Use Steam’s Ignore control on an unwanted game’s store page, recommendation card, or Discovery Queue entry. Valve says an ignored product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. For recurring genres or themes, add tag exclusions and adjust Discovery Queue preferences. Do not use Library Hide or the Private setting for this purpose: Hide organizes your own library, while Private controls what other people can see about your ownership and activity.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Steam has several features that can make a game less visible, but they operate on different surfaces. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason an unwanted title continues to appear in recommendations.
| Control | What it targets | Scope | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ignore | Store recommendations, recommendation cards, Discovery Queue products | Usually one specific product | It does not hide every game with a similar tag or remove an owned game from your Library. |
| Tag exclusions and Discovery Queue preferences | Recurring genres, themes, or categories in supported discovery areas | A category or group of products | They are not a guarantee that every manually curated storefront panel uses the same filters. |
| Hide in Library | Your own Steam client Library | An owned game in your personal collection | Steam’s support documentation does not identify Library hiding as the Ignore action for store recommendations. |
| Private | Other users’ view of your ownership and activity in specified places | A game or related activity shown to other people | It is a privacy setting, not a recommendation filter. |
If the immediate problem is one title, start with Ignore. If the problem is a pattern—such as a genre, subject, or tag—use exclusions as well. Use Hide only when the goal is to tidy your Library, and use Private only when the goal is to limit what other Steam users can see.

Ignore a title from its store page
- Open the game’s Steam store page.
- Locate the product controls associated with following, wishlisting, or ignoring the title.
- Select Ignore.
- Confirm that the product is marked as ignored before leaving the page.
Valve’s Steam Discovery documentation says that a product can be marked ignored so it is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. The wording and placement of the control can change as Steam’s storefront is redesigned, but the action is still the one intended for an individual product you do not want suggested.

Ignore a title while it is being recommended
- When an unwanted game appears in a recommendation card or your Discovery Queue, open the card’s available actions.
- Choose Ignore rather than dismissing the card or hiding it in your Library.
- Continue through the queue only after the title has been marked ignored.
Valve specifically describes Ignore as available for products in the Discovery Queue. The Recommendation Feed instructions likewise direct users to click Ignore on an unwanted title. This makes the control useful at the moment a recommendation appears; you do not have to open the full store page first.
What Ignore changes—and what it cannot promise
Valve’s documented behavior is that the ignored product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. That is a product-level preference, not a universal switch for every piece of content Steam can display. Steam has multiple discovery mechanisms, and storefront panels can use different curation or filtering rules.
Accordingly, treat Ignore as the correct way to reduce suggestions for that particular game in the recommendation areas covered by Steam’s documentation. It should not be described as a guarantee that the title will disappear from every search result, community page, advertisement, publisher collection, or manually curated list.

Reduce recommendations for a whole genre or theme
Use tag exclusions
If many unwanted games share a genre, feature, or subject, excluding individual titles one by one is inefficient. Steam’s Discovery Update documentation describes tag-based exclusions as a way to filter discovery. Open the Discovery Queue or its preference controls, review the tags associated with the kinds of games you do not want, and add the relevant tags to your exclusions.

- Open Steam’s Discovery Queue preferences or the equivalent discovery-filter settings shown in your current client.
- Review the available tags and identify the ones that describe the recurring recommendations you want to reduce.
- Add those tags to the exclusion list.
- Save or apply the preference, then review a later queue or recommendation feed to check the result.
Use the narrowest tags that describe the problem. Excluding a broad tag can remove games you might otherwise enjoy, while excluding a more specific tag limits the side effects. Steam’s documentation presents these as discovery controls; it does not establish that every storefront panel, editorial collection, or manually curated list applies them identically.
Adjust Discovery Queue preferences
The Discovery Queue has its own preferences in addition to product-level Ignore controls. Use those settings when you want to shape the type of products that appear in the queue rather than reject one known title.
- Use Ignore for a specific game already identified as unwanted.
- Use tag exclusions for a recurring category or theme.
- Use the queue’s other available preferences to narrow the discovery experience where Steam exposes those options.
Steam’s interface labels and the exact location of these settings can change. If a control is not visible in the same place described by older instructions, look for the current Discovery Queue preference or filtering controls instead of assuming that Library hiding will have the same effect.
Why hiding a game in your Library is different
Library hiding is an organizational feature for games you own. Steam Support describes it as preventing a game from appearing to you in the client’s Library view. That can make a large collection easier to manage, but it is not the documented action for excluding a product from store recommendations.

Use Library Hide when your objective is one of these:
- Keep a game out of your normal Library browsing view.
- Reduce visual clutter from titles you do not plan to play.
- Separate a game from the rest of your owned collection without deleting it.
Do not use Hide as a substitute for Ignore when an unwanted title is appearing in the Steam Store or Discovery Queue. If a game is already hidden and you need to manage it, Steam’s missing-games support guidance explains how to view hidden titles and remove the hidden status. The availability and placement of those Library controls can differ between the desktop client and later interface revisions.
Why Private does not change your recommendations
Steam’s Private setting addresses visibility to other users. It can hide ownership and activity in the places where Steam offers that privacy choice. For example, it can prevent other people from seeing that you own or have played a particular game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Private is not a documented recommendation preference. Marking a game private therefore should not be expected to stop Steam from suggesting that game, similar games, or products associated with the same tags. Choose Private when the concern is social visibility; choose Ignore or discovery filters when the concern is what Steam recommends to you.

Understand the limits of Steam’s recommendation systems
Steam does not rely on one single list. Valve describes the Interactive Recommender as an additional system that uses play patterns. Other storefront areas can use product metadata, queue rules, editorial selection, or activity signals. Because these mechanisms differ, a control that affects one discovery surface may not remove a title from every other surface.
Valve also notes that the Interactive Recommender cannot recommend new releases that nobody has played yet. That limitation matters when interpreting a recommendation: a newly released title may enter another storefront area before the play-pattern system has enough activity to include or exclude it. Ignore the title when it appears, and use tag or queue preferences for broader filtering where those controls apply.
The practical expectation is reduction, not a promise that every Steam surface will be cleared. Search, direct links, community activity, publisher pages, and other manually selected displays can remain separate from recommendation filtering.
A practical cleanup workflow
When one specific game keeps appearing
- Use Ignore directly on the recommendation card or the game’s store page.
- Check that you selected Ignore, not Library Hide or Private.
- Return to the relevant recommendation area later and see whether the product has stopped appearing there.
- If the same title appears in a different storefront context, treat that as a separate surface rather than repeatedly changing Library or privacy settings.
When dozens of similar games are appearing
- Identify the common tags or themes instead of ignoring every product individually.
- Add the narrowest matching tags to the Discovery Queue’s exclusions.
- Review the queue’s other preference controls and apply the settings that match your interests.
- Ignore exceptional titles individually when a broad tag would also remove games you want to see.
When the problem is your owned-game list
- Use Library Hide for titles you want out of your own client Library view.
- Use Steam’s hidden-games management controls if you later need to view or unhide one.
- Use Ignore separately if the same product is also appearing as a store recommendation.
When the problem is other people seeing your activity
- Open the game’s privacy controls.
- Set the title or related activity to Private where Steam offers that option.
- Do not expect the privacy change to alter your recommendation feed.
Troubleshoot recommendations that continue to appear
Check that the correct action was used
A hidden Library title and a private game can still be recommended because neither action is the documented product-level recommendation filter. Reopen the store page or recommendation controls and look for the title’s Ignore state.

Identify the surface showing the game
Note whether the title is appearing in the Discovery Queue, a recommendation feed, a featured storefront area, a search result, a publisher collection, or a community page. Valve’s statements about Ignore apply to future recommendations and featured spots, while other surfaces can have different rules.
Review tag exclusions for unintended breadth
If unwanted categories remain, confirm that the relevant tags are actually excluded in the current Discovery Queue preferences. If recommendations you like have disappeared as well, narrow the exclusions rather than adding more broad tags.
Allow for interface and coverage changes
Valve’s Discovery Update pages describe the feature behavior, but those pages originate from earlier storefront updates. Exact labels, menu placement, and the coverage of individual storefront surfaces can change. Follow the current client’s wording when it differs from older screenshots or instructions, and avoid assuming that one filter controls every panel.
Best practices for keeping recommendations useful
- Ignore at the point of discovery. Applying the control when a title first appears prevents it from being forgotten and repeatedly dismissed.
- Prefer narrow exclusions. A specific tag is less likely to suppress unrelated games than a broad genre label.
- Separate personal organization from discovery. Hide games to manage your Library; do not expect it to retrain store recommendations.
- Separate privacy from personalization. Private protects ownership and activity visibility; it is not a signal that Steam should stop recommending a product.
- Evaluate by surface. A successful change in the Discovery Queue does not prove that search, community pages, or every curated storefront panel uses the same rule.
Frequently misunderstood cases
An owned game appears in recommendations
Ownership does not make Library Hide the correct response. If you do not want the store to suggest the game, use Ignore. If you also want it out of your Library view, Hide is an independent organizational choice.
A private game still appears to you
That is consistent with the purpose of Private. The setting limits what other users can see; it does not tell Steam to remove the game from your own discovery experience.
A game with an excluded tag appears elsewhere
Tag exclusions are documented as discovery controls, not a universal block for every Steam surface. Check whether the appearance came from the Discovery Queue or another area with separate curation rules, then use Ignore if the individual product is one you never want recommended.
Bottom line
For a single unwanted game, choose Ignore on its store page or recommendation card. For repeated categories, combine tag exclusions with Discovery Queue preferences. Reserve Library Hide for organizing your own collection and Private for limiting other users’ visibility; neither is the documented replacement for recommendation filtering.
