To stop new ChatGPT conversations on a personal account from being used to improve OpenAI’s models, open Settings → Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. The preference applies across devices when you are signed in. It does not delete existing chats, and sending thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can still allow the associated conversation to be used for model improvement on individual plans.
Turn off model improvement in ChatGPT
Use the setting below for an account-level opt-out while keeping your normal chat history:
- Open ChatGPT and open the account or profile menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
After you opt out, OpenAI says that new conversations will not be used to train its models. The switch does not erase chats already stored in your account or remove them from the history interface.

- Open the ChatGPT app and open the sidebar.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
The label and location can change as the app is updated. Look specifically for the control named Improve the model for everyone under Data controls, rather than a general privacy or history switch.

On the web when you are signed in
The preference is associated with your account. Once it is changed, it applies to that account on other devices where you sign in. If another browser or phone still appears to allow model improvement, confirm that it is using the same account and reload the settings page.
When you use ChatGPT while signed out
Open the ChatGPT settings and turn off the same control. OpenAI says a signed-out choice is saved in that browser. It is not an account-wide preference, so using another browser, clearing site data, or switching devices may require you to set it again.
What switching off the setting changes
Improve the model for everyone controls the use of new conversations for model improvement. It is an opt-out from that particular use, not a complete data-erasure command.
- New conversations: OpenAI says they are not used to train its models after you opt out.
- Saved history: Regular chats, archived chats, and project conversations can remain visible in your history.
- Personalization: Normal account personalization can continue; opting out does not automatically remove memories, custom instructions, or other account settings.
- Deletion: You must delete chats separately if you want them removed from your account view.
OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ summarizes the distinction this way: “Your conversations will still appear in your chat history but won’t be used to train ChatGPT.”
The feedback exception you should know before opting out
On individual plans, submitting feedback on a response can change how that conversation is handled. If you click a thumbs-up or thumbs-down button, OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve its models even after you have turned off Improve the model for everyone.
That means the opt-out is not absolute for a conversation you deliberately attach to response feedback. If keeping a conversation out of model improvement is important, do not submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on that conversation after opting out. This exception applies to the conversation connected to the feedback, not just the short comment you may type with it.
Use Temporary Chat when you do not want history or memories
Turning off the account setting is the right choice when you want ordinary chats to remain in history but not be used for model improvement. Temporary Chat is a different tool for a different outcome: it is designed for an individual conversation that should not appear in history and should not create or update memories.

What Temporary Chat does
- Temporary chats are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary.
- They do not appear in your normal chat history.
- They do not create or update memories.
- OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
The 30-day period is a maximum stated safety-retention period, not a promise that every copy is deleted at exactly the same moment. Safety, security, and legal requirements can affect how data is handled.
Choose the personalization level when starting one
A Temporary Chat can still be personalized when you start it. Depending on the option you choose, it may use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins. If you want the least personalization possible, select the non-personalized option when starting the temporary conversation.
Do not save a Temporary Chat by accident
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat. Once converted, it follows your account’s normal history, personalization, and model-improvement settings. Saving it therefore defeats the purpose of keeping that conversation outside history and should be treated as a deliberate change, not a harmless export.
Delete chats separately when removal is your goal
Use chat deletion when you want a conversation removed from your account view. Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete saved chats, and starting a Temporary Chat does not remove a regular chat that already exists.

- The chat is removed from your account view immediately.
- OpenAI says it is scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days.
- Exceptions can apply if the data has already been de-identified and disassociated or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations.
The 30-day period is a scheduled deletion window, not an unconditional guarantee that every copy disappears exactly within 30 days. Deletion and model-improvement controls address different actions: one removes a saved conversation from your account and starts the deletion process, while the other controls the use of new conversations for model improvement.
When to use deletion, opt-out, or both

Personal accounts and work or school workspaces are different
OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Managed workspaces still have organization settings, access policies, and retention rules. Your administrator may control options that are not available to an individual user.
If you use a work or school account, do not assume the personal-account switch is a universal override. Check your workspace’s guidance or ask the administrator which retention and data-use policies apply. A personal ChatGPT preference cannot replace an organization’s controls.

Codex has an additional environment setting
On personal ChatGPT plans, the Improve the model for everyone setting also applies to Codex tasks. However, Codex has a separate Include environments setting that controls whether additional environment context can be used for training.
Changing the ChatGPT Data controls setting does not change Include environments. If you use Codex and want to control environment context separately, review both settings rather than assuming one toggle covers them all.
Common mistakes and how to check your setup
Confusing chat history with model training
A chat remaining in the sidebar does not mean the opt-out failed. The setting is designed to stop new conversations from being used for model improvement while allowing those conversations to remain in your history. Delete the chat only if you also want it removed from the account view.
Changing the setting on the wrong account
Signed-in preferences follow the account, not the device. If the setting appears different on another device, compare the signed-in email or account identity before changing anything. A signed-out setting is browser-specific and does not automatically follow you elsewhere.
Using Temporary Chat but then saving it
Saving converts a Temporary Chat into a regular chat. If the conversation must stay outside history and memory, leave it temporary and do not use a save action.

Thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can trigger the individual-plan exception. Avoid feedback on conversations you intend to keep outside model improvement, even if the account-level switch is already off.
Assuming deletion is immediate everywhere
Deletion removes the conversation from your account view immediately, but permanent system deletion is scheduled within 30 days and has de-identification, security, and legal exceptions. Do not treat the disappearance from the sidebar as proof that every underlying copy has already been erased.

How to verify the right control is active
- Return to Settings → Data controls after changing the switch and confirm that Improve the model for everyone remains off.
- Check the account identity shown in the profile menu on each device. A setting changed while signed in applies to that account, not to every account used on the device.
- If you use ChatGPT signed out, repeat the check in each browser where you use it. The preference is stored in that browser and can be lost when site data is cleared.
- Do not use a thumbs-up or thumbs-down control on a conversation you want covered by the opt-out, because the feedback exception can apply to the entire associated conversation.
- For a conversation that must stay out of history, start a new Temporary Chat instead of relying only on the account switch, and do not save it afterward.
These checks help distinguish a settings problem from an expected result. Seeing a saved chat in history is normal after opting out; it is not evidence that the setting is being ignored.
Which control fits common privacy goals?
You want searchable history but no model-improvement use for new chats
Turn off Improve the model for everyone. This is the broadest personal-account choice because it covers new conversations while preserving ordinary history and account features. Delete older chats separately if they should no longer appear in your account.
You are discussing something sensitive once
Start a Temporary Chat. It will not be listed in normal history, will not create or update memories, and will not be used for model improvement while it remains temporary. Choose the non-personalized option if you do not want existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins used in that conversation. Remember that OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days.
You already have a sensitive chat saved
Delete that saved chat; changing the account opt-out alone does not remove it. The chat should disappear from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification, security, and legal exceptions.
You use a company or school workspace
Ask the administrator which workspace policy applies. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare content is not used to train models by default, but retention, access, and organization controls still govern the account. The personal-account toggle is not a substitute for those policies.
You use Codex with personal ChatGPT
Apply the ChatGPT Data controls choice and then review Include environments. The second setting is separate and can affect whether extra environment context is available for training.

- For all future personal chats: turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings → Data controls.
- For a one-off sensitive conversation: start a Temporary Chat and select the non-personalized option if you do not want existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins used.
- For chats already saved: delete each relevant chat separately.
- For conversations with feedback: remember that thumbs-up or thumbs-down may permit use of the associated conversation for model improvement on an individual plan.
- For work or school use: follow the workspace administrator’s policy instead of relying on a personal-account setting.
- For Codex: review Include environments in addition to the ChatGPT Data controls setting.
What this setting cannot guarantee
- It does not erase saved chats from your history.
- It does not remove memories, custom instructions, or other personalization settings.
- It does not override organization-level controls in managed workspaces.
- It does not change Codex’s separate Include environments control.
- It does not prevent the individual-plan feedback exception for a conversation connected to thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback.
- It does not promise that deleted data disappears from every system immediately; the stated deletion schedule includes exceptions.

Does turning off Improve the model for everyone delete my existing conversations?

Does the setting apply to my phone and computer?

No. Turning off the account setting keeps ordinary chats in history while excluding new conversations from model improvement. Temporary Chat is intended for an individual conversation that should not appear in history or create or update memories. It may still be retained for safety for up to 30 days.
What happens if I save a Temporary Chat?

Can a Temporary Chat use my existing personalization?

Does the ChatGPT setting cover Codex environment data?
The model-improvement setting applies to Codex tasks on personal ChatGPT plans, but Codex also has a separate Include environments setting for additional environment context. Review both controls.
