Turn off Spotify’s Autoplay setting first: on mobile or tablet, tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, go to Playback, and switch Autoplay off. On desktop, click your profile picture, open Settings, and switch Autoplay off. If another podcast episode still starts, check the queue: Spotify’s Autoplay help describes similar-song playback, while podcast episodes may continue because of show or queue behavior.
The key is to identify what is continuing. Turning off Autoplay addresses the similar-song behavior described by Spotify Support; it is not documented as a separate podcast-only switch. If the next item is another episode, the queue or the show’s episode sequence may be involved. If you want the current episode to finish and then stop, Spotify’s Sleep Timer offers an End of episode option.
Turn off Autoplay in Spotify
Spotify’s official help page describes Autoplay as playing similar songs when an album, playlist, or selection of songs ends. It does not describe a separate podcast-only Autoplay switch. The setting is still the first one to check, but it may not stop episodes that continue as part of a podcast sequence or queue.
Recommended Free Tools
This distinction matters because “Spotify keeps playing” can mean more than one thing. Similar songs after a music selection ends point to the Autoplay setting described in Spotify Support. A different episode starting after a podcast episode points instead to the podcast sequence or queue behavior discussed by Spotify Community moderators. The same symptom—audio continuing when you expected it to stop—does not necessarily have the same cause or remedy.

On a mobile device or tablet
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Under Playback, switch Autoplay off.
The setting is in Playback on mobile and tablet. If you are looking for a podcast-specific control, Spotify’s official Autoplay help does not identify a separate one. Switch off the general Autoplay option, then test whether the unwanted continuation was similar music or another podcast episode. If it was another episode, continue with the queue checks below rather than assuming the switch failed.
On desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Switch Autoplay off.
On desktop, the route is through Settings rather than the mobile route’s Settings and privacy label. Spotify’s help describes the setting’s effect as playing similar songs after an album, playlist, or selection of songs ends. It does not promise that switching it off will interrupt every podcast episode sequence.
Spotify’s English-language support page for South Africa explains the setting as automatically playing similar songs after an album, playlist, or selection of songs ends. It says: “When you reach the end of an album, playlist, or selection of songs, Spotify automatically plays similar songs so the music never stops.” The wording may differ slightly in other regions.

What Spotify Autoplay does—and what it does not establish
Spotify’s official description is specifically about similar songs playing after music ends. It is useful for identifying what the Autoplay switch is meant to address, but it is not a detailed explanation of podcast playback. Spotify’s support page does not describe a separate podcast Autoplay setting or say that this switch controls every way one podcast episode can follow another.
That does not mean the switch is irrelevant if you listen to podcasts. It is still the documented setting to turn off when you want to prevent the similar-song continuation Spotify describes. But if the item that begins next is another episode of the same show or another podcast, investigate the queue and episode sequence too. A podcast continuing after an episode is a different pattern from similar songs starting after a music selection.
Spotify Community moderator responses offer the podcast-specific explanation: a show can behave like an album, with episodes in sequence or in the queue. This is moderator guidance, not a dedicated current Spotify Support policy describing every podcast playback case. Treat it as a practical explanation for why a podcast can continue even when the similar-song Autoplay setting is off, not as a guarantee that every app version behaves identically.
If another podcast episode starts anyway
Check the play queue and ask what you were playing when the extra episode began. If you were listening to a podcast and another episode followed, the queue or the show’s episode sequence may be controlling what comes next. If similar songs began after music, revisit the Autoplay setting. These are separate checks because they address different triggers.

A Spotify Community moderator recommends adding one episode to the queue if you want to listen to only that episode. The intention is to make the selected episode the content you have chosen to play, rather than relying on a broader show sequence. Also check whether other content is already queued after it. If more items are queued, they may be the reason playback does not stop after the episode you had in mind.
The Community advice does not give a single universal set of queue-management taps for every device and version. Queue controls and their appearance can differ. Use the queue visible in your current Spotify app to see what is lined up, and remove or replace unwanted queued content as appropriate for the controls your version presents. The important diagnostic is whether another item is waiting after the episode you meant to hear—not whether a particular button has the same label on every device.
Desktop single-episode workaround
In a Spotify Community response, a moderator says that opening and playing one episode on desktop adds that episode to the queue. If no other content is queued and Autoplay is off, playback should stop when that episode ends. This is moderator guidance, not a guarantee for every desktop app version.
For this approach, the conditions matter: play a single episode, make sure there is no additional content behind it in the queue, and keep Autoplay off. If another episode or other content is queued, the queue gives Spotify something else to play. If the behavior does not match the moderator’s description, it may reflect a difference in the app version or current interface; it does not establish that a podcast-only Autoplay toggle exists.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Mobile behavior can vary
In another Community discussion, a Spotify moderator described the behavior being discussed as the current expected behavior on mobile, while noting that Spotify tests and launches changes and users may see different behavior. The moderator wrote: “We can confirm that this is the current expected behavior on mobile.” That statement applies to the discussion’s mobile context; it should not be read as a promise that every mobile app version will always behave the same way.
If the queue controls or playback behavior differ from these steps, your app version or device may be using a changed interface or behavior. Spotify Community moderators have noted that Spotify tests and releases changes, so a difference between the guidance and what you see is possible. Use the steps as a way to distinguish Autoplay from queue behavior, while allowing for interface variation.
Choose the control that matches what you want
| Goal or cause | Control to use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Stop similar songs from starting after music ends | Turn off Autoplay in Playback settings on mobile/tablet, or in Settings on desktop | Addresses the similar-song continuation described by Spotify’s Autoplay help. |
| Play only one selected podcast episode | Check the queue and add the episode you want to hear | Controls which episode follows; the queue advice comes from Spotify Community moderators and can vary by device or app version. |
| Stop the current podcast at its end | Use Sleep Timer and select End of episode | Schedules playback to stop when the current episode finishes. |
These options solve different problems. Autoplay off is the relevant control when Spotify starts similar songs after a music selection ends. Queue selection is the relevant check when you want to choose which podcast episode follows. Sleep Timer is useful when you want the current episode to finish but do not want playback to continue afterward. Choosing the option based on the trigger avoids changing a setting that does not address the behavior you are seeing.

There is also a difference in timing. The Autoplay setting is a playback preference; queue selection changes what content is lined up; and the Sleep Timer’s End of episode choice is specifically a stop-at-the-end option. If your goal is to stop immediately, neither an end-of-episode timer nor a queue arrangement is the same as stopping current playback. If your goal is to hear one full episode, the timer or a single-episode queue approach is more closely aligned with that goal.

If you want to finish the episode you are listening to but do not want playback to continue afterward, use Spotify’s Sleep Timer rather than changing the queue.
- While a podcast is playing, open the Now Playing view.
- Open Sleep Timer.
- Select End of episode.
Spotify’s official Sleep Timer instructions describe opening the timer from Now Playing while listening to a podcast. Spotify’s Sleep Timer article dates to 2022, so the exact location of the control may have shifted as the app interface has changed. The option to look for is End of episode; if the path or button placement differs, use the controls in your current Now Playing view.
This is a good fit for bedtime or any other situation where you want to keep listening until the current episode is over, then have playback stop. It is not a way to choose which episode comes next if you decide to keep listening, and it does not replace checking the queue when your goal is to control the next item. It is a stop rule for the current episode.
Quick checks if the setting does not solve it
- Similar songs start after music: Confirm Autoplay is off in the relevant device’s settings. Spotify’s official help describes this setting as preventing the similar-song continuation after an album, playlist, or selection of songs.
- A different podcast episode starts: Inspect the queue and remove or replace queued content as needed; the moderator guidance is version-sensitive. Consider whether the show sequence or queue explains what followed.
- You only need playback to stop after this episode: Choose End of episode in Sleep Timer from the podcast’s Now Playing view.
- You want to hear exactly one episode: Use the queue approach described by Spotify Community moderators, and make sure there is no other content behind the episode you selected.
- Your menus do not match: Spotify says behavior can vary while it tests and releases changes, so labels and queue behavior may differ by app version or device.
- You have already switched Autoplay off: That checks the setting Spotify documents for similar songs. If a podcast episode still follows, investigate the queue rather than repeatedly toggling the same setting.
Common questions
Listeners often use “autoplay” to describe any playback that starts without another tap. Spotify’s controls distinguish the similar-song behavior in its official support description from podcast episodes that can continue through a queue or show sequence. The questions below help match the symptom to the right control.
Why does Spotify keep playing podcasts after I turn Autoplay off?
Spotify’s official Autoplay help describes similar songs after an album, playlist, or selection of songs; it does not describe a podcast-only switch. A podcast episode may be followed by another item because of the show sequence or queue, according to Spotify Community moderators. Check what is queued and which episode you chose. If the next item is a podcast episode, queue behavior is a more relevant place to look than the similar-song setting.
Is there a separate Spotify setting to turn off podcast autoplay?
The Spotify Support Autoplay page does not describe a separate podcast-specific toggle. It describes the setting for similar songs after music ends. For podcast episodes, Community moderator guidance points to show sequence and queue behavior instead. That distinction is based on the official support description and the moderators’ discussion, and should not be taken as a guarantee that Spotify will never add or change a control.

How do I stop a podcast I don’t like from autoplaying?
First determine whether an unwanted show is appearing as a queued podcast episode or whether similar songs are starting after music. Turn off Autoplay for the similar-song behavior. For podcast playback, inspect the queue and use it to choose the episode you want to hear; the moderator advice is to add a single episode if you want only that episode. The sources do not describe a separate control that blocks every unwanted podcast from ever appearing, so avoid assuming the Autoplay switch is a podcast recommendation filter.
How do I listen to one podcast episode and then stop?
Spotify Community moderators advise adding the one episode you want to the queue and checking that no other content is queued behind it. A moderator’s desktop guidance says opening and playing a single episode adds that episode to the queue; if nothing else is queued and Autoplay is off, playback should stop when it ends. If you are listening on another device, the queue approach may vary by app version. The Sleep Timer’s End of episode option is another direct way to stop after the current podcast finishes.

Can I stop Spotify after the current episode without stopping it now?
Yes. While the podcast is playing, open Now Playing, open Sleep Timer, and select End of episode. Spotify’s official Sleep Timer instructions describe this option for podcast listening. It is designed for the current episode to finish before playback stops, rather than stopping audio immediately.
Why do the steps look different on my phone or computer?
The documented menu route differs by platform: mobile or tablet uses profile picture, Settings and privacy, then Playback; desktop uses profile picture, then Settings. Spotify Community moderators also caution that behavior can change as Spotify tests and launches updates. If queue behavior or labels differ, your device or app version may have a different interface. The underlying distinction remains useful: Autoplay is documented for similar songs, while podcast continuation may involve a queue or episode sequence.
Will turning off Autoplay remove something already in my queue?
The Spotify Support description does not say that switching off Autoplay clears queued content. The Community guidance treats queue selection as a separate way to control which podcast episode follows. Therefore, check the queue rather than assuming the Autoplay switch removes items already lined up. The exact queue controls can vary, so use the controls available in your version of Spotify.

- For finishing the current podcast episode and stopping afterward, use Sleep Timer and select End of episode.
Do not treat these options as interchangeable. Autoplay off addresses the behavior Spotify describes in its music-focused help text. Queue selection addresses the content lined up to play, based on Spotify Community moderator guidance. Sleep Timer schedules a stop at the end of the current episode. If one solution does not change the behavior, reassess whether the next item is similar music, a queued episode, or simply playback you want to end after the current episode.
