First find out whether the distortion is present in Windows playback or only in the stream or recording. If Windows audio is distorted too, troubleshoot the device, Windows settings, driver, and audio services. If Windows playback sounds clean, focus on the streaming app’s source and audio levels; in OBS, a signal that exceeds 0 dBFS clips.
Find where the distortion starts
Play audio outside your streaming app, then compare it with a stream or recording. If the app offers local audio monitoring, compare that as well. This separates a Windows playback problem from one introduced by the app’s capture or mix path.
- Distorted outside the streaming app: Start with the Windows output device or, if the affected sound is your microphone, the Windows input device.
- Clean in Windows but distorted in the stream or recording: Check which source the app captures, any filters or monitoring path, and the source and mix levels.
- Only one app or source is affected: Check that app’s selected device and source before changing system-wide settings.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test. That makes it easier to identify which change actually affects the sound.

Turn off audio enhancements
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the affected output device and open its audio enhancements control.
- Turn enhancements off, then replay the same audio to test. Microsoft says enhancements can cause distortion or crackling on some devices. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide includes this as an initial check.
If a microphone is the affected source, select the input device instead and use Windows’ microphone test to record and play a sample. Test the input before adjusting streaming-app filters.

Try a different available audio format
Open the selected output device’s advanced settings and choose a different format from the options Windows offers. Test the audio again. Microsoft lists an unsupported or incorrect format as a possible cause, but does not prescribe one sample rate or bit depth for all devices. Use formats supported by your device and app rather than assuming a particular value is universally best. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps describe trying another available format.
Update, reinstall, or roll back the audio driver
- Check Settings > Windows Update for available audio driver updates.
- If Windows Update does not offer a suitable driver, identify the audio device in Device Manager and check the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and a Windows 11 driver.
- If the problem began after an update, consider rolling the driver back. Reinstalling the driver or trying a generic Windows driver may also be appropriate, depending on the device and its manufacturer’s guidance.
Microsoft documents these later-stage options in its Windows audio troubleshooting guide and instructions for updating drivers through Device Manager. Prefer the manufacturer’s Windows 11 driver when needed, and follow model-specific support instructions.

Restart Windows audio services
If the distortion continues, Microsoft lists restarting the Windows audio services as a possible fix for temporary sound issues:
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - In Services, restart Windows Audio, then Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Test playback again.

Fix distortion that happens only in the stream or recording
Check for clipping in OBS
If you use OBS, watch the relevant source and mixer meters while reproducing the problem. OBS explains that the maximum digital level is 0 dBFS; audio above that ceiling in a stream or recording clips and sounds distorted. If a meter reaches the ceiling, reduce the offending source or filter gain, or lower the mix level, then make another test recording. OBS Project’s audio mixer documentation explains the clipping threshold. This points to a level problem in the capture or mix path, not necessarily a faulty Windows driver.
Confirm OBS is capturing the intended device
Check that the affected source uses the intended microphone or output device. OBS lets you add a microphone or output device as an audio source; verify the device selection and test that source on its own. OBS Project’s audio sources guide describes these source types and a Windows-only device timestamp option intended to help prevent desynchronization. Device selection or timestamp checks can help identify a source or sync issue, but they are not guaranteed fixes for distortion.

For another streaming application, inspect its own source selection, filters, monitoring, and meters. OBS documentation describes OBS controls specifically; it does not establish that every app uses equivalent settings.
Use timing and scope to narrow the cause
Note whether the sound is distorted immediately or only after extended operation, and whether it affects output audio, microphone input, one captured app, or every source. These clues help limit what to test; timing alone does not establish a cause. Change one relevant setting at a time, then compare a new playback sample or test recording with the original conditions.

Neither Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance nor OBS’s audio documentation establishes one sample rate, bit depth, or setting that prevents distortion across Windows 11 devices and streaming setups. Test only formats available for your device and follow the requirements of the device and app. If the sound remains distorted after the relevant settings, driver, service, and app-level checks, the cited guidance does not identify a universal hardware fix; consult support for the exact PC or audio device.
