There is no single Windows switch for everything described as “sync.” Windows preferences, local Activity history, OneDrive files and Microsoft Edge browsing history use separate controls. To stop the right data from roaming, identify which kind of information is appearing on another device, then change that service’s setting.
For Windows 11 preferences, go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup > Remember my preferences and turn off the master switch or individual categories. For local activity, use Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history. Files belong to OneDrive, and browser history belongs to Edge’s own sync page.
Identify what is actually syncing
Use the symptom—not the word “sync”—to choose a control. The following systems are independent, so disabling one does not disable the others.

| Recent apps, files or other actions shown by Windows Activity history | Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history | Stops local storage on that PC and can clear history already stored there. |
| Documents, Desktop, Pictures or other folders present on multiple PCs | OneDrive cloud icon > Settings > Account | Changes which cloud folders are downloaded to that computer, pauses the client, or disconnects the PC. |

A setting may also be offered in a Microsoft account privacy dashboard. That account-level option is conditional on region and account experience, so it will not appear for everyone.

Before changing anything: check the account and device
Most roaming behavior requires the same Microsoft account to be signed in on both computers. Check the account shown under Settings > Accounts on each device, and check which Edge profile and OneDrive account are active. A second device signed in with a different account may be showing a local copy, a work account’s data, or a shared folder rather than Windows preference sync.
Make a note of which computer you are changing. Windows Backup categories are account-related, while OneDrive’s Choose folders decision is local to a particular computer and account. Activity history is stored on each device, and Edge’s History switch belongs to the signed-in browser profile. This difference matters if you want to keep a work PC separate while continuing to sync a personal laptop.
If the computer is managed by an employer or school, policies can hide or lock settings. You may need the organization’s administrator to change them. Do not assume that an unavailable personal-account control is broken.
Turn off Windows 11 preference syncing
Windows Backup’s Remember my preferences controls settings that can follow you when you sign in with the same Microsoft account. Microsoft’s current explanation and category list are in Your Microsoft account, your data, your choices and the Windows Backup Settings Catalog. Labels can vary slightly with the Windows build.
- Open Start, select Settings, then open Accounts.
- Select Windows backup.
- Find Remember my preferences. Turn its master switch off to stop all listed preference categories from being backed up and restored.
- For a narrower change, expand the setting and turn off only the categories you do not want to roam.
Choose categories instead of disabling everything
The available categories can include:
- Accessibility, such as accessibility-related preferences.
- Accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passwords.
- Personalization, including appearance choices.
- Language preferences and dictionary.
- Other Windows settings.
The exact category set is not guaranteed to be identical on every current build. If you only want to keep a second PC from inheriting a theme or language dictionary, leave the master switch on and disable the relevant category rather than removing all preference backup.
Do not confuse Windows Backup with OneDrive backup
Microsoft explicitly treats Windows preferences separately from OneDrive files and photos. Turning off Remember my preferences will not stop documents or pictures from appearing through OneDrive. Use the OneDrive procedures below for those files.
Check the optional Microsoft account privacy control
Some personal accounts and regions expose another control labeled Sync your Microsoft account with Windows in the account privacy dashboard. If it is present, turning it off provides an account-level choice related to Windows synchronization. Availability depends on the country or region and the account experience, so its absence does not indicate a problem with Windows Backup.
This dashboard guidance is for personal Microsoft accounts. Microsoft says it does not apply to work or school accounts. Organizations can also apply policies that change which settings are available, so a managed PC may show fewer switches.
Stop Windows from storing Activity history
Activity history is a separate privacy feature from preference backup. It concerns activity recorded on the device, such as apps, files and other actions that Windows can use for activity views. In Windows 11, Microsoft documents the controls in Windows activity history and your privacy.
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Activity history.
- Turn off Store my activity history on this device to stop new local collection.
- If you want to remove what is already stored, select Clear activity history and confirm the prompt.
Turning off storage prevents new local records; clearing history handles records that were already kept. Treat these as separate actions if your goal is both prevention and cleanup.
What if you still see an option to send activity history to Microsoft?
Microsoft says the option to send Activity history to Microsoft was deprecated for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 by the January 23, 2024 update, KB5034204. Older installations may still display it. Install current Windows updates; if the option remains, turn it off as well. The label and availability can differ on an unupdated installation.

Local history is not the same as cloud account history
Turning off Store my activity history on this device addresses records kept locally by Windows. It does not erase every record that another application or online service may maintain. For example, Edge history is controlled in Edge, and files opened from OneDrive remain subject to OneDrive and the apps that use them. Clear each service’s history or data separately when that is your objective.
Understand the current Timeline status
Do not treat modern Windows as if it still synchronizes the old Timeline experience between PCs. Microsoft states that cross-device syncing of Microsoft Entra activity history stopped beginning in January 2024, following an earlier Microsoft-account change in 2021. Windows 11 no longer includes the Timeline experience. Microsoft’s support wording is: “The timeline user experience was retired in Windows 11, although it remains in Windows 10.” See Get Help With Timeline.
Windows 10 devices can still have the Timeline experience and local activity history. If you are troubleshooting a Windows 10 PC, expect different screens and behavior from the Windows 11 paths above; the retirement statement does not mean every local history record has disappeared.
Stop OneDrive folders from appearing on a particular PC
If the symptom is that files or folders show up on several computers, change OneDrive—not Windows Backup. Microsoft’s folder-selection instructions are in Choose which OneDrive folders you want to sync on Windows or macOS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area. If it is hidden, open the notification-area overflow first.
- Open OneDrive Settings.
- Choose the Account tab.
- Select Choose folders.
- Clear the check box for each folder you do not want downloaded to this computer, then confirm.
Folder selection is per computer and account. Clearing a folder removes its local availability on that PC; the folder and its contents remain available in OneDrive online and in the mobile app. It does not delete the cloud copy.
Pause OneDrive temporarily
Pausing is useful when you need a short interruption—for example, while using a metered connection or diagnosing a conflict. Microsoft documents pause choices of 2, 8 or 24 hours. Open the OneDrive cloud menu, choose the pause command, and select a duration. Sync resumes when the period ends unless you resume it sooner.
Quit OneDrive for the current session
Use the cloud icon menu and choose the option to quit or close OneDrive when you want the client to stop running until you launch it again. This is a session-level action, not a permanent account change; starting OneDrive later reconnects the client.
Unlink this PC from the account
Unlinking is appropriate when this computer should no longer be connected to that OneDrive account. In OneDrive settings, open Account and choose Unlink this PC, then confirm the prompts. The local client stops syncing with that account, while files already stored online remain in the cloud. Before unlinking, allow any uploads you need to keep to finish and verify them online.

Uninstalling removes the client from the computer rather than deleting your online data. Microsoft’s instructions in How to cancel or stop sync in OneDrive state that files and data stored online are not lost; you can still reach them by signing in to OneDrive.com. Uninstalling is therefore a broader device change than clearing one folder from Choose folders.
Do not delete files to stop syncing
Deleting a file inside a synchronized OneDrive folder can be a deletion of the cloud item, not merely a request to stop downloading it. Use Choose folders, pause, unlink or uninstall according to the outcome you want. Distinguish the local copy from the cloud copy before removing anything.
Verify OneDrive’s state after a change
Look at the cloud icon after changing a setting. A paused or disconnected client should show its corresponding status, while a selected folder should disappear from that computer’s local OneDrive view after processing completes. Sign in to OneDrive.com from a browser to confirm that the folder and files still exist online. This two-location check helps distinguish “not stored locally” from “deleted everywhere.”

Turn off browsing-history sync in Microsoft Edge
Edge browsing history has its own switch. Disabling Windows Backup does not disable Edge history synchronization. Microsoft’s account guidance is covered in Browsing history on the privacy dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the Settings and more menu (three dots), then choose Settings.
- Open Profiles, then select Sync.
- Turn off History.
Other Edge sync categories, such as favorites or passwords, are controlled on this same Sync page. Change only the categories you intend to stop. Legacy Edge behavior and the collection or display of history can also depend on account and diagnostic-data settings, so an older installation may not show exactly the same controls.
Check the correct Edge profile
Edge can contain more than one profile. Make sure you change the profile that is signed in on the devices where history appears. Turning off History in one profile does not change another profile or a separate work account. If a page still appears after the change, allow the browser to finish applying the setting and confirm that both devices use the same profile.
Choose the smallest effective change
Match the action to the data and the desired effect:
| If you want to… | Use this control | Scope and permanence |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Windows appearance or language choices from roaming | Windows Backup > Remember my preferences; disable the relevant category | Category-level preference change that remains until re-enabled. |
| Stop all listed Windows preference backup | Turn off the Remember my preferences master switch | Broad Windows preference setting; it does not affect OneDrive or Edge. |
| Prevent new local activity records | Activity history > Store my activity history on this device | Stops future local storage; existing records require Clear activity history. |
| Remove activity records already on the PC | Activity history > Clear activity history | Cleanup action; it does not by itself prevent new records. |
| Hide selected OneDrive folders on one computer | OneDrive > Account > Choose folders | Per-computer local availability; online copies remain. |
| Stop OneDrive briefly | Pause for 2, 8 or 24 hours | Temporary interruption that ends when the selected period expires. |
| Disconnect a computer from OneDrive | OneDrive > Account > Unlink this PC | Persistent client/account disconnect until configured again. |
| Stop Edge pages from appearing in history on another device | Edge > Settings > Profiles > Sync > History off | Edge-only history setting; Windows and OneDrive continue independently. |
Troubleshoot when a device still shows synchronized data
The setting is missing
First confirm that you are in Windows 11 and signed in with the account whose settings are roaming. Windows labels can change between builds. Install pending Windows updates, then revisit Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. A work or school account may be governed by organizational policy and may not expose every personal-account option.
You turned off preference sync but files still appear
Those files are likely OneDrive content. Check the OneDrive cloud icon and review Account > Choose folders. Do not expect Windows Backup’s preference switch to affect cloud-file synchronization.
You cleared Activity history but see recent entries again
Clearing removes stored history at that moment. Verify that Store my activity history on this device is also off; otherwise Windows can create new local records after the cleanup.
Edge history still appears elsewhere
Open the Edge profile that is signed in on both devices and confirm that History is off under Settings > Profiles > Sync. This profile-level browser setting is independent of Windows Backup and Activity history.
OneDrive files are not visible locally after changing folders
That is expected when a folder is unchecked: the local copy is no longer synchronized on that computer, while the folder remains in OneDrive online. Sign in to OneDrive.com to verify the cloud copy before making any deletion or unlinking decision.

A setting changed on one PC but not another
Confirm that both devices are online and using the same Microsoft account, Windows profile, OneDrive account and Edge profile as appropriate. A category change in Windows Backup does not retroactively reset a preference already customized on another PC, and an Edge change affects only browser history. Recheck each service rather than repeating the Windows Backup step.
You want to reverse the decision later
Return to the same control and turn the category or service back on. Pausing OneDrive ends automatically after the selected period; quitting it only lasts until the client is started again. Unlinking, uninstalling, and disabled sync categories remain in effect until you deliberately reconnect or enable them.

What these changes do—and do not do
Turning off a sync category prevents that service from applying future changes across devices; it does not automatically undo every setting already applied on another PC. Activity-history clearing is specifically the removal step for local records. OneDrive folder selection changes local availability, while unlinking disconnects the client and uninstalling removes the application. Edge’s History switch affects browser-history synchronization only.
For a complete privacy-focused change on a Windows 11 personal PC, handle the systems separately: disable the unwanted Windows Backup categories, turn off and clear local Activity history if required, set OneDrive folder availability or unlink the PC, and disable Edge History sync. Verify each service independently because no single Windows control covers all four.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Remember my preferences stop OneDrive files from syncing?
No. Windows Backup preferences and OneDrive files use separate controls. Use OneDrive’s cloud icon, Settings > Account > Choose folders, or unlink the PC if you need a broader disconnect.
Does clearing Activity history delete my Edge browsing history?
No. Activity history is a Windows feature. Edge browsing history has its own control at Settings > Profiles > Sync, where you can turn off History.
Can I stop only my Windows theme or language settings from roaming?
Yes. Keep Remember my preferences enabled, expand it, and disable the relevant category, such as Personalization or Language preferences and dictionary.
What is the difference between pausing and unlinking OneDrive?
Pausing stops synchronization temporarily for 2, 8 or 24 hours. Unlinking disconnects that PC from the OneDrive account until you configure it again; online files remain available.
Recommended Free Tools
Will unchecking a OneDrive folder delete it from the cloud?
No. Choose folders changes local availability on that computer. The folder and its contents remain in OneDrive online and in the mobile app.
Why can’t I find the “Sync your Microsoft account with Windows” option?
That account-level privacy control is available only for some personal accounts and regions. It does not apply to work or school accounts, and its absence does not prevent you from using Windows Backup settings.
Does Windows 11 still sync Timeline between computers?
No. Microsoft says the Timeline user experience was retired in Windows 11, and cross-device Microsoft Entra activity-history syncing stopped beginning in January 2024. Windows 10 can still show Timeline and local activity history.
The Bottom Line
Choose the control that matches the data: Windows Backup > Remember my preferences for Windows settings, Privacy & security > Activity history for local records, OneDrive settings for files, and Edge > Profiles > Sync for browsing history. These are independent switches, so check each service separately and verify that cloud files remain online before unlinking or removing anything.
