Regular ice melts when nearby light is high enough. If you need an ice structure, floor, or road that can stay illuminated, use packed ice or blue ice instead. Packed ice is documented as not melting near bright light sources, and blue ice is likewise used as a permanent ice variant for builds and ice-boat highways.
For regular ice that you want to keep as an item, mine it with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Frost Walker is not a permanent solution: it creates temporary frosted ice while you keep moving, and that ice gradually melts after you stop.

Light is the main trigger for ordinary ice melting. Torches and other bright artificial light sources can therefore destroy an exposed ice block even when the surrounding build is otherwise safe. In an ice farm, adding lights for visibility can create a repeating melt-and-refreeze cycle instead of protecting the farm.
The practical consequence is simple: treat regular ice as a light-sensitive building material. Either keep bright light away from it, or replace it with a non-melting variant before you add lighting. A roof or wall that looks dark in a test world may behave differently after you install lanterns, torches, glow blocks, or another strong light source nearby.

What light level melts ice?
There is no single threshold that can be stated safely for every Minecraft release and edition. The exact behavior has changed or shown implementation discrepancies. Mojang issue MC-217424 records ice forming or melting at light level 10, which is evidence that a commonly repeated threshold does not describe every situation reliably.
If a precise light level matters to a farm or technical build, test the exact Java or Bedrock version you are playing. Do not assume that a value from an older tutorial applies unchanged. For ordinary construction, the safer rule is operational rather than numeric: bright light can melt regular ice, so use a non-melting block wherever illumination is required.
Why a light-level test can appear inconsistent
- Different Minecraft editions and releases can implement block updates differently.
- A block may melt and later refreeze, making a single observation misleading.
- Changing a nearby light source can trigger an update after the build was placed.
- A test may involve frosted ice, regular ice, packed ice, or blue ice, which do not share the same behavior.
When documenting a design for other players, name the edition and version tested instead of presenting one universal number.
The dependable permanent solution: packed ice
Packed ice is the most straightforward substitute when an illuminated build must remain icy. Unlike normal ice, it is documented as not melting near bright light sources. That makes it suitable for an ice castle with interior lighting, a permanently lit floor, or a route where torches and other lights cannot be avoided.
Replace every regular-ice block in the portion that must survive illumination. A mixed build can still fail visually: a single ordinary ice accent beside a packed-ice wall can melt while the surrounding packed blocks remain unchanged. Check decorative corners, stairs, roofs, and recessed details as well as the main surface.

When packed ice is the right choice
- Lit interiors: You can add lighting without designing a dark room around the floor or walls.
- Permanent roads: Packed ice is used for ice-boat highways and transport routes.
- Predictable maintenance: You do not need to keep checking whether a torch was moved one block closer.
- Visual continuity: It retains the appearance of an ice-based build while avoiding regular ice’s light sensitivity.
Blue ice for permanent roads and special builds
Blue ice is another permanent ice variant used when players need ice that will not be lost to ordinary bright-light exposure. Ice-farming guidance describes packed and blue ice as materials for ice-boat highways and transport, and player guidance treats both as non-melting building variants.

Choose blue ice when its color suits the design or when you are building a transport route that already uses blue-ice sections. The important distinction for this question is permanence under lighting: blue ice is used in situations where regular ice would be vulnerable. If color matching matters, make a small lit test section in your target edition before replacing an entire road.
Choose the block before you build

The table’s key decision is not the enchantment cost or appearance; it is whether the block must remain in place beside a light source. For that requirement, packed ice or blue ice is the appropriate choice.
How to build a lit ice structure that will not melt
- Decide which surfaces must remain ice. Mark floors, walls, roofs, decorative panels, and transport lanes that will be exposed to lighting.
- Replace regular ice in those surfaces. Use packed ice for a conventional icy appearance or blue ice where its color and transport use fit the design.
- Install the lighting. Place torches and other bright sources where the build needs them; the non-melting variants remove the regular-ice light problem.
- Inspect mixed-material details. Look for ordinary ice left in trim, corners, ceilings, or hidden support sections. Those blocks remain vulnerable even when the main wall is packed or blue ice.
- Test the finished room in the target edition and version. Leave the lights in their final positions and watch for changes before copying the design into a long-term world.
This workflow is more reliable than building with regular ice first and trying to protect it later. Lighting changes can trigger melting or refreezing, and replacing the material afterward may require rebuilding decorative sections.
How to protect regular ice when you cannot replace it
Sometimes the visual style, available materials, or an existing farm requires ordinary ice. In that case, the only practical protection is to remove, shade, or relocate the light that is causing the problem.

Remove the light source
Take away torches, lanterns, glow-producing blocks, or other bright sources near the ice. This is the simplest diagnostic: if melting stops after the source is removed, lighting was the trigger.
Shade the ice
Use a roof, wall, or other construction that keeps the ice out of the problematic light. Shading is useful when a light source must remain nearby for another part of the build, but it can change the appearance and may not solve every version-specific edge case.
Relocate the light
Move illumination farther from the regular ice and check the result in the exact version being played. Because the documented threshold is not universal, do not rely on a distance copied from an unrelated tutorial. Confirm the final arrangement after all lights are installed.
Account for farm cycles
In an ice farm, protective lighting can cause a melt/refreeze cycle. The farm may appear to work while repeatedly losing and regenerating blocks. If consistent production matters, prefer a design that controls darkness and uses lighting away from the ice rather than adding bright sources directly beside the collection area.

Use a Silk Touch-enchanted pickaxe or another suitable Silk Touch tool when you need to move regular ice intact. The ice-farming tutorial identifies Silk Touch harvesting as the conventional method. Without that enchantment, ordinary ice is not safely recovered as an ice item, so breaking it can leave you with no reusable block for the new location.

- Equip the Silk Touch tool before breaking the block.
- Mine the regular ice you want to relocate.
- Collect the dropped ice and move it to the new build or storage area.
- Place it only after checking the destination for nearby bright light.
- If the destination will eventually be illuminated, use packed ice or blue ice there instead of repeating the same risk.
Silk Touch solves the transport problem; it does not make a placed regular-ice block immune to light. A Silk Touch-harvested block can still melt after you place it beside a bright source.
Why Frost Walker does not preserve a permanent ice floor
Frost Walker creates frosted ice under or around the player’s path. That ice is temporary. Continuous movement is needed to keep the effect present where light would otherwise melt it, and when the player stops, the frosted ice gradually melts.

Use Frost Walker for a temporary crossing, a visual effect, or a short-lived path made while walking. Do not use it as the preservation method for an ice house, permanent bridge, farm floor, or decorated road. If the block must still be there after you leave, build with packed ice or blue ice, or protect regular ice from the light source.

Step 1: Identify the block
Confirm whether the missing block was regular ice, packed ice, blue ice, or frosted ice. Only regular ice and temporary frosted ice belong in the ordinary light-melting diagnosis. Packed and blue ice are the intended permanent variants for illuminated construction.
Step 2: Check nearby illumination
Look for newly placed torches, lanterns, glow blocks, openings that admit strong light, or a light source moved closer during remodeling. Remove or relocate the suspected source and observe whether the area changes again.

Step 3: Check for a melt/refreeze cycle
If the location is an ice farm, the block may have melted and then refrozen rather than simply vanishing once. Lighting can repeatedly disturb that cycle. Review the whole farm instead of repairing only the block that caught your attention.
Step 4: Check the edition and version
When a test contradicts a guide, record whether the world is Java or Bedrock and the exact release. Mojang’s MC-217424 issue shows that light-level behavior has had discrepancies, so a threshold copied from another release may not predict your result.
Step 5: Choose a permanent fix
For a lit build, replace vulnerable regular ice with packed or blue ice. For an unlit build that must retain regular ice, keep the responsible light away, shade the area, or move the light to a safer location.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all ice behaves identically: Regular, packed, blue, and frosted ice have different preservation behavior.
- Relying on one universal light number: The documented MC-217424 discrepancy means exact thresholds require version-specific testing.
- Adding lights directly to an ice farm: This can create repeated melting and refreezing.
- Mining without Silk Touch: You may not recover regular ice as a reusable block.
- Using Frost Walker as a building material: Its frosted ice disappears gradually when movement stops.
- Replacing only the obvious blocks: Ordinary ice hidden in trim or support sections can still melt and leave holes.
- Testing before the final lighting pass: A design that survives in darkness may fail after the planned illumination is installed.

You are making an ice-boat highway
Use packed ice or blue ice, both of which are described in ice-farming guidance as highway and transport materials. Test the finished route in your edition if exact movement behavior is important to the design.

Break regular ice with Silk Touch, or rebuild the destination with packed or blue ice if it will be lit. Silk Touch preserves the block during mining but does not prevent future melting.
You are running an ice farm
Keep bright light away from the ice-generating area and watch for a melt/refreeze cycle. If you need visibility, place lighting where it does not expose the regular ice to the problematic brightness, then verify the result in your version.
You only need a temporary crossing
Frost Walker can create frosted ice while you move, but plan for it to melt after you stop. It is an effect for temporary travel, not a permanent floor.
