The most reliable privacy control is to switch the glasses off. For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, slide the physical power switch to off whenever you do not want the camera or microphones operating. When the glasses are on, disable Cloud media and Share additional data in the Meta AI app, turn off Respond without “Hey Meta,” review voice activity, disconnect social destinations, and manage the copy of each capture in your phone gallery. Never cover the capture LED: Meta says it has no off switch, and blocking or tampering with it disables the camera.
These steps reduce recording, cloud processing, telemetry and accidental sharing, but they do not create one universal retention rule. Gallery captures, cloud media, AI-processed photos, voice interactions and account data are handled differently. The labels and available controls can change by hardware generation, region and app version.
What the glasses can record and where the data goes
Privacy decisions are easier when you separate five data paths: camera captures saved on the glasses, media imported to a phone, optional cloud media, AI processing and voice activity, and files sent to another service.

Gallery photos and videos start on the glasses
Meta says photos and videos captured for the gallery are stored privately on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them. A capture therefore is not automatically in your phone gallery or in a Meta cloud account merely because the shutter was pressed. The wearer controls the import step.

Imported files become ordinary phone media
After import, the file is governed by the phone’s gallery and any backup service enabled there. A cloud-photo backup, family-sharing library or messaging app can copy it independently of the glasses. Deleting a file from the glasses does not remove copies already imported, backed up or sent elsewhere.
Cloud media is a separate path
The Meta AI app has a Cloud media switch under Glasses privacy. Android Central describes the enabled feature as sending photos and videos to Meta servers for cloud processing and storing them in the cloud for 30 days before automatic deletion. That behavior is a feature description, not a universal guarantee: availability, retention and wording may vary by region and app version. Turn the switch off if your goal is to keep media off Meta’s cloud-processing path.
AI-processed photos can contain more than the image file
The Ray-Ban FAQ says AI-processed photos, including recognized objects and text, are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with trained reviewers, under Meta’s Privacy Policy. Asking the glasses to identify something can therefore create a separate processing record from simply taking a gallery photo. Cloud media and AI processing are related but not identical controls; check both the privacy switches and the specific AI features you use.

With Respond without “Hey Meta” enabled, the glasses can continue listening for a short period after a request. Ray-Ban states that if you start talking in the few seconds following a voice command, the glasses will record and process that audio. This is the main reason to disable the setting when minimizing unintended voice capture.

Sharing moves control to the destination
Ray-Ban documents direct sharing to Instagram and Facebook Stories and to messaging providers. Once you send a photo, video or message to another app or the internet, Meta says handling follows the destination’s rules. The destination account determines who can see a story or message, so changing a glasses setting cannot retract a copy that has already been delivered.
Use the physical controls first
Power the glasses down
- Find the physical power switch on the glasses.
- Slide it to the off position.
- Look for the red shutdown indication documented in the Ray-Ban FAQ before putting the glasses away.
Powering down is the clearest way to stop active camera, microphone and network functions. Do it before entering a meeting, changing clothes, visiting a confidential location or handing the glasses to another person. Software privacy switches are useful for normal use, but they are not a substitute for switching the hardware off when recording must not occur.
Do not cover or alter the capture LED
The front capture LED is a required bystander signal. Meta says, “The capture LED has no off switch,” and says the camera is disabled when people try to block or tamper with it. Covering the lamp can therefore stop the camera rather than make recording covert, and physical modification violates Meta’s guidelines.
The Texas Attorney General’s office has warned that a small indicator can be hidden in practice. Treat that warning as a reason to obtain consent, explain what the glasses can do and avoid recording where people reasonably expect privacy. The LED helps bystanders notice a capture; it is not proof that no other sensor or previously imported file exists.

Turn off Meta cloud and telemetry controls
Connect the glasses in the Meta AI app before changing these settings. Menu names can move slightly between app releases, but the relevant controls are grouped under Glasses privacy.
- Open the Meta AI app and connect the glasses.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Choose Glasses privacy.
- Switch Cloud media off.
- Switch Share additional data off.
- Close and reopen the page to confirm both switches remain off.
What Share additional data changes
Android Central describes this control as limiting sharing about how often and how well the device is used. It is telemetry, not the same thing as a camera file. Turning it off reduces additional usage reporting while leaving basic account, connectivity and feature operation requirements in place.
If a switch is missing
- Update the Meta AI app and the glasses firmware, then reconnect the glasses.
- Confirm that the correct pair is selected if the account has more than one device.
- Check whether your country or hardware generation exposes the feature; some controls are region- or version-dependent.
- Use the app’s privacy or help page for the exact current label rather than assuming that a similarly named switch has the same scope.
Reduce accidental voice recording
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Go to Meta AI.
- Open Hey Meta preferences.
- Turn Respond without “Hey Meta” off.
- After saving, start requests with “Hey Meta” and pause before speaking anything sensitive.
When the setting is on, a short post-command listening window can record and process continued speech. Turning it off does not make the microphone disappear; it removes that extra always-ready response behavior. For a conversation that must not be captured, use the physical power switch.

Open the app’s voice-activity log and inspect the interactions shown there. Where the current app version provides deletion controls, remove entries you no longer want retained. The presence, date range and bulk-delete options of this log can differ by account and app release, so verify that the entry has actually disappeared after deletion.

Control imports, backups and outgoing shares
Audit the phone copy after every import
- Open the phone gallery immediately after importing media.
- Delete captures that you did not intend to keep.
- Check the gallery’s trash or recently deleted area and empty it if permanent removal is required.
- Review automatic photo backup and shared-album settings separately; those services can retain a copy after the local file is deleted.
Cloud-photo backups are controlled by the phone and their provider, not by the Cloud media switch in the Meta AI app. A privacy review is incomplete until you check both locations.
Disconnect destinations you do not use
Remove unused Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp or phone integrations from the glasses’ connected-services settings. This reduces the chance of choosing the wrong destination in a voice command or sharing screen. It does not erase messages or stories that have already been sent; delete those from the destination service as well, subject to that service’s retention rules.
Check audience settings before sharing
For Stories, the destination account controls the audience. Review who can see the story before tapping share, especially when several accounts are connected. Messaging recipients can forward or save a file, so a successful deletion from your sent view is not a guarantee that every recipient copy is gone.

There is no single retention period that applies to every item in this table. A 30-day cloud-media description should not be read as a 30-day limit for voice activity, AI-processed images, imported phone files or account records.

Can people tell when the glasses are recording?
They can often see the front capture LED, which is designed as a bystander signal and cannot be disabled through a supported setting. The wearer should also explain the recording capability when consent matters. However, visibility depends on distance, lighting, angle and whether the observer is paying attention. The Texas Attorney General’s warning that a small indicator can be hidden is a reminder not to treat the LED as a complete consent system.
Do not record in places where people expect privacy, and follow workplace, school, healthcare and local recording laws. If someone asks you to stop, switch the glasses off rather than relying on a software setting.
What “always enabled” means—and what it does not prove
The Texas Attorney General’s office has described Meta’s privacy policy as including an “always enabled” mode that can constantly process video for Meta AI. That is a government allegation or description, not proof that every model, firmware version or region operates identically. Check the mode and its explanation in your own app, and use the power switch when continuous sensing is unacceptable.

Even when a feature processes video continuously, processing is not automatically the same as saving a gallery file or sharing it publicly. Ask three separate questions: is the sensor active, is data transmitted or retained, and has anything been sent to another service? The controls in this guide address those questions separately.
Factory-reset before selling, gifting or returning the glasses
- Import any media you intentionally want to keep.
- Disconnect social accounts and remove the glasses from the Meta AI app.
- Use the app’s factory-reset command for the connected glasses.
- Wait for the reset to complete, then verify that the glasses no longer appear in your account.
- Power them off before handing them over.
Ray-Ban says a factory reset permanently erases captures and account associations on the glasses. It cannot erase files already imported to a phone, backed up, shared or retained by a destination service, so complete those separate clean-up steps first.
Choosing a more private type of smart glasses
If these controls do not fit your needs, compare glasses by privacy architecture rather than by camera resolution or assistant features.

No design feature removes the need for consent. A camera-free product may still collect voice, location, usage or account data, so read the device’s current privacy documentation before purchase.
