Apache running at the same time as MySQL does not, by itself, prove Apache caused the crash. Stop guessing and establish the failure class: confirm that mysqld actually exits, match the exit time with MySQL, kernel, service-manager and Apache logs, then fix the condition those records show. The usual classes are memory pressure, full disks or quotas, InnoDB file or permission errors, invalid size limits, file-descriptor exhaustion, and a repeatable query.
Start by proving what failed
A browser error, a dropped connection or a failed application request can occur while the database server remains healthy. Conversely, a service can restart so quickly that an application only reports a generic database error. Treat those as different incidents.
Check whether the server process died
Run the version check against the local server and note the reported uptime:
mysqladmin version
Run it once when the service is healthy and again after the next incident. A reset uptime indicates that the server restarted. If uptime is unchanged, investigate the client, connection pool, Apache request path or network instead of treating the event as a MySQL crash.

Then inspect the MySQL error log. The exact path depends on the package and operating system; use the path configured for the active instance rather than assuming a distribution default. Look for the final messages before termination, a stack trace, InnoDB errors, operating-system error numbers, and any message that says the server was killed or could not open a file.
Check the service manager’s view
On a systemd host, replace the unit name with the one installed on your system (mysqld or mysql):
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo systemctl status mysqld
sudo journalctl -u mysqld --since "15 minutes ago"
A clean, intentional stop looks different from a process killed by the kernel, a failed restart, or a startup abort during InnoDB recovery. Save the timestamps; they are the key to correlating all other logs.
Build a timeline instead of blaming Apache
Record the first failed request, the moment mysqld exited, the service restart, and the first successful connection afterward. Compare that window with Apache’s error and access logs and with host-level events. Apache may increase concurrency and total resource demand, but “Apache was running” is not a diagnosis.
What to collect at the crash time
- MySQL’s error-log lines immediately before and after the failure.
- The service-manager status and journal entries for the same minute.
- Kernel messages, especially out-of-memory (OOM) events or storage I/O errors.
- Available RAM and swap, disk space, inode usage and any quota counters.
- The effective open-file limit for the MySQL service.
- Apache’s request volume and error messages, including whether a traffic burst coincided with the database exit.
Do not infer causation from simultaneity. If the kernel records an OOM kill naming mysqld, the immediate failure class is memory pressure. If MySQL reports a write failure while the filesystem is full, changing Apache worker settings will not repair that filesystem.
Test for memory pressure and swap exhaustion
Apache workers, MySQL buffers, connection-related allocations and the operating system all draw from the same host resources. Under a traffic burst, their combined demand can exceed physical memory and swap. The kernel may then terminate a process; the victim is not necessarily the service that consumed the most memory.

Confirm an OOM event
Inspect kernel and service logs around the recorded timestamp. Search for terms such as “out of memory,” “OOM killer,” “killed process,” or a cgroup memory limit. A message naming mysqld establishes that the kernel killed it; a message naming Apache establishes a different failure boundary.
Also check current and historical memory and swap use. A host with free memory after the restart can still have suffered a short-lived peak. Capture several readings during a representative Apache load rather than relying on one idle snapshot.
Reduce demand only after measuring
If OOM evidence is present, lower the aggregate peak: reduce Apache concurrency or per-process memory demand, reduce MySQL allocations that are actually consuming memory, or move one service to a host with more capacity. Change one class of setting at a time and repeat the same workload. There is no universal Apache worker limit or MySQL buffer-pool percentage that is safe for every host; the correct values depend on observed peaks, connection counts and the rest of the workload.
Do not “fix” a disk error by reducing memory, and do not raise arbitrary limits when the kernel shows no memory event. A change that removes the symptom under light traffic but leaves no headroom under peak traffic is not a durable fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRule out disks, inodes and quotas
MySQL can terminate or fail to start when it cannot create, extend, read or flush required files. Check the filesystem that contains the data directory and the filesystem that contains MySQL’s temporary or log files.
Check capacity and quotas
df -h
df -i
The first command checks block capacity; the second checks inode exhaustion. A filesystem can report free gigabytes while having no inodes left for new files. If quotas are enabled, inspect the account or project quota used by the MySQL data directory. The official troubleshooting guidance specifically says to ensure the disk is not full and that no disk quota is being exceeded.

Correlate the result with the error log’s operating-system error. Repair the capacity problem, remove only files you have positively identified as disposable, or expand the filesystem according to your platform’s procedures. Never delete database files merely to make a failed start proceed.
Check read and write access
Verify that the configured data directory and redo or log directories exist and that the account running mysqld can read and write them. A package upgrade, manual copy or ownership change can leave files owned by the wrong account. Correct ownership and permissions using the distribution’s documented service account and preserve restrictive permissions; do not make the entire data directory world-writable.
Check the option file and InnoDB limits
A server can be pointed at a different configuration than the one you edited. Confirm which option files the active service loads and verify the values for the data directory, InnoDB data files, redo logs and any size-related settings. Check the service unit, included configuration directories and command-line arguments rather than assuming a single global file is authoritative.
Look for hard size limits
InnoDB’s innodb_data_file_path can impose a hard limit. If the data files reach that limit, inserts or startup operations can fail even when the underlying filesystem still has free space. The error log should be the deciding evidence. Plan any capacity change using MySQL’s documented procedure for the installed release; do not edit or rename data files by hand.
Verify directory consistency
- The configured data and log directories exist on the mounted filesystems you expect.
- The MySQL service account can traverse every parent directory and write required files.
- The option file loaded by the service contains the values you intended.
- The filesystem is mounted read-write and has sufficient blocks, inodes and quota.
- InnoDB file-path limits are compatible with the database’s current size.
Investigate a reproducible query
If resource, storage and permission checks do not explain the exit, look for a query-triggered failure. Oracle’s MySQL 8.0 troubleshooting guidance says that about 95% of bugs are related to a particular query. That figure is a statement in the manual, not a measurement of your server, but it explains why the last query before a restart is valuable evidence.
Temporarily capture the final statement
Enable the general query log only for a controlled diagnostic window; it can add substantial I/O and storage demand on a busy server. Reproduce the failure, identify the final statement before termination, and disable the log promptly. Protect the captured file because query text may contain sensitive values.

Compare the statement with the error-log stack trace and test it against a copy or a narrowly scoped environment when possible. Reduce it to the smallest reproducible case: schema elements, data characteristics, SQL text and execution conditions required to trigger the fault. A minimal case is more useful for a bug report than an entire production workload.
Separate ordinary startup failures from InnoDB recovery
After an unclean exit, InnoDB may perform crash recovery during startup. A server that stops while recovery is running needs recovery-specific handling, not the same steps used for a permissions or quota failure. Read the startup messages carefully and identify whether recovery is progressing, repeating, or aborting on a particular file or operation.
Do not delete ibdata, redo-log or .ibd files as a generic remedy. Those files contain database state. MySQL’s guidance limits deletion to narrowly defined initialization failures and warns that removing them can destroy data. Preserve a copy, follow the recovery procedure for your exact release, and use backups or a recovery environment before attempting any destructive operation.
Fix file-descriptor limits under systemd
High Apache concurrency can increase the number of sockets and database connections in use. If MySQL logs “too many open files,” or the effective service limit is demonstrably too low, change the service limit rather than guessing at database memory settings.

[Service]
LimitNOFILE=65535
# Set LimitCore only if core dumps are part of your approved diagnostic plan.
# LimitCore=infinity
The number above is an example of a service limit, not a universal requirement. Select a value that accommodates measured peak descriptors and your operating system’s policy. Environment variables required by the service can also belong in this drop-in.
Reload and verify
- Save the drop-in with ownership and permissions appropriate for system configuration.
- Reload systemd:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Restart the correct unit:
sudo systemctl restart mysqld(ormysql). - Inspect the effective unit settings and confirm the running process received the intended limit.
- Repeat the workload and watch both the MySQL error log and host descriptor counters.
Whenever you create or change override.conf, systemd must be reloaded before the service is restarted. Editing a vendor unit directly is less persistent because package upgrades can replace it; a drop-in is designed to survive those upgrades.

Choose the remedy that matches the evidence
| Confirmed failure class | Primary remedy | Data risk and reversibility | Effect on Apache capacity | Persistence and verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kernel OOM or cgroup memory kill | Reduce measured aggregate Apache and MySQL demand, or add capacity | Configuration changes are reversible; avoid killing processes as a “fix” | Reducing Apache concurrency can lower peak request capacity | Retest under representative concurrency and monitor memory, swap and OOM logs |
| Disk, inode or quota exhaustion | Repair capacity, inode or quota condition and confirm writable mounts | Filesystem cleanup can be risky; preserve database files | No direct effect once storage is healthy | Recheck capacity and confirm MySQL can create and flush required files |
| Permission or wrong option-file path | Correct service-account access and the configuration actually loaded | Reversible when documented; incorrect ownership changes can expose data | No direct effect | Restart and verify the active paths and permissions in logs |
| InnoDB hard size limit | Plan a documented capacity change for the installed MySQL release | Potentially high data risk; never improvise by deleting files | No direct effect | Confirm the new limit and successful writes after a controlled test |
| File-descriptor exhaustion | Raise the systemd service limit when measurements justify it | Drop-in changes are reversible | Usually preserves Apache capacity, subject to host-wide limits | Reload systemd, restart MySQL and verify the effective limit |
| Repeatable query or server bug | Minimize the SQL case, mitigate the workload and prepare a complete bug report | Query changes are reversible; test away from production first | May require temporarily reducing request concurrency | Capture the same statement and confirm whether the crash reproduces |
Run a controlled retest
After one evidence-based change, repeat the traffic pattern that previously failed. Keep the observation window long enough to include the same concurrency burst, query mix and elapsed time. Record:
- MySQL uptime before and after the test.
- Peak memory, swap, disk, inode, quota and open-file use.
- Apache concurrency and error counts.
- MySQL error-log messages and service-manager exit status.
- The exact configuration change and its rollback method.
A successful restart is not proof that the cause is fixed. The change is credible only when the diagnosed signal disappears under the triggering workload without introducing a new limit, data error or unacceptable loss of Apache capacity.
Common mistakes that make crashes harder to solve
- Assuming correlation is causation. Apache activity can expose a weakness without being the component that failed.
- Checking only application logs. They often show the symptom; the MySQL error log and host logs identify the failure class.
- Changing several limits at once. You lose the ability to tell which change mattered and can hide a storage or query fault.
- Using idle measurements. Short memory, descriptor or disk peaks can disappear before you inspect the host.
- Editing the wrong configuration. The running service may load an included file or a different option file than the one you opened.
- Deleting InnoDB files to force startup. Database files contain state; deletion is not a general recovery technique.
- Leaving the general query log enabled. Use it briefly, monitor its storage impact and disable it after capturing the reproducible event.
When to escalate
Escalate to the package or database maintainers when you can provide a precise failure boundary, timestamps, the relevant MySQL and host-log excerpts, the server version, the loaded configuration, the operating-system details, and a minimal reproducible query or workload. Include whether the event survives a controlled test with storage, permissions, memory and service limits verified. That evidence is far more actionable than a report that says only “MySQL crashes whenever Apache runs.”
A compact decision path
- Use
mysqladmin versionto establish whethermysqldactually restarted. - Read the MySQL error log and service-manager journal at the exact failure time.
- Check kernel OOM messages, RAM and swap, disk blocks, inodes, quotas and open-file limits.
- Verify InnoDB directories, permissions, loaded option files and hard size limits.
- If no infrastructure cause is proven, capture the final query during a short, controlled general-log window and minimize the trigger.
- Apply one remedy matched to the confirmed class, reload or restart as required, and retest under representative Apache concurrency.
The procedures and cautions above align with MySQL 8.0 documentation. Service names, log paths, package defaults and systemd behavior vary by distribution and MySQL release, so substitute the values used by the affected host while preserving the diagnostic order.
