Most clip-on earbud connection failures are fixed in this order: charge both earbuds and the case, verify that each earbud is actually making contact in the case, disconnect nearby devices that may have reclaimed the connection, then forget the saved Bluetooth entry and pair again using the exact model’s instructions. If pairing works but audio still cuts out, reduce distance and obstructions and test a less demanding Bluetooth codec when the model offers one.
The sequence matters. A flat battery, dirty charging contact, or an earbud silently connected to another phone can look exactly like a Bluetooth fault. Work through the checks below before attempting a factory reset or buying replacement hardware.
Identify what is failing first
“Won’t pair,” “won’t connect,” and “keeps disconnecting” describe different points in the connection process. Use the symptom that best matches what you see.

| What you see | Most useful first check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Neither earbud appears in Bluetooth settings | Charge the case and earbuds, then enter the model’s pairing mode | The earbuds may be off, already connected elsewhere, or not advertising |
| One earbud appears, but the other is silent | Check that the silent side shows a charging indicator and is seated on the correct contacts | A charging or earbud-to-earbud synchronization problem is more likely than a phone fault |
| The earbuds pair, then drop repeatedly | Move the source device closer and disconnect other remembered devices | Interference, obstruction, multipoint switching, or a high-rate codec may be involved |
| The earbuds never show a charging light | Inspect and dry the contacts, case port, and earbud charging area | Bluetooth troubleshooting cannot fix an earbud that is not powering on |
| A reset appears to work, but the old device will not reconnect | Delete the saved Bluetooth entry and pair as a new device | A factory reset probably erased the previous pairing record |
1. Confirm power and charging before touching Bluetooth settings
Put the left and right earbuds into the correspondingly marked sides of the case. Close and reopen the lid, and look for the case or earbud indicator described in the manual. Charge the case from a known-good cable and adapter, then leave the earbuds in the case long enough for their indicators to show that charging has started.

Check physical contact
- Remove visible lint or debris from the case wells and the earbud charging contacts using only the cleaning method specified by the manufacturer.
- Make sure each earbud is fully seated; a clip or wing can prevent the contacts from touching if the earbud is inserted at an angle.
- Do not charge wet earbuds. Sony warns that foreign matter, sweat, or moisture around an earbud charging port can affect or prevent charging. See its support instructions for the relevant model: Sony pairing and charging support.
- Test the case with another suitable cable or power source if the case indicator never responds.
If one side never shows a charging indication while the other does, stop repeating pairing attempts. Solve the one-sided charging problem first; an earbud with no usable charge cannot enter pairing mode or maintain a connection.
2. Remove competing connections
A previously paired phone, tablet, laptop, or television can reconnect before the device you are trying to use. Turn Bluetooth off temporarily on nearby devices that have used the earbuds, or open their Bluetooth menus and disconnect the earbuds. Keep only the intended source active during the next pairing attempt.
Some products support multipoint, but switching rules differ. A model may hold two links, switch only when audio starts, or give priority to the most recently used device. Do not assume that a clip-on design supports simultaneous connections. The Raycon Everyday Clip manual, for example, includes a model-specific multipoint section; it is not a universal Bluetooth behavior. Consult the Raycon Everyday Clip user manual for that product’s rules.
3. Start a completely fresh pairing
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or computer and remove, forget, or delete the saved entry for the earbuds. The label varies by operating system.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. If the device list looks stale, leave the Bluetooth screen and open it again.
- Use the exact model’s procedure to put the earbuds into pairing mode. Do not substitute a button hold or touch gesture from another brand.
- Wait for the matching model name, then select it once. If several similarly named entries appear, confirm the name in the manual or on the case rather than guessing.
- Allow the connection to finish before opening another audio app. A first connection may take longer while the phone creates a new pairing record.
Example: ACCENTUM Clip
Sennheiser’s ACCENTUM Clip instructions say to restart or update the smartphone, charge the earbuds, hold both earbud touch controls for three seconds until the pairing prompt is heard, and select “ACCENTUM Clip.” Those steps apply to that model, not to every clip-on earbud. Follow the current Sennheiser ACCENTUM Clip troubleshooting guide if your earbuds are that model.

If the device still does not appear
Turn Bluetooth off and on once more, close and reopen the Bluetooth settings page, and restart the source device. Sony lists those actions for situations in which its headphones do not appear after pairing mode is activated. Its support article, modified August 12, 2026, is available at Sony support.
4. Restart first; use a factory reset only when necessary
A restart or simple reset clears a temporary software state. A factory reset normally erases stored pairing information and sometimes customized settings. Treat them as different operations.
| Operation | Use it when | Pairing data |
|---|---|---|
| Source-device restart | Bluetooth menus are stale, the phone has stopped discovering devices, or the connection disappeared after an operating-system change | Saved phone entries remain |
| Earbud simple reset or restart | The earbuds are powered but one side, controls, or connection state is stuck | Often retained, but model-specific |
| Factory reset | The documented simple reset did not clear the fault, or the manufacturer specifically directs it | Usually erased; the old entry must be forgotten before pairing again |
Sennheiser says the ACCENTUM Clip simple reset retains pairing, while its factory reset removes pairing information. After that factory reset, delete the old device entry from the phone and pair again. The model’s reset details are in Sennheiser’s reset guide.

Reset gestures vary sharply. JLab’s Flex Open uses a case-button procedure rather than Sennheiser’s two-touch-control gesture. Use the steps in the JLab Flex Open pairing and operation guide, and avoid pressing random combinations that could trigger a different function.

5. Fix disconnections that happen after successful pairing
Reduce distance and obstructions
For the test, keep the phone or computer close to the earbuds and remove obvious obstacles such as a bag, metal container, or another body between the source and the earbuds. Walk around only after stable playback has been established. If the connection becomes reliable at short range, the original problem was environmental or related to the radio path rather than the saved pairing record.
Disconnect unused devices
Leave other previously paired devices’ Bluetooth radios off during testing. This prevents an automatic reconnection from making the earbuds appear to drop at random. Re-enable those devices one at a time afterward so you can identify which one is taking the connection.
Test the available codec options
Some earbuds and phones offer more than one Bluetooth audio codec. Sennheiser specifically notes that high-rate LDAC operation on ACCENTUM Clip is more sensitive to interference and connection conditions; its guidance is to reduce distance and obstructions or try AAC or SBC if available. This is model- and phone-dependent advice: do not assume that every clip-on earbud supports LDAC, AAC, or a user-selectable codec. The relevant instructions are in Sennheiser’s ACCENTUM Clip problem guide.
6. Check the phone or computer after the earbuds pass their own tests
Once both earbuds show charge and can enter pairing mode, isolate the source device:

- Restart the phone, tablet, or computer.
- Install any pending operating-system update that the device manufacturer provides.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, then remove duplicate or obsolete entries for the same earbuds.
- Pair with no other Bluetooth audio accessory connected.
- Test a short local audio file or system sound before testing a streaming app.
If the earbuds work with a second source, the original phone or computer is the likely cause. Check its Bluetooth permissions, audio-output selector, and saved-device list. If they fail identically on multiple sources after a documented reset, the earbuds or case deserve service attention.
Charging-path troubleshooting when one side will not wake
One dead side is commonly a power-path problem rather than a pairing problem. Remove the earbud, inspect its contacts and the matching case contacts, and ensure both surfaces are dry. Reseat it until the indicator responds. Do not scrape contacts with a sharp object or apply liquid unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
Charge the case fully, then repeat the test with the lid closed. If the case itself does not indicate charging, try a compatible cable and power source. If the case charges but one earbud never indicates charge, document which side fails and contact the maker or seller; a replacement case or earbud must match the exact model.

When hardware failure is the most likely explanation
Contact the manufacturer or authorized seller when any of these conditions remains after the documented charging and reset steps:
- The case will not accept or show a charge with a known-good compatible cable and power source.
- One earbud never shows a charging indication even after careful reseating and cleaning.
- The earbuds cannot enter pairing mode on more than one source device.
- A factory reset completes, but the earbuds remain undiscoverable and unresponsive.
- The case, contacts, or earbud has visible physical or liquid damage.
Provide the exact model, the side that fails, indicator behavior, cable or charger used, source devices tested, and the reset procedure you followed. Do not order a generic earbud or case: charging contacts, firmware, and pairing behavior are model-specific.
Should you replace the earbuds?
Replacement is reasonable when the case or an earbud has a persistent hardware fault, repair is unavailable, or the product is outside support coverage. Buying another pair will not solve a phone that keeps reconnecting to the wrong device or interference that affects every headset, so test with a second source before spending money.
Compare replacement candidates on the factors that affect this problem:
Quick Recap
- Fit and retention: confirm that the clip sits securely without pressing the charging contacts or controls during use.
- Source compatibility: check support for the phone or computer’s Bluetooth version and required audio features.
- Case reliability: look for clear charge indicators, accessible contacts, and a documented reset procedure.
- Support and warranty: verify the service region, warranty term, and availability of model-compatible replacement parts.
- Multipoint behavior: if you switch between devices, confirm whether simultaneous connections are supported and how priority changes.
Prevent the next pairing failure
- Keep the case charged instead of storing earbuds until both sides are empty.
- Seat each earbud fully and check for a charging indication before closing the case.
- Keep contacts dry and clean them only with the method in the manual.
- Turn off Bluetooth on devices that should not reclaim the earbuds.
- Keep the model’s pairing and reset instructions accessible; gestures are not universal.
- Use a lower-rate codec or shorter distance in environments where the manufacturer identifies high-rate audio as interference-sensitive.
- Record the exact model and firmware or app version when contacting support.
A quick decision path
- No indicator: troubleshoot the case, cable, contacts, and moisture before Bluetooth.
- Indicators present, no device listed: disconnect competing devices, forget the old entry, and activate the model’s pairing mode.
- Device listed but connection fails: restart the source and earbuds, then perform the documented simple reset.
- Still impossible: use a factory reset only if the manual directs it, delete the old entry, and pair again.
- Pairs but drops: reduce distance and obstructions, disconnect other devices, and test an available lower-rate codec.
- Failure persists everywhere: treat it as a likely hardware or support issue and contact the manufacturer.
