Outlook can alter text for several different reasons: AutoCorrect may replace a word, text predictions may suggest a completion, automatic formatting may change punctuation or capitalization, or proofing may add a colored underline. The fix depends on whether you use new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, or Outlook for Mac. Identify the behavior first, then change only the control responsible for it.
Identify what Outlook is doing before changing a setting
A word that changes immediately after you type is usually an AutoCorrect substitution. A gray or lightly colored completion that appears ahead of the cursor is a text prediction. A word that stays intact but gains a red or blue underline is being flagged by spelling or grammar tools. Capital letters, quotation marks, dashes, and other punctuation can also be changed by automatic formatting rules.
| What you see | Likely feature | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| A completed word is replaced as you type | AutoCorrect or text replacement | AutoCorrect settings |
| A suggested word or phrase appears before you finish | Text predictions | Smart suggestions or Text Predictions |
| The first letter changes to uppercase, or punctuation is altered | Auto-capitalization or auto-formatting | Editor settings or Spelling & Typing |
| A colored underline appears but the word is not replaced | Spelling or grammar checking | Proofing or spelling and grammar settings |
The menu names are not shared across every Outlook edition. The steps below are grouped by client so you do not disable the wrong feature.
New Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web
Turn off automatic replacements and capitalization
- Open a new message or a reply.
- On the message ribbon, select Editor, then choose Editor Settings.
- Turn off the AutoCorrect and automatic-capitalization option that is changing your text.
- If punctuation or spacing is being reformatted, review the auto-format options in the same Editor settings panel and disable the specific rule rather than every editor feature.
Microsoft currently documents these AutoCorrect and automatic-capitalization controls as available only for English in new Outlook and Outlook on the web. If you use another authoring language, the switch may not appear or may not control that language’s corrections. Check the message language and the Outlook client before concluding that the setting is missing.

Disable text predictions separately
Predictions are suggestions, not the same replacement mechanism as AutoCorrect. To remove them, open Settings > Mail > Smart suggestions and clear Text predictions. Outlook on the web presents Suggested replies as a separate setting; leave that option alone if only word completions are a problem.
You can dismiss one prediction without changing the global setting by continuing to type. The suggestion should disappear as the text no longer matches it. Use the Smart suggestions setting when you want predictions disabled for future messages.
If the Editor switch is unavailable
- Confirm that you are in new Outlook or Outlook on the web, not classic Outlook for Windows. Their settings are different.
- Check the language used for the message. The documented AutoCorrect controls in these clients are currently limited to English.
- Make sure you opened a compose window; Editor controls may not be shown in a read-only message.
- If you need to remove one exact replacement entry rather than disable the feature, use a supported desktop Outlook route described below. Microsoft documents list-management limitations in the web client.
Classic Outlook for Windows
Stop all AutoCorrect substitutions
- Select File in the Outlook window.
- Choose Options, then Mail.
- Select Editor Options, open Proofing, and choose AutoCorrect Options.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, clear Replace text as you type.
- Select OK to close each dialog.
This switch controls automatic replacement while you type. It does not turn off spell-check underlines or every grammar feature; those are controlled separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Remove only one unwanted substitution
If most AutoCorrect behavior is useful, keep Replace text as you type enabled and delete only the offending entry.
- Return to File > Options > Mail > Editor Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, locate the unwanted text in the Replace list.
- Select the entry, choose Delete, and confirm with OK.
AutoCorrect entries are shared by supported Office programs. Deleting an entry from Outlook can therefore change replacements in other Office applications that use the same AutoCorrect list. Remove an entry only when that cross-application effect is acceptable.
Turn off predictive completions
- In Outlook, select File > Options > Mail.
- Clear Show text predictions while typing.
- Select OK.
This setting is independent of the AutoCorrect checkbox. If a word is being replaced after you finish it, change AutoCorrect; if Outlook merely offers a completion, change text predictions.
Outlook for Mac
Use Spelling & Typing settings in current Outlook for Mac
- Open the Outlook menu and select Settings.
- Choose Spelling & Typing.
- Under Automatic Corrections and Typing Substitutions, turn off the control responsible for the change: Correct Spelling Automatically, Smart Quotes, Smart Dashes, or Text Replacement.
- For predictive completions, turn off Show Text Predictions in the same settings area.
Use the narrowest switch that solves the problem. For example, disabling Smart Quotes will not stop a misspelled word from being corrected, and disabling Text Replacement will not remove a spelling underline.

Legacy Outlook for Mac
Some older Mac builds expose the replacement control under Outlook > Settings > AutoCorrect. Clear Replace text as you type, then close the settings window. If your installation shows the newer Spelling & Typing pane, use that pane instead.
Limits on editing individual entries
Microsoft states that new Outlook for Mac does not support adding or removing individual AutoCorrect entries. Outlook on the web also supports AutoCorrect without allowing the AutoCorrect list to be edited. When one specific substitution must be deleted and your Mac build does not provide list editing, use a supported desktop Outlook for Windows route where available, or disable text replacement for the affected typing session.
When the problem is an underline, not a changed word
A colored underline is proofing feedback. It does not prove that AutoCorrect replaced anything. If the text remains exactly as typed and only an alert appears, adjust spelling or grammar checking instead of AutoCorrect.
Classic Outlook for Windows proofing controls
- Open File > Options > Mail.
- Select Spelling and Autocorrect.
- Change Check spelling as you type or the available grammar controls.
- Apply the change and return to the message.
Turning off checking suppresses automatic proofing indicators; it does not remove replacement entries or prediction suggestions.
Mac spelling and grammar controls
In Outlook for Mac, spelling and grammar checking are separate from the automatic-correction switches in Outlook > Settings > Spelling & Typing. Change the checking controls when you want to hide proofing marks while retaining (or separately disabling) text substitutions.
Choose the smallest change that matches your goal
| Your goal | New Outlook or web | Classic Outlook for Windows | Outlook for Mac |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prevent words from being replaced | Editor > Editor Settings; disable AutoCorrect or the relevant automatic-correction option | File > Options > Mail > Editor Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options; clear Replace text as you type | Outlook > Settings > Spelling & Typing; disable the relevant automatic-correction or Text Replacement option |
| Remove one replacement only | Individual list editing is not documented for the web client | Delete the entry from the AutoCorrect Replace list | Individual entry editing is not supported in new Outlook for Mac |
| Hide predictive completions | Settings > Mail > Smart suggestions; clear Text predictions | File > Options > Mail; clear Show text predictions while typing | Outlook > Settings > Spelling & Typing; turn off Show Text Predictions |
| Stop capitalization or punctuation changes | Review automatic-capitalization and auto-format options in Editor Settings | Use the AutoCorrect and formatting options in Editor Options | Disable the affected option, such as Smart Quotes or Smart Dashes |
| Remove colored spelling or grammar marks | Use the proofing controls available for the compose language | File > Options > Mail > Spelling and Autocorrect | Use the spelling and grammar controls in Spelling & Typing |
Use a quick diagnostic test before disabling anything
When the symptom is unclear, open a fresh compose window and type a distinctive test phrase containing an intentional misspelling, an abbreviation, quotation marks, and a dash. Watch the exact moment each change occurs. A replacement that happens as soon as a space or punctuation mark is entered points to AutoCorrect or Text Replacement. A faint completion that remains ahead of the cursor is a prediction. A line beneath unchanged text is proofing feedback. If only the first character of a sentence changes, focus on automatic capitalization rather than the replacement list.
Test one control at a time and repeat the same phrase after each change. This avoids turning off several useful features when only one rule is responsible. If the phrase behaves differently in a desktop draft and a browser draft, treat those as separate clients and use the corresponding settings path.

Understand the scope of each change
The broadest change is clearing the master replacement switch. It prevents all automatic substitutions in that client, but it also removes helpful fixes. Deleting one entry is more precise, although classic Outlook for Windows shares its AutoCorrect list with other supported Office programs. A deletion can therefore change behavior in those programs as well. Predictions, capitalization, smart punctuation, and proofing marks have their own controls, so changing one does not reliably affect the others.
Recommended Free Tools
On the web and in new Outlook for Mac, Microsoft documents limitations on editing individual AutoCorrect entries. If list management is essential, a supported desktop Outlook for Windows installation may be required. Otherwise, disable the relevant replacement feature and restore it after the message is complete.
Do you need a product or repair utility?
No. Microsoft’s documented remedy is a software setting in Outlook. An accessory, replacement part, repair tool, or printed manual will not change the AutoCorrect list or prediction controls. Use the built-in menus first; purchasing a physical product is not necessary for this problem.
Troubleshoot corrections that continue after you change a setting
Verify the Outlook edition first
The most common mistake is following classic Outlook instructions in new Outlook, or changing a web setting while composing in a desktop application. Look at the window and menus you are actually using, then follow only that client’s section. A setting changed in one client may not expose the same control in another.
Check whether the behavior is replacement, prediction, or proofing
Type a distinctive word slowly and watch what happens. If the completed text is replaced, revisit AutoCorrect or Text Replacement. If a suggestion appears but the typed text stays unchanged, revisit Text predictions. If only an underline appears, revisit spelling and grammar checking. This simple observation prevents disabling useful features unnecessarily.
Check language availability in new Outlook and the web
If Editor does not show AutoCorrect or capitalization controls, check the message language and the documented English-only availability for these features. The absence of a toggle can be a client or language limitation rather than a failed setting.
Decide whether the change should be global or limited to one entry
Clearing the general replacement switch stops every automatic substitution. Deleting a single AutoCorrect entry preserves the rest of the list, but in classic Outlook for Windows the list is shared with other supported Office programs. Choose the broader change only when you accept that scope.

Do not confuse predictions with replacements
Predictions are designed to be dismissed as you continue typing. They can remain visible even when AutoCorrect is disabled, because they use a separate control. Conversely, turning off predictions will not stop a replacement that is already in the AutoCorrect list.
Recheck after reopening the compose window
After applying a setting, close the message draft or start a new message and repeat the same typing test. This verifies that the control applies to the compose experience you are using. If the behavior changes only in one client, use that client’s settings rather than assuming the account-wide behavior is identical everywhere.

Restore Outlook’s normal corrections later
Every change is reversible. Re-enable Replace text as you type, the relevant Editor automatic-correction switch, Text Replacement, or Text Predictions in the same path used to disable it. If you deleted an individual AutoCorrect entry in classic Outlook for Windows, it must be added again manually; disabling the master switch does not remove entries from the list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important scope and availability notes
- Menu labels can change between Outlook releases, so use the closest matching label shown in your installation.
- New Outlook and Outlook on the web currently document AutoCorrect and automatic-capitalization controls for English only.
- Outlook on the web and new Outlook for Mac document limitations on editing individual AutoCorrect entries.
- Classic Outlook for Windows shares its AutoCorrect list with other supported Office programs.
- Spelling and grammar indicators are proofing feedback, not evidence that a word was substituted.
- Microsoft Support pages covering these controls were current on October 13, 2026; feature availability and menu wording can change in later builds.
The practical sequence is therefore: identify the Outlook client, classify the symptom, change the matching control, and test in a fresh message. That approach stops unwanted changes while preserving the corrections and proofing features you still want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Outlook change a word after I press Space?
That timing usually indicates AutoCorrect or Text Replacement. In classic Outlook for Windows, clear Replace text as you type or delete the specific entry from the AutoCorrect Replace list. In new Outlook, the web client, or Mac, use the corresponding Editor or Spelling & Typing control.
How do I stop Outlook from suggesting words without disabling spelling checks?
Turn off text predictions only. In new Outlook or Outlook on the web, go to Settings > Mail > Smart suggestions and clear Text predictions. In classic Windows Outlook, clear Show text predictions while typing. Mac users can turn off Show Text Predictions in Spelling & Typing.

Why can’t I find AutoCorrect in Outlook on the web?
The web client exposes AutoCorrect through Editor > Editor Settings while composing, and Microsoft documents the current AutoCorrect and capitalization controls as English-only. The web client also does not provide editing of individual AutoCorrect list entries.
What if Outlook changes quotation marks or dashes instead of words?
That is automatic formatting or smart punctuation. New Outlook and the web provide auto-format options in Editor Settings. On Mac, turn off Smart Quotes or Smart Dashes under Outlook > Settings > Spelling & Typing.
How do I remove red or blue lines under words?
An underline is proofing feedback, not necessarily a replacement. In classic Windows Outlook, open File > Options > Mail > Spelling and Autocorrect and change Check spelling as you type or the grammar controls. Mac has separate spelling and grammar controls in Spelling & Typing.
Can I edit individual AutoCorrect entries in new Outlook for Mac?
Microsoft documents that new Outlook for Mac does not support adding or removing individual AutoCorrect entries. You can disable the relevant automatic-correction or Text Replacement option, or use a supported desktop Outlook for Windows route when precise list editing is required.
Will disabling AutoCorrect also disable text predictions?
No. AutoCorrect replacements and text predictions are separate features. A word can still be suggested after AutoCorrect is disabled, and turning off predictions will not remove an existing AutoCorrect substitution.
Do I need to buy a tool or accessory to stop Outlook corrections?
No. The fix is a built-in Outlook setting. Physical accessories, replacement parts, repair tools, and printed manuals do not alter AutoCorrect, prediction, formatting, or proofing behavior.
How can I turn the corrections back on?
Return to the same settings path and re-enable the switch you changed: Replace text as you type, an Editor automatic-correction option, Text Replacement, or Text Predictions. A deleted AutoCorrect entry must be added again manually.
