To stop WhatsApp Desktop from filling your Mac’s Downloads folder, turn off automatic media downloads: open WhatsApp, go to Settings (or your profile picture) → Chats → Media auto-download, then clear the categories you do not want downloaded, such as photos, audio, videos and documents. Incoming files will remain in the chat until you choose to download them.
Stop automatic downloads in WhatsApp Desktop
These steps apply to the WhatsApp app installed on your Mac.
- Open WhatsApp on your Mac.
- Open Settings. Depending on the app release, you can also click your profile picture to reach settings.
- Select Chats.
- Open Media auto-download.
- Deselect each media type that should not download automatically: Photos, Audio, Videos and/or Documents.
After you change these options, new media of the cleared types is not downloaded just because it arrived in a conversation. To save an individual item, use its download control when you actually need it.

Turning off auto-download controls whether WhatsApp fetches incoming media automatically; it does not provide a separate WhatsApp folder picker. WhatsApp’s help documentation states: “The folder where your files are saved is determined by your computer settings.” Therefore, a file you manually download can still be placed in the Mac’s configured Downloads location.

This distinction explains why disabling automatic downloads stops the constant flow of pictures and documents but does not change the destination for a file you deliberately save. If you need a different location for occasional files, move the item after downloading or change the download destination in the client that handles the download.

If you use WhatsApp in Safari rather than the Mac app, Safari controls where downloaded files are stored.

- Open Safari.
- Open Safari’s settings and locate the Save downloaded files to menu.
- Choose the folder where you want downloaded WhatsApp Web files saved.
This is a browser-wide setting, not a WhatsApp-only rule. Downloads from other sites in Safari will use the same destination until you change it again. Use this approach when you want to redirect downloads; use WhatsApp’s media auto-download setting when you want to prevent automatic downloads altogether.

macOS may ask whether WhatsApp can access files in Downloads, Desktop or Documents. Review that permission at System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files & Folders, then find WhatsApp and turn access to the relevant folders on or off.

This is an operating-system access control. It does not replace the Media auto-download preference inside WhatsApp. A permission change can prevent access to a folder, but it does not tell WhatsApp to use a different download location.
Troubleshooting when Downloads keeps filling up
Only some file types keep appearing
Return to Chats → Media auto-download and check every category. Clearing Photos does not also clear Videos, Audio or Documents; each category is controlled separately.

Older files are still in Downloads
The setting affects new automatic downloads. It does not remove files already saved. Review the Downloads folder in Finder and move or delete unwanted files manually, subject to your normal backup and retention needs.

WhatsApp Desktop settings do not control browser downloads. Change Safari’s Save downloaded files to destination instead, remembering that the change affects every Safari download.

A permission prompt keeps appearing
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files & Folders and review WhatsApp’s access to Downloads, Desktop and Documents. This addresses permission prompts; it does not enable or disable automatic media retrieval.

WhatsApp’s official desktop information lists support for macOS 11 or later, with installation available through the Apple App Store or WhatsApp’s desktop download page. Labels can move slightly between app releases, so look for the equivalent Chats and Media auto-download controls if your wording differs.
