On an Android phone, turn off Gemini’s screen access at Gemini > profile picture or initial > Settings > Screen context, then disable both Use text from screen and Use screenshot. If Gemini Live is actively sharing your display, stop that session separately. If Gemini keeps appearing over other apps, change the phone’s default digital assistant; that is a different control.
Identify which Gemini behavior you want to stop
“Gemini seeing my screen” and “Gemini opening over other apps” describe related but separate Android behaviors. Choosing the right setting matters because disabling one does not automatically disable the others.
| Behavior | Setting or action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini uses what is visible in another app | Screen context: turn off Use text from screen and Use screenshot | Stops the documented screen-context methods Gemini uses when you open it as an overlay. |
| Gemini Live is currently broadcasting the display | Turn off screen sharing in Gemini, or Stop sharing on Android’s Screen Sharing notification | Ends the active full-screen sharing session. |
| Gemini launches as an assistant over another app | Change Android’s default digital assistant app | Controls which assistant responds to “Hey Google” or an assistant gesture such as holding the power button. |
| Gemini responds while the phone is locked | Gemini on lock screen > Use Gemini without unlocking | Controls lock-screen access; it does not change screen context or assistant selection. |
These are independent controls. For example, turning off Screen context can stop Gemini from using visible text or a screenshot, but Gemini can still open as the selected assistant. Conversely, changing the default assistant does not switch off Screen context inside the Gemini app.

Turn off Gemini’s ordinary screen context
This is the setting to use when you do not want Gemini to read or capture content from the app currently visible on your phone.

- Open the Gemini mobile app on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile picture or account initial in the app.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Screen context.
- Switch off Use text from screen.
- Switch off Use screenshot.
Disable both switches. The first concerns text Gemini can use from the visible screen; the second concerns using a screenshot of that screen. Leaving either option enabled means one of the documented screen-context paths remains available.
What happens after the switches are off
Gemini may still open when you invoke it, but it should no longer use the two screen-context inputs controlled by these switches. You can continue to type or speak a prompt directly in Gemini. The setting is about information supplied from the current screen, not about whether the Gemini app exists or whether the assistant can launch.
Intelligent Screen Context and language limits
Google describes Intelligent Screen Context as a feature that can infer when visible content should be used in a conversation. The documented way to disable that behavior is to turn off both Screen context switches. Google also says Intelligent Screen Context availability depends on language and is available only when Gemini is being used in English. Availability and wording can change as the Gemini app is updated.
Stop an active Gemini Live screen share
Gemini Live screen sharing is an explicit, active session and is not the same as the ordinary Screen context setting. During this mode, Google says the full phone screen is shared. If you started a Live share and want it to end immediately, use either of these methods:
- In Gemini Live, tap Turn off screen sharing.
- Alternatively, swipe down from the top of the display to open the notification shade, find the Android Screen Sharing card, and tap Stop sharing.
Use the notification-shade method if Gemini is not currently in the foreground or if you want Android’s system control to end the broadcast. Closing the Gemini window without using one of these stop actions is not the documented way to terminate an active share.
How to confirm the Live session ended
- The Screen Sharing notification or card is no longer present.
- Gemini no longer shows a screen-sharing state or the Turn off screen sharing control.
- After returning to another app, no Android sharing indicator remains for that session.
If the card remains, open the notification shade again and tap Stop sharing; the Live session and ordinary Screen context are controlled separately.
Prevent Gemini from opening over other apps
Gemini can appear as an on-screen assistant overlay when you say “Hey Google” or use a device gesture, such as holding the power button. If your goal is to prevent Gemini from launching over the app you are using, change the phone’s default digital assistant rather than changing Screen context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the Android Settings app.
- Open Apps, or the device’s equivalent app-management section.
- Choose Default apps.
- Open the entry for the Digital assistant app, Default digital assistant, or similarly named option.
- Select a different available assistant, or choose the option that disables an assistant if your device offers one.
Google notes that the setting name and exact path can vary by Android device. On some phones, search Settings for default assistant, digital assistant, or device assistance if you do not see the entry under Apps.
What changing the default assistant does not do
This change controls which assistant is launched by assistant invocation. It does not turn off Use text from screen or Use screenshot inside Gemini, and it does not end a Gemini Live screen-share session that is already running. Apply the relevant control for each behavior you want to stop.

Disable Gemini access from the lock screen
If the concern is Gemini answering while the phone is locked, use its separate lock-screen control:
- Open Gemini.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Settings.
- Open Gemini on lock screen.
- Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
This setting addresses whether Gemini can be used without first unlocking the device. It is not a replacement for Screen context controls and does not determine which assistant opens over an unlocked app.
Choose the smallest change that solves your concern
Use the following decision path instead of changing every setting unnecessarily:
You do not want Gemini to use content from the app on screen
Turn off both Screen context switches: Use text from screen and Use screenshot.
You see a sharing indicator or started Live screen sharing
End the session with Turn off screen sharing in Gemini or Stop sharing in the Android Screen Sharing card.
Gemini appears whenever you use a gesture or voice command
Change the Android default digital assistant. This prevents Gemini from being the assistant selected for that invocation, subject to the options your device provides.
You only want to block responses while the phone is locked
Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking under Gemini on lock screen.
Understand what “seeing the screen” means
The two Screen context switches describe two different inputs, not two copies of the same permission. Use text from screen concerns text Gemini can use from the visible app. Use screenshot concerns supplying an image of that display. Turning off only one leaves the other documented input enabled, so privacy-conscious users should turn off both.
An overlay and a broadcast also look different in practice. An overlay is Gemini appearing on top of the app after an assistant trigger. A Live screen share is an explicitly started sharing state in which Android displays a Screen Sharing notification or card. Seeing the overlay alone is not proof that the entire display is being broadcast. Conversely, stopping the overlay does not necessarily remove an already active sharing card.

These distinctions also explain why there is no single “block Gemini everywhere” switch in the documented controls. Screen context, Live sharing, assistant selection, and lock-screen access are separate pathways with separate switches or actions.

A complete reset sequence
If you are unsure which state is active, work through the controls in this order:
- Open the notification shade first. If a Screen Sharing card is present, tap Stop sharing. This ends an active full-screen Live session immediately.
- Open Gemini’s profile menu and go to Settings > Screen context. Turn off both Use text from screen and Use screenshot.
- In Gemini settings, open Gemini on lock screen and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking if you do not want lock-screen access.
- Open Android Settings and review Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app, using the equivalent label on your phone. Select another assistant or the device’s disable option if available.
- Repeat the original trigger once, such as the gesture or voice command that opened Gemini, and check which behavior remains. That test tells you whether the remaining issue is invocation, screen context, Live sharing, or lock-screen access.
This sequence does not require buying an accessory or installing another utility. The controls are software settings in Gemini and Android. A privacy screen protector can restrict viewing angles for people nearby, but it cannot change Gemini’s screen-context switches or stop a Live broadcast.
If you cannot find the settings
The Screen context menu is missing
Confirm that you are in the Gemini mobile app, not a browser tab or a different Google app. Open the profile menu inside Gemini and look specifically for Settings, then Screen context. Menu placement can change with app updates, account configuration, language, and Android version.
If the labels differ, use the settings search field for screen context, use text from screen, or use screenshot. The wording may not be identical on every release, but the two documented controls are the ones that govern ordinary screen context.

The default-assistant option has another name
Manufacturers customize Android Settings. Try the Settings search for digital assistant, default assistant, or device assistance. Google specifically warns that the label can vary across devices, so an absent phrase does not necessarily mean the function is unavailable.
You turned off Screen context but Gemini still opens
That result is expected when Gemini remains the selected default assistant. Screen context controls what Gemini may use from the visible display; default-assistant settings control whether Gemini is launched by an assistant trigger. Change the default digital assistant if launching is the problem.
You stopped the overlay but still see a sharing notification
An overlay invocation and a Live screen-share session are different states. Pull down the notification shade and use Stop sharing on the Screen Sharing card. If you want to prevent future use of visible content as well, separately disable both Screen context switches.

- Open an app containing text that you do not want Gemini to use.
- Invoke Gemini in the same way as before, if you still need to test the launch behavior.
- Check that Use text from screen and Use screenshot remain off in Settings > Screen context.
- If Live was involved, verify that no Screen Sharing card remains in the notification shade.
- If the phone is locked, verify that Use Gemini without unlocking is off.
- If Gemini should not launch at all from a gesture or voice trigger, confirm that another option is selected under Android’s default digital assistant setting.
These checks cover four separate pathways: ordinary screen context, an active Live broadcast, assistant invocation, and lock-screen access. A result in one pathway does not prove that the others are disabled.
Device, app, and language caveats
The instructions above apply to the Gemini mobile app on Android. Android manufacturers can rename or relocate default-assistant controls, and app or operating-system updates can alter menu placement. If a control is not present, install available updates and check the current Settings search terms before assuming the feature has been removed.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help pages qualify Intelligent Screen Context by language: it is available only when Gemini is used in English. Other screen actions or account capabilities may have their own availability requirements. The visible labels and exact behavior can therefore differ by device, Android release, app version, account, and language. Google’s help pages also describe device assistance and lock-screen access as separate settings, which is why changing one path may leave another unchanged.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning off only one Screen context switch: both Use text from screen and Use screenshot are documented controls, so disable both when you want ordinary screen-context use off.
- Confusing an overlay with screen sharing: Gemini opening over another app does not by itself prove that Gemini Live is broadcasting the entire display.
- Closing Gemini instead of stopping Live sharing: use the explicit Turn off screen sharing or Android’s Stop sharing action.
- Changing the default assistant when the issue is data access: assistant selection affects launching; it does not replace Screen context settings.
- Using the lock-screen switch for an unlocked-phone concern: Use Gemini without unlocking applies only to lock-screen access.
- Assuming a privacy screen protector changes Gemini permissions: a physical viewing-angle accessory can limit what nearby people see, but it does not disable software screen-context controls or end a Live screen-share session.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Screen context stop Gemini from opening over another app?
No. It stops the documented Use text from screen and Use screenshot inputs, but Gemini can still launch as the selected digital assistant. Change Android’s default digital assistant if the overlay itself is the problem.
Do I need to disable both Use text from screen and Use screenshot?
Yes, if you want ordinary Screen context disabled. They control separate documented ways of supplying visible-screen content to Gemini.
How do I stop Gemini Live from sharing my entire display?
In Gemini Live, tap Turn off screen sharing. You can also open Android’s notification shade and tap Stop sharing on the Screen Sharing card.
Does changing the default assistant end a Live screen share?
No. Default-assistant selection controls which assistant responds to a trigger. Stop an active Live share separately with Turn off screen sharing or Stop sharing.
Can I stop Gemini from responding while my phone is locked?
Yes. In Gemini, open your profile menu, choose Settings, open Gemini on lock screen, and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why are the menu names different on my Android phone?
Android manufacturers can rename or move the default-assistant setting. Search Settings for digital assistant, default assistant, or device assistance. Gemini menu wording can also change with app version, language, account, and device.
Do I need a privacy screen protector or another paid product?
No purchase is required for these controls. A privacy screen protector limits nearby viewing angles, but it does not change Gemini’s software permissions or stop a Live screen-sharing session.
The Bottom Line
For ordinary screen access, open Gemini > profile picture or initial > Settings > Screen context and turn off both Use text from screen and Use screenshot. Stop any active Live broadcast with Turn off screen sharing or Android’s Stop sharing. If Gemini still opens over other apps, change Android’s default digital assistant; if the phone is locked, separately disable Use Gemini without unlocking.
