To stop Gboard adapting to your typing on Android, open Gboard’s Settings, choose Privacy, and turn off Personalise for you. That changes future personalization; it does not erase words Gboard has already learned. To remove those words, use Gboard Settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words, or the Privacy > Delete learned words and data option if that label appears.
On an iPhone or iPad, open the Gboard app and choose Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary. iOS documentation also lets you remove an individual suggestion by touching and holding it, but it does not document an equivalent switch that disables every form of learning. The controls are therefore different by platform and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Which setting solves which problem?
Gboard has separate controls for future personalization, previously learned words, suggestion behavior, federated learning, and optional audio sharing. Choosing the wrong control can leave an embarrassing word in the suggestion strip or make you think personalization is disabled when only the dictionary was cleared.

| What you want to do | Android | iPhone or iPad | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop Gboard adapting to your typing and voice-typing patterns | Gboard Settings > Privacy > Personalise for you: turn it off. | No equivalent all-learning switch is documented in the cited iOS instructions. | Limits the documented personalization behavior going forward; it does not automatically erase existing learned words. |
| Erase all learned words or saved on-device learning data | Dictionary > Delete learned words, or Privacy > Delete learned words and data, depending on the version. | Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary. | Removes saved dictionary items. It is a cleanup action, not the same as turning off personalization. |
| Remove one unwanted suggestion | The documented material focuses on dictionary and privacy controls. | Touch and hold the suggestion, then confirm its removal. | Targets one suggestion instead of clearing the whole dictionary. |
| Limit data-sharing features beyond personal typing | Review Privacy for federated learning and Privacy > Voice > Audio donations. | The cited instructions do not establish matching controls. | These settings govern separate learning or voice-sharing functions. |
Menu names can vary with Android version, device manufacturer, language, and Gboard version. If one path is absent, use the alternate path described for your platform rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

Android: turn off personalized suggestions
Google documents Personalise for you as the control for limiting personalization based on an individual user’s typing and voice-typing patterns. The switch affects how Gboard adapts; it is not a command to delete the dictionary or disable every data-related feature.
Use Gboard’s in-keyboard settings
- Open any app with a text field, such as a message or notes app.
- Tap the text field so Gboard appears.
- Tap the Settings icon on the Gboard toolbar. If the toolbar is collapsed, use the left-side menu or the three-dot button to reveal the settings icon.
- Open Privacy.
- Find Personalise for you and switch it off.
Afterward, Gboard should no longer use the documented personal typing and voice-typing personalization behavior for future suggestions. Words already present in the learned dictionary can remain visible until you delete them separately.
Use Android system settings instead
If you cannot open Gboard from the keyboard toolbar, Google also documents this Android route:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap System.
- Choose Language and input (some devices place this under a similarly named language or keyboard section).
- Tap On-screen keyboard.
- Select Gboard.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Personalise for you.
Manufacturers and Android releases can rename or rearrange these menus. The important destination is Gboard’s own Privacy page, not a general keyboard setting for another keyboard installed on the phone.
Android: delete words Gboard has already learned
Turning off personalization does not perform a cleanup. If Gboard keeps offering a name, slang term, misspelling, or other private word, delete the learned data using one of the documented routes.
Delete learned words from Dictionary
- Open Gboard in any text-entry field and tap its Settings icon.
- Tap Dictionary.
- Choose Delete learned words.
- Gboard displays a confirmation number. Enter the number shown.
- Tap OK to confirm.
The confirmation number is intentional: deleting the learned dictionary is destructive, so verify that you are ready before accepting it. This action removes the saved learned words; it does not by itself change the Personalise for you switch.
Use the Privacy cleanup label when it appears
Google’s learning documentation also describes Gboard Settings > Privacy > Delete learned words and data. On versions showing that wording, follow the prompts on that Privacy page. The two labels describe separate menu paths to the cleanup function, and the label available on your phone depends on the installed version and device interface.

If your goal is both to stop future adaptation and to remove the current dictionary, do both operations: switch off Personalise for you, then delete the learned words or data. Completing only one leaves the other state unchanged.
iPhone and iPad: clear Gboard’s dictionary
Gboard on iOS uses a different settings route. The documented action is to clear the dictionary from the Gboard app rather than from Android-style system keyboard menus.
Standard Gboard app route
- Open the Gboard app on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Keyboard settings.
- Tap Clear my dictionary.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
If Gboard came with the Google app
Google documents an alternate route for installations associated with the Google app:
- Open the Google app.
- Open its Settings.
- Choose Gboard.
- Open Keyboard settings.
- Tap Clear my dictionary, then confirm.
The iOS instructions reviewed here document clearing saved words, but they do not document a control equivalent to Android’s Personalise for you switch. Clearing the dictionary should therefore not be described as proof that every form of learning or processing has been disabled.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Remove one suggestion without clearing everything
When only one suggestion is wrong or embarrassing, touch and hold that suggestion in the suggestion strip and confirm its removal. This is less disruptive than clearing the entire dictionary. You can also choose available suggestion types through Keyboard settings; the exact choices depend on the Gboard version and iOS interface.
Android privacy controls that are separate from personalization
Gboard’s Privacy page can contain controls for functions that are not the same as personal dictionary learning. Review each one according to the result you want.
Personalisation and on-device records
Google describes Personalise for you as improving recognition for one person and saving audio recordings and transcripts of what that person says and types on the device. That description explains why the switch belongs with personalization, but it does not make the switch a universal deletion command. If you need both a behavior change and an erasure, complete both steps.

Federated learning
Google says federated learning is enabled by default and can be turned off in Gboard’s Privacy settings. This is a separate control from Personalise for you. Turning off personalization should not be presented as automatically turning off federated learning, and changing the federated-learning setting should not be presented as deleting your saved words.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To review it, open Gboard, tap Settings > Privacy, locate the federated-learning option, and switch it off if that is your goal. Because labels can vary, read the description beside the control before confirming the change.
Optional audio donations
Google describes audio donations as voluntary. If a user has accepted them, audio snippets are sent to and stored by Google to help improve speech recognition for everyone. To stop sharing, Google documents Gboard Settings > Privacy > Voice > Audio donations; turn that option off.
Audio donations are not the same as the voice-typing personalization setting. A person can want to stop optional audio sharing while keeping other keyboard behavior, or can want to stop personal adaptation without having enabled donations. Check both controls when your privacy goal covers voice data as well as word suggestions.
How the controls interact
Think of the settings as two kinds of action. A toggle changes what Gboard does in the future. A delete or clear command removes information that is already saved. Neither action should be substituted for the other.
| Action | Immediate result | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off Personalise for you | Limits the documented individual typing and voice-typing personalization on Android. | It does not erase the learned dictionary or automatically change federated learning and audio donations. |
| Delete learned words or data | Removes the saved learned words or on-device learning data covered by that menu. | It does not itself turn off the personalization switch. |
| Clear my dictionary on iOS | Clears Gboard’s saved dictionary entries. | It does not establish that every iOS learning or processing function is disabled. |
| Remove one iOS suggestion | Deletes the selected suggestion without a complete dictionary reset. | It is not a documented Android-wide privacy reset. |
This distinction helps with common scenarios. If you simply dislike adaptation, start with the Android personalization toggle. If a particular private word still appears, perform the separate deletion. If you accepted voice donations, review that option even after changing personalization. If you are on iOS, use the dictionary and individual-suggestion controls that the app actually provides.
What Google says is stored on the device and sent
Google’s Android Gboard help says learned words are stored only on the device and are not sent to Google. The same help material separately lists searches, usage statistics, and voice input used for transcription among data that can be sent. These statements describe Google’s service and should not be expanded into a claim that every form of Gboard or Google data processing works the same way.

Google’s iOS support information makes similar statements about saved words and separately handled data. Clearing the dictionary removes the saved words covered by that control; it does not establish that all other categories of information have been erased.
For a precise decision, separate three questions:
- Do you want to prevent suggestions from adapting to your personal typing? On Android, use Personalise for you.
- Do you want to erase words already learned? Use Delete learned words, Delete learned words and data, or iOS Clear my dictionary.
- Do you want to limit broader learning or optional voice sharing? Review federated learning and audio donations independently on Android.
Choosing the least disruptive fix
| Symptom | Best first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Suggestions have started matching your personal writing style and you want that adaptation to stop. | Android: turn off Personalise for you. | It targets future individual personalization without immediately deleting the dictionary. |
| One offensive, private, or incorrect word keeps appearing. | iOS: touch and hold that suggestion and remove it. Android: use the learned-word deletion control if the word cannot be removed individually. | Use the narrowest available action when you do not want to erase every learned word. |
| You want a complete reset of Gboard’s learned vocabulary. | Android: Dictionary > Delete learned words or the Privacy cleanup option. iOS: Clear my dictionary. | This removes saved learned words rather than merely changing future behavior. |
| You want to limit all documented Android learning and voice-sharing options. | Review Personalise for you, federated learning, and Audio donations separately. | No single switch is documented as disabling all of these functions. |
Troubleshooting when a control is missing
The menu name does not match
Check for nearby wording such as Language and input versus a manufacturer-specific language or keyboard menu. Google’s documented Android destinations remain Gboard’s Privacy and Dictionary pages, but the route into them can differ by device and Android version.
You opened the wrong keyboard’s settings
Bring up the keyboard in a text field and confirm that the active keyboard is Gboard before tapping its settings icon. Android phones can have multiple on-screen keyboards, each with its own dictionary and privacy controls.
You cleared words but still see personalized behavior
Dictionary deletion and personalization are separate actions. Return to Gboard’s Privacy page and check Personalise for you if you also want future adaptation limited.
You turned off personalization but an old word remains
Use Dictionary > Delete learned words or Privacy > Delete learned words and data. The switch changes behavior; it is not the documented erase command.
You are on iOS and looking for an Android-style switch
The cited iOS support instructions document dictionary clearing, individual suggestion removal, and suggestion-type settings. They do not establish an iOS equivalent to Android’s all-purpose personalization switch, so use the controls that are actually present rather than assuming the Android path exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Gboard app is not where you expect on iOS
If Gboard was installed through the Google app, use Google app > Settings > Gboard > Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary. Otherwise, open the standalone Gboard app.

A practical privacy reset checklist
- Identify the platform: Android, iPhone, or iPad.
- Decide whether you need to stop future personalization, erase existing words, or both.
- On Android, open Gboard’s Privacy page and turn off Personalise for you when future adaptation is the concern.
- Delete learned words separately through Dictionary or the Privacy cleanup label when an erasure is required.
- On iOS, clear the dictionary from the Gboard app or the Google app route documented for your installation.
- Remove a single iOS suggestion by touching and holding it if a full reset is unnecessary.
- On Android, review federated learning and audio donations separately when your goal includes broader learning or voice-data sharing.
- Test the result in a text field and revisit the exact control if the behavior you wanted to change remains.
No accessory, replacement part, paid tool, or printed guide is needed for these fixes. Gboard is software, and the documented remedies are settings changes inside the keyboard or its companion app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Personalise for you delete words Gboard already learned?
No. On Android, it limits the documented future personalization based on your typing and voice-typing patterns. Delete existing entries separately with Dictionary > Delete learned words or Privacy > Delete learned words and data.
How do I delete all learned words on Android?
Open Gboard Settings, tap Dictionary, choose Delete learned words, enter the confirmation number shown, and tap OK. Some versions instead show Privacy > Delete learned words and data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I clear Gboard’s dictionary on an iPhone?
Open the Gboard app, choose Keyboard settings, tap Clear my dictionary, and confirm. If Gboard came with the Google app, use Google app > Settings > Gboard > Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary.
Can I remove only one unwanted suggestion on iOS?
Yes. Touch and hold the suggestion in the suggestion strip and confirm its removal. This avoids clearing the entire dictionary.
Is there one Android switch that stops every kind of Gboard learning?
The documented controls are separate. Review Personalise for you, federated learning, and Privacy > Voice > Audio donations individually; no single switch is documented as disabling all of them.
Are learned words sent to Google?
Google’s Android and iOS help pages say saved learned words are stored only on the device and are not sent to Google. The same documentation separately discusses categories such as searches, usage statistics, and voice input used for transcription.
The Bottom Line
On Android, turn off Privacy > Personalise for you to limit future personalization, then separately delete learned words if you want them erased. On iPhone or iPad, use Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary; remove individual suggestions by touching and holding them. Review federated learning and audio donations separately because no single control covers every documented learning or sharing function.
