The most precise fix is to change the offending app’s alert locations: open Settings > Notifications, tap the app, and turn off Lock Screen. The notification can still go to Notification Center or appear as a banner unless you change those options too. If you want to stop the app completely, turn off Allow Notifications.
If the alert may remain visible but its message must stay private, change Show Previews to When Unlocked or Never. For recurring interruptions, use Scheduled Summary or Focus; for a one-off interruption, mute the alert directly from the Lock Screen.
Choose the result you want
“Stop notifications from interrupting my Lock Screen” can mean several different things. Decide whether you want to remove an alert, hide its content, delay it, silence notifications only during certain activities, or simply make a crowded screen easier to scan.

Remove one app’s notifications from the Lock Screen
This is the best choice when one app is responsible for the interruptions but you still want to receive its alerts elsewhere. It is narrower than switching off all notifications, so reminders, messages, or updates from other apps continue normally.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Under Notification Style, tap the app you want to change.
- In the Alerts section, turn off Lock Screen.
- Leave Notification Center or Banners enabled if you still want those delivery methods. The available locations can vary by app.
Turning off Lock Screen does not erase the notification or prevent the app from sending it. It changes where the alert is shown. To stop that app’s notifications altogether, use the same screen and turn off Allow Notifications. That removes the app’s notification permission until you enable it again.

Lock Screen versus Notification Center and banners
These are separate delivery locations. A notification can be absent from the Lock Screen yet remain in Notification Center, or it can appear as a banner while you are actively using the phone. If you want the app to be quiet everywhere, disable Allow Notifications. If you only want the Lock Screen clean, leave the other locations enabled and check them when convenient.
Check the app’s own notification categories
Some apps divide alerts into categories such as direct messages, promotions, reminders, or activity updates. If the app exposes category controls on its notification settings page, disable only the categories that interrupt you and leave important ones enabled. The exact categories and controls are app-specific, so an app may offer fewer choices than another. A category setting is useful when the app itself is noisy but a particular type of alert remains valuable.
Hide notification previews while keeping alerts
Turning off Lock Screen alerts and hiding previews solve different problems. A preview setting conceals the text inside an alert; it does not stop the alert itself from arriving. Someone looking at the Lock Screen may still see that an app has sent a notification, even if the message body is hidden.
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Tap Show Previews to change the general behavior, or open an individual app’s notification settings and use its preview control when available.
- Choose When Unlocked to reveal contents only after the iPhone is unlocked, or choose Never to keep notification contents hidden.
Always shows the contents before unlocking. Use it only if people near the phone can see the Lock Screen and that exposure is acceptable. Not every app supports notification previews, so an app may not display this control or may show a limited form of content.
Choose When Unlocked when you want to identify the notification quickly after authenticating. Choose Never when even an unlocked preview should remain unavailable in the notification surface. Neither option prevents sounds, banners, or the notification badge by itself; those are controlled separately.
Mute an app for an hour or for the day
When an app suddenly becomes noisy, you can act on its current alert without opening Settings. This is useful for a temporary burst of messages, a promotion that will soon end, or a meeting during which you do not want to reconfigure permanent settings.
- On the Lock Screen, swipe left on the notification or its notification group.
- Tap Options.
- Select the offered one-hour mute or the option to mute for today.
During the mute period, Apple says the app’s notifications are delivered directly to Notification Center. They do not appear on the Lock Screen, play a sound, light the screen, or present a banner. This is temporary; it does not change the app’s permanent notification settings.
The command applies to the app represented by the alert, not to every app on the phone. If several apps are interrupting you, mute each one or use a Focus for a broader rule. The available command can depend on the notification or its group, so swipe the group itself if an individual alert does not expose the expected options.

Restore a muted app
To resume normal delivery before the mute expires, open the muted notification in Notification Center, swipe left, tap Options, and choose Unmute when that option is offered. If you do not restore it manually, the one-hour or today limit controls when normal delivery returns. Once unmuted, the app follows its regular Lock Screen, banner, sound, and preview settings again.
Batch non-urgent alerts with Scheduled Summary
Scheduled Summary is useful when you want selected apps to notify you, but not at the moment each alert arrives. You choose one or more delivery times and decide which apps are included. It is a delivery-timing control, not a permanent block.
- Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.
- Turn on Scheduled Summary.
- Set the summary time or times that fit your routine.
- Select the apps whose notifications should be batched.
- For an included app, choose Scheduled Summary rather than Immediate Delivery when its Notification Delivery controls offer that choice.
Notifications from included apps wait for the selected summary time instead of arriving immediately. This is different from disabling Lock Screen alerts: the delivery itself is delayed, not merely moved to another alert location. At the selected time, the accumulated notifications can be presented together, so choose times when you are prepared to review them.
Use Immediate Delivery for apps whose alerts are time-sensitive and Scheduled Summary for lower-priority updates. You can revise the app selection and times whenever your routine changes. If you want a selected app delayed and also kept off the Lock Screen, combine Scheduled Summary with that app’s Lock Screen alert-location setting.
If an app is missing from the list
Apple notes that Allow Notifications may need to be enabled before an app can be added to Scheduled Summary. Return to Settings > Notifications, open the app, enable its notifications, and then check the Scheduled Summary app list again. You can still turn off its Lock Screen location separately if you do not want the eventual summary item shown there.
If the app appears in the list but still arrives immediately, open its notification settings and look for the Notification Delivery choice. Select Scheduled Summary, not Immediate Delivery. Also confirm that the summary feature is on and that at least one delivery time is configured.

Use Focus to silence notifications by time or activity
Focus is the broadest option when the right behavior depends on what you are doing. You can silence notifications, allow only selected people and apps, decide whether silenced alerts appear on the Lock Screen, and set automatic schedules. Apple describes Focus as a feature that helps you concentrate by minimizing distractions.
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Choose an existing Focus such as Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, or Sleep, or create another Focus.
- Configure the people and apps that are allowed to notify you.
- Open the Focus’s Options and choose the Lock Screen behavior for silenced notifications.
- Add a schedule so the Focus activates automatically at a time, location, or other offered trigger.
Allow-listing is more selective than silencing everything: chosen contacts and apps can continue to alert you while other notifications are suppressed. A Focus can also be activated manually whenever you need it. If your aim is a completely quiet Lock Screen, review both the allowed-app list and the option controlling whether silenced notifications are shown there.
Turn on Do Not Disturb from Control Center
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold Focus.
- Tap Do Not Disturb.
This shortcut is convenient when you need immediate quiet without changing a schedule. It does not replace reviewing the Focus configuration if you need a lasting rule.
If Do Not Disturb keeps turning on after you switch it off, open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and inspect its schedules. An active schedule can reactivate it automatically. Check each automatic trigger rather than assuming the mode is being enabled at random.
Change the Lock Screen layout instead of suppressing alerts
If your main problem is a crowded Lock Screen rather than sound or unexpected delivery, change the notification display style. On iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Notifications, then choose Count, Stack, or List.

- Count shows a number of notifications at the bottom of the Lock Screen.
- Stack groups notifications into a compact pile.
- List displays notifications individually in a list.
These choices alter presentation only. Apps can still send notifications, and the alerts remain subject to each app’s Lock Screen, preview, sound, and banner settings. Choose Count for the least visual detail, Stack for a compact middle ground, or List when seeing each alert at a glance matters more than reducing clutter.
Understand the limits of Focus and Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb and other Focus modes are not an absolute guarantee that every alert will be blocked. Apple says Critical Alerts from supported apps can come through even when the iPhone is muted or a Focus is active. Critical Alerts are controlled by the supporting app, so their availability and behavior are not universal.
For that reason, use per-app notification settings when an alert must not appear on the Lock Screen at all. Use Focus for context-based filtering, and verify whether the app or alert type can bypass the mode. If a supported app classifies an alert as critical, changing the ordinary Focus allow-list may not prevent it.

The alert is still visible after turning off Lock Screen
- Return to Settings > Notifications and confirm you changed the correct app, not a similarly named app.
- Check whether you disabled only Lock Screen while leaving Banners enabled. A banner can still appear while you use the iPhone.
- If the alert is in Notification Center, that is expected: turning off Lock Screen does not necessarily remove Notification Center delivery.
- If you need no notifications from the app, turn off Allow Notifications instead.
- Check the app’s own categories. A different category may have separate alert controls from the one you changed.
The message text is still exposed
- Open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never.
- Check the individual app’s preview setting if it has one; an app-level setting can provide a more specific choice.
- Remember that hiding previews does not remove the alert. To remove the alert from the Lock Screen, disable that app’s Lock Screen location.
- If no preview control appears, the app may not support previews in the same way as other apps.
Scheduled Summary is not delaying an app
- Verify that Scheduled Summary is turned on and that at least one delivery time is configured.
- Confirm the app is selected for the summary.
- Open the app’s notification settings and choose Scheduled Summary instead of Immediate Delivery when both controls appear.
- If the app cannot be selected, check that Allow Notifications is enabled first.
- Remember that an app set to Immediate Delivery will continue arriving as it happens, even when other apps are batched.
Focus activates again unexpectedly
- Open Settings > Focus and select the affected Focus.
- Review every schedule and automatic trigger.
- Disable or edit the schedule that is turning the Focus on when you do not want it.
- Review which people and apps are allowed, and check the option controlling whether silenced notifications appear on the Lock Screen.
An alert bypasses Focus
Check whether it is a Critical Alert from a supported app. These alerts can be delivered while the iPhone is muted or a Focus is active, so changing the Focus allow-list may not block that alert type. If the alert is not critical, inspect the app’s own notification settings and confirm that it is not an allowed app.

Start with the narrowest control that matches your goal. For one troublesome app, disable its Lock Screen location. For a complete stop, disable Allow Notifications. For privacy, hide previews. For a short break, mute from the alert. For predictable quiet periods, schedule a Focus; for less urgent apps that can wait, use Scheduled Summary. If none of those should suppress delivery, change Count, Stack, or List to make the Lock Screen easier to scan.
You can combine controls. For example, Scheduled Summary can delay a shopping app, turning off Lock Screen can keep its eventual alert out of view, and Show Previews can conceal message text from apps that remain visible. Focus can then provide a separate rule for work or sleep hours. Combining settings is often more effective than turning off every notification and later missing an important alert.

Menu names and available controls can change between iOS releases, and individual apps may expose different notification categories or preview options. If a label is not present, use the app’s page under Settings > Notifications and apply the closest available alert-location or delivery control.
