To stop only SmartNews breaking-news alerts, open SmartNews → Profile → Settings (gear) → Notifications and switch off Breaking News. To block every SmartNews alert, use your device settings: on iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Notifications → SmartNews and turn off Allow Notifications; on Android, go to Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → SmartNews → Notifications, then turn notifications off or disable individual categories.
The important distinction is scope. The SmartNews switch changes selected notification categories, while the operating-system switch blocks all SmartNews notifications, regardless of which category created them.
Choose the right way to stop SmartNews alerts
Use the narrowest control that solves the problem. If you want to keep useful local updates or personalized recommendations but do not want urgent headlines, turn off only Breaking News inside SmartNews. If you want a completely silent app, turn off SmartNews notifications in iOS/iPadOS or Android. An operating-system block is broader and faster, but it also suppresses categories you may otherwise want.

What SmartNews notification categories mean
Turning off Breaking News does not necessarily make SmartNews silent because it is only one notification category. SmartNews describes Breaking News as “Immediate notifications regarding important or urgent news unfolding at this moment.” The app also lists Scheduled Pushes, Local Updates, Personalized Picks, and Point Campaigns.

For example, disabling Breaking News can stop urgent developing-story alerts while leaving a scheduled push or a local update enabled. If an alert appears after you changed the Breaking News switch, read its wording and identify which type it represents, then disable that category as well. If you do not want to sort categories individually, use the complete device-level block described below.
Turn off Breaking News and other categories inside SmartNews
The in-app controls are available on both iOS and Android. They preserve the rest of your phone’s notification permissions, so they are the best first step when you want selective control.
- Open the SmartNews app.
- Tap Profile in the bottom bar.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Tap Notifications.
- Switch Breaking News off. To reduce alerts further, switch off any other unwanted categories, such as Scheduled Pushes, Local Updates, Personalized Picks, or Point Campaigns.
If the bottom bar is hidden, SmartNews says to drag down on any channel tab to reveal the Profile icon. Once the Profile icon appears, follow the same Settings and Notifications path.

Leave the categories you still want enabled and turn off only Breaking News. This is useful when you want local information or personalized recommendations but do not want interruptions for developing stories. Because the category switches are independent, check every category shown on your account rather than assuming that the Breaking News switch controls the entire app.

Make SmartNews silent from inside the app
In Profile → Settings → Notifications, turn off every available category. This is a selective app-level configuration rather than a phone-wide permission change. It is reversible from the same screen and can be preferable when you want to keep the operating system’s notification permission available for a later change.
Block all SmartNews notifications on iPhone or iPad
For a complete iOS or iPadOS block, use Apple’s app-specific notification permission:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to and tap SmartNews.
- Turn Allow Notifications off.
This device-level switch blocks SmartNews alerts regardless of which in-app category generated them. It therefore covers Breaking News, Scheduled Pushes, Local Updates, Personalized Picks, Point Campaigns, and any other SmartNews category currently exposed to your account.

If SmartNews is missing from the Notifications list
Open SmartNews and revisit Profile → Settings → Notifications, then return to Settings → Notifications. iOS normally lists apps that have notification settings available; the exact ordering can vary. If you are troubleshooting inconsistent delivery rather than trying to block alerts, also check Settings → General → Background App Refresh and ensure SmartNews is enabled, as SmartNews recommends for delivery problems.

Turn alerts back on later
Return to Settings → Notifications → SmartNews and turn Allow Notifications on. Then review the alert styles on that page and the category choices inside SmartNews so that re-enabling the app does not restore more alert types than you want.
Block all or selected SmartNews notifications on Android
Android menu names differ by version and manufacturer, but the control is the SmartNews app’s notification page:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps. Some Android versions label this Apps & notifications.
- Select SmartNews.
- Tap Notifications.
- For a complete block, turn SmartNews notifications off. To keep some alerts, leave notifications enabled and switch off only the unwanted categories.
On devices that expose notification channels or categories, Android may show separate switches beneath the main permission. Disable the channel associated with the alert you do not want, rather than turning off the master switch, when you want other SmartNews messages to remain available.
Why Android labels can look different
Android manufacturers reorganize Settings and use different wording. You may see Apps, Apps & notifications, or a notification option nested under an app’s permissions. Search Settings for “SmartNews” or “notifications” if the listed path does not match your phone. The destination you need is the SmartNews app page with its notification controls.

Re-enable Android alerts
Return to Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → SmartNews → Notifications and turn the master permission on. If your phone lists individual categories, enable only the channels you want, then check SmartNews’s own notification screen to make sure the in-app categories agree.
Why SmartNews alerts can continue after you turn one off
Another SmartNews category is still enabled
The most common explanation is scope: Breaking News is not the only SmartNews category. A scheduled push, local update, personalized pick, or point-campaign message can arrive even when Breaking News is off. Open Profile → Settings → Notifications and inspect every category, or use the device-level block for a guaranteed all-alert stop.
The phone permission still allows SmartNews
In-app switches and operating-system permissions are separate layers. Turning a category off inside SmartNews does not turn off the phone’s general SmartNews permission, and turning the phone permission on does not select which categories SmartNews should send. For a complete block, confirm that the operating-system switch is off. For selective control, confirm both layers: the OS must allow notifications, while the unwanted in-app categories must be off.
Settings changed after reinstalling or switching devices
SmartNews says notification delivery can take time to fully stabilize—up to 7 days—after you reinstall the app, switch devices, or change notification settings. This is a troubleshooting window, not a reason to accept unwanted alerts indefinitely. Apply the settings again, verify the phone permission, and continue with the checks below if messages keep appearing.

Background or battery restrictions affect delivery behavior
Restrictions can make notification behavior appear inconsistent. On iOS, SmartNews recommends checking Settings → General → Background App Refresh and ensuring SmartNews is enabled when troubleshooting delivery. On Android, check battery optimization or background-usage controls and make sure SmartNews is not marked Sleeping or Restricted. These settings are relevant to delivery troubleshooting; they do not replace the notification switches used to block alerts.

Work through the layers in order so that you do not change unrelated phone settings.
- Identify the alert. Note whether the message is a breaking story, scheduled push, local update, personalized pick, point campaign, or another category shown by SmartNews.
- Reset the in-app choices. In SmartNews, open Profile → Settings → Notifications. Turn notifications off, turn them back on, and select only the categories you want. SmartNews recommends this reset sequence when notification behavior is not responding to changes.
- Check the operating-system permission. On iPhone/iPad, open Settings → Notifications → SmartNews. On Android, open Settings → Apps or Apps & notifications → SmartNews → Notifications. Make sure the master setting matches your goal.
- Review background controls. On iOS, check Settings → General → Background App Refresh and ensure SmartNews is enabled. On Android, inspect battery optimization and background-usage limits; remove Sleeping or Restricted status for SmartNews when troubleshooting delivery.
- Restart the device. Restarting can clear a stale notification-service state after permissions or category settings change.
- Allow for stabilization when relevant. If you recently reinstalled SmartNews, changed devices, or changed notification settings, SmartNews documents a possible stabilization period of up to seven days. During that period, keep checking the selected categories and the OS permission rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
If alerts still arrive after a complete block
Recheck that you changed the correct SmartNews entry, not a similarly named news app, and that the master Allow Notifications or Android notification switch is actually off. If the alert is not generated by SmartNews—for example, it comes from a browser, a widget, or another news application—its notification permission must be managed separately. The SmartNews controls cannot suppress notifications produced by another app.

Selective control versus a complete block
Use selective controls when you value some SmartNews messages and can identify the unwanted category. This keeps the app useful without allowing urgent alerts to interrupt you. Use the operating-system block when your priority is certainty and simplicity, such as during sleep, meetings, travel, or a period when you do not want any SmartNews activity.
The trade-off is reversibility at the same scope. Category switches let you fine-tune alerts and preserve other categories. The iPhone/iPad Allow Notifications switch and Android master notification switch are broader: they stop everything from SmartNews until you restore permission. Neither approach deletes your account, channels, saved content, or the app itself.
