If Windows 11 HDR switches off when you unplug a laptop, the most likely explanation is its battery setting: Windows may turn HDR off to conserve power. To keep it on, go to Settings > System > Display > HDR, select the HDR-capable display, and review the battery option. Leaving HDR on while unplugged can shorten battery life. If the change does not track a power transition, check the selected display, its HDR capability, display mode, external connections, and whether the problem affects streamed video rather than the main HDR switch.
First, identify what is actually turning off
Windows HDR, HDR video streaming, and Auto HDR are related but separate. Check whether the main HDR switch changes in Settings, whether only a particular video loses HDR, or whether the issue occurs only in a game using Auto HDR. Also note whether the change follows unplugging the laptop, connecting a monitor, waking from sleep, or installing a display-driver update. Timing helps narrow the checks but does not prove the cause.
Check laptop power settings
Microsoft documents a common laptop behavior: default power settings on HDR-capable laptops may turn HDR off when the PC switches to battery power, then turn it back on when the laptop is plugged in again. Microsoft Support explains this in HDR settings in Windows.

- Select the HDR-capable display you want to adjust.
- Open HDR settings and inspect the battery option. If Windows is set to turn HDR off when the PC is on battery, clear that option to keep HDR enabled while unplugged.
Setting names may distinguish HDR games and apps from HDR video streaming. Check the option relevant to the behavior you are seeing. Keeping HDR active on battery can use more power.

Verify the display and its HDR capability
With more than one screen connected, Windows may be showing settings for a different display than the one you are troubleshooting. In Settings > System > Display, select the intended monitor or laptop screen and inspect its HDR capabilities and settings. Microsoft’s guidance also recommends confirming that HDR is enabled in the monitor or TV’s own on-screen menu. See What is HDR in Windows? for Microsoft’s overview of HDR support.
If Windows does not offer HDR controls for the display, it may not be recognizing an HDR-capable configuration. For a laptop connected to an external HDR display, check whether the desktop is being duplicated. Microsoft notes that in the described setup, duplication can leave HDR unsupported; try Extend instead of Duplicate, then check the external display’s HDR settings again.

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
If only streamed video loses HDR
A video that plays without HDR does not by itself mean Windows’ main HDR switch has turned off. HDR video streaming depends on the display, the app, playback conditions, and power settings. Use Microsoft’s Stream HDR video on Windows guidance to check compatibility and settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm that the selected display supports HDR video streaming.
- Check that the app supports HDR playback.
- Review the battery options for HDR streaming and whether Battery saver is enabled.
- After changing a setting, restart playback or the app to test again.
Streaming HDR can consume more battery when the laptop is unplugged, so a power-saving setting may affect video playback even when the question is not about a game.

Troubleshoot an external monitor that loses HDR
If the issue begins when connecting or disconnecting an external display, or the monitor disappears intermittently, isolate the existing setup before changing hardware.
- Check Windows’ projection mode and confirm the external display is selected in Display settings.
- Reconnect the monitor and check its own HDR menu.
- Temporarily disconnect existing docks, dongles, adapters, and other accessories, then test the monitor directly if possible. This can help identify a connection conflict.
- If the problem began after a display-driver update, Microsoft says reverting to the previous driver may resolve update-related external-monitor problems. Follow the computer or graphics-device maker’s instructions for the specific driver.
Microsoft’s connection guidance is at Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows. These checks do not establish that a new cable, dock, or monitor is needed.

Do not confuse Auto HDR with the main HDR switch
Auto HDR is a Windows 11 gaming feature that expands the color range and brightness for supported older games. It is configured in HDR settings for a selected HDR-capable display, but it is separate from the primary Windows HDR switch. Changing Auto HDR is therefore not a general fix when system HDR itself turns off. Microsoft describes the feature in Use Auto HDR for better gaming in Windows.

| What you notice | Check first |
|---|---|
| HDR switches off as the laptop is unplugged | HDR battery option for the selected display. |
| HDR is unavailable on an external monitor | Selected display, monitor HDR setting, and whether the desktop is duplicated rather than extended. |
| The main HDR toggle stays on, but video is not HDR | Streaming compatibility, app support, playback settings, and battery-related options. |
| HDR disappears after connecting accessories or updating a driver | Projection mode, accessory isolation, and whether the issue began after a display-driver update. |
| Only supported older games are affected | Auto HDR settings for the selected HDR display. |
Microsoft’s support instructions document these behaviors and checks, but they do not identify the cause on every individual PC. The available guidance does not establish a general failure rate for Windows 11 HDR switching off.
