location Service or a mobile carrier may still transmit enhanced location during an emergency call or text. Turning off ordinary location settings is not a guarantee that emergency systems will be unable to locate a handset.

Choose the least disruptive privacy setting
You want no travel history but still need navigation
- On iPhone, turn off Significant Locations and tap Clear History, then leave Location Services on for Maps with While Using and Precise Location enabled if needed.
- On Android, turn off and delete Timeline, then allow Maps only while you use it.
- Do not disable the entire device location switch unless you also accept losing normal navigation and location features.
You want to stop one app from knowing where you are
- Open the platform’s app-specific location permissions.
- Choose Never or Don’t allow if the app has no legitimate location need.
- Choose While Using or approximate location if you want the feature to work with less exposure.
- Recheck apps after major updates because permission prompts and available choices can change.
You want to reduce precision rather than block location
Use iPhone’s Precise Location switch or Android’s approximate-location option for the individual app. This preserves a regional location while withholding the most exact position. On Android, also consider Location Accuracy and the separate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning switches if you want to reduce device-level location inputs.
You are worried about a lost phone
Do not switch off every location feature without considering recovery. Apple and Google both warn, in different ways, that broad location changes can reduce the accuracy or availability of device-finding tools. A targeted history shutdown preserves more recovery functionality than a permanent global shutdown.
After changing the settings, verify the result
- Open the iPhone Significant Locations screen and confirm the switch remains off; the list should no longer contain the entries you cleared.
- Open Maps Visited Places on iPhone and check its Keep Visits setting if you also want to limit map-specific records.
- In Google Maps, open Your Timeline and confirm that Timeline is off and that the selected history has been deleted.
- Review Android and iPhone app permission lists for apps that still have background or always-on access.
- Check Android Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning, and Bluetooth scanning separately; changing Timeline does not change these switches.
- Test essential functions such as navigation, weather, device finding, and emergency features after making broad changes.
Common mistakes and fixes
Turning off history but leaving old records
This is the most common incomplete cleanup. Use Clear History on iPhone and the deletion controls in Google Maps Timeline on Android. A disabled toggle controls future behavior; it is not automatically a deletion command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Deleting a timeline but leaving app permissions unchanged
Timeline deletion does not revoke location access from social, shopping, transportation, fitness, or other apps. Review each permission separately and choose the narrowest setting that supports the feature you use.
Disabling Location Services and losing useful features
A global switch is more disruptive than a per-app change. If navigation or device finding stops working, restore Location Services on iPhone or Location on Android, then narrow access through the app-level controls instead.
Assuming approximate location stops all collection
Approximate location reduces precision for the selected app; it does not create a universal no-location mode. Other apps with permission, system services, Timeline, or scanning features may still operate under their own settings.
Expecting a physical signal blocker to erase history
Blocking signals can interrupt a phone’s communications temporarily, but it cannot delete records already stored in an Apple Account, on a device, or in a Google Account. The supported solution is to use the platform’s history and permission controls, then delete existing data.

Stopping Significant Locations or Timeline prevents those particular history systems from continuing to build a record, but it does not make a phone invisible. An app may receive location under its own permission, a mobile network can handle emergency communications, and platform services can use location for functions that remain enabled. Privacy improves when you treat history, app access, scanning, precision, and emergency behavior as separate controls rather than relying on one master switch.
