ChatGPT does not automatically read ordinary Chrome tabs. Your open tabs become relevant when you approve or use the Codex Chrome extension, which is designed to work with an existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs and Chrome extensions. To prevent that access, stop the Chrome-extension connection, disable or remove the extension, and use ChatGPT’s desktop built-in browser or cloud browser instead.
When can ChatGPT access Chrome tabs?
The key distinction is the browser path you choose. A normal ChatGPT conversation and the separate cloud browser do not automatically inherit the tabs, cookies, history or sign-ins from your personal Chrome window. The documented route for using an existing Chrome profile or its open tabs is the Codex Chrome extension.
If ChatGPT asks to use your Chrome profile, current signed-in session, open tabs or Chrome extensions, you are being offered that extension-based path. If you do not want those resources available, decline the request and do not continue the connection.

OpenAI’s cloud-browser documentation says that mode does not use your personal browser’s open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions or existing sign-ins. The desktop built-in browser is likewise a separate browser state. The extension is different because its purpose is to work with the Chrome environment you already have open.

Stop the Chrome connection
- Identify the request. If the task mentions an existing Chrome profile, a signed-in Chrome session, open tabs or Chrome extensions, treat it as an extension connection rather than the separate built-in or cloud browser.
- Decline the approval prompt. Choose the option that cancels, declines or continues without Chrome. Do not approve a request merely to dismiss it; approval is what allows the extension path to be used for that task.
- End the current task. If a task is already connected to Chrome, stop it before starting another request. Closing a tab does not necessarily revoke an extension connection that remains enabled.
- Disable or remove the extension in Chrome. Open Chrome’s extensions management screen, locate the Codex Chrome extension and switch it off or remove it. Chrome’s exact labels and layout can vary by operating system and release, so use the extension’s own Disable or Remove control rather than relying on a particular menu name.
- Restart from an isolated browser. Reopen the task in ChatGPT’s desktop built-in browser or select the cloud browser. Both use browser state separate from your personal Chrome session.
OpenAI documents the extension as the route for existing Chrome tabs, but does not publish one universal Chrome-menu sequence for every operating system and rollout. If you cannot find the extension or its controls, continue with the account and workspace checks below.
Use ChatGPT’s separate browser instead
Desktop built-in browser
The ChatGPT desktop app has a built-in browser with its own browser state. Open the task there instead of asking it to use your Chrome profile. This keeps the task’s pages, cookies and sign-ins separate from the tabs in your normal Chrome window.
If the task does not need website interaction, you can also avoid browser tools entirely. Do not grant a site or app permission simply because the task might later need it.

Cloud browser
The cloud browser runs separately from the browser on your device. It does not use your personal open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions or existing sign-ins. This is the clearest choice when you want a browser session that cannot inherit your local Chrome state.

Because the cloud session is separate, you may need to sign in again or provide information within that session. That inconvenience is the trade-off for keeping your local Chrome profile out of the task.
Turn off site tools in the desktop app
Site tools are documented as a feature of the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser, not Chrome. If you do not want the built-in browser to use those tools, disable them:
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Open Browser settings.
- Select Permissions.
- Turn off Enable site tools.
This setting controls whether the built-in browser can use site tools. It is separate from disabling the Codex Chrome extension. Turning off site tools does not by itself remove a Chrome extension or disconnect an account that was already connected.

Disconnect an app or account connected to ChatGPT
A Chrome tab may be reached through an account or app connection rather than through a new approval prompt. To remove that route:

- In ChatGPT, open Settings.
- Open Plugins or Apps; the label depends on the interface you receive.
- Select the relevant app or connection.
- Open its account or connection menu.
- Choose Disconnect and confirm if prompted.
Disconnecting stops future access through that particular account connection. It does not necessarily remove a different connected account, an administrator-managed connection or a separate browser-extension installation. Check each connection shown in your account and repeat the process where necessary.
Approval and disconnection are different controls
These controls solve different problems:
- Approval settings determine whether ChatGPT can ask to use a browser, site tool or connected service. They affect future prompts.
- Disconnection removes an account-based path that has already been linked. It prevents future use through that connection, but does not automatically remove other links.
- Extension removal disables the Chrome-side software that can work with the existing profile and tabs.
For the strongest separation, decline new Chrome requests, disable or remove the extension, disconnect related accounts and run the task in the cloud or built-in browser.
How to verify that Chrome is no longer being used
- The task opens in the desktop built-in browser or cloud browser rather than asking for an existing Chrome profile.
- No approval prompt requests your current Chrome tabs, signed-in session or Chrome extensions.
- The Codex Chrome extension is disabled or absent in Chrome’s extensions manager.
- The relevant entry under ChatGPT’s Plugins or Apps settings shows no active account connection.
- Browser settings show Enable site tools turned off if you do not want site tools in the desktop app.
- Pages that were open only in your personal Chrome window do not appear in the new browser session; you must open or sign in to pages again if the separate session requires them.
Troubleshooting when a control is missing
You cannot find the extension
Look in Chrome’s extensions management screen, not only in the toolbar. If it is absent there, the task may be using the built-in or cloud browser instead. Check whether ChatGPT is explicitly requesting your existing profile or open tabs before changing other settings.
The browser settings do not show “Enable site tools”
That switch is documented for the desktop app’s built-in browser. It may not appear in a web session, a different ChatGPT surface or an account that has not received the feature. Interface wording can change as the product rolls out.

Disconnect is unavailable
Availability can depend on your plan, region, account, selected surface and workspace policy. A workspace administrator may manage the connection, so you might need an administrator to remove it or to change the available permission.
ChatGPT still asks for Chrome access
A prompt can come from a new task even after you declined an earlier one. Confirm that the extension remains disabled, then choose the separate built-in or cloud browser. If an account connection remains under Settings, disconnect it as well.

The available documentation identifies the Codex Chrome extension as the path for using an existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs and Chrome extensions. It does not publish a single universal statement that every tab is always read or a universal Chrome permission screen that applies to every installation. Treat an approved extension connection as access to the Chrome environment needed for the task, and do not approve it when your requirement is that personal tabs remain out of scope.

Availability and changing interface labels
OpenAI says browser and connection features can vary by plan, region, account, model, product surface and workspace settings. The names Plugins, Apps, Browser settings and permission controls may therefore differ from what another user sees. A missing control is not proof that Chrome is being accessed; first identify which browser mode the task is using.
The safest rule remains stable even when labels change: do not approve a request for your existing Chrome profile, disable the Codex Chrome extension, disconnect any related account, and use a separate browser state for the task.
Quick decision guide
- You want zero access to local Chrome state: use the cloud browser, keep the extension disabled and do not approve Chrome-profile requests.
- You want ChatGPT’s desktop browser but no site tools: use the built-in browser and turn off Enable site tools under Browser settings > Permissions.
- You previously linked an app or account: disconnect it under Settings > Plugins or Settings > Apps.
- You need a tab that is already open in Chrome: that is the use case documented for the Codex Chrome extension; approving it means accepting the associated Chrome-profile connection.
