To stop password-save prompts, disable the browser’s password-saving setting—not merely autofill. In Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, turn off the setting labeled Offer to save passwords or Ask to save passwords. Safari’s documented controls are under AutoFill and should be treated separately: they control whether saved credentials are filled, and Apple’s cited instructions do not establish that every Safari save prompt is disabled. Turning off a prompt or autofill does not delete passwords already stored.
First decide what you want to turn off
“Stop saving passwords” can describe three different actions. Choosing the right one prevents an unwanted side effect, such as losing convenient sign-in help when you only wanted to stop a question that appears after every login.
| Goal | Setting or action | What happens to passwords already saved |
|---|---|---|
| Stop the browser asking whether to remember a new login | Disable the browser’s password-saving prompt setting | Existing entries are not described as being erased by these toggles |
| Stop usernames and passwords being inserted into login forms | Disable password AutoFill or the equivalent autofill control | Stored entries can remain available in the password manager |
| Remove credentials already stored | Delete entries from the browser’s password manager, and review any enabled sync service | Deleted entries may also disappear from synchronized devices, depending on the service |
| Keep prompts for most sites but suppress them on selected sites | Use a per-site exception, where the browser provides one | Other saved entries and prompts are unaffected |
The first row is the usual answer to “How do I stop my browser from offering to save passwords?” The second row is different: it changes whether existing credentials are offered or inserted. The third is a separate cleanup task.
Compare the available controls before changing anything
| Browser and platform | Prompt control | Autofill control covered by the instructions | Site-specific option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome on a computer | Offer to save passwords and passkeys | Separate password-use and autofill controls | No site-level exception is identified here |
| Firefox | Ask to save passwords | Separate password-use or autofill controls | Exceptions > Block |
| Microsoft Edge | Ask to save passwords | Separate controls in Microsoft Password Manager | No site-level exception is identified here |
| Safari on Mac | No universal save-prompt switch is established by the cited Apple instructions | AutoFill pane, clear User names and passwords | Not established by the cited instructions |
| Safari on iPhone | No universal save-prompt switch is established by the cited Apple instructions | AutoFill Passwords under AutoFill & Passwords | Not established by the cited instructions |
This comparison matters because a prompt setting and an autofill setting answer different questions. If you want to keep existing credentials available but stop being asked to store new ones, change only the prompt control where one is documented. If you want no credentials to appear in forms, change the autofill control as well.

What to identify before troubleshooting
- The device and browser: Settings differ between a computer, an iPhone, and other platforms. The paths below are platform-specific.
- The wording and location of the prompt: A browser dialog, a webpage message, and a password-manager extension notification can look different and are controlled by different software.
- Your desired end state: Decide whether you want to keep autofill, remove stored entries, or only silence new save questions.
- The account or profile in use: A desktop browser can have multiple profiles, and a managed computer can apply organization policies. Change the setting in the profile that actually displays the prompt.
- Synchronization: If you plan to delete credentials, determine whether they are held locally, in an account-based browser manager, in iCloud Keychain, or in another password application.
These checks avoid the most common mistake: turning off autofill when the real problem is a save question, or deleting data when a single preference would have solved the interruption.
Stop password-save prompts in Google Chrome on a computer
Turn off the global prompt
- Open Chrome.
- Choose More (the three-dot menu), then Passwords and autofill.
- Open Google Password Manager.
- Select Settings.
- Switch off Offer to save passwords and passkeys.
After this switch is off, Chrome’s Password Manager should no longer ask whether to save newly entered passwords or passkeys through that setting. The exact menu placement can move between Chrome releases. If you cannot see the path, open Chrome Settings and search for Offer to save passwords.
If you still want passwords filled automatically
Do not disable the entire autofill function just to silence the save question. Chrome’s save-prompt switch and its controls for using stored credentials have different purposes. Leave the autofill or password-use controls enabled if you want Chrome to continue filling credentials that are already in Google Password Manager.
What this does not do
Turning off Offer to save passwords and passkeys is a preference for future save offers. It is not a command to erase entries already held in Password Manager. If removal is your goal, open the manager separately and delete the relevant records, taking care to distinguish local data from any synchronized copy.
Stop Firefox from asking to save passwords
Disable all save requests
- Open Firefox’s menu and choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Passwords and autofill.
- In the Passwords section, clear Ask to save passwords.
Firefox documents this as the general switch for stopping its password-saving questions. If the labels are arranged differently in your release, use the Settings search field for Ask to save passwords.
Block prompts only on particular websites
Firefox is the browser in this guide with an explicitly documented site-level exception workflow.
- Leave Ask to save passwords enabled.
- In the same Passwords section, select Exceptions.
- Enter the address of the website that should not generate a save question.
- Choose Block, then save the exception.
This approach keeps the feature available elsewhere while suppressing it for the sites you identify. Enter the site address carefully; an exception for one address does not necessarily cover a different subdomain or a separate sign-in domain.

Keep autofill while removing the question
The save request and the use of credentials already stored in Firefox are separate decisions. If you want Firefox to fill existing logins, change only Ask to save passwords and leave the password-use or autofill controls alone. Clearing every password-related option can produce a result different from the one you intended.
Stop Microsoft Edge from asking to save passwords
Turn off the prompt
- Open Edge and choose Settings.
- Open Passwords and autofill.
- Select Microsoft Password Manager.
- Turn off Ask to save passwords.
Edge’s wording and menu placement can vary by release. Search Edge Settings for the exact phrase Ask to save passwords if the navigation does not match these labels.
Preserve stored-login use if desired
Disabling the ask-to-save option addresses new save offers. It does not, by itself, instruct Edge to delete credentials already in Microsoft Password Manager or to stop using them for autofill. Review those controls independently if your actual goal is to prevent credentials from appearing in login fields.
Safari on a Mac: understand the AutoFill limitation
Disable username and password AutoFill
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari in the menu bar, then Settings.
- Open the AutoFill pane.
- Clear User names and passwords.
Apple describes this pane as the place to control saved usernames and passwords that Safari can fill. Therefore, this setting is the documented way to stop Safari from offering or inserting stored credentials through AutoFill on a Mac.
Why this is not the same as a confirmed save-prompt switch
The cited Mac instruction concerns AutoFill. It does not establish that clearing User names and passwords suppresses every website question asking to create or save a credential. If a dialog still appears after AutoFill is disabled, identify whether Safari, a website, or another password tool generated it before changing additional settings.
Keep or remove stored entries
Clearing the AutoFill checkbox should not be presented as deleting Safari’s stored passwords. Apple separately documents that iCloud Keychain can keep website login details up to date across devices when it is enabled. If you want credentials removed, manage the entries in the relevant password store and consider the effect of synchronization on other devices.
Safari on iPhone: turn off password AutoFill
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Choose General.
- Tap AutoFill & Passwords.
- Turn off AutoFill Passwords.
Apple’s iPhone guide documents this control for AutoFill. It stops the system from offering or inserting saved passwords through that feature, but the cited instructions do not establish that every website or system prompt to create or save credentials is disabled. Treat a continuing prompt as a separate diagnostic problem rather than assuming the switch failed.

As on the Mac, disabling AutoFill is not the same as deleting stored credentials. Review the password store separately if you need to remove entries or change how they synchronize.

Save prompts, autofill, and deletion are separate controls
Save prompt
A save prompt appears after you submit credentials and asks whether the browser should remember them. Chrome labels its control Offer to save passwords and passkeys; Firefox and Edge use Ask to save passwords. These are the controls to change when the interruption itself is the problem.
Autofill
Autofill determines whether credentials that are already stored are offered or inserted into a sign-in form. Apple’s documented Safari paths are specifically AutoFill controls on Mac and iPhone. Disabling autofill can stop suggestions in fields without necessarily changing how a browser handles a separate save dialog.
Deleting existing passwords
Deleting is an account-and-data decision, not a prompt preference. The toggles above do not say that they erase stored entries. Before deleting, check whether the browser synchronizes passwords; a deletion in a synchronized store can affect other devices connected to the same account.
Common pitfalls that make the change seem ineffective
Changing the wrong control
If you clear an AutoFill checkbox but a browser still asks whether to remember a newly entered login, you changed the form-filling behavior, not necessarily the save behavior. Conversely, turning off a save prompt will not necessarily remove suggestions from fields that already contain stored credentials.
Assuming every Safari control has the same scope
Safari on Mac and Safari on iPhone both expose AutoFill-related settings, but the documented paths do not prove a universal switch for every save or account-creation prompt. A website can display its own message, and another password tool can present a separate notification.
Entering an incomplete Firefox exception
Firefox’s exception workflow is address-based. A site may use a different sign-in domain or subdomain from its main home page. If a prompt continues, verify the exact address shown when you sign in and add the appropriate exception rather than assuming one entry covers every related address.

Editing one profile while using another
On a computer with multiple browser profiles, each profile can have its own password settings and saved entries. Make the change while the profile that displays the prompt is active. Organization-managed computers may also enforce settings that you cannot override locally.
Deleting before checking sync
A password that returns after deletion may have been synchronized from another device or store. Identify the account and service first, then decide whether the requirement is to stop future save offers or to remove every synchronized copy.

When the prompt continues after you change the setting
Confirm which interface is speaking
Look at the wording, icon, and location of the dialog. A browser’s own prompt usually appears with its browser branding and matches the labels above. A prompt inside a webpage may be generated by the site’s script. A separate password manager may display its own extension or desktop notification. The browser settings in this guide cannot be assumed to suppress a third-party or website-generated prompt.
Search the current settings
Browser menus are version- and platform-sensitive. Use the settings search field and enter the quoted label for your browser: Offer to save passwords in Chrome, or Ask to save passwords in Firefox and Edge. On Apple devices, search for AutoFill or AutoFill Passwords and verify that you are changing the setting on the device where the prompt appears.
Check the correct browser profile
Desktop browsers can have multiple profiles, and managed computers may apply organization policies. A setting changed in one profile may not affect another. Switch to the profile that displays the prompt and check its password settings again before changing data or deleting entries.
Test with a controlled sign-in
- Close any existing sign-in tab for the site.
- Reopen the browser or tab after changing the setting.
- Sign in once and observe whether the prompt is a browser dialog, an extension prompt, or content embedded in the page.
- If only one site still asks, test a second site. A difference between sites points toward a site-specific or third-party source rather than a global browser switch.
Before deleting passwords, check synchronization
Disabling a save prompt leaves existing credentials where they were. If you decide to remove them, first identify the store: the browser’s local password manager, an account-based sync service, iCloud Keychain, or another password application. Apple explains that iCloud Keychain can synchronize website login details among devices where it is enabled. Other browsers may also synchronize their password managers through signed-in accounts.

- Remove entries from the intended store, not just from an autofill checkbox.

If your requirement is simply “never ask me again,” do not delete data unnecessarily; turn off the save-prompt control where the browser provides one.

Privacy and convenience trade-offs
Turning off save prompts reduces interruptions and can help when a device is shared or governed by a policy that forbids browser storage. Keeping autofill enabled, however, means credentials already stored may still appear in fields. Turning off both prompt and autofill provides a stricter local experience but removes a convenience you may rely on for existing accounts. Deleting stored entries is the strongest cleanup step and has the greatest recovery cost if you later need those credentials.
No physical product is required to change any of these settings. A separate password manager is an optional software choice for people who want storage outside the browser, but it is not necessary to stop a browser’s own save question.
Quick browser checklist
- Chrome computer: More > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > Settings > Offer to save passwords and passkeys off.
- Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Passwords and autofill, then clear Ask to save passwords; use Exceptions > Block for selected sites.
- Edge: Settings > Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager, then turn off Ask to save passwords.
- Safari Mac: Safari > Settings > AutoFill, then clear User names and passwords; this is an AutoFill control, not a documented universal save-prompt switch.
- Safari iPhone: Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords, then turn off AutoFill Passwords; the cited Apple guidance covers AutoFill, not every possible save dialog.
- Any browser: search Settings for the exact toggle if a menu path has moved, and identify whether a remaining prompt comes from the browser, a website, or another password tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off the save prompt delete passwords I already saved?
No. The documented Chrome, Firefox, and Edge prompt toggles control future save offers. Safari’s AutoFill controls likewise do not establish deletion. Remove entries separately from the relevant password manager, and check synchronization first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I stop prompts on only one website?
Firefox documents this option. Leave Ask to save passwords enabled, open Exceptions in the Passwords section, enter the site address, and choose Block. The other browsers covered here do not have a documented site-level workflow in these instructions.
How do I keep autofill but stop Chrome asking to save passwords?
Turn off Chrome’s Offer to save passwords and passkeys switch in Google Password Manager Settings, but leave the separate password-use or autofill controls enabled.
Why does Safari still show a prompt after I turn off AutoFill?
Apple’s Mac and iPhone instructions document AutoFill controls, not a universal switch for every save or account-creation prompt. The remaining message may come from Safari, the website, or another password manager; identify its source before changing more settings.
What should I do if the menu path has moved?
Use the browser’s Settings search. Search Chrome for Offer to save passwords, Firefox or Edge for Ask to save passwords, and Apple devices for AutoFill or AutoFill Passwords.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy did a deleted password come back?
It may still exist in a synchronized browser account, iCloud Keychain, another device, or a separate password application. Identify the store and its sync setting before deleting the entry again.
Do I need to install a product to stop browser password prompts?
No. These settings are built into the browsers and Apple devices covered here. A separate password manager is optional if you want storage outside the browser.
The Bottom Line
For Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, disable the browser’s save-prompt toggle. For Safari, the documented Mac and iPhone controls are AutoFill settings, not confirmed universal save-prompt switches. Keep autofill or stored credentials only if you still want them, and treat deletion and synchronization as separate decisions.
