To stop Ray-Ban Meta glasses from routinely sending media to Meta, open the Meta AI app, connect the glasses, go to Glasses privacy, and switch Cloud media off. If you also want to prevent image-based AI requests, disable Meta AI and Camera use. To limit ambient voice capture, turn off Respond without “Hey Meta”, review Voice activity log, and delete entries you do not want retained.
Those controls address different data paths. Cloud media concerns ordinary photos and videos, visual AI sends an image for analysis when you ask what you are looking at, and the voice setting controls the short listening window after a command. Labels and availability can differ by model, firmware, country, and Meta AI app version, so use the equivalent privacy menu shown on your device.
What can smart glasses send to the cloud?
“Uploading photos” is not one single operation. Ray-Ban Meta glasses can have separate paths for gallery media, visual questions, voice commands, and communications. A setting that closes one path may leave another available.

Ordinary photos and videos
The Meta AI app’s Cloud media control governs the documented cloud-media path for routine captures. With Cloud media off, current how-to reporting says photos and videos remain on the glasses instead of being sent to Meta servers for cloud processing. This is the first setting to change if your concern is automatic or routine media transfer.

Images used for visual AI
Visual questions are different from ordinary gallery syncing. Ray-Ban’s official FAQ says: “When you ask Meta AI questions about what you’re looking at, your glasses will send a photo to Meta’s cloud to be processed with AI.” Asking about a sign, object, scene, or other view therefore creates an image-processing request even if routine Cloud media is disabled.
Voice commands and follow-up speech
Voice interactions have their own capture behavior. Ray-Ban says that when Respond without “Hey Meta” is enabled, the microphone remains on briefly after each request. If you start speaking during those few seconds, the glasses can record and process that follow-up audio.
Calls and explicitly initiated features
Turning off the follow-up window does not necessarily disable every microphone use. Calls and commands that you deliberately start can still use audio, depending on the model and software. Treat each control as a limitation on a particular feature path, not as a promise that every microphone or network function is disabled.

Step-by-step: close the main upload paths
- Connect the glasses. Open the Meta AI app and make sure the glasses appear as connected. Settings can be unavailable or incomplete while the companion app cannot communicate with the device.
- Open the privacy menu. Enter the glasses’ device settings and select Glasses privacy, or the equivalent privacy menu in your app version.
- Disable Cloud media. Switch Cloud media off. This changes the documented routine cloud-processing path for new captures; it is not a deletion command for files already transferred.
- Disable visual AI when image processing is unacceptable. In Meta AI settings, turn off Meta AI and/or Camera use. Use both when you do not want the documented visual-question workflow available.
- Close the post-command listening window. Open Hey Meta preferences and turn off Respond without “Hey Meta.” If your model exposes a separate voice-activation switch, turn that off as well when you want no voice wake-up feature.
- Review stored voice entries. Return to Glasses privacy, open Voice activity log, inspect the entries, and delete recordings you do not want retained.
- Use a physical shutdown for sensitive situations. When the glasses must not operate at all, power them off rather than relying only on an app toggle.
After changing a setting, close and reopen the relevant menu to confirm that the switch remains in the desired position. If the app presents a confirmation dialog, read whether it refers to future activity, existing history, or both; those are different actions.
How to keep photos and videos off Meta’s cloud path
What Cloud media off changes
Cloud media is the specific control for routine gallery captures. With it disabled, the documented behavior is that photos and videos stay on the device rather than being sent to Meta servers for cloud processing. This is the appropriate setting when you still want to take pictures but do not want routine cloud media handling.

What it does not change
- It does not retroactively erase files that were already uploaded.
- It does not necessarily stop every sharing, messaging, or other explicitly initiated transfer feature.
- It does not, by itself, prevent a visual AI question from using a photo; that path has separate Meta AI and Camera use controls.
For a strict local-only policy, combine Cloud media off with the visual-AI controls and avoid manually sending or sharing captures.
How to prevent visual questions from uploading an image
Why a visual question is an upload
The glasses need an image to answer questions about your surroundings. Ray-Ban’s FAQ explicitly states that the glasses send a photo to Meta’s cloud for AI processing when you ask Meta AI about what you are looking at. The upload is therefore part of the feature, not an accidental side effect of ordinary camera use.
Disable the feature paths
In the Meta AI app, locate the Meta AI settings and switch off Meta AI and/or Camera use. The official FAQ documents these toggles, although the exact wording can change with software updates. Disable both if you want to remove both the assistant and camera-based route rather than only one of them.
Trade-off
With those features disabled, visual questions and other camera-dependent AI functions will no longer be available. You can still use any independent camera or local functions that your model and app leave enabled, but the app should not offer the documented visual-AI path while the relevant switch is off.
How to stop follow-up voice recording
Turn off Respond without “Hey Meta”
Open the Meta AI app’s Hey Meta preferences and switch off Respond without “Hey Meta.” When this option is on, Ray-Ban says the glasses continue listening briefly after a voice command, and speech that starts during that interval can be recorded and processed. Turning the option off removes that short follow-up window.

Consider the separate voice-activation switch
Some versions expose a separate voice or voice-activation toggle. If your app shows one and you want the assistant unavailable unless deliberately re-enabled, turn it off too. Because labels vary, confirm the setting’s description before saving.

This change does not necessarily disable audio for calls or for a command that you intentionally initiate. It specifically removes the documented period in which a new utterance can be captured immediately after the previous command without the wake phrase.
How to review and delete voice recordings
Open the activity log
Current reporting places the recordings under Glasses privacy → Voice activity log. Open that page after connecting the glasses and wait for the app to load the available entries.
Delete entries
Use the delete control for individual recordings or the bulk option if the current app provides one. Confirm that the entry disappears from the visible log, then revisit the page after synchronization if you want to verify the local account view has updated.
Know what deletion proves
Removing an entry from the app’s activity log means it is no longer available in that log. It does not establish that every copy has been removed from backups, audit records, safety systems, or other service infrastructure. The app does not provide evidence in this workflow that all such systems have been purged.

Use the capture LED as an immediate signal
Meta describes a white external capture LED that blinks to signify that content is being captured for the gallery. Watch this indicator whenever the glasses are powered on around other people or sensitive material. It is a visible social-privacy cue, not a replacement for the app settings.
Meta also states that covering or disabling the capture LED disables the camera. Do not treat tampering with the indicator as a workaround: it prevents camera operation rather than allowing covert recording. If you need certainty that the camera and microphones cannot operate, power the glasses off.
What to do when a setting is missing
Check the connection and account
Reconnect the glasses in the Meta AI app, confirm that the correct device is selected, and sign in to the account that normally manages the glasses. Device-level menus can be hidden when the app is offline or when a different pair is selected.
Look for renamed menus
Search the glasses settings for terms such as Privacy, Glasses privacy, Cloud media, Hey Meta, Voice, or Voice activity log. Meta and Ray-Ban can rename controls or change their location by firmware, app release, country, or model.

If you update the companion app or glasses firmware, note your privacy switches first. Updates can restore defaults, move controls, or introduce separate toggles. Reopen the privacy menu after updating and verify each choice instead of assuming the previous configuration carried over.

When a control is unavailable by design
A model or region may not expose every feature. If the app does not offer Cloud media, Meta AI, Camera use, or voice controls, do not infer that the corresponding data path is disabled. Check the model’s current documentation and rely on the physical shutdown and capture indicator for immediate situations.
Reported unexpected-recording incident
In October 2026, current reporting described complaints about unexpected voice recordings and said Meta considered the reported issue resolved. That report is an incident account, not proof that all smart glasses record unexpectedly. Use it as a reason to review your settings and voice log, not as evidence that a particular pair is currently malfunctioning.
If you see entries you do not recognize, save the date and time shown by the app, delete the entries you do not want retained, disable the relevant voice settings, and contact the manufacturer through its current support channel. Keep the glasses powered off while investigating circumstances in which recording would be unacceptable.
A practical privacy checklist
- Cloud media is off in the connected glasses’ privacy menu.
- Meta AI and Camera use are off if no visual question should send an image for processing.
- Respond without “Hey Meta” is off, and any separate voice-activation switch is off when you do not need voice wake-up.
- Voice activity log has been reviewed and unwanted entries deleted.
- The capture LED is visible and functioning; it has not been covered or altered.
- The glasses are powered off before entering situations where any camera or microphone operation is unacceptable.
- After an app or firmware update, every privacy choice has been checked again.
Questions to ask before choosing a setting
Do I still want to take photos?
If yes, start with Cloud media off. Add Meta AI and Camera use off only if you also want to remove the visual-question route.
Do I need calls?
Do not assume that disabling post-command responses disables calls. Check the model’s call controls separately and use power-off when no audio function may run.
Am I deleting history or preventing a future upload?
Cloud media, Meta AI, Camera use, and the follow-up voice setting change future feature behavior. Voice activity log deletion addresses entries already visible in the app. Use both prevention and deletion when you need each outcome.
