If music starts as soon as your phone connects to the car, turn off Android Auto’s media auto-start or resume control first. If that does not stop it, check whether the music app allows connected devices to start playback and whether the car’s Bluetooth system is sending a play command. The right fix depends on what event starts the music.

Turn off Android Auto’s media auto-start or resume setting

On your phone, open Android Auto settings and look for a setting about automatically starting or resuming music or media. Turn it off, then reconnect to the car and check whether playback still starts. The exact wording and location can differ by Android version, phone manufacturer, and Android Auto version.

Google’s Android Auto help explains how to listen to music and podcasts through a car’s speakers, but it does not give a universal menu path for disabling autoplay. The setting names and paths discussed in Google-hosted community threads are user guidance, not a current official instruction for every phone.

Check whether the music app lets the car start playback

YouTube Music

If you use YouTube Music, open the app’s playback settings and look for “Allow external devices to start playback.” A YouTube Music Community answer recommends turning this off when a connected device starts playback. Check the current app interface, since labels and availability may change. This is community guidance rather than a guaranteed fix.

Google’s YouTube Music help says to sign in to the YouTube Music app and then select the Music tab in Android Auto to access the service. That setup guidance does not establish that a subscription is needed to disable auto-start.

Spotify or another music app

Start with Android Auto’s media auto-start or resume setting. No current official Spotify-specific setting for preventing Android Auto or a car from resuming playback is established here, so avoid relying on a menu path that may not exist in your app version. Check your app’s current settings for controls related to external devices or connected-car playback, but do not assume that a queue autoplay control affects playback triggered by the car.

Find out whether Bluetooth or Android Auto triggers playback

Test the timing: does music start as soon as the phone connects to the car’s Bluetooth, before Android Auto appears, or only when Android Auto launches? Some community answers report that a car system can send a play command when Bluetooth connects. If playback starts at that point, check the vehicle’s audio or Bluetooth settings and consult its owner’s manual for model-specific controls. There is no universal vehicle menu path.

Google’s Android Auto help describes media playback through car speakers and gives voice-command examples such as playing a playlist on Spotify or an artist on YouTube Music. These are usage instructions, not a troubleshooting guide for stopping playback on connection.

Match the setting to the behavior

  • Playback starts when Android Auto opens: Check Android Auto’s media auto-start or resume setting.
  • Playback starts as soon as Bluetooth connects: Check the app’s external-device playback control and the car’s Bluetooth behavior.
  • Playback continues with more songs after you start one: That may be queue autoplay within the app, a different behavior from playback starting when the car connects. Check the app’s queue or autoplay controls; changing those may not prevent a connection-triggered play command.
  • The music app appears in Android Auto but does not play until you choose it: That is app access, not necessarily autoplay. Google says compatible media apps should be used and signed in on the phone before Android Auto starts.

Change one relevant setting at a time, reconnect, and observe when playback begins. This helps distinguish Android Auto resuming a media session from an app responding to an external device or a car issuing a play command.

What not to rely on

Removing a music app from the Android Auto launcher has been mentioned as a workaround for app visibility, but the available community evidence does not establish it as a reliable way to prevent playback. A cable, adapter, or other hardware is not established as necessary to fix this settings issue.
