If HDR video stutters in Chrome or Edge on Windows 11, first check whether you use multiple displays with different refresh rates. Microsoft identifies mismatched rates as a possible cause of video stalling or repeatedly starting and stopping, and recommends matching them. If that does not help, compare playback conditions and test graphics settings one at a time; user reports do not establish one universal cause or guaranteed fix.
Start by narrowing down when the stutter happens
Before changing settings, compare the same video under a few conditions. These checks help isolate the scope of the problem; they do not prove its cause.
- Play the video in a window, then in full screen.
- Try another browser and, if practical, another video or service.
- Note whether the problem affects one display or every display.
- Describe the symptom precisely: dropped frames or judder, a freeze, repeated stopping and starting, or corrupted colors.
If only one video or service is affected, that comparison points away from a display-wide problem, but it does not identify a definitive cause.

Microsoft says different refresh rates across multiple monitors can cause video to stall or repeatedly start and stop. Its guidance recommends adjusting the displays so they use the same refresh rate when playback is affected. This applies to physical external monitors and Miracast-connected displays. - Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select a display, then open Advanced display.
- Check the refresh rate shown for that display. Repeat for the other connected displays.
- If the rates differ, temporarily set the displays to the same available refresh rate and test the video again.
Use a rate available to all the displays you are matching. If the stutter remains, restore the original rates rather than assuming refresh rate was the cause.
Keep Windows video playback settings in their proper scope
Windows also has video playback controls, but Microsoft describes them as applying to some Windows video apps, including Universal Windows Platform and Microsoft Store apps. They are not a general control panel for every browser video path, so changing them should not be treated as a direct Chrome or Edge fix.

Use HDR and hardware-acceleration toggles only as temporary tests
Chrome Help Community users have described varied HDR or video glitches involving Windows HDR, GPU acceleration, and Chromium-based browsers. Those posts are user reports, not verified engineering diagnoses, and they do not show that all Chrome or Edge stuttering has the same root cause. Some users report that changing HDR or acceleration changes the symptom; this does not establish either toggle as the best or permanent fix. See the Chrome Help Community reports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Write down whether Windows HDR and browser hardware acceleration are currently enabled.
- Change only one setting at a time, then replay the same video under the same conditions.
- Record whether playback improves, worsens, or stays the same, and whether image quality changes.
- Restore the original setting if the test does not help or degrades HDR image quality or browser performance.
Treat these changes as comparisons, not prescriptions. Avoid relying on community launch arguments or other unofficial workarounds as durable Chrome or Edge instructions; they may become obsolete.

Record the setup if the problem persists
A concise record helps make a support request actionable and avoids repeating tests. Note:
- Windows build and Chrome or Edge version
- GPU model and graphics driver version
- Monitor models, connection types, and refresh rates
- Whether Windows HDR is enabled
- The video service and whether playback was windowed or full screen
- Whether the symptom was judder, apparent dropped frames, freezing, repeated stopping and starting, or color corruption
- Which single settings you changed and what happened
What not to conclude from a stutter
A change in behavior after toggling HDR or acceleration is useful diagnostic information, but it does not by itself confirm a root cause. The cited evidence does not establish a universal browser setting, registry edit, or hardware purchase that fixes this symptom. Consider hardware replacement only if a separate, specific hardware fault has been established.
