To stop Gemini from answering while your Android phone is locked, open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture or initial, select Settings → Gemini on lock screen, and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking. If you also want to block lock-screen calls and texts, disable Make calls and send messages without unlocking on the same page. These are separate controls.
The instructions apply to most Android phones and tablets. Menu names can vary by Android version and manufacturer, and Google says Pixel Tablet users must unlock the tablet before using Gemini.
Turn off Gemini’s lock-screen responses
Google’s main privacy control is inside the Gemini mobile app, not the general Android lock-screen settings.

- Open the Gemini app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the app.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Gemini on lock screen.
- Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
After this switch is off, Gemini should require the device to be unlocked before it provides its normal lock-screen answers. Google documents this setting in its Gemini lock-screen help. The wording may look slightly different on a particular Android release, but the important label is Use Gemini without unlocking.

Block calls and messages separately
Disabling general Gemini answers does not automatically disable every action Gemini can perform from the lock screen. On the same Gemini on lock screen page, find Make calls and send messages without unlocking and turn it off if you do not want those actions available while the device is locked.
This second switch matters if your concern is someone placing a call or sending a message from a locked phone. It is independent of the general response switch, so check both settings rather than assuming one controls the other.
What each lock-screen control actually does
Gemini’s lock-screen behavior is split across several controls. Use this table to identify the setting that matches the behavior you want to stop.

If Gemini is still responding after you turn it off
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different route by which a locked device may appear to answer.

1. Confirm the main switch is off
Return to Gemini app → profile picture or initial → Settings → Gemini on lock screen. Verify that Use Gemini without unlocking is visibly disabled. If you changed the setting on one Google account, make sure the Gemini app is currently using that same account; account-specific availability can affect which controls appear.
2. Check the calls-and-messages switch
If the unexpected behavior involves dialing a contact or composing a text rather than answering a general question, inspect Make calls and send messages without unlocking. Turn it off independently. The general Gemini switch and this communications switch are not interchangeable.
3. Determine whether Google Assistant is answering
Gemini and Google Assistant can be integrated differently across Android devices. If the response appears to come from Assistant, open the Google Home app and go to Popular settings → Lock screen. Review Assistant responses on lock screen and disable it if you do not want Assistant to answer while locked.
This is a troubleshooting check, not a guarantee that every device uses the same integration. Google notes that menus and behavior can vary with device configuration.
4. Review lock-screen notification permissions
If the issue is Gemini reading or replying to a notification, disabling general answers alone may not remove every permission involved. Android’s Sensitive notifications setting controls whether notification details can be exposed on the lock screen. Google app notification access is another separate permission, found under Android’s special app access or notification-access menus on some devices.

Review both the Gemini lock-screen page and the Android notification settings. The exact route and label depend on the Android version and manufacturer, so use the settings search field for Sensitive notifications, notification access, or special app access if the menu is not obvious.

Press the power button to lock the device, wait for the lock screen to appear, and then test the behavior you are trying to stop. A request made immediately after unlocking, or while the screen is merely dimmed, does not test the lock-screen permission. Test both the on-screen Gemini entry point and “Hey Google” if both had been active before.
What Gemini can and cannot do while locked
When the lock-screen permission is enabled, Google says Gemini can respond to requests by touch or by the “Hey Google” wake phrase on supported Android phones and tablets. Turning off Use Gemini without unlocking removes that general access.
Even when lock-screen use is allowed, not every request succeeds. Google says some requests, including personal-content requests such as calendar details, may require the device to be unlocked. A request that prompts for an unlock is therefore not evidence that the setting failed; it may be a deliberate security requirement for that type of information.
Calls and messages are treated as a separate capability. You must disable their dedicated switch if you want to prevent those actions as well as ordinary answers.

Stopping notification reading and replies
Notification handling is more complicated than ordinary question-and-answer access because it combines Gemini’s lock-screen permission with Android’s notification privacy controls.
Understand the two Android-side dependencies
- Sensitive notifications: Android decides whether notification contents are allowed to appear on the lock screen. If sensitive content is hidden, Gemini should not be able to use that hidden text in the same way it could use visible notification content.
- Google app notification access: Google identifies notification access as a separate control under Android’s special app access or notification-access menus. Its state can affect whether device-assistance features can read or act on notifications.
Because manufacturers organize these menus differently, there is no single universal tap path beyond the labels themselves. Open Android Settings and search for the exact terms above, then review which apps have notification access and whether sensitive notification content is shown while locked.
Use the least-permissive combination
If you want no Gemini interaction with notifications from a locked device, turn off Use Gemini without unlocking, turn off the calls-and-messages option, hide sensitive notifications on the lock screen, and review Google app notification access. Changing only one of these settings may leave another notification-related capability available.

Google says Gemini is available on most Android phone and tablet lock screens, but availability is not universal. Pixel Tablet users must unlock the device to use Gemini, so the lock-screen response switch does not provide the same behavior on that product.

Age restrictions and supervised accounts can also limit Gemini features. A missing option, a disabled control, or a different lock-screen result may therefore reflect account eligibility rather than a malfunction. Device menu labels can differ by Android version and manufacturer as well.

These qualifications matter when following instructions from another phone. A path shown on a Pixel phone may not have the same wording on a Samsung, Motorola, or other Android device, and a supervised account may not expose all of the controls described in Google’s general help.
A privacy-focused setup checklist
Use this checklist when the objective is to prevent any meaningful Gemini activity before unlocking:
- In Gemini settings, disable Use Gemini without unlocking.
- Disable Make calls and send messages without unlocking.
- In Android notification settings, decide whether Sensitive notifications should be hidden on the lock screen.
- Review Google app notification access under the Android special-app-access or notification-access area.
- In Google Home, check Popular settings → Lock screen → Assistant responses on lock screen if Assistant still answers.
- Lock the screen and test a normal question, “Hey Google,” a call request, and a notification-related request separately.
The final test should be performed with the phone locked, not merely with the display turned off or dimmed. If one test still works, identify whether it is a general answer, a communication action, notification handling, or an Assistant response; then change the corresponding control rather than repeatedly toggling the main Gemini switch.
When you may want to leave one feature enabled
Not everyone needs to disable every lock-screen capability. You can turn off general answers while leaving another option available, or disable calling and messaging while keeping a limited voice interaction. The settings are independent, so configure only the functions that match your privacy and convenience needs.
Remember that leaving a capability enabled means the phone may process the corresponding request without a full unlock, subject to Google’s request-specific restrictions. Personal information may still trigger an unlock prompt, while simpler supported actions can work from the lock screen.
