Windows Update turning back on is usually expected: Windows downloads and installs available updates automatically, and pausing them only delays that process temporarily. If the interruption you want to prevent is a restart, use Active hours or restart scheduling; those settings do not turn off updates.
What does “turns on” mean on your PC?
The phrase can describe different things: updates resuming after a pause, an update setting appearing enabled, a notification, or the PC restarting to finish an update. Those are not the same behavior. Windows is designed to install updates automatically; some updates need a restart to complete. On a metered connection, Windows defers downloads. Microsoft’s active-hours guidance explains this behavior for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
To narrow down what happened, check your Windows version, whether the device is managed by work or school, and the exact setting or event that changed. Without those details, it is not possible to identify a device-specific cause.
Why does Windows Update resume after a pause?
Pause updates is a delay, not a permanent off switch. Microsoft’s current guidance allows pausing for up to 35 days. When the pause ends, Windows checks for available updates and resumes downloading and installing them. See Microsoft’s instructions for pausing updates.

To set a temporary pause, open Settings > Windows Update and select Pause updates. Choose an available pause period. When it expires, updates resume; if you need another delay, check the Windows Update page for the available controls.
How can you reduce disruptive restarts?
If your main concern is the PC restarting while you are using it, adjust restart timing rather than trying to disable updates. Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the device and help avoid restarts during that period. They do not prevent update downloads or installation.

Set Active hours in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Choose the automatic option or set the hours manually to match your usual schedule.
Windows 10 has similar update controls, but the navigation can differ. Microsoft’s Active hours guidance covers both versions. You can also use the restart options shown on the Windows Update page when Windows offers a restart for an update.
Which setting should you use?
| Need | Control | What it changes | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delay update downloads and installation | Pause updates in Settings > Windows Update | Temporarily delays updates | Up to 35 days, according to Microsoft’s current pause guidance |
| Avoid restarts during your usual work hours | Active hours under Windows Update settings | Helps avoid inconvenient restart timing; does not stop updates | Recurring schedule, or automatic hours if selected |
What if this is a work or school PC?
An organization’s administrator can manage Windows Update through policies configured with Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM), including Microsoft Intune. As a result, the controls available locally may not determine when updates install. If Settings behaves differently from what you expect on a managed device, ask your organization’s IT administrator to check its policy. Microsoft documents the available controls in Windows Update client policies and its Group Policy configuration guidance.

Does “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” turn updates on?
Windows also has an optional setting for receiving certain latest updates as soon as they are available. It affects how promptly eligible updates are offered; it is not a permanent-off switch for Windows Update. Microsoft describes this option in its guidance on getting updates as soon as they’re available.
What Windows 10 users should know
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Check Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance for the lifecycle details; Windows 11 instructions and update behavior should not be assumed to apply identically.

Recent Windows 11 restart changes are version-specific
In a notice published August 14, 2026, Microsoft said updates released on and after July 28, 2026 are being combined toward one monthly restart for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. The rollout is gradual, and some security, emergency, and other updates may still install promptly. This does not promise one restart per month for every device. Details are in Microsoft’s restart-consolidation notice.

Should you disable the Windows Update service?
The supported consumer guidance here is to use Settings to pause updates temporarily or manage restart timing with Active hours. Those controls address the common reasons someone wants updates to stop or wait. A title alone does not establish that a service or registry change is needed, and such changes are not the general remedy described by Microsoft’s consumer guidance.
