If Windows opens links in Microsoft Edge when you want another browser, fix the setting that owns the behavior. Links opened from most applications use Windows’ default-browser and link-type associations. Links clicked in Outlook or Teams can also follow a separate preference inside those apps. Test both situations first, then change the matching setting.
The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, with separate instructions for new Outlook, classic Outlook, and Teams.
First identify where Edge is being selected
Do not begin by changing several settings at once. The location where you click the link tells you which preference to inspect.
Run a two-part test
- Open a web link from a general Windows location or another application, not Outlook or Teams. Note which browser opens.
- Open a link in the application where you noticed the problem. Compare the result.
If both tests open Edge, start with Windows Default apps. If only Outlook or Teams opens Edge, the application’s own link preference is the more likely owner. Microsoft documents these as separate controls: an Outlook or Teams preference does not replace Windows’ default-browser setting. See Microsoft’s Outlook and Teams link guidance.

Use the scope of the failure as your diagnosis

Set your preferred browser as the Windows default
Use this route when Edge appears across multiple applications or when you want Windows to use one browser for ordinary web links. Microsoft’s current instructions are available on its Change default apps in Windows page.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- In the search box, type the name of the browser you want to use.
- Select that browser from the results.
- Set it as the default for the web associations shown on the browser’s page. Use the default option Windows presents for the browser, then verify the individual entries if Windows lists them separately.
Windows 11 also lets you assign a default by file type or link type. If ordinary links use your preferred browser but a particular kind still opens Edge, stay in Settings > Apps > Default apps and search for the affected extension or protocol. Select the entry and choose your preferred browser. This narrower association can override what you expected from the browser-level choice.
Windows 10
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Choose Apps, followed by Default apps.
- Under Web browser, select the browser currently displayed.
- Choose the browser you want Windows to use for web links.
The Windows 10 path is documented separately by Microsoft in its Microsoft Edge support instructions. After changing the setting, test a link from a general application before testing Outlook or Teams. That tells you whether the system-level change worked independently of an app-specific preference.

Fix a link type that still opens Edge
A browser can be selected as the Windows default while one file or link type remains assigned to Edge. This explains a common pattern: most links open correctly, but links launched through one particular kind of document or protocol do not.
Check the association in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the file extension or link type involved in the failure.
- Select the matching result.
- Choose your preferred browser and confirm the change.
Windows’ Default apps page supports searching by extension or protocol, so inspect the specific entry rather than repeatedly changing the browser-wide default. The exact entries displayed depend on the software installed on your PC.
Decide whether the association is really the problem
- If every ordinary web link opens Edge, return to the browser-level default setting.
- If only one link category opens Edge, compare that category with the entries listed under Default apps.
- If the link comes from Outlook or Teams, change the application preference as well; a Windows association change does not automatically remove an app-level choice.
Stop new Outlook for Windows from using Edge
New Outlook has a dedicated setting for hyperlinks. Use it when links clicked in the new Outlook app open Edge even though links from other applications use your preferred browser.

- Open new Outlook for Windows.
- Select Settings.
- Open General, then Files and links.
- Find Open hyperlinks from Outlook in.
- Select the browser you want Outlook to use.
This preference controls hyperlinks opened from Outlook. Microsoft states that the Outlook and Teams behavior is separate from the Windows default-browser setting, so keep the Windows setting configured as well if you want consistent behavior outside Outlook.

Confirm that you are in new Outlook rather than classic Outlook. The two versions expose different menus. Product updates can also move labels, so look for the settings group named Files and links and the option referring to opening Outlook hyperlinks. If the option is not available in the version you are using, apply the classic Outlook path below or use Windows Default apps for links outside Outlook.
Stop classic Outlook for Windows from using Edge
Classic Outlook places the browser choice in its advanced options rather than the new Outlook settings panel.
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select File, then Options.
- Choose Advanced.
- Scroll to File and browser preferences.
- Select your preferred browser for Outlook links and save the change.
Do not use the new Outlook path in classic Outlook; the menu structures are different. Microsoft’s documented paths for both versions appear in its Outlook and Teams support article.
Outlook and Teams can be linked
Microsoft states that changing the documented Outlook/Teams link-opening feature can affect web links from both the Windows Outlook and Teams apps. If you change Outlook and Teams appears to follow the same choice, verify the result in each app instead of assuming that Windows’ default browser was changed.

- Open the Teams desktop app.
- Open Settings.
- Select Files and links.
- Find Link open preferences.
- Select the browser you want Teams to use.
The setting applies to web links opened from the Windows Outlook and Teams apps according to Microsoft’s support documentation. It does not replace the browser selected under Windows Default apps, so configure both when you need the same browser throughout Windows and Microsoft 365 applications.
Check which Teams app you are using
Teams labels can vary as Microsoft updates the product. Look for a settings section concerned with files, links, or link-opening behavior. If you cannot find Link open preferences, first verify that you are using the Windows desktop app and then check Windows Default apps for the system-wide behavior. The available menu names can shift with product updates, but the setting’s purpose remains choosing the browser for links opened from Teams.
What to do when Edge still opens
When a change appears not to work, isolate the remaining scope instead of changing every browser setting again.

Open one link outside Outlook and Teams, one from Outlook, and one from Teams. Record which tests open Edge. A result that is limited to one application points to that application’s preference; a result that affects all three points back to Windows Default apps or a specific link association.
2. Recheck the exact Windows association
If only a particular link type fails, return to Settings > Apps > Default apps in Windows 11 and search for that type. A browser-level default and an individual association are separate entries. Change the specific entry that matches the link being opened.
3. Match the Outlook version
New Outlook uses Settings > General > Files and links. Classic Outlook uses File > Options > Advanced > File and browser preferences. Applying instructions for the wrong edition will take you to a menu that does not contain the expected control.

4. Check Teams independently
Teams can retain or apply its own link preference. Open Settings > Files and links > Link open preferences and verify the selected browser, even if Windows is already configured correctly.
5. Look for an application-specific control
Not every Windows component or third-party application is covered by one universal override. If the link originates in another app and the Windows default is correct, inspect that app’s settings for a browser or link-opening preference. The Microsoft guidance cited here documents Windows, Outlook, and Teams; it does not establish a single switch that overrides every other application.
6. Test after each change
Close and reopen the application you changed, then click a fresh link from the same source. Test the general Windows case separately from Outlook and Teams so you can tell which control responded. If labels differ from the paths above, use the current settings category and search for the equivalent browser or link-opening option.
Before changing settings, record the exact behavior
A short record prevents you from fixing the wrong control. Write down the Windows version, the app in which the link was clicked, and whether every web link or only one kind of link opens Edge. Also note whether the app is new Outlook, classic Outlook, or the Windows Teams desktop app. This matters because similarly named products expose different menus and can have different scopes.
Use one ordinary web link for the baseline test, then repeat it from the problem app. If the baseline opens your preferred browser but the problem app opens Edge, leave Windows alone until you check that app’s preference. If both open Edge, change Windows Default apps first. If only a particular category fails, search for that extension or protocol instead of resetting every browser association.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing only the Windows default: Outlook and Teams can have separate link choices, so a correct Windows setting does not prove that those apps will use the same browser.
- Using the wrong Outlook instructions: New Outlook’s setting is under General > Files and links; classic Outlook’s is under File > Options > Advanced > File and browser preferences.
- Resetting the browser repeatedly: If one link type still opens Edge, inspect its individual Windows association. A browser-wide change may not alter that narrower entry.
- Assuming a Teams change is system-wide: Teams’ Link open preferences controls links opened from the documented Windows Outlook and Teams apps, not every Windows application.
- Testing only one source: Always compare a general link with links from Outlook and Teams. Different results are evidence that different controls are involved.
- Following an old screenshot: Windows, Outlook, Teams, and Edge can move labels after updates. Use the current settings category and look for equivalent wording about default apps, files and links, or opening hyperlinks.

- These instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not use identical Default apps paths: Windows 11 centers on the browser’s Default apps page, while Windows 10 exposes the choice under Web browser.
- New Outlook and classic Outlook have different menus for the same practical task.
- Teams’ link preference is documented for web links opened from the Windows Outlook and Teams apps.
- Menu names can move as Windows, Outlook, Teams, or Edge are updated. Match the app edition and look for the setting’s current equivalent rather than relying on an old screenshot.
The practical rule
Windows controls the broad default, while Outlook and Teams can make a separate choice for links opened inside those apps. Set the preferred browser in Windows first, correct any individual link-type association that still points to Edge, and then set the matching Outlook or Teams preference when the problem is limited to one of those applications. This scope-based approach avoids changing settings that are unrelated to the link you are trying to open.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do links still open in Edge after I changed my default browser?
