There is no single Facebook switch that hides every profile detail. To reduce what strangers can see, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility, then review profile details, friends, posts, stories, followers, profile-and-tagging controls, blocking, and the external-search setting one by one. Finish with View As to inspect the profile as a non-friend. Menu names and available controls can differ by account type, country, app version, and device; if the path differs, search Facebook settings for Audience and visibility or run Privacy Checkup. Facebook’s overview of these controls is at View and adjust your Facebook privacy settings.
Why strangers can still see something after you change one setting
Facebook treats visibility as a collection of audiences rather than a single profile-wide state. A phone number can have one audience, your friends section another, a tagged post the original poster’s audience, and a search-engine result a separate indexing problem. Hiding an item from your profile timeline does not necessarily change who can see the original post elsewhere on Facebook. Likewise, turning off Facebook’s search-engine linking option does not instantly remove pages already indexed or cached by a search engine.
Use the following distinction whenever you change a setting:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Who can see it? The audience may be Public, Friends, a narrower custom audience, or Only me.
- Where can it appear? It may be on your profile, in someone else’s post, in feeds or search inside Facebook, or in an external search result.
- Who controls it? You control your own profile fields and many of your posts, but another person controls the audience of a post they created.
Because these controls are independent, work through the audit below instead of relying on a single privacy toggle.

Open the complete Audience and visibility settings
- Open Facebook and select your profile picture or account menu.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Audience and visibility.
- Review each category shown: profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking.
- If a category or label is missing, use Facebook’s Privacy Checkup and look for the closest equivalent. Facebook says settings can vary by profile type, and app and desktop labels can move.
Do this review while logged in to the account whose profile you want to protect. A page, professional mode profile, or other profile type may expose different controls from a standard personal profile.
Set each profile detail to the audience you actually want
Open your profile and select About, then inspect sections such as Contact and Basic Info. Facebook places an audience selector next to individual fields. Open the selector beside every phone number, email address, birthday or year, hometown, current city, relationship detail, workplace, education entry, and other field you have completed.
Choose Friends when people you have accepted should see the field, or Only me when you do not need it displayed on your profile. Use a narrower custom audience when that option is offered and you have a specific group in mind. Do not assume that selecting one audience updates every field: Facebook says profile details are controlled individually, and some fields may offer different choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Audience choice | What it generally does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone on or off Facebook may see the item, subject to the item’s location and Facebook’s handling of it. | Only for information you deliberately want to publish broadly. |
| Friends | Limits the item to people connected to you as Facebook friends. | Routine social details that do not need to be public. |
| Custom or narrower audience | Lets you include or exclude selected people or lists when Facebook presents that control. | A detail intended for a defined subset of friends. |
| Only me | Removes the field from other people’s normal profile view while retaining it for your account where Facebook supports the option. | Private contact or biographical information. |
After saving a field, return to the next field rather than assuming the same audience was inherited. Also check whether a detail appears in a separate profile section, a post, or a public page you manage; changing the About field does not change copies you have shared elsewhere.
Understand the profile-picture and cover-photo exception
Facebook’s Help Center states: “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” That rule applies even when other profile details are limited. The official explanation is Who can see your Facebook profile picture and cover photo.
You can still choose a less revealing image, remove identifying background details, or avoid using a personal photograph. Past profile pictures and past cover photos may have their own audience settings, so open those older items and adjust them individually if Facebook offers an audience selector. Changing an older image’s audience does not make the current profile picture or current cover photo private. Facebook’s English Help Centre page is also available at this localized version.

Hide the full Friends section, while accounting for mutual friends
Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. To change it, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility → How people find and contact you, then locate Who can see your friends list? Select Only me if you do not want strangers viewing the full list from your profile. Facebook’s instructions are at Adjust who can see your Friends section on Facebook.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis setting limits the list on your own profile; it cannot force other people to hide their lists. Someone else’s public friends list, a mutual-friend display, or a connection visible on another person’s profile may still reveal that you know one another. Therefore, treat Only me as a way to remove your directory, not as a guarantee that every friendship can no longer be inferred.
Control future posts and clean up older posts
Choose the audience before you publish
In Audience and visibility → Posts, set the default audience for future posts to the narrowest option that suits your use, usually Friends or a custom audience rather than Public. When composing an individual post, check the audience selector beside your name before selecting Post; an individual post can override the default.
Review posts already on your profile
Open your profile’s Activity Log and use Manage Activity where available. Filter or select older posts, then change their audience, archive them, or delete them according to the choices Facebook presents. Facebook’s guidance for managing profile posts is at Share and Manage Posts on Your Profile.
Work from the original post whenever possible. Removing an item from your timeline or hiding it from your profile changes the profile presentation, but the post may remain visible in another location to the audience that already had access. If a friend created the post, only that friend may be able to change its audience or remove it.
Review stories, followers and other public-content controls
The Audience and visibility page also includes controls for stories, followers and public content. Open each category rather than assuming your post setting covers them. A story can have its own audience choice, and follower or public-content settings can determine how people who are not your Facebook friends encounter material you publish. Use the narrowest audience Facebook offers that still works for your purpose, and check the selector when creating an individual story or public update.

These controls are separate from the Friends section and from profile fields. For example, changing who can see your friends list does not change the audience of a public story, and setting a phone number to Only me does not alter an old public post containing that number. Include stories and follower settings in the same periodic audit, especially after changing account type or enabling professional features, because available labels can differ.
Prevent tagged posts from unexpectedly expanding an audience
Open Audience and visibility → Profile and tagging. Review at least these controls:
- Who can see posts you are tagged in on your profile?
- Who can add to the audience of posts they create that include you?
- Whether posts you are tagged in must be reviewed before they appear on your profile.
- Whether tags added to your own posts require review.
Set review options on when you want to approve an item before it appears on your profile. Use the narrowest audience available for tagged posts if Facebook offers that selector. These choices affect your profile and the audience expansion Facebook permits, but they do not rewrite the original poster’s audience.
For example, a friend can publish a post to Friends and tag you. The post’s original audience remains important, and hiding the item from your timeline does not necessarily remove it from the friend’s post, feeds, search, or other Facebook locations where that audience can see it. Facebook explains this distinction in Choose who can see a post that you’re tagged in on Facebook. If a tagged item is sensitive, ask the original poster to change its audience or remove the tag and post.
Use View As to test the public result
View As is an inspection tool, not a privacy setting. From your profile, open the profile options menu and choose View As (the label may be under a three-dot menu). Facebook then shows the profile as someone who is not your friend.
- Inspect the profile header, About details, Friends section, featured items, photos, and visible posts.
- Open any item that surprises you and identify its original location and current audience.
- Return to the relevant setting or original post and change the audience there.
- Run View As again after saving changes.
View As may not reproduce every logged-out search-engine result or every audience variation. Use it to find obvious exposure on your profile, then verify the item at its source. Facebook’s Help Center describes the public-profile view and the hidden-timeline limitation at Comment voir la vue publique de votre profil Facebook.

Reduce links from external search engines
In How people find and contact you, look for the setting that controls whether search engines outside Facebook can link to your profile. Turn it off if you do not want Facebook to offer that profile link to external search engines.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This setting is not a deletion request. A search engine may already have indexed or cached your name and profile URL. Facebook says you may need to contact the search engine for removal while its index refreshes. Existing public content posted by other people can also remain discoverable independently of the profile-link setting. Facebook’s troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshoot Privacy Issues.
Use blocking for one specific person, not as a complete privacy plan
If the concern is a particular account, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Blocking and add that person, or use the blocking control from their profile. Blocking is useful for stopping direct interaction and limiting what that account can access through your profile, but Facebook lists exceptions and other contexts where content can still be encountered. It is therefore a targeted interaction control, not a replacement for setting audiences on your details, posts, friends list, photos, and tags.
If the person can use another account, or the information was posted by someone else, continue the audience and tagging audit. For harassment, threats, impersonation, or exposure of sensitive information, use Facebook’s reporting tools in addition to blocking and preserve relevant links or screenshots.
Choose settings by the result you want
| Goal | Controls to review | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hide contact information from strangers | Individual selectors in About, Contact and Basic Info | Each field is separate; a copy shared in a post has its own audience. |
| Stop strangers browsing your network | Who can see your friends list? → Only me | Mutual friends and other users’ public settings can still expose connections. |
| Keep future updates among friends | Default post audience plus the selector on each new post | An individual post can override the default. |
| Keep tagged material off your profile | Profile and tagging review and audience controls | Hiding from your timeline does not necessarily change the original post’s audience. |
| Reduce public profile discovery | External-search linking option and View As | Search indexes and caches may persist after the setting changes. |
| Limit one person’s access | Blocking, combined with audience review | Blocking has exceptions and cannot control every copy or context. |
Final privacy audit checklist
- Open Audience and visibility and review every category instead of changing only one setting.
- Inspect every About, Contact and Basic Info field and select Friends, a custom audience, or Only me deliberately.
- Assume the current profile picture and cover photo are public; choose images accordingly.
- Set the Friends section to Only me if you do not want the full list displayed on your profile.
- Set a future-post default, then check the selector on every individual post.
- Use Activity Log or Manage Activity to review older posts.
- Turn on tagged-post review and check who can add people to the audience of a post that includes you.
- Review stories, followers and public-content settings separately.
- Run View As and investigate every item that appears unexpectedly.
- Turn off the external-search linking option if appropriate, then allow for search-engine refresh or submit a removal request to the relevant search engine.
- Block a specific person when necessary, but do not treat blocking as a substitute for audience controls.
These steps can substantially reduce what strangers see, but no Facebook setting guarantees complete invisibility. Public material, another person’s audience choices, mutual-friend displays, and search-engine copies remain separate sources of exposure. Recheck the controls periodically because Facebook can change labels, available options, and regional behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make my entire Facebook profile private with one switch?
No. Facebook separates audiences for profile fields, posts, stories, friends, tagged content, followers and public material. Review each category under Audience and visibility, then use View As to check the result.

Why can someone still see a friendship after I set my friends list to Only me?
Only me hides the full Friends section on your profile. It cannot change another person’s public friends list or remove mutual-friend displays, so a connection may still be inferred elsewhere.
Does hiding a tagged post from my timeline remove it from Facebook?
No. Hiding it changes your profile presentation, but the original post can remain visible to the audience selected by the person who created it. Ask that person to change the audience, remove the post, or remove your tag when appropriate.
Are my current profile photo and cover photo private if my other details are limited?
No. Facebook says the current profile picture and cover photo are public and can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook. Older profile and cover photos may have separate audience controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does my name or profile still appear in Google after I disable search-engine linking?
The setting controls whether Facebook offers a profile link to external search engines; it does not instantly erase an indexed or cached result. Contact the search engine for removal while its index refreshes.
Should I block someone instead of changing all my privacy settings?
Blocking is useful for a specific account, but it is not a complete privacy plan. Other accounts, mutual contexts and content posted by other people can create separate exposure, so continue reviewing audiences, tags, friends and public content.
The Bottom Line
To stop strangers from seeing more than you intend, audit Facebook’s controls individually: set profile fields and posts to Friends, a custom audience or Only me; remember that current profile and cover photos are public; restrict the Friends section; review stories, followers and tags; limit external-search links; and verify everything with View As. These steps reduce exposure but cannot erase public material controlled by other people or search engines.
