The fix depends on what “tagging” means. A platform may use face recognition to suggest a name, another person may manually attach an account to a photo, or a photo library may group faces only inside your private collection. No single switch controls all three. Turn off or restrict the specific feature involved, then review existing tags and limit the audience of posts that contain people.
The most direct controls covered here are X’s photo-tagging setting (including Off), Facebook’s discontinued face-recognition suggestions and separate profile/tag review tools, Google Photos’ Face Groups switch, and TikTok’s post-audience and download settings. Instagram’s current official menu and the distinction between its manual-tag approval and any recognition behavior are not established here, so the Instagram section explains what not to assume rather than giving an unverified path.
First identify which kind of tag you are trying to stop
People often use “automatic tag” to describe different actions. The setting that stops one action may have no effect on the others.

Face-based suggestions
A service analyzes a face in a photo and proposes a person’s name or account. This is a platform-generated suggestion. Disabling it affects the recognition or suggestion system; it does not necessarily stop someone from typing an account name manually.

Manual photo tags
Another user selects a person in a posted image and links that person’s account. Controls may let you block all photo tags, limit them to people you follow, require review, or keep the tag from appearing on your profile. A profile-review setting is not the same as preventing the original poster from adding the tag.
Private-library face grouping
A photo service can cluster faces in your own library and let you name those groups. This is an organization feature, not a social-network tag. Turning it off changes the data and labels in your library, not images already shared elsewhere.

A practical order of operations
- Open the app’s privacy settings and look for separate entries for photo tagging, face recognition, profile/tag review, audience, and downloads.
- Disable or narrow the direct photo-tag control first. If the choices are Off, Only people you follow, and Anyone can tag you, choose the least permissive option that fits your use.
- Review tags already attached to your account. Approve, hide, remove, or report each one using the app’s tag or activity tools.
- For a photo you control, change its audience before sharing. If the service offers Only you, use that for a private test or sensitive image.
- Tell people who already received the image that changing your setting cannot erase a copy on their device. Ask them to delete or stop sharing it when necessary.
These steps reduce automated suggestions and account links, but no setting makes a publicly visible face impossible to recognize. A person can still describe someone, mention an account in text, share a link, take a screenshot, or upload the image to another service.

Facebook: face-based suggested tagging ended, but tag review still matters
Do not look for the old “tag suggestions” switch
Meta previously used the term “tag suggestions” for Facebook’s use of face recognition to suggest tags. In a September 3, 2019 explanation, Meta described replacing that terminology with a broader face-recognition setting. On November 2, 2021, Meta announced that people would no longer be able to turn on face recognition for suggested tagging or see a suggested tag with their name in photos and videos they may appear in.
In practical terms, an article that tells you to find a current “automatic tag suggestions” switch on Facebook is stale. The face-based suggestion feature described in Meta’s 2021 announcement is not a setting you can re-enable or disable through a current menu.
Meta’s wording was explicit: “People will no longer be able to turn on face recognition for suggested tagging or see a suggested tag with their name in photos and videos they may appear in.” That statement addresses face-recognition suggestions, not every kind of tag.

Use Profile and tagging controls for manual tags
Facebook’s profile and tagging controls govern how tagged posts are handled on your profile. Interface labels can differ by app version and account, so open Settings & privacy, enter Settings, and use the settings search for Profile and tagging if the section is not visible. Review options concerning who can see tagged posts on your profile and whether posts you are tagged in must be reviewed before they appear there.

If you need the tag removed from that post, open the post itself and use its tag or reporting options. The original uploader may still control the image and its audience.
Check an existing tag in Activity Log
For a tag that already exists, open your profile’s Activity Log and filter for tagged activity. Depending on the item and your permissions, you may be able to hide it from your profile, remove the tag, or report the post. Hiding a tagged post from your profile does not delete the photo from Facebook or from another person’s device.
X: turn photo tagging off or restrict it to people you follow
X provides the clearest direct control in the documented settings. Its Help Center says you can choose who can tag you in a photo on x.com and in the iOS and Android apps.
On the web
- Sign in on x.com and open Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy and safety.
- Find the photo-tagging setting under the section for your posts or audience interactions.
- Select Off to disable photo tagging, Only people you follow to limit it, or Anyone can tag you to allow it.
- Save or confirm the change if X presents a confirmation button.
In the mobile app
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy and safety, then open the photo-tagging control.
- Choose Off or Only people you follow.
X’s documented choices are quoted as follows: “You can select Off to disable photo tagging, or you can enable photo tagging by selecting Anyone can tag you or Only people you follow.” This is a control over other accounts linking your account to a photo. It is not a promise that an image cannot be reposted, described, or associated with you in ordinary post text.

After changing the setting
Check your profile and notifications for tags created before the change. Remove or report individual items where the interface allows it. The setting governs future tagging permission; it does not recall an image that someone has already saved.

Google Photos: disable Face Groups only if you accept the data deletion
Google Photos’ Face Groups feature organizes faces inside your own library. It is not a social-network tag control and does not stop another service from recognizing a face in a posted image.
Turn off Face Groups
- Go to photos.google.com/settings while signed in to the relevant Google account.
- Locate Group similar faces (Google’s setting for Face Groups).
- Turn the setting off and read the confirmation before accepting.
Google states that turning off Face Groups deletes your face groups, the face models used to create those groups, and face labels you created. Treat this as a destructive change to your private-library organization, not as a temporary pause. If you may want those groups or labels later, export or otherwise organize the photos using a method that does not depend on Face Groups before switching it off.
Google also notes that Face Groups is not available in all geographic regions, domains, or account types. If you cannot see the setting, that absence does not prove the feature is active or inactive; availability depends on the account and location.

Turning off Face Groups does not remove a photo from a social network, delete another person’s copy, or prevent someone from manually naming a person in a post. It only affects the face-grouping data and labels in the Google Photos library where you changed the setting.
TikTok: limit visibility and downloading, not identification
Set a post’s audience
TikTok’s documented post-privacy controls apply to both photos and videos. When creating or editing a post, open its audience or privacy selector and choose the narrowest available audience. Only you is the private option described in the official help. On an existing post, open the post’s options, choose its privacy settings, and change the audience there.
An audience change limits who can view the post through TikTok. It does not prevent a person who already saw the image from identifying someone, saving a copy by another method, or sharing information about it elsewhere.

Turn off video downloads
- Open TikTok’s privacy settings.
- Find the setting for video downloads.
- Turn downloads off and confirm.
TikTok says: “When you turn the video downloads setting off, people can’t download videos or photos you’ve already posted or your future content.” The restriction applies to TikTok’s download feature. TikTok also warns that material downloaded while downloads were enabled remains on other people’s devices, and sharing through links or direct messages may still be possible.

For a post that should not circulate, set its audience before publishing, then keep downloads off. These measures reduce ordinary in-app access and downloading; they are not face-recognition controls and do not guarantee that no copy exists.
Instagram: do not rely on an unverified menu path
The current official material available for this guide does not establish Instagram’s exact menu path or clearly separate its present manual-tag approval control from any automatic face-recognition behavior. Because labels and locations can change, avoid treating an old tutorial as proof that a switch disables automatic recognition.
Use Instagram’s in-app privacy search to look for photo-tagging, mentions, tags, and review controls. Read the description attached to each option: a setting that requires approval before a tag appears on your profile is different from one that prevents another account from attaching the tag, and neither necessarily disables recognition by a separate system. If the wording does not state what is blocked, test with a non-sensitive image and check whether the result changes before relying on the setting.

Existing tags
Most controls are forward-looking. Review old tags separately in the account’s activity, profile, or post controls. Removing a link to your account is different from deleting the post, which may require the uploader or platform to act.

Neither a tag restriction nor a download switch recalls files already saved. TikTok specifically says downloads made while its download option was enabled remain on other people’s devices. The same practical limitation applies to screenshots, screen recordings, and copies transferred outside the service.

Other ways people can identify someone
A person can still use a name in caption text, a comment, a mention, a direct message, or a link. A platform setting aimed at photo tags does not police every reference to a person.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“I still receive a tag notification after disabling suggestions.”
You may be seeing a manual tag. Check whether your platform offers a separate photo-tag permission or review setting. On Facebook, face-based suggested tagging was discontinued, while profile and tag review remains separate. On X, choose Off rather than a face-recognition option; X’s control is specifically about who can tag you in a photo.
“The photo disappeared from my profile but is still online.”
Profile hiding or review changes the profile display, not necessarily the original post. Open the original item and use its remove-tag, report, or privacy controls. If you do not control the post, ask the uploader to remove it or change its audience.
“I turned off face grouping and lost labels.”
That is the documented consequence in Google Photos: turning off Face Groups deletes face groups, face models, and labels you created. Re-enable the feature only if you accept rebuilding that organization; do not assume the old groups will return.
“People can still share my TikTok photo.”
Confirm both the post audience and download setting. A download switch does not erase earlier downloads, and TikTok says links or direct messages may still be used to share content. For maximum restriction, change the post to Only you or remove it if that is appropriate.
“I cannot find the setting.”
Use the app’s settings search, check whether you are in the correct account, and update the app before trying again. Labels vary by platform version, region, domain, and account type. Do not substitute a similarly named control without reading what it actually governs.
A repeatable privacy check for photos with other people
- Before posting, identify every person who can be recognized and ask whether the image should be public.
- Choose the audience first; do not rely on a tag-review setting to protect a publicly visible image.
- Open the platform’s photo-tagging control and select Off or the narrowest audience available.
- Enable profile or tag review where offered, then inspect the activity or profile area after someone tags you.
- For private-library organization, decide separately whether face grouping is worth retaining. In Google Photos, disabling Face Groups deletes its groups, models, and labels.
- After publishing, check notifications and existing tags. Remove account links that you did not approve and contact the uploader when the image itself must be deleted.
- Assume that anything already viewed may have been copied. Ask recipients to delete copies when the risk is significant.
