To stop Gemini in Chrome from receiving your tab content automatically, open Chrome > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions and switch off Share current tab by default. That change applies to new chats. If a chat is already sharing tabs, remove them from Show shared tabs; the setting does not retroactively revoke an existing share. If you also want to prevent Gemini from carrying out multi-step web tasks, separately disable Let Gemini browse for you.
Which Gemini permission should you change?
Chrome exposes several controls that sound similar but govern different actions. Choose the one that matches your concern rather than hiding the Gemini button or changing an unrelated preference.

These options can coexist. For example, turning off default sharing does not remove a tab already attached to an open conversation, and hiding the icon does not disable either permission.
Turn off automatic sharing for new chats
Google’s desktop help explains that Gemini in Chrome shares the content of the current tab by default when you open Gemini. Use this procedure to change that default.

- Open Chrome on a supported computer and select More, the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- In the Settings sidebar, open AI innovations. If you do not see that category, use the Settings menu or search within Settings for Gemini.
- Select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Permissions, switch Share current tab by default off.
The result is deliberately narrow: a newly opened Gemini chat will no longer begin with the current tab automatically supplied as context. This is not a global shutdown of Gemini, and it does not prevent you from deliberately sharing a page later through an explicit sharing action. Additional tabs remain user-selectable; Google documents sharing as many as 10 open tabs, including tabs in different browser windows.
Remove tabs that an active chat already has
Changing the default does not undo a share that has already happened. Revoke those tabs in the conversation itself.
- Open the Gemini conversation in Chrome.
- Look immediately above the text box for Show shared tabs and select it.
- Find the tab you no longer want to provide and select Remove tab beside it.
- Repeat for every tab that should be detached.
Google indicates that a glowing underline identifies a tab being shared. After removal, check that the underline has disappeared. If several tabs are listed, remove each one individually; changing the browser-wide default does not clear this list.

Stop tab sharing in Gemini Live
Gemini Live has visible sharing controls inside the Live interface, so use those controls rather than assuming the ordinary chat setting covers the session.
Pause the current tab
While Live is running, use the current-tab sharing or pause-sharing control shown in the Live interface. This pauses the page currently being supplied to Live without requiring you to close the conversation.
Manage selected tabs
For tabs other than the current page, open Manage tabs. Remove the individual tabs you no longer want Live to receive.
Remove every Live tab at once
Select Stop sharing tabs when you want to clear all tab sharing from that Live session. Google’s Live instructions also describe sharing up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows. A Live session can therefore have more than the visible page attached, so review the management list when privacy matters.

Supplying page content and allowing Gemini to browse on your behalf are separate permissions. If your concern is that Gemini could perform a sequence of web actions or gather information across pages, turn off the browse permission as well as (or instead of) the content-sharing default.

- Open Chrome’s More menu and choose Settings.
- Go to AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome.
- In Permissions, switch Let Gemini browse for you off.
This setting addresses browse-for-you tasks. It should not be described as a substitute for removing a tab already listed under Show shared tabs; handle an existing attachment in the conversation, too.
What Chrome may still share after the default is off
Explicit sharing remains possible
The default switch controls what happens when a new chat starts. Google still provides actions for deliberately adding a page or other open tabs. Treat the switch as a “do not attach automatically” preference, not as a blanket prohibition on every future sharing action.
Other open tabs are not automatically included by that switch
The current tab is the one covered by the default behavior. Additional tabs can be selected separately, with a documented limit of up to 10 open tabs. If you have multiple browser windows, inspect the shared-tab list rather than relying on which window is in front.

When the shared page is a Google Workspace item such as a document, Google says Gemini may directly access the associated Workspace account while answering about that page. If the tab contains company, school, customer, or personal records, review the account and document permissions before sharing it. Removing the tab from the chat stops that tab from being shared in the conversation, but it does not change the underlying Workspace sharing permissions.
The Gemini icon is only a visibility preference
Show Gemini at the top of the browser is listed separately under Preferences. Turning the icon off can make the interface less visible, but it is not evidence that tab sharing or browse-for-you access has been disabled. Use the Permissions controls for those decisions.
If “Gemini in Chrome” is missing from Settings
The feature is being rolled out gradually, so the menu is not guaranteed to appear for every Chrome installation, account, or location. Work through these checks without assuming that a particular browser version will unlock it; Google’s desktop instructions do not specify a version number that guarantees availability.
- Confirm the device type: the documented controls are for Chrome on a supported computer, not every mobile or managed-browser configuration.
- Sign in to Chrome: Gemini in Chrome requires an eligible signed-in setup.
- Check region and language: Google limits availability to supported regions and languages, which can make the menu differ between otherwise identical installations.
- Update Chrome normally: install updates offered by Chrome, but do not treat an arbitrary version number as a guaranteed fix.
- Consider account management: an employer or school administrator may control whether Gemini in Chrome is available for that account.
- Allow for staged rollout: a missing menu can reflect rollout timing rather than a setting you have overlooked.
If an administrator manages the browser, ask whether Gemini in Chrome or its permissions are disabled by policy. A personal profile and a managed work profile can show different options on the same computer.

Use this checklist to verify the specific permission you intended to change. It avoids confusing a hidden button with revoked access.

- Open a fresh Gemini chat after turning off Share current tab by default.
- Look above the message field for the shared-tab indicator. A page should not be listed merely because it is the active tab; do not deliberately add it during this check.
- Open a conversation that previously had a tab attached and inspect Show shared tabs. Remove any entries that should no longer be present.
- If you use Gemini Live, open Manage tabs inside Live and confirm that only the tabs you intentionally kept remain. Use Stop sharing tabs when the list should be empty.
- If automated browsing is outside your needs, revisit Permissions and confirm Let Gemini browse for you is off.
The glowing underline is a useful visual confirmation for an individual tab: Google says it disappears when sharing stops. It does not replace checking the conversation’s shared-tab list, especially when more than one tab or browser window is involved.
Choose the smallest change that solves your concern
You only want to stop silent attachment of the page you are reading
Turn off Share current tab by default. Keep in mind that an explicit share remains available if you later decide a page is useful context.
You already sent a sensitive page to Gemini
Open Show shared tabs and remove that tab from the active chat. Also review other entries in the list, because the documented limit allows several open tabs to be attached.
You use Gemini Live and want a clean session
Use Live’s Stop sharing tabs command, then pause or re-enable sharing only when needed. The ordinary new-chat default does not perform this Live-session cleanup.
You are worried about actions across websites
Disable Let Gemini browse for you. If the current conversation also contains shared pages, remove those separately.
You simply do not want the Gemini button displayed
Change Show Gemini at the top of the browser under Preferences. Understand that this changes the interface, not the underlying Permissions choices.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Assuming one switch revokes everything
Default sharing, existing chat attachments, Live sharing, and browse-for-you are separate states. Apply the control that matches each state instead of relying on one toggle.

Checking only the active window
Gemini can accept additional open tabs, and Google documents a limit of up to 10. Review Show shared tabs or Live’s Manage tabs to catch tabs opened in another window.
Expecting the default change to clean an old conversation
The default applies to new chats. Existing attachments require the conversation-level Remove tab action.
Assuming a missing menu means the setting was removed
Gradual rollout, account eligibility, supported language or region, device support, and administrator policy can all affect whether Gemini in Chrome appears. Check those conditions before troubleshooting Chrome as if the control were universally available.

Make the permission decision at the moment you open a chat, not only when you configure Chrome. Look at the shared-tab indicator above the message box before typing a prompt. If the page is a document, spreadsheet, mail message, customer record, or school file, confirm that you intend to provide that context and that the signed-in account is the right one. A visible page may also contain information outside the part currently on screen, so do not assume that scrolling position limits what the tab represents.
When several windows are open, compare the titles in Show shared tabs with the pages you meant to discuss. The documented allowance of up to 10 tabs makes an explicit review worthwhile after switching windows or opening a tab from a conversation. Remove anything unrelated before sending another prompt.
How the controls behave in a managed browser
On a work or school profile, an administrator can determine whether Gemini in Chrome is available. That can affect both whether the Gemini menu appears and which permissions are editable. A policy-controlled profile may therefore behave differently from a personal Chrome profile on the same computer. If a control is missing, greyed out, or returns after you change it, ask the administrator which Gemini features are enabled for the account rather than installing an extension or changing unrelated browser settings.
The controls described here are software preferences built into Chrome. A privacy accessory, replacement browser part, or physical manual cannot disable Google’s tab-sharing permission, and hiding the Gemini button is not an equivalent workaround. Use the built-in Permissions and conversation controls.
What happens when you turn sharing back on?
Turning Share current tab by default on changes the starting behavior for future chats again; it does not automatically describe every tab in every conversation. You can leave the default off and share a page explicitly only when it is appropriate. If you re-enable it, open a fresh chat and verify which page appears in the shared-tab area before sending a message. For Live, use its own pause, Manage tabs, and Stop sharing tabs controls rather than assuming the ordinary chat preference has changed the Live session.

Quick decision guide
- New chats should start without the current page: turn off Share current tab by default.
- An existing conversation contains a page: use Show shared tabs > Remove tab for each unwanted tab.
- Gemini Live is receiving pages: pause the current tab, remove selected tabs in Manage tabs, or choose Stop sharing tabs for all of them.
- You want to prevent multi-step browsing: turn off Let Gemini browse for you.
- You only want the button gone: change Show Gemini at the top of the browser, knowing that this is a display preference.
Re-enable sharing deliberately
If you later decide that Gemini should use the page you are viewing as context, return to Chrome > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions and turn Share current tab by default on. For a narrower approach, leave the default off and use an explicit share only for a conversation where the page is appropriate. In either case, inspect the shared-tab indicator before sending sensitive content, and remove the tab when the conversation no longer needs it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Share current tab by default remove tabs from an existing chat?
No. It changes the default for new chats. Open the existing conversation, choose Show shared tabs, and select Remove tab beside every tab you want to detach.
How can I tell whether a tab is still being shared?
