Start with Settings > Battery > View details. That screen identifies the app or service consuming the most power, so you can fix the actual cause instead of changing every battery setting at once. Then install all available One UI and app updates, run Samsung’s optimizer, restrict unnecessary background activity, and test reception or 5G if the phone is warm or loses charge mainly on mobile data.
If the drain continues after those checks, restart the phone and use Safe mode to determine whether a downloaded app is responsible. Persistent rapid drain in Safe mode needs Samsung service diagnostics rather than another accessory or random setting change.
Find what is using the battery first
Battery drain is often traceable to one app or background process. Samsung’s troubleshooting flow begins with the battery report because it gives you evidence before you disable features that you may actually need.

- Review the battery graph for the period in which the charge fell quickly.
- Tap View details and inspect the apps or services listed as using power.
- Note whether the same app appears during idle time, while the screen is off, or only during active use.
An app near the top is not automatically faulty: a navigation, video, camera, or game app can legitimately use substantial power while you are using it. The useful clue is disproportionate activity when you were not using the app, especially if the phone was warm or the graph fell while the screen was off. Investigate the highest-impact item before applying broader restrictions.

Take a screenshot or write down the list if you plan to change several settings. That gives you a before-and-after reference when you check the report again.
Update One UI, Galaxy Store apps, and Play Store apps
Out-of-date system or app software can leave a power-heavy process running incorrectly. Samsung’s firmware guidance tells Galaxy S24 Ultra owners to keep the phone current and check for updates regularly.
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install. The wording can vary by carrier or software build.
- Install any available update and restart when prompted.
- Open the Galaxy Store, go to its app-update area, and install pending updates.
- Open the Play Store, open your account menu, choose the app-update option, and install pending updates.
Check the battery report again after the phone has completed its update and restart cycle. Do not judge a single app solely from the first few minutes after an update; compare its behavior during the same type of use that originally revealed the drain.

Run Samsung’s built-in optimization
Samsung’s Device care tool can close unused processes and flag settings that increase consumption. It is a quick, reversible step and does not require removing personal data.
- Close apps you are not using.
- Open Settings > Device care.
- Tap Optimize now.
- Review the result and apply any suggested cleanup that you understand.
Also disable push notifications for apps that do not need to alert you immediately. A notification permission does not prove an app is the main culprit, but removing unnecessary alerts reduces avoidable wake-ups and lets you focus on the apps identified in Battery > View details.

Control background activity without breaking essential apps
Apps that refresh continuously can consume power even when you are not looking at them. Samsung provides graduated controls so you can limit low-priority apps while keeping messaging, work, navigation, or security apps available.
Put unused apps to sleep
In Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, enable Put unused apps to sleep. The phone can then move apps you rarely open into a lower-activity state. This is a sensible first restriction because it targets neglect rather than every app.
Add specific apps to Sleeping apps
Use the Sleeping apps list in the same Background usage limits area for apps that do not need continuous background work. Sleeping is reversible: remove an app from the list if it stops refreshing when you expect it to.
Use Deep sleeping apps only for low-priority software
Deep sleeping apps run only when you open them. They are appropriate for shopping, games, infrequently used social apps, or other software that does not need to deliver immediate alerts. They can delay notifications and background refresh, so do not place a time-critical messaging, authentication, health, or work app there without testing the consequences.
After changing a list, use the phone normally for a while and check Battery > View details again. If the app no longer consumes idle power but its notifications arrive late, the restriction is working as designed; decide whether that trade-off is acceptable.

Use adaptive battery, Power saving, and the Light performance profile
Adaptive battery
Enable Adaptive battery in the phone’s battery settings. Samsung says it learns your usage patterns to extend battery life. Its benefit comes from reducing background work for apps you use less often, so results vary with your routine rather than appearing as a fixed percentage improvement.
Power saving
Turn on Power saving when you need longer runtime or when you are away from a charger. It reduces performance and background activity. Google’s Android guidance notes that Battery Saver can turn on Dark theme and limit or turn off background activity; visual effects, some features, network connections, and apps may experience delays.
Use it deliberately rather than leaving it on without considering the effects. A delayed sync or slower task may be preferable during travel, but it can be inconvenient for real-time communication or demanding work.
Light performance profile
Samsung also offers a Light performance profile that prioritizes battery life over processing speed. Choose it when everyday responsiveness is adequate and you prefer lower sustained power use. Return to the standard profile for workloads that need maximum processing performance.

Check the display and mobile-network load
Reduce screen power
Lower brightness when the screen is brighter than necessary. Adaptive brightness can be useful if you move between dark and bright environments, because it adjusts output instead of leaving the panel at a manually high level. Check whether the battery graph falls mainly during long screen-on sessions before blaming background apps.

Test reception and 5G
Weak, changing, or congested reception can make the phone work harder to maintain service. Samsung explains that a 5G phone may maintain a 3G or LTE connection alongside 5G; as a result, the battery can drain faster than expected and the phone can become warmer than when using only 3G or LTE. Coverage in your location is therefore a major variable.
To test the network as a cause, compare battery behavior in a location with strong, stable reception and in the place where the drain normally occurs. If your carrier’s software exposes a preferred-network setting, temporarily test an LTE-only option and compare speed, heat, and battery loss. The exact label and availability vary by carrier and software build; changing it can reduce speed or 5G availability, so treat this as a diagnostic rather than a universal recommendation.
When the phone is hot and the battery report shows little app activity, network conditions deserve more attention. When one app dominates the report even on Wi-Fi with strong reception, focus on that app instead.

A restart clears a stuck process and reloads system services. It is simple, reversible, and useful after updates or a major settings change.

- Open the power menu.
- Tap Restart and confirm.
- After the phone boots, use it normally rather than immediately opening every app.
- Return to Settings > Battery > View details and compare the new pattern with the earlier one.
If the same service quickly returns to the top of the report, continue with Safe mode instead of repeatedly restarting.

Use Safe mode to isolate a downloaded app
Safe mode is the clean test for third-party software. Samsung describes it this way: “Using Safe mode disables all downloaded apps and loads only the original software that came with your phone or tablet, allowing you to determine if the issue is caused by an app or with the device itself.”
- Open the power menu.
- Touch and hold Power off.
- Tap Safe mode.
- Use the phone long enough to reproduce the same conditions that caused the rapid drain. Check temperature, idle loss, and the battery report.
- Restart normally to exit Safe mode.
If the drain largely disappears in Safe mode, a downloaded app is the leading suspect. Uninstall recently added or recently updated apps one at a time, restart, and retest after each removal. This one-change-at-a-time method identifies the offending app without forcing you to remove everything.
If the drain remains in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause. Continue with the system-update, network, display, and service checks rather than bulk-uninstalling unrelated software.
A practical decision path for common symptoms
The battery report names one app
- Update that app from the Galaxy Store or Play Store.
- Check whether it is allowed to run in the background when it does not need to.
- Move it to Sleeping apps, or Deep sleeping apps if delayed notifications are acceptable.
- Retest and remove it temporarily if Safe mode or one-at-a-time uninstall testing points to it.
The phone loses charge while idle
- Check View details for background activity.
- Enable Adaptive battery and Put unused apps to sleep.
- Review notification permissions for low-priority apps.
- Restart and compare an overnight or screen-off period under similar reception conditions.
The phone is hot during mobile-data use
- Check reception where the heat occurs.
- Compare behavior on a strong Wi-Fi connection.
- Test whether 5G or changing coverage is involved, using the carrier’s available network controls.
- Use Power saving temporarily if you need to preserve charge while diagnosing the issue.
The problem began after installing or updating an app
- Check that app’s position in Battery > View details.
- Restart the phone.
- Use Safe mode to see whether the drain disappears without downloaded apps.
- Remove the suspected app, then reinstall only after confirming that the battery behavior has stabilized.
The report does not identify an obvious app
- Install all system and app updates.
- Run Device care > Optimize now.
- Check brightness, reception, 5G behavior, and background limits.
- Use Safe mode to separate downloaded-app issues from device-level issues.
When to contact Samsung service
Escalate when rapid drain persists after updates, optimization, background limits, a restart, and Safe mode testing. Samsung advises visiting a walk-in service center or scheduling a repair when those software checks do not resolve the problem.
Before contacting service, record the conditions that reproduce the drain: starting charge, approximate time, screen-on or idle use, Wi-Fi or mobile data, reception quality, phone temperature, and the items shown in Battery > View details. This information gives a technician a reproducible description instead of a general complaint that the battery is “bad.”
A persistent problem in Safe mode, especially when it occurs with strong reception and little active use, is a reason to seek diagnostics rather than buying a generic charger, cooling accessory, or monitoring app. The built-in reports and Samsung service path are the evidence-based next steps.
What each intervention can and cannot prove
Changing a setting and seeing a better graph does not always identify the original cause. Sleeping an app may reduce its activity, but it does not prove that the app was defective; it may simply confirm that its background work was contributing to consumption. Likewise, an LTE-only test can show that 5G or changing coverage affects runtime in one location, not that 5G is inherently harmful everywhere.
Safe mode provides the clearest separation: improvement points toward downloaded software, while unchanged drain makes a third-party app less likely. The battery report then helps you choose which app to remove or which system condition to investigate next.
