SSH asks for the passphrase repeatedly when it cannot find an unlocked copy of your private key in a running authentication agent. Load the key into ssh-agent with ssh-add, then configure your client to add it automatically. On macOS, enable Keychain storage as well; on Linux and other OpenSSH systems, use the desktop agent or start one for your login session.
Your private key can stay encrypted on disk. The agent holds the unlocked identity only for its lifetime, while a macOS Keychain can preserve the passphrase between sessions. Repeated prompts usually indicate a missing or incorrect SSH_AUTH_SOCK, an empty agent, a host configuration that does not match, or an expired agent entry—not a problem with the remote server.
Why SSH keeps asking for the passphrase
An SSH private key is normally encrypted with a passphrase. SSH must decrypt it before it can use the key to authenticate. The intended solution is an authentication agent: a background process that accepts the passphrase once, keeps the unlocked key in memory, and answers signing requests from SSH clients.
The SSH client reaches the agent through the Unix-domain socket named by SSH_AUTH_SOCK. If the variable is empty, points to a stale socket, or belongs to a different agent than the one where you loaded the key, SSH cannot reuse the identity and asks for the passphrase again. A reboot, logout, container boundary, or new shell can also leave you connected to an agent that has no keys.

AddKeysToAgent yes tells OpenSSH to add a key and its passphrase to a running agent when the key is successfully used. It does not create an agent by itself, and it does not make an agent entry permanent. Entries last for the agent’s lifetime unless you set a lifetime limit; when the entry expires or the agent exits, the key must be loaded again.
The basic fix on any OpenSSH client
Use these commands in the shell from which you connect. Replace the filename if your key is not ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.
Recommended Free Tools
- Start an agent only if your session does not already provide one.
eval "$(ssh-agent -s)"The command prints environment assignments, including
SSH_AUTH_SOCK, for the current shell. - Load the encrypted private key.
ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_ed25519ssh-addprompts for the key’s passphrase once. It does not upload the private key to the server. - Confirm that the agent has an identity.
ssh-add -lThis lists fingerprints for keys currently loaded. A fingerprint confirms that this shell can reach an agent containing the key; it does not prove that a particular host will accept it.
- Connect normally.
ssh user@host.exampleIf the destination accepts that key, no further passphrase prompt should appear while this agent entry remains valid.
Run ssh-add once for each private key that you actually use. Keep the private key file readable only by your account and never put its passphrase in a shell script, command history, or source repository.
Make automatic loading work with SSH configuration
OpenSSH reads per-user settings from ~/.ssh/config. A general configuration can look like this:
Host *
AddKeysToAgent yes
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
IdentityFile tells the client which private key to try. AddKeysToAgent yes asks a running agent to retain a key after the first successful use. This is useful when the agent is already supplied by your desktop login, but it cannot help if no agent exists or if SSH_AUTH_SOCK points somewhere invalid.
Use host-specific blocks when keys differ
A wildcard block is convenient only when the same identity is appropriate everywhere. For separate work, personal, or server keys, use a narrow pattern:

Host patterns are matched against the name you type, including aliases. If you connect with an alias such as ssh lab, the block must be Host lab (or a pattern that includes it), not only Host lab.example.net. Put more specific blocks before broad ones when you need different values.
macOS: use the login keychain and agent together
Apple changed automatic agent loading in macOS 10.12.2. Apple Technical Note TN2449 documents two separate options: UseKeychain yes stores the key’s passphrase in the macOS Keychain, while AddKeysToAgent yes re-enables loading the key into ssh-agent. Configure both in ~/.ssh/config:
Host *
AddKeysToAgent yes
UseKeychain yes
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
For a machine where different destinations require different keys, replace Host * with the relevant host name or alias and set the matching IdentityFile in each block. A broad block can otherwise cause SSH to offer an unintended identity or save a passphrase for the wrong key.
Load an existing key into Keychain
If the key is not already present in the agent and Keychain, load it with the Apple-supported option available in your installed macOS build:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
ssh-add --apple-use-keychain ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
You may be prompted once. Afterward, the agent can use the unlocked identity and Keychain can supply the passphrase when macOS starts a new agent session. GitHub’s current macOS setup guidance also uses automatic agent loading together with Keychain storage.
Support older OpenSSH builds
Some older clients do not recognize UseKeychain. Apple documents placing this line before the option:

IgnoreUnknown UseKeychain
UseKeychain yes

Check the client version with ssh -V before sharing a configuration between Macs or other systems. IgnoreUnknown prevents an older client from rejecting the configuration solely because it does not know UseKeychain; it does not create Keychain support on that client.
Linux and other OpenSSH systems
Many Linux desktop sessions start an agent or session keyring for you. In that case, do not start a second agent unnecessarily: load the key into the existing one with ssh-add path/to/private_key, then verify it with ssh-add -l. The key remains available until that agent ends, its lifetime limit removes the identity, or you explicitly delete it.
If your session has no agent, start one and export its environment in the current shell:
eval "$(ssh-agent -s)"
ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
ssh-add -l
Opening a new terminal does not automatically inherit an agent started in an unrelated shell. Likewise, an agent started inside a temporary remote session, container, or terminal multiplexer may not be the agent used by another environment. Arrange for your desktop login or shell startup to provide one, or repeat the three commands when you intentionally create a new session.
Graphical passphrase prompts
SSH_ASKPASS and SSH_ASKPASS_REQUIRE control graphical prompting when no usable terminal is available. They affect how OpenSSH asks for a passphrase; they do not cache a key and cannot replace loading it into an agent. If an askpass helper appears unexpectedly, first check the agent socket and loaded identities rather than treating the dialog as a persistence mechanism.
Diagnose a prompt that will not go away
Work through these checks in the same shell where the connection fails. Each command tests a different part of the path between SSH, the agent, and your key.

1. Check the agent socket
printf '%s
' "$SSH_AUTH_SOCK"
The output should be non-empty. It should name a socket belonging to the agent intended for this login. An empty value means SSH has no agent endpoint. A path left over from an ended session can produce a socket error or force SSH to prompt instead. Remove stale exports and start or select the correct agent, then load the key into it.
2. Check whether the agent has a key
ssh-add -l
If the result says that no identities are loaded, run ssh-add with the exact private-key path. If fingerprints are listed but the connection still prompts, continue with the host and identity checks below; the listed key may not be the one selected for that destination.
3. See which identity files match a host
ssh -G host.example | grep -i identityfile
This expands the effective configuration for the destination. Compare the output with the path you loaded. A typo, a different filename, or a host alias that misses your intended Host block can make SSH ignore the loaded key and try another encrypted file.
4. Verify the host pattern
Configuration options apply only when the Host pattern matches the name passed to SSH. If your command uses an alias, configure the alias. If you use a fully qualified name, ensure the pattern includes that name. Keep the correct IdentityFile and AddKeysToAgent yes in the same matching block.

OpenSSH allows an agent lifetime to be set with an interval for AddKeysToAgent. An expired key is removed automatically, so a prompt after a predictable period can be expected behavior rather than a configuration failure. Reload the key, or choose a lifetime that fits the security policy for the machine.
6. Look for multiple agents
Running several agents is a common cause of the “I already ran ssh-add” symptom. You may have loaded the key into one process while SSH_AUTH_SOCK points to another. Close stale shells or remove obsolete socket exports, start a clean session, and load the key once into the agent that the failing shell reports.

7. Reset a confused agent
To remove every identity from the current agent, use:
ssh-add -D
Then add only the keys needed for the current session and confirm the fingerprints. This is useful after testing several keys, but it also removes valid identities for other hosts from that agent.
What survives a shell, logout, and reboot?
| Situation | What normally happens | Why a prompt can return |
|---|---|---|
| Same shell and running agent | The loaded key can be reused without another passphrase. | The key was never loaded, was removed, or the shell points to another socket. |
| New terminal in the same login session | It may reuse the desktop-provided agent if its environment includes the correct SSH_AUTH_SOCK. |
The terminal inherited no socket or inherited a stale one. |
| Agent lifetime expires | OpenSSH removes the identity automatically when the configured interval ends. | The lifetime policy intentionally requires reauthentication. |
| Logout, reboot, or agent restart | In-memory agent entries disappear. | A new agent starts empty unless a desktop keyring or macOS Keychain reloads the key. |
macOS with UseKeychain yes |
The passphrase can be stored in Keychain and used when the key is loaded again. | The configuration does not match, the key path is wrong, or the installed client lacks the option. |
AddKeysToAgent yes is an automatic-loading instruction, not a guarantee that the key will survive every reboot on every operating system. Persistence depends on the agent and, on macOS, the Keychain integration.
Choose the right security trade-off
| Approach | Key encrypted at rest? | Passphrase frequency | Persistence and access | Extra hardware step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Encrypted key loaded into an agent | Yes | Usually once per agent lifetime or configured interval | Unlocked identity is available to processes that can access the agent socket; it disappears when the agent ends. | None |
| macOS Keychain plus agent | Yes | Typically once when the key is first enrolled; later sessions can reload it through Keychain. | Passphrase is stored by Keychain; agent access is still governed by the session and socket. | None |
| Unencrypted private key file | No | No key-passphrase prompt | Anyone who obtains the file can use the identity unless another control blocks it. This is a materially weaker design. | None |
| FIDO security-key identity | Private operation is performed by the hardware key | May require a PIN, touch, or both, depending on the key and policy | The authenticator is separate from the computer’s disk; losing it requires a recovery plan. | Yes |
Do not remove a private-key passphrase solely to eliminate prompts unless the machine’s threat model explicitly accepts an unencrypted key file. Agent caching keeps the file encrypted at rest, but any process able to use the agent socket may request signatures while the identity is loaded. Lock down the account, avoid sharing agent sockets, and use a lifetime that matches how long the machine is trusted.
When a hardware-backed key is a better redesign
OpenSSH supports security-key identity types including sk-ssh-ed25519@openssh.com and sk-ecdsa-sha2-nistp256@openssh.com. A FIDO authenticator changes the authentication design rather than fixing the agent configuration for an existing encrypted file. It can require a PIN or a physical touch, so it is not a way to guarantee silent logins. Consider it when you want the private operation tied to a separate device and accept the enrollment, availability, and recovery responsibilities that follow.
Quick Recap
A compact operating checklist
- Identify the actual private key file and keep it encrypted.
- Confirm
SSH_AUTH_SOCKis non-empty in the failing shell. - Run
ssh-add -l; load the key withssh-addif no identity is listed. - Use
IdentityFileandAddKeysToAgent yesin aHostblock that matches the name you type. - On macOS, add
UseKeychain yesand enroll the key withssh-add --apple-use-keychainwhen supported. - Check
ssh -Vbefore sharing a configuration that contains platform-specific options. - Inspect agent lifetime limits when prompts return after a fixed interval.
- Remove stale socket exports or duplicate agents before loading the key again.
- Use
ssh-add -Donly when you intentionally want to clear every identity from the current agent.
