To stop Pandora immediately on a Samsung Galaxy, tap Pause in Pandora or use the media controls in the notification shade or on the lock screen. If you also want to close the app, open Recent Apps and swipe the Pandora card up. Those actions are different: pausing stops audio, while swiping away closes the recent app view. Sign-out and Samsung’s battery restrictions solve different problems and are only needed in specific situations.
The exact Samsung menu names vary by Galaxy model and One UI/Android version. When a path below does not match your phone, use the search field in Settings or open Pandora’s App info page and look for battery and background-use controls.
What “turn off Pandora” can mean
People use “turn off” for several separate actions. Choose the one that matches your goal instead of changing a setting that affects future playback.
| Goal | Action | What changes | What does not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop the song now | Tap Pause in Pandora or in an available Android media control | Current playback stops | Pandora remains open and you remain signed in |
| Remove Pandora from Recent Apps | Open Recent Apps and swipe Pandora up | The recent-app card is closed | The app stays installed; your account and downloaded content are not deleted |
| End the account session | Use Profile > Settings > Sign out in Pandora | Your account is signed out on the app | The app remains installed and playback controls are not changed on other devices |
| Limit future background activity | Change Pandora’s battery or sleeping-app setting in Samsung Settings | Background operation can be limited | It is not a dependable way to stop the song that is already playing |
| Stop listening later | Set Pandora’s Sleep Timer | Playback ends after 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes | Pandora is not signed out or uninstalled |
Pandora’s Android help treats pausing, exiting and signing out as different controls. Samsung likewise describes Recent Apps closure as a temporary close rather than a settings change.

Stop Pandora playback immediately
Pause from Pandora
- Open Pandora’s Now Playing screen.
- Tap the Pause control.
- Confirm that the play control changes to a resume/play symbol and that the elapsed time stops advancing.
Pandora says a paused app uses minimal data and battery. If your only objective is to stop music, pausing is normally sufficient; you do not need to force the app out of memory.
Use the notification shade
- Swipe down from the top of the Galaxy screen to open the notification shade. On some versions, swipe down a second time to expand it.
- Find Pandora’s media player card.
- Tap its pause button. If several media apps are open, select Pandora’s card first.
Android and Samsung layouts differ, so the media card may be above or below other notifications, and its icon style can change after an update. If no Pandora card is present, return to Pandora and pause there instead.
Use the lock screen or connected audio controls
When Pandora is playing, Samsung may show playback controls on the lock screen. Tap pause there without unlocking the phone. A paired headset, car system or speaker may also provide a pause button; use it if the phone’s controls are not visible. The control appears only when the accessory and current software expose media commands, so its absence does not mean Pandora cannot be paused.

Close Pandora from Recent Apps
Pandora’s official Android instructions say to exit by opening the Recent Apps menu, finding Pandora and swiping it up. Samsung’s navigation method depends on whether your Galaxy uses buttons or gestures.
- Open Recent Apps. With three-button navigation, tap the Recents button (usually the three-lines icon). With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom edge and hold briefly.
- Swipe left or right until you see the Pandora app card.
- Swipe the Pandora card upward, off the screen. This closes that recent app entry.
- Return to the Home screen by tapping Home or swiping up, depending on your navigation mode.
Swiping the card away does not uninstall Pandora, erase account information or remove downloads. It is a temporary close: you can open Pandora again from the app drawer whenever you want. If music continues after the card disappears, use the notification or lock-screen pause control; a connected accessory can also still be holding the active media session.
Restrict Pandora’s background activity on a Galaxy
Use battery and sleeping-app controls when you are addressing persistent background behavior, unexpected battery use or a desire to prevent Pandora from operating when you are not actively using it. These controls are broader than a pause command and can affect normal background playback.

Check Pandora’s per-app battery setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, choose Pandora, then look for Battery or Battery usage. On some Galaxy versions, open Settings > Battery first and then select background-usage controls.
- Review the available choices, which Samsung commonly presents as Unrestricted, Optimized and Restricted.
- Choose a restriction only if you want to limit background work. Read the warning before confirming.
Samsung notes that restricting a music app can prevent background music playback. Therefore, this setting is not a universal “stop now” button. It governs what Pandora may do later when it is not in the foreground.

Review Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps
Samsung’s Galaxy support documentation distinguishes Sleeping apps, Deep sleeping apps and Never sleeping apps. A sleeping app may run occasionally; a deep-sleeping app is more heavily limited and generally runs only when you open it; a never-sleeping entry is exempt from those limits. The labels and location differ by model and software release.
- In Settings, use search for sleeping apps, background usage limits or battery.
- Open the matching Battery or Device care page.
- Inspect Pandora’s list membership and remove or add it according to the background behavior you want.
- Test Pandora after changing the setting. A restriction may stop background playback or delay notifications.
If you cannot find a named menu, open Settings > Apps > Pandora and inspect the Battery section. Samsung explicitly warns that menu paths vary by device and software version.

Sign out when you want to end the session
Closing Recent Apps does not sign you out. To end the account session in Pandora, open Profile > Settings > Sign out, following Pandora’s Android guide. Signing out can require you to enter your credentials again the next time you listen, so use it for account or shared-device reasons rather than as a routine way to stop a song.
Do not clear Pandora’s app data merely to stop playback. Pandora lists data clearing as troubleshooting and warns that it can require another login. Pause or close the app instead unless you are deliberately resetting the app while troubleshooting a separate problem.

Schedule an automatic stop with Sleep Timer
For a listening session that should end after you fall asleep or finish a task, use Pandora’s Sleep Timer. Pandora documents four intervals: 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes.

- Open Pandora and go to the playback screen.
- Open the player’s timer or sleep-timer control.
- Select 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.
- Leave Pandora playing; it stops when the selected interval expires.
Pandora’s help also notes that its former in-app alarm is no longer available to Android users. Sleep Timer is the relevant scheduled-stop feature.
Troubleshoot common “Pandora won’t turn off” situations
The song is still playing after I swiped Pandora away
Swiping a card removes the app from Recent Apps; it is not the playback command. Pull down the notification shade and tap Pandora’s pause control, or use the lock-screen control. If a car, headset or speaker is connected, press its pause button as well.
I cannot find Pandora’s media notification
Open Pandora directly and pause from Now Playing. Media controls are conditional: they can disappear after a session ends, after a notification is dismissed, or when the current Android layout does not expose the player card. The absence of a card does not require changing battery settings.

Pandora stops whenever the screen turns off
Inspect Pandora’s battery setting and sleeping-app status. A Restricted or Deep sleeping configuration can block background music. Set the app to Optimized or remove the restriction if you need playback while the screen is off, then test again. The exact option names depend on your Galaxy model and software version.
Pandora keeps returning to the background
First pause playback. If the app repeatedly resumes or remains active, review background-use limits and any connected audio device. Background restrictions may reduce activity, but they can also interfere with legitimate playback, so change them only for that specific purpose.
The Settings path in these steps is different
Samsung publishes separate guidance for different regions and models, and menu labels change with software updates. Use the Settings search field for Pandora, battery, background usage or sleeping apps. Opening Pandora’s App info page is another reliable starting point.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Need silence right now? Tap Pause in Pandora, the notification shade or the lock screen.
- Want Pandora removed from the app switcher? Open Recent Apps and swipe its card up.
- Sharing the phone or ending access? Use Profile > Settings > Sign out.
- Trying to control future background behavior? Review Battery, Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps in Samsung Settings, with the model/version caveat.
- Want playback to end later? Choose Pandora Sleep Timer: 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.
