If spam calls still ring after you enabled filtering, the filter is probably identifying them rather than blocking them. A warning such as “spam” or “scam likely” can leave the call available to answer. Check which action your phone is configured to take—label, screen, silence, send to voicemail, or block—then review the phone’s filtered-call lists and your carrier’s separate controls. More aggressive settings reduce interruptions but can also hide legitimate callers.
Why filtered spam calls can still ring
Call filtering is not one universal function. A service may recognize a suspicious number and attach a label while still allowing the call to ring. The Federal Trade Commission explains that a call marked “spam” or “scam likely” may still reach you so that you decide whether to answer. Identification and prevention are separate stages.
Look at the exact wording in your phone or carrier settings. “Caller ID,” “spam identification,” and “warning” generally describe labeling. “Screen,” “silence,” “send to voicemail,” and “block” describe actions that change what you hear or where the call goes. If the setting only labels calls, receiving them is expected behavior rather than a malfunction.

Treat the displayed number as evidence for reporting, not proof of the caller’s identity.

Start with a quick diagnosis

Configure the built-in controls on an iPhone
On current iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > Phone. The exact labels and availability can differ by iOS release and region, but these controls have distinct purposes.
Choose an action for unknown callers
Under Call Screening, choose the behavior that matches your tolerance for interruptions:
- Ask Reason for Calling screens calls from unknown numbers by asking the caller to provide a name and reason before your phone rings. This gives you information without requiring you to speak to every unknown caller.
- Silence sends calls from unknown numbers to voicemail instead of ringing. The caller can still leave a message, and you can review it later.
- Never leaves calls from unsaved numbers ringing normally.
Use screening when you occasionally need calls from new people but do not want to answer robocalls. Use silence when uninterrupted time matters more and voicemail is an acceptable fallback. Neither setting guarantees that every spam call will be identified.

Enable Unknown Callers to place calls from numbers the phone does not recognize in a separate list. An unfamiliar number can be legitimate: a medical office, delivery driver, school, employer, or government agency may not be saved in your contacts. Check this list after enabling aggressive filtering, especially when you are waiting for an appointment or service call.
Turn on the carrier-based Spam filter
Enable Spam if it appears in the Phone settings. Apple describes its behavior this way: “Calls identified by your carrier as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to the Spam list.” Because the carrier makes the identification, this feature depends on carrier support and may not appear for every customer or country.
Silenced calls may not produce the same alert as a normal call. Review the Spam list and voicemail when you are testing the setting. If a wanted caller was incorrectly classified, use the available correction or “not spam” control and save the number in your contacts.
Enable caller identification sources
Open Call Blocking & Identification to enable identification supplied by Apple Business Connect, your carrier, or a compatible caller-ID app. These sources can improve labeling, but identification alone does not equal blocking. Read each source’s description to see whether it labels, silences, or blocks calls.

Configure spam controls in the Google Phone app
On Android, menu names and features depend on the phone manufacturer, operating-system version, and country. In the Google Phone app, open Phone > More > Settings, then look for Spam and Call Screen or Caller ID and spam.
Enable identification and filtering
- Open the Phone app and tap More, usually shown as three dots.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Spam and Call Screen or Caller ID and spam.
- Turn on caller and spam identification.
- If available, turn on Filter spam calls.
Google warns that not all spam calls and robocalls can be detected. Filtered calls may not generate a missed-call or voicemail notification, although they remain in call history and voicemail can still be checked. Examine those locations before deciding that a call was never received.
Block or report a specific number
To handle a repeat caller, open the number in call history and choose the option to block or report it. This is useful when one number is repeatedly contacting you, but it is less effective against spoofing or campaigns that rotate numbers. Blocking private or unidentified numbers is a separate setting and does not block every unsaved number.
If the relevant menu does not exist, the phone, Android version, installed Phone app, or region may not support that feature. Do not assume that installing an update will add carrier-dependent protection; availability can depend on the network as well.

Use automatic Call Screen on compatible Pixel phones
Compatible Pixel devices can offer automatic Call Screen, which answers certain calls with an automated prompt and asks the caller to identify themselves. Google documents protection choices that can include spam, possibly faked numbers, and first-time callers. The available choices vary by device, operating system, SIM country, and region.
Google lists automatic screening availability for Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Manual screening supports a broader country list, while some functions are limited to specified Pixel models. Automatic screening may not work while roaming, and Google advises against using call forwarding with it. Check Google’s current device-specific support page before relying on a particular option during travel.
Call Screen is not a perfect barrier. A caller can be misclassified, a legitimate caller can be screened, and an unrecognized spam call can still reach you. Keep voicemail available and review screened-call details when you are expecting an important call.

Ask your carrier for a separate blocking service
Phone settings and carrier services operate at different points in the call path. The FTC recommends checking your provider’s website or contacting customer service for call-blocking and call-labeling options. A carrier may offer a network-level service that labels, blocks, silences, or routes suspected fraud calls before the handset handles them.

Some services may be free while others charge a recurring fee. Ask specifically:
- Does the service label calls, block them, silence them, or send them to voicemail?
- Can you review a list of blocked or filtered calls?
- Will filtered calls create missed-call or voicemail notifications?
- Can you restore a legitimate number that was classified incorrectly?
- Does the service cover calls to all lines on your account or only one line?
- Are there roaming, international, prepaid, or device restrictions?
Do not enable overlapping services blindly. A carrier filter and a handset filter may apply different rules, making it harder to determine why a call disappeared. Change one layer at a time, place a test call from a legitimate unsaved number, and record where the call appears.
Consider a call-blocking app carefully
The FTC lists call-blocking apps as another option. Depending on the app, it may stop calls, silence them, send them to voicemail, or display a caller list. Before installing one, read current ratings, feature descriptions, independent expert reviews, and the privacy policy.
Pay particular attention to data access. Some apps request access to contacts, call logs, or caller information to classify calls. Decide whether the benefit justifies that access, and review the app’s permission settings after installation. No app can promise to stop every unwanted call, especially when callers spoof numbers or use newly created numbers.

A step-by-step escalation plan
1. Confirm the current behavior
Allow one suspected spam call to reach the phone, if safe to do so, and note what happens. Does it ring normally with a label, ask the caller questions, go directly to voicemail, or appear only in history? This observation tells you whether the setting is identifying, screening, silencing, or blocking.

2. Check all filtered destinations
Review call history, voicemail, the iPhone Unknown Callers and Spam lists, or the corresponding Android spam and blocked views. A filter can work correctly while hiding the notification you expected. Search for a legitimate number that called during the test.
3. Select one stronger action
If labeling is insufficient, enable screening or silencing first. Blocking is the most disruptive choice because it can prevent a caller from ringing or leaving a message. On iPhone, choose Call Screening behavior and enable Spam when available. On Android, enable Filter spam calls and use Call Screen on a compatible Pixel if your region supports it.
4. Test with a known legitimate unknown number
Ask a trusted person whose number is not saved to call you, or use a legitimate service call you can safely anticipate. Confirm whether the call rings, is screened, reaches voicemail, and remains visible in history. Save important numbers and mark false positives as not spam where the phone provides that control.
5. Add carrier protection if handset controls are not enough
Contact the carrier and ask for its current blocking or labeling service. Get the exact behavior, fee, supported lines, and correction process before activating it. After activation, repeat the legitimate-number test because network filtering can change what reaches the phone.
6. Add an app only if its trade-offs fit
Install no more than one additional filtering app initially. Compare its permissions and actions with the controls already enabled. If calls become impossible to trace, disable the app temporarily and test the carrier and handset layers separately.

Every stronger filter trades convenience for a greater chance of a false positive. Unknown numbers include new doctors, schools, employers, couriers, repair technicians, banks, and government offices. Before enabling automatic blocking, consider whether those callers can leave voicemail and whether you reliably check it.
- Save numbers for appointments, deliveries, schools, workplaces, and family members.
- Tell expected callers to leave a voicemail or use a known alternate channel if screening stops the call.
- Check filtered lists and voicemail after changing settings, especially during the first few days.
- Keep a record of a wanted number that was mislabeled and use the phone’s correction control when available.
- Temporarily relax screening when waiting for an urgent call from an unknown number, then restore your preferred protection afterward.
Do not confuse “unknown” with “spam.” An unknown caller is simply not recognized by your contacts or caller-identification data. A spam classification is an assessment that the call resembles unwanted or fraudulent activity. Different settings act on those categories independently.

Report persistent unwanted calls
Reporting helps regulators identify patterns, particularly when scammers change numbers. The FTC asks for the number that received the call, the number displayed on caller ID even if you believe it was spoofed, any callback number provided by the caller, and the date and time when available.
Report a scam loss or information about a scammer at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Use DoNotCall.gov to report unwanted calls when you did not lose money. Keep the details factual. Do not call back a suspicious number merely to collect information, and do not provide personal or financial data to a caller who pressures you.
Reporting does not instantly block the next call. Use it alongside handset, carrier, or app controls. Because spoofed caller ID can point to an uninvolved person or business, avoid accusing the displayed number’s owner based solely on the screen.

No platform in the documented options provides a universal block-success rate, and none detects every spam call. Detection depends on available caller data, changing scam patterns, the device and operating system, carrier participation, and country-specific support. A filter can also silence a legitimate caller.
Feature names and menus change across iOS releases, Android builds, Pixel models, carriers, and regions. If a menu is missing, first confirm the phone model, operating-system version, SIM country, roaming status, and installed Phone app. Then consult the current Apple, Google, or carrier support page for that exact combination instead of following instructions for another device.
Choose the right level of protection
- You only need a warning: keep caller-ID and spam labeling enabled, then decide case by case.
- You want fewer interruptions but still accept unknown callers: use iPhone Call Screening or a compatible Android/Pixel screening feature.
- You rarely need calls from unsaved numbers: silence unknown callers and rely on voicemail and filtered lists.
- Large waves of spoofed calls continue: ask the carrier about network-level protection and report representative calls.
- You need detailed caller lists or custom rules: evaluate one reputable app, focusing on permissions, privacy, and false-positive recovery.
The practical fix is to align the action with your goal: a label tells you a call looks suspicious; screening asks the caller to identify themselves; silencing keeps the phone quiet while preserving voicemail; blocking prevents delivery but carries the highest risk of losing a wanted call. Start with the least disruptive option that solves the interruption, verify where calls are stored, and escalate only when the evidence from your own call history shows it is necessary.
