If a website keeps talking after you switch tabs or leave it open in the background, change that site’s sound permission in Chrome for Android. Open the site, tap View site information beside the address bar, choose Permissions, and change Sound. This is the narrowest fix because it affects only the site causing the problem.
Chrome also has a global control at More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Sound. That changes the default for websites generally. Blocking sound is not the same as stopping video from playing: a page can continue running a muted video, so autoplay needs a separate control when your browser provides one.
What to change first
Use a site-specific permission when one website is unexpectedly making noise. Use Chrome’s default sound setting only when you want the same rule applied broadly. Google Chrome Help states, “By default, sites are allowed to play sounds.”

Decide whether you need mute or prevention
Before changing anything, identify the result you actually want. If a page is useful but its audio interrupts music, a meeting, or another task, blocking sound is the appropriate narrow fix. If the page should not start video or other media at all, you need an autoplay setting if the browser offers one. Muting a page and stopping its media are different jobs.
What you need
No separate app, subscription, accessory, or physical product is required. These controls are browser permissions. Headphones, speakers, cases, and sound-isolation products do not stop a website from initiating playback; they only change how you hear it. Configure the browser that is actually producing the sound.
Block sound from one website in Chrome for Android
This is the best first move when a particular news page, forum, game, or streaming site starts audio after you move away from it. It changes the permission for that website inside Chrome rather than changing the default for every site.
Step-by-step
- Open Chrome and load the website that is making sound.
- Tap View site information, the control immediately to the left of the address bar. Depending on the Chrome version, it may appear as a lock or another site-information icon.
- Tap Permissions.
- Find the sound permission and change it to the option that blocks sound. If Chrome offers a reset option in this area, you can use it to return the site to its default permissions later.
- Return to the page and test it. If the page was already playing audio, reload it or start a new page in that site so the changed permission is applied.
A site-level rule is intentionally narrow. It should not be described as a control for music, podcasts, games, or another browser that is producing audio. It governs that website within Chrome.
When a site has several addresses
Websites sometimes use separate addresses for their main page, an embedded player, or a login area. Apply the permission while the address that is actually producing the sound is open. If the noise returns on a different subdomain or embedded service, inspect that page’s site information as well rather than assuming one permission covers every address involved.
Restore sound for the site
Open the same site, tap View site information > Permissions, and change the sound setting back. The reset command in the site’s permission panel is useful when you no longer remember which individual permissions were changed.
Why this is usually the safest fix
Changing one site’s permission preserves the normal behavior of other sites. A site that you trust for music, lectures, or calls can continue to request sound under its own permission, while the page that caused the interruption remains blocked. It is also easier to diagnose: if the noise stops after this change, you have confirmed which site was responsible without changing a phone-wide audio setting.
Block sound by default in Chrome
Use the global setting when you want websites to be silent unless you deliberately allow them. This can prevent unexpected audio on many sites, but it is a wider change and may also silence sites whose sound you want.

- Open Chrome.

- Tap Site settings.

Afterward, sites that rely on browser audio may be silent until you allow sound for a particular site. If you need audio on a trusted site, use that site’s View site information > Permissions panel instead of undoing the global rule.

When the global rule makes sense
This broad option is useful if many unrelated sites are starting audio and you prefer a quiet-by-default browser. It is less suitable when only one page is troublesome, because the change may affect sites where you intentionally watch or listen. Record the original setting or be prepared to restore it if a familiar site stops making sound.
Which Chrome control not to use on Android
Google’s instructions for a media-control panel and tab controls describe computer Chrome. Do not look for the desktop Chrome top-right media button as though it were the documented Android route. On Android, use the site-information permission or the Android site-settings menu.

- Only one address makes noise: use the site-specific sound permission.
- Several sites make noise: consider Chrome’s default sound setting, understanding that it has wider side effects.
- No noise, but video keeps advancing: investigate autoplay instead of changing sound again.
- The sound continues after Chrome is closed or paused: identify the other app or browser that owns playback.
Sound blocking is not the same as stopping autoplay
A sound permission controls whether the site can make audible sound. It does not establish that the site’s video, animation, or other media will stop loading or playing. A page may continue playing video with the audio track muted, consuming data or battery while making no noise.
Signs that you have an autoplay problem
- The page remains active or the video timeline advances, but you hear nothing.
- Returning to the tab shows a video that has progressed while you were elsewhere.
- Changing the site’s sound permission removes the noise but does not stop motion, network use, or playback controls from changing.
For those symptoms, look for an autoplay setting in the browser you use. Chrome’s documented Android sound setting should not be presented as an autoplay switch.
Mute versus prevent playback
Choose sound blocking when you want a page available without audible interruptions. Choose an autoplay control, where available, when the goal is to prevent media from starting at all. These are separate outcomes, so verify which one matters before changing a global setting.
Why the distinction matters on mobile
Muting solves the immediate noise problem but may not solve unwanted background activity. A silent video can still leave the page active and may use network data or battery. Samsung developer material about managed autoplay policy is not the same as a confirmed consumer menu on every phone. For ordinary use, rely on the controls visible in your installed Samsung Internet app. If the reported menu is missing, do not substitute a Chrome path or assume that turning off autoplay will mute media that a page starts manually.

If the noise has stopped but the video still advances, the sound permission is doing what it controls. Continue with an autoplay setting if your browser supplies one; do not keep changing sound permissions expecting them to stop silent playback.
Recheck after an app update

What Android does not provide as a universal web-audio switch
The available documentation does not establish a universal Android device-level method that suppresses all web audio while preserving audio from other apps. Because of that, do not expect one phone-wide switch to replace the browser’s site permissions.
