The most reliable way to reduce Windows 11 Widgets activity is to hide the Widgets taskbar item: open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items, then switch Widgets off. This removes the visible taskbar entry, but it does not remove every way to open the Widgets board. Windows+W and supported touch gestures can still launch it. If you want to keep Widgets available, remove cards you do not use and adjust dashboard notifications instead.
Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed amount of RAM or network data saved by hiding Widgets. The effect depends on your Windows version, device, account, installed widget providers and configuration, so treat any improvement as device-specific rather than a fixed percentage.
Choose the right fix for your goal
“Stop Widgets using too much memory or network data” can mean several different things. Pick the outcome you actually want before changing settings:

Turn off the Windows 11 Widgets taskbar item
This is the clearest built-in control when you want Widgets out of normal sight and do not need the board during your workday.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. Alternatively, open Settings, choose Personalization, then choose Taskbar.
- Find the Taskbar items section.
- Set the Widgets switch to Off.
- Close Settings. The Widgets button should no longer appear on the taskbar.
The label and path above are the Windows 11 controls documented by Microsoft. This setting is a visibility and access convenience, not a promise that all Widgets-related processes, services or network requests immediately disappear. Microsoft does not attach a numerical RAM or bandwidth saving to the switch.
What turning the switch off does not do
Hiding the taskbar item does not make the board impossible to open. Microsoft says the Widgets board remains accessible through Windows+W and, on devices that support it, by swiping from the side of the screen. If you need to avoid the board entirely, make a habit of not using those shortcuts or gestures; Windows’ documented taskbar switch does not provide a second “disable every access route” option.

Keep Widgets but remove cards you never use
If you occasionally need weather, calendar or another card, a less disruptive approach is to keep the board and remove only unnecessary items. Fewer cards can mean fewer feeds and fewer widget-specific services to manage, although Microsoft does not quantify a guaranteed memory or data reduction for any particular card.
- Open the Widgets board from its remaining taskbar entry, with Windows+W, or with a supported touch gesture.
- Locate a card you do not need.
- Open that card’s More options menu (usually represented by three dots).
- Choose Remove widget and confirm if Windows asks you to.
- Repeat for each card you do not use.
Widget behavior can vary because dashboards may be powered by different apps or services. Removing a card therefore changes that card’s presence, but it is not evidence of a fixed system-wide saving. Keep cards whose information you genuinely use and remove those that only add headlines, scores or alerts you never open.
Reduce interruptions by managing dashboard notifications
Notifications are a separate control from the taskbar button. If your complaint is frequent alerts, pop-ups or prompts rather than a measured resource spike, open Widgets settings and adjust the dashboard notification options there. This lets you keep useful cards without receiving every available alert.
Use notification settings deliberately:
- Disable categories you do not want to see.
- Keep only alerts that provide a clear benefit, such as information you check regularly.
- After changing the setting, observe whether the unwanted prompts stop before changing additional Windows controls.
Notification controls affect what the dashboard presents to you. They should not be described as a guaranteed way to stop all background activity, because different widgets and services can behave differently.

Do not confuse Widgets with Windows 10 News and interests
Windows 11 uses the term Widgets and places its control under Taskbar items. Windows 10 uses a related feature called News and interests. Microsoft’s separate Stay Up to Date With News and Interests instructions include a Reduce taskbar updates option for that Windows 10 experience.
Reduce taskbar updates is unavailable in Windows 11. Do not look for that switch in Windows 11 and do not substitute it for the Widgets control. On Windows 11, use the Widgets switch, card removal and dashboard notification settings described above.
Why the general background-app switch is not a guaranteed Widgets fix
Windows includes background-app permissions for supported apps, but that setting is not a universal off switch for every desktop component. Microsoft explains in Windows background apps and your privacy: “Desktop apps won’t appear in your Choose which apps can run in the background list and are not affected by the Let apps run in the background setting.”
That distinction matters when troubleshooting Widgets. If Widgets or one of its supporting components is treated as a desktop app, it may not appear in the list you are changing. Turning off a general background-app permission can therefore fail to change Widgets behavior, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed remedy for memory or network use.
You can still review background-app permissions when you are investigating another supported app, but use the documented Widgets and Taskbar settings for this specific problem. Avoid repeatedly changing unrelated privacy switches without measuring whether the change affects the symptom you care about.
Cost, requirements and reversibility
These changes use Windows 11’s built-in settings and do not require a paid utility, replacement hardware, repair tool or subscription. You need access to the Windows Settings app and permission to change the taskbar for your account. The exact cards and notification choices may differ because Widgets can be supplied by different apps or services.
Turning the taskbar item off is reversible. Return to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items and switch Widgets back on whenever you want the button. Removing a card is also a dashboard customization rather than a Windows reset; you can manage the board again if you later decide that a card is useful.

How to check whether the change helped your PC
Because Microsoft publishes no universal Widgets RAM footprint or network-data estimate, the most honest way to judge the effect is to compare your own system before and after the change. This is an observation on your device, not a laboratory result that applies to every Windows 11 installation.

- Save your normal workload and close unusually heavy programs that would distort the comparison.
- Open Windows Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Note the current Memory usage and, where available, the relevant network activity columns while your normal apps are idle. Record the time and what you were doing.
- Use the Widgets switch under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items to turn Widgets off.
- Continue using the PC in a similar way for a comparable period. Do not open the board with Windows+W during this observation if your goal is to see the effect of leaving it closed.
- Check Task Manager again and compare the readings with the first observation.
For a useful comparison, keep conditions similar: the same network connection, open applications, display setup and workload. A single reading can change because Windows is updating, another application is syncing, or the network is busy. Look for a repeatable difference rather than treating one momentary number as proof.
What your comparison can and cannot prove
- It can show whether your configuration appears lighter when the board is hidden and unused.
- It cannot establish a universal saving for other PCs.
- It cannot prove that every Widgets-related component has been removed from memory or network activity.
- It should not be turned into a promised percentage, battery-life gain or bandwidth reduction unless you measured that exact result under controlled conditions.
Troubleshoot common results
The Widgets button is still visible
Return to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items and confirm that Widgets is set to Off. If you opened Taskbar settings by right-clicking, make sure you changed the Widgets switch rather than another taskbar item. Windows may also redraw the taskbar after a settings change; close and reopen Settings before checking the taskbar again.
The button is gone, but Windows+W still opens Widgets
This is expected. Hiding the taskbar item does not disable the keyboard shortcut. Avoid Windows+W if your objective is to keep the board closed. On a touch-capable device, avoid the supported edge-swipe gesture that opens the board. Microsoft documents these remaining access routes in its Widgets guidance.
Memory or network activity does not visibly change
Do not assume the setting failed. Microsoft gives no numerical saving guarantee, and the observed workload may be dominated by another app or service. Repeat the before-and-after observation under similar conditions. If the board was never open or was already using very little activity, hiding its taskbar entry may produce little visible difference.
You still receive unwanted alerts
Open Widgets settings and review dashboard notifications. Turning off the taskbar item addresses the button, while notification preferences address alerts. If you continue to open the board with Windows+W, you may still see content there even when the taskbar button is hidden.
You are following Windows 10 instructions
Check Settings > System > About to confirm which Windows edition you are using, then follow the matching Microsoft page. The Reduce taskbar updates control belongs to Windows 10 News and interests and is not available in Windows 11.

Privacy and network-data considerations
Widgets and dashboards can rely on different apps or services, so the information fetched, the refresh behavior and the available privacy controls can vary by widget. Removing an unwanted card is a practical way to stop seeing that card, but it does not establish that every related service has stopped communicating.
If network data is the main concern, first identify which condition you are trying to prevent:

Re-enable Widgets later
You can restore the taskbar entry whenever you need it. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items and switch Widgets back to On. Your choice is reversible; you do not need to reinstall Windows or reset the PC to show the button again.

Can I disable the Windows+W shortcut with the Widgets setting?
