You cannot switch off every LinkedIn message with one setting, but you can sharply reduce unsolicited contact by tightening invitation and message controls, turning off Premium Open Profile when appropriate, and reporting or blocking senders that persist. Treat unexpected job or side-hustle pitches as untrusted until you verify the person and company independently. Never send money, passwords, identity documents, bank details or account codes in response to an unsolicited LinkedIn message.
How LinkedIn’s controls fit together
LinkedIn separates invitations, message categories, Premium Open Profile messages, reporting and blocking. Each control affects a different audience, so changing one does not create a universal “no messages” mode.

Use the least restrictive control that solves the problem. Narrow invitations when the volume is the issue, disable relevant message categories when non-connections are contacting you, and use reporting plus blocking for scams, harassment or repeat attempts.
Reduce unwanted connection invitations
Desktop instructions
- Select Me at the top of LinkedIn.
- Open Settings & Privacy.
- Select Data privacy.
- Under Who can reach you, open Invitations to connect.
- Choose the narrowest option that still works for your networking needs.
LinkedIn provides three choices: Everyone on LinkedIn; Only people who know your email address or are in your Imported Contacts; and Only people in your Imported Contacts. The second and third options reduce cold invitations but also make it harder for legitimate contacts who have found you through an event, referral or public profile.

- Tap your profile photo.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data privacy.
- Tap Invitations to connect and select the desired audience.
Menu wording can vary slightly by app version, but the setting remains under Data privacy. If you cannot find it, use the settings search field for “invitations.”
What to do with an invitation you do not recognize
Use Ignore instead of accepting a request simply to stop seeing it. If you do not know the person, choose I don’t know this person when LinkedIn offers that choice. LinkedIn says this prevents that member from sending further invitations and provides feedback that may contribute to restrictions on the sender. Ignoring does not expose your profile to a new 1st-degree connection, while accepting would give that connection access to information you display to 1st-degree connections.
LinkedIn’s own guidance is explicit: “We strongly recommend that you only accept invitations to connect from people you know, because 1st-degree connections are given access to any information you’ve displayed on your profile.”

Desktop path
- Select Me and then Settings & Privacy.
- Open Data privacy.
- Select Messages.
- Review each message type and toggle off categories you do not want to receive.
Mobile path
- Tap your profile photo.
- Open Settings & Privacy.
- Select Data privacy, then Messages.
- Turn off the unwanted categories.
These switches govern the categories LinkedIn lists on your account, such as messages from people outside your network or particular invitation-related channels. They do not block every sender. In particular, LinkedIn states that messages from a 1st-degree connection cannot be stopped through this setting. If a current connection is the problem, block that member or address the issue directly if it is safe to do so.

After changing a toggle, test from a separate account only if you can do so without contacting a stranger. Otherwise, allow time for existing notifications to clear and watch whether new messages of that category stop. A setting change generally affects future delivery; it does not erase a conversation already in your inbox.
Disable Premium Open Profile when it attracts cold pitches
Premium members can allow people who are not connected to send a message for free through Open Profile. This is useful when you want inbound opportunities, but it also creates a direct route for mass recruiters, sales pitches and side-hustle solicitations.
- Open your profile.
- Choose the option to edit your profile introduction.
- Find the Open Profile control.
- Switch it off and save.
Turning Open Profile off does not block every non-connection from contacting you through every LinkedIn feature, nor does it affect messages from people with whom you are already connected. Combine it with the Data privacy message controls and tighter invitation settings for a broader reduction in unsolicited contact.

Report the conversation
- Open the conversation.
- Open More in the conversation controls.
- Select Report this conversation.
- Choose the reason that best describes the message and submit the report.
LinkedIn says a reported conversation is moved to spam and notifications for that thread stop. The service may also offer blocking during the report flow. Save any evidence you may need before deleting anything: screenshots, the sender’s profile URL, the original message, attached files and any external address they supplied.

Block the member
Blocking is appropriate when the sender keeps returning, impersonates someone, harasses you or is clearly attempting fraud. Once blocked, members no longer see each other’s profiles, updates or messages. Blocking is specific to that member; it does not prevent a different account from contacting you, so report a pattern of related accounts as well.
When to use both actions
For a scam or harassment, report first so LinkedIn receives the account and conversation context, then block the member. For a harmless but unwanted sales pitch, adjusting message settings or ignoring the invitation may be enough. Do not continue a conversation merely to gather proof if the sender is asking for money or sensitive information.
Recognize a fake job or side-hustle offer
A polished profile is not proof that an offer is genuine. LinkedIn says scammers may impersonate legitimate people or companies to steal money or identities. Consider the entire pattern rather than relying on one clue.
High-risk promises and requests
- Pay that is unusually high for little work, with no credible explanation of duties or hiring process.
- Requests to pay a fee, transfer money, cash or deposit a check, buy gift cards, wire funds or purchase equipment before starting.
- Early requests for your Social Security number, bank details, identity-document photos, passwords or one-time account codes.
- Urgent pressure to move immediately to WhatsApp, Telegram, text, an external form or a personal email address.
- A link asking for sensitive applicant information before you have independently confirmed the job.
Identity and message clues
- The message is generic, not addressed to you and unrelated to your experience.
- The sender uses a generic email domain instead of a verifiable company address.
- Grammar, job titles, compensation or company details do not match the organization’s public information.
- The profile appears to copy a real employee, uses a newly created or thin history, or cannot be confirmed through the company’s own channels.
- The sender claims to represent a company but cannot explain the role, reporting line, location, interview process or official application route.
One warning sign is enough to slow down. Several together justify ending contact, reporting the conversation and blocking the account.

LinkedIn’s off-platform warning
LinkedIn may display this notice in a conversation: “This sender appears to be trying to move the conversation off LinkedIn. We recommend you review these safety tips before proceeding. View message anyway.” Treat the warning as a reason to verify independently, not as an invitation to click through.
A safe screening process for every unsolicited lead
- Pause. Do not reply under pressure. Read the full message, inspect the profile and note exactly what the sender wants.
- Separate the opportunity from the identity. Find the company’s known website by typing the address yourself, not by using a link in the message. Check whether the role appears in the company’s official careers section and whether the named employee is listed through an independent company channel.
- Confirm the process. A legitimate employer should be able to describe duties, compensation structure, interview stages and a work email or portal that you reached independently. Be cautious if the only “application” is an urgent external form.
- Protect your accounts. Never provide passwords, Social Security numbers, bank details, identity documents or verification codes in an unsolicited exchange. Do not install software or buy equipment at the sender’s direction.
- Refuse financial transactions. Do not pay to unlock work, forward money, deposit a check and return part of it, buy gift cards or accept a request to use your bank account for someone else’s funds.
- End unsafe contact. Report the LinkedIn conversation, block the sender and preserve evidence. If money or identity information was involved, contact your financial institution promptly and report suspected job fraud to local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
Independent verification means using a phone number, email address or website that you located yourself. Do not use contact details supplied only by the person who sent the pitch, because an impersonator controls those details.

If you only replied
Stop responding, report the conversation and block the sender. Review what you disclosed and be alert for follow-up attempts that reference your earlier reply. A short reply does not prove your account is compromised, but it can signal that your address is active.

Change the password immediately from the service’s official site, sign out other sessions, enable multifactor authentication and review recovery email addresses and phone numbers. If the exposed password is reused elsewhere, change it there as well.

If you shared financial or identity information
Contact the relevant bank or card issuer using the number on its official statement or card. Ask what protective steps apply, monitor accounts and follow the identity-protection guidance available in your jurisdiction. Preserve the message, profile details, payment records and URLs for investigators.
If you installed software or gave remote access
Disconnect the affected device from the network, remove the software only after preserving evidence if needed, run a reputable security scan and change important passwords from a different, trusted device. Consider professional incident-response help when a work device or business account is involved.
Troubleshooting when unwanted messages continue
- You changed message settings but still receive a message: Check whether the sender is a 1st-degree connection; the message-category setting does not stop that relationship. Block the specific member.
- You still receive invitations: Confirm that the invitation audience is set to the intended option under Data privacy. Existing pending invitations do not disappear automatically; ignore them individually.
- The sender creates new accounts: Report each account and keep copies of the related messages. Blocking one account cannot stop a different account.
- You cannot find Open Profile: The control applies to Premium members and is edited from the profile-introduction editor. If you are not a Premium member, use invitation and message-category controls instead.
- Notifications remain visible: Reporting stops notifications for the reported thread, but it does not erase every historical alert already delivered by email or your device. Review LinkedIn and device notification settings separately.
A practical privacy baseline
- Set Invitations to connect to the narrowest audience compatible with your networking goals.
- Turn off message categories you do not use.
- Disable Open Profile if free messages from non-connections are attracting pitches.
- Accept invitations only from people you can identify or verify.
- Report and block scam, impersonation and harassment attempts instead of negotiating with them.
- Keep sensitive information off unsolicited chats, even when the profile appears to belong to a real company.
These settings reduce exposure without making your profile invisible. You can widen them temporarily for a job search or event, then restore the tighter baseline when the campaign ends.
The Bottom Line
There is no single LinkedIn switch that blocks every unwanted message. Tighten invitation and message-category settings, turn off Open Profile if needed, ignore unknown invitations, and report plus block suspicious senders. Treat every unsolicited side-hustle or job offer as unverified until you confirm the company independently, and never send money or sensitive credentials to obtain work.
