Use the control that matches how the person is getting in. For a WhatsApp call link, turn on Require approval to join and admit only people you recognize. For an unwanted one-to-one call, enable Silence unknown callers, then block or report repeat callers. For a group call, review group membership and invitation settings. Protect IP address in calls is separate: it hides your network address but does not decide who may join.
Which WhatsApp control solves your situation?
Unknown people reach WhatsApp calls through three different routes: a call link, a direct call from a number you do not know, or membership in a WhatsApp group. Each route has a different remedy. Choosing the wrong setting can leave the actual problem untouched—for example, IP protection cannot stop a stranger who has your call link, and silencing an unknown caller does not remove that person from a call already in progress.

The call-link waiting room can hold up to 128 people, while a WhatsApp group voice call supports up to 32 participants. Those are different limits and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Stop strangers joining a WhatsApp call link
A call link is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains it can try to join. WhatsApp’s call-link guidance warns, “Anyone with your call link can join your call, so only share it with people you trust.” A link forwarded to another chat, posted in a group, or exposed in a screenshot can therefore attract people you did not invite. The WhatsApp Help Center’s 2026 guidance makes approval the important distinction between possessing a link and actually entering the call.

Turn on approval before sharing or starting the call
- Open the WhatsApp call and open its participant list.
- Turn on Require approval to join. The label can appear in the call controls or participant settings, and wording may vary between Android, iPhone, Mac, Windows, and different WhatsApp releases.
- Share the link only through a channel intended for the people you expect to attend.
- When someone follows the link, wait for the approval request rather than admitting everyone automatically.
Only the call-link creator is notified of approval requests. If you created the link, you are the person who sees the waiting room and decides who enters; other participants cannot approve on your behalf. If a colleague distributes the link, that colleague—not necessarily the meeting organizer—may be the person who must handle every request. Confirm the creator role before the call begins so requests are not missed.
Check every waiting-room request
Use a name you can verify, not merely a familiar-looking profile photo. If the display name is ambiguous, deny the request and contact the person through a separate channel. Approval is preventive: the entrant remains outside the conversation until you allow access.
- Allow: admit a person whose identity and reason for joining are clear.
- Deny: refuse an unrecognized, unexpected, or suspicious request.
- Do not guess: if you cannot verify the person, leave the request pending or deny it and send a fresh invitation through a private channel.
The waiting room can contain up to 128 people. A busy public link may therefore generate many requests, and a creator should work through the list deliberately rather than approving a batch without checking names. Keep a current attendee list beside you, ask an expected participant to identify themselves through a known chat, or deny and resend the link privately when an identity cannot be confirmed. Only the creator can make the final admission decision.

If an unwanted participant is already in the call, open the participant list and use the available removal control. Removing ends that person’s current access but does not necessarily stop a return through the same link. If the account is identifiable, remove it and block it so it cannot continue messaging or calling your account. Use reporting when the behavior is spam, harassment, impersonation, or another policy concern.
Blocking is account-specific. If the person appears again from a different WhatsApp number, review and block that account as well. Reporting and blocking serve different purposes: blocking cuts off contact from the account you select, while reporting sends recent message and call metadata to WhatsApp for review. You can use both when both outcomes are needed.
After removing an intruder, check whether the link has spread. Stop sharing it and revoke or replace the link when that option is presented in your call controls. Anyone who still possesses the old link may otherwise try again. If you cannot determine where the link went, treat it as exposed and distribute a replacement only to verified attendees.
Know when a call link stops working
Unused call links expire after 30 days. WhatsApp may also revoke a link for privacy or security reasons. Expiration is not a substitute for approval: a link can remain usable for its validity period, and a person who has it can attempt to join unless you keep approval enabled. An active meeting should therefore be protected by approval and careful sharing, not by waiting for the 30-day period to pass.

Silence unknown people who call you directly
If the problem is a stranger dialing your WhatsApp account directly rather than joining a link, use the unknown-caller control. This setting is an alert filter, not an identity check and not a block.
Enable Silence unknown callers
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Privacy.
- Find the call privacy controls and enable Silence unknown callers.
- Leave the setting enabled unless you are expecting calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts.
A silenced call does not ring your phone. It still appears in the Calls tab and in notifications, so you can review it later and decide whether to respond. Silencing does not prevent the person from leaving a record of the call, sending messages, or trying again. It also does not remove a person who is already participating in a call. Use blocking when you want to stop contact from a particular account.
Block a repeat caller
- Open the caller’s chat or the entry in your call history.
- Choose Block and confirm.
- Delete the chat or call entry only after blocking if you want to remove it from your own view.
Blocking stops that person from sending you WhatsApp messages, calling you, or viewing your status updates. It applies to the blocked account, so a caller who switches to a different number can still reach you unless that new account is also blocked. Silencing remains useful for unknown numbers you may need to screen, while blocking is the stronger response to a known repeat offender.
Report spam or harassment
Use Report from the chat or call record when the contact is sending spam, making threats, impersonating someone, or repeatedly abusing the service. Reporting sends recent message and call metadata to WhatsApp for review. You can report and block together when both actions are appropriate. Keep any evidence you may need outside WhatsApp before deleting the conversation.
Secure WhatsApp group voice calls
WhatsApp group voice calls are restricted to members of the group. The documented maximum is 32 people. A person who is not in the group cannot join that group’s voice call merely by knowing that the call exists. The relevant question is therefore not who has a call link, but who currently belongs to the group.
Check who is in the group
- Open the group chat and tap or click the group name.
- Review the participant list for unfamiliar accounts, old numbers, or people who no longer need access.
- Remove an unwanted member using the group-management controls if you are an administrator.
- If you are not an administrator, ask an administrator to review membership or leave the group.
WhatsApp’s group-call instructions say a person cannot be removed during a group voice call. If an unwanted member is speaking or listening, leave or end the call first, then address that person’s group membership. Blocking the account can prevent direct contact with you, but it does not by itself remove the account from a group you share.
Restrict who can add you to groups
On a phone, open Settings > Privacy > Groups. Choose one of the available options:

- My Contacts: only people saved in your contacts can add you directly.
- My Contacts Except…: exclude selected contacts from direct additions.
These settings govern direct additions. They do not invalidate a group invite link that you choose to accept. Treat an unexpected invite as a separate decision: inspect the group name, members, and purpose before joining. A narrow group-add setting reduces unsolicited additions, but it cannot change the membership of groups you already joined or prevent someone from sending an invite link that you may accept.

Ask administrators to remove dormant accounts, use a clear group name, and limit invite-link circulation. If membership changes frequently, review the participant list before starting a sensitive call rather than relying on a previous call’s attendance. The 32-person call limit does not prevent every member from seeing the group chat, so protect the chat itself as well as the voice session.
Protect your IP address without confusing it with admission control
Protect IP address in calls addresses a network-privacy concern. Turn it on under Settings > Privacy > Advanced. WhatsApp relays calls through its servers so the other party does not directly receive your IP address.
This setting does not approve, deny, remove, silence, block, or report participants. A person who has a valid call link can still request entry, and a member of a group can still participate. Pair IP protection with the control for your entry route: approval for links, group-membership management for group calls, and blocking or silencing for direct callers. Think of it as hiding network information during a call, not as a gatekeeper for the call itself.
Match the response to the timing of the problem
Use preventive controls before a person reaches the conversation whenever possible. For a link, approval keeps the entrant in the waiting room. For a group, checking members before the call prevents a known unwanted account from being eligible. For a direct call, silence changes what happens on your phone when the call arrives, but it does not stop the account from contacting you. Blocking and reporting are follow-up actions after you can identify the account or conduct.

This timing also explains why combining settings works better than relying on one switch. A private link with approval protects admission; a revoked or replaced link limits future attempts; blocking handles a person who has already appeared; and IP protection addresses a separate network concern. None of these settings makes the others unnecessary.
What to do when the wrong person still appears
An unrecognized person appears in a call-link waiting room
- Do not approve the request.
- Capture the displayed name or account details if you need to document the incident.
- Deny the request and determine where the link was shared.
- Stop forwarding the link; revoke or replace it if it may have been copied.
- Create a new link with approval enabled and distribute it privately.
A stranger joins even though you expected a private call
Check whether you are using a call link rather than a direct one-to-one call. A link is not private merely because you sent it to one person. Anyone who receives a copy can attempt to join. Keep approval enabled and verify every request. If the person entered before approval was enabled, remove them, block or report the account as appropriate, and replace the exposed link.

The phone keeps ringing from unknown numbers
Confirm that Silence unknown callers is enabled under the current Settings > Privacy menu. Silencing affects calls from numbers WhatsApp treats as unknown; it does not mute a saved contact or a person who has already become a recognized contact. Block accounts that continue to contact you and report abusive behavior. Remember that silenced calls remain visible in the Calls tab and notifications, so review those records if you are checking for missed legitimate calls.
A person cannot be removed from a group call
This is expected behavior according to WhatsApp’s group-call guidance. End or leave the call, then remove the person from the group if you are an administrator. If you cannot change membership, ask an administrator to do it or leave the group yourself. Blocking alone does not change shared-group membership.
The privacy option is missing or named differently
Menu labels can differ across Android, iPhone, Mac, Windows, and WhatsApp releases. Update WhatsApp through your device’s normal app-update channel, then look in the current Privacy section for call, group, or advanced settings. Do not assume that a missing label means the protection is active; verify the setting’s displayed state. If the option still is not shown, use the controls that are available—such as blocking, reporting, or removing a group member—and check again after updating.

Approval decides who enters a call link, silencing controls the alert you receive, blocking cuts off a specific account, group settings determine who is eligible for a group call, and IP protection hides network information. Applying the control that matches the route is what stops unknown people rather than merely making them harder to notice.

Does Silence unknown callers block strangers?
