To reduce ads chosen from your YouTube viewing, turn off personalized ads in Google My Ad Center, then pause or delete YouTube watch and search history. Review privacy controls on the browser, phone, and any connected TV you use. These settings reduce interest-based targeting; they do not make YouTube ad-free.
YouTube says ads can be personalized from Google Ads settings, YouTube history, and account status, and that the videos you watch can influence ads even when you are not signed in. The controls below separate four different goals: seeing less relevant ads, stopping history from being used as a signal, limiting browser or device tracking, and removing YouTube ads altogether.
What “targeted ads based on videos” means
YouTube advertising can use more than the title of the video currently on screen. YouTube states that ads may be personalized from your Google Ads settings, YouTube history, and account status. Google also uses activity such as searches, sites visited, apps used, and location as possible advertising inputs when those settings permit it.

The result can appear on YouTube or elsewhere. Google gives the example that watching guitar-player videos on YouTube might lead to a guitar-lesson ad on another site that uses Google advertising products. This is why clearing only the ad shown in one YouTube video may not remove the underlying interest signal.

Personalized and non-personalized ads are different
When personalized ads are enabled, ad systems can select messages using permitted account, activity, and device signals. When you turn personalization off, ads still appear, but Google says they will most likely be less relevant to your interests. The setting is not an ad blocker and is not a promise that a topic will never appear again.
Ads can also be contextual. For example, an advertiser may choose content categories or a language without using your individual watch history. A non-personalized ad can therefore appear after you disable personalization, especially when it relates to the video, channel, region, or general audience.
Step 1: Turn off personalized ads in Google My Ad Center
This is the broadest account-level control in the sequence. It applies wherever you are signed in with the same Google Account, rather than only to one browser or one television.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Google My Ad Center from your Google Account menu.
- Find the control for Personalized ads. Account layouts can change, so look for the setting that says you can turn personalized ads off altogether.
- Switch the setting off and confirm the change if Google asks.
- Review the topics, brands, or activity controls shown in My Ad Center and remove any optional interests you do not want used for ad selection.
- Repeat the check for every Google Account used on the device. The setting follows the account that is signed in; it does not automatically change a separate family member’s account.
After this change, you should still expect advertising. The intended effect is less interest-based selection, not fewer ad slots. If an ad is based on the current video or a broad audience category, it can remain visible.
What this control does not cover
- It does not erase YouTube watch or search history.
- It does not clear cookies or other browser storage.
- It does not change a separate Google Account, a signed-out session, or every device setting.
- It does not block ads delivered by YouTube or by unrelated advertising systems.
Step 2: Pause and delete YouTube watch and search history
Google and YouTube identify search and watch history as information that can help show relevant ads. Removing or stopping that history reduces the amount of YouTube activity available for history-based personalization. It also changes YouTube features that depend on history, so decide whether you need recommendations and resume-watching records before making the change.
Pause future YouTube history
- Open Your Data in YouTube or open My Activity while signed in to the relevant Google Account.
- Choose the controls for YouTube History.
- Pause the setting that saves YouTube watch and search activity. If the page presents separate watch and search choices, review both.
- Confirm the pause. Check the account indicator before closing the page so you do not change the wrong profile.
With history paused, new activity should not be added to the paused history for that account. YouTube may provide weaker or less personalized recommendations, and videos you watched while history was paused may not be available in the normal resume-watching trail.

Delete existing watch and search history
- Return to Your Data in YouTube or My Activity.
- Open the YouTube history controls and choose the option to delete activity.
- Select the time range offered by the page, such as a recent period or all available activity, and review the scope before confirming.
- Delete watch history and search history separately if the interface treats them as separate records.
- Refresh YouTube on each device or sign out and back in if old recommendations remain visible while the account updates.
Deletion is different from merely clearing the list on one device. The account-level history controls are the relevant place when the same Google Account is used on phones, computers, and televisions.
Understand the side effects
- Recommendations: YouTube has less history to use when selecting suggested videos, so recommendations can become broader or less familiar.
- Resume watching: Removing watch records can remove the evidence that you started or completed a video.
- Search convenience: Previous YouTube searches may no longer appear as suggestions in the search box.
- Other Google activity: Deleting YouTube history does not automatically delete every search, site visit, app event, or location record in My Activity.
If your objective is only to remove one embarrassing or highly specific interest, delete that item rather than the entire history, where the available controls allow it. If your objective is to stop history being used going forward, pausing the relevant history is the more important step.
Step 3: Check browser privacy and cookies
The Google Account setting addresses account-based personalization, but a browser can also retain cookies and permit third-party tracking. The Federal Trade Commission explains that third-party tracking lets advertisers show ads based on interests and online activity. Browser controls therefore form a separate layer.
Clear existing browser data
- Open your browser’s Settings or Privacy page.
- Use the control for clearing browsing data, cookies, or site data. Choose the time period and data types deliberately.
- Clear data for YouTube and Google if you want to remove their local sign-in and preference records, but expect to be signed out of affected sites.
- Close and reopen the browser, then sign in only to the account you intend to use.
Clearing cookies can remove local identifiers, but it is not the same as deleting account activity. It can also reset language, playback, consent, and other site preferences. A browser’s private or incognito window does not make you invisible: the FTC cautions that private browsing alone does not stop websites from seeing online activity.
Review cookie and tracking permissions
- Block or limit third-party cookies where your browser offers that option.
- Review site permissions for YouTube and Google, including storage, pop-ups, and cross-site tracking controls.
- Use the browser’s global privacy or tracking-prevention setting if available, then check whether YouTube still works as expected.
Stricter blocking can interfere with sign-in, embedded videos, comments, or playback. If a feature stops working, allow only the minimum site access needed rather than disabling every privacy control.
Step 4: Review advertising settings on your phone
Phones have advertising and privacy controls that are separate from Google My Ad Center. The exact label depends on the operating system and version, but look in the system Privacy, Ads, or Tracking section.

- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Search Settings for ads, advertising, or tracking.
- Turn off the option that permits personalized or interest-based advertising, or reset the device advertising identifier if that option is provided.
- Review per-app tracking permission and deny it to apps that do not need tracking for their stated function.
- Check the YouTube app’s account and privacy settings after changing the system control.
A device-level change can limit advertising signals on that phone, but it does not erase activity already stored in a Google Account and does not automatically apply to another phone, tablet, computer, or TV.
Step 5: Check a smart TV or streaming device
Shared-room viewing often uses a television that remains signed in for months. Review the privacy, advertising, and data-sharing menus on the TV or streaming device itself, as well as the Google Account used in the YouTube app.
- Open the device’s Settings and look for Privacy, Advertising, Ads, or Device data.
- Disable personalized advertising or limit the device advertising identifier when the option exists.
- Open YouTube on the TV and verify which account is active.
- Sign out of a shared device when you finish, or use a separate account for visitors and children.
- Review the TV manufacturer’s data-sharing and voice-assistant settings if you want to limit additional device signals.
Menus differ substantially by manufacturer and region, so use the wording displayed on your device. A change on the TV does not replace the Google Account history and My Ad Center steps.

Step 6: Consider an ad or tracker blocker for browser viewing
A reputable ad blocker or tracker blocker can reduce advertising requests and third-party tracking when you watch YouTube in a supported desktop or mobile browser. This is primarily a browser-delivery control, not an account-wide YouTube setting.
Choose and configure one carefully
- Install an extension from your browser’s official extension store, and check its permissions before enabling it.
- Keep its filter lists and the browser updated.
- Use the extension’s per-site control if a page or video player breaks.
- Do not install multiple blockers that perform the same job; they can conflict and make troubleshooting harder.
The FTC cautions that blockers do not necessarily remove all ads or tracking. YouTube can change how advertising is delivered, and ads embedded in content or served through an application may not be handled like ordinary browser requests. A blocker also does not delete the watch history already attached to your account.
Use “Why this ad?” for one unwanted advertisement
If the problem is a particular ad rather than all interest-based advertising, open the ad’s menu and choose Why this ad? or the equivalent information control. The panel can explain why the ad was selected and may offer a way to block or report that specific ad.

This is a per-ad control. It does not turn off personalized ads globally, delete YouTube history, or prevent another advertiser from showing a similar message. Use it alongside the account and history controls when you want both an explanation and a broader reduction in targeting.

Why targeted ads can continue after you opt out
The setting was changed on a different account
Households often have several Google Accounts signed in on the same browser, phone, or TV. My Ad Center follows the account, so verify the profile shown at the top of the page and in the YouTube app.
The ad is contextual rather than personalized
Turning off personalization does not remove ordinary advertising. An advertiser can choose a video category, language, location, or broad audience without using your individual watch history.
Old cookies or device signals remain
Account controls, browser storage, phone advertising settings, and TV settings are separate layers. If you changed only one, another layer can still influence ads or measure a visit.
You are signed out
YouTube says the content of videos watched can influence ads whether you are signed in or not. Signing out therefore is not a guaranteed way to stop contextual or device-based ad selection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChanges have not appeared everywhere yet
Refresh the page, restart the app, or sign out and back in after changing settings. Test the account and device you actually use; a stale tab or a second profile can make an old ad pattern look unchanged.

A practical privacy-first sequence
For most people, the least disruptive order is to change account personalization first, then remove the history signals that are specifically causing concern, and only afterward tighten device controls.
- Turn off personalized ads in Google My Ad Center.
- Pause YouTube watch and search history if you do not want future viewing used as a history signal.
- Delete existing YouTube watch and search activity that you no longer want retained.
- Review browser cookies and third-party tracking controls on computers and mobile browsers.
- Change phone advertising and app-tracking settings on each mobile device.
- Change privacy and advertising settings on every shared TV or streaming device.
- Add a reputable browser blocker if you want fewer browser ad requests and can accept occasional compatibility work.
- Use “Why this ad?” for individual ads that remain especially intrusive.
After each stage, watch a few videos and note whether the result you wanted was less personalization, less tracking, or no visible ads. That distinction prevents you from deleting useful history when the real goal is only to remove advertising from playback.
When an ad-free result is the actual goal
Privacy controls reduce the information used to choose ads, but they do not generally remove YouTube ad placements. If you want YouTube itself to provide an ad-free viewing experience, YouTube says its paid memberships do so. Availability, terms, and coverage depend on the membership program and your region, so check the offer shown in your own YouTube account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A paid membership solves a different problem from My Ad Center: it addresses whether ads are shown during covered YouTube viewing, while My Ad Center and history controls address how advertising can be personalized. You may still want the privacy steps even if you pay for ad-free viewing, because they govern activity and tracking outside that membership’s coverage.
Troubleshooting checklist
- You still see ads about a recent video: confirm personalized ads are off for the active Google Account, pause or delete YouTube history, and remember that a contextual ad can remain.
- Recommendations became poor after deleting history: this is an expected side effect; restore only the history features you are comfortable using rather than assuming the ad setting failed.
- The TV still shows familiar topics: check the signed-in YouTube account and the TV’s own advertising menu. A TV setting alone does not remove account history.
- A blocker stopped playback: disable it for YouTube temporarily or use its per-site allow control, then test with one blocker and an updated browser.
- Ads changed on one device but not another: compare the account, browser profile, phone settings, and TV settings on each device; these controls do not automatically synchronize.
- Private browsing did not solve the problem: private windows mainly limit local records and do not prevent websites from observing activity, as the FTC explains.
- You want to know why one ad appeared: open the ad menu and select “Why this ad?” instead of deleting all history for a single explanation.
The key distinction to remember
There are three different outcomes: less personalized ads, less stored or shared activity, and no YouTube ads. Google My Ad Center targets the first. YouTube history, browser, phone, and TV controls address the second. A YouTube paid membership is the route YouTube identifies for the third. Choosing the control that matches your goal avoids unnecessary loss of recommendations and makes it clear why some advertising may still be visible.
