You can exit Chrome’s current full-screen view, but Chrome’s consumer help pages do not document a permanent off switch for ordinary users. Press the shortcut for your device to leave full screen. If a website or app keeps requesting it, that is a separate behavior; on organization-managed devices, an administrator can control fullscreen through Chrome’s enterprise policy.
First, identify which kind of full screen you’re seeing
Chrome can appear full screen in two different ways. One is the browser window’s full-screen mode, which hides its usual controls. The other is a website’s content—such as a video, game, or web app—entering full screen. The exit shortcut can leave the current view, but figuring out which one is reappearing helps identify what to do next.
Exit Chrome’s current full-screen view
Use the shortcut for your operating system. These actions turn off full screen for the current view; they do not disable the shortcut or prevent full screen from being entered again.

- Mac: Press Fn+f, or press and hold Esc. Keyboard behavior can vary by configuration.
- Chromebook: Use the dedicated full-screen key shown for your device on Google’s Chrome keyboard shortcuts page. Chromebook keyboards vary, so the Windows F11 instruction should not be assumed to apply.
If you entered full screen by accident, pressing the same toggle again may restore the previous view. See Google’s instructions for turning off full-screen mode.

If a website or app keeps going full screen
A website can request full-screen display for its content through the browser’s Fullscreen API. Google’s developer explanation names requestFullscreen() to enter full screen and document.exitFullscreen() to leave it. This describes the website-content behavior, not a universal Chrome setting for blocking every site.
- Exit the current full-screen view using the shortcut for your device.
- If only the site’s video, game, or app returns to full screen, check whether you are activating its own full-screen control or a behavior within the app.
- If this is a managed work or school device, ask the administrator whether the organization’s fullscreen policy can be changed.
Google’s general site permissions help covers many permission controls but does not document a universal user-facing setting to block fullscreen. Clearing site data or changing unrelated permissions is not established as a permanent fullscreen fix. Chrome release notes have also described an automatic-fullscreen content setting for enterprise administrators and a site-settings option for Isolated Web Apps; that is not a general toggle for every website.

What managed-device administrators can control
Google’s Chrome Enterprise Fullscreen mode policy specifies whether, with appropriate permissions, users, apps, and extensions can use fullscreen mode. Google says the default is to allow it. The policy applies to managed ChromeOS devices and Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Changing it requires administrator access; a user without that access should contact their organization’s administrator.

For an ordinary personal Chrome installation, the reviewed consumer help pages document ways to exit full screen, not a permanent-off switch. An exit shortcut changes the current state and remains available to toggle it again. A site’s fullscreen request is a distinct path, while the documented policy control is for managed environments.
