There is no single switch that prevents every app from collecting or sharing personal information. You can, however, sharply limit the forms of cross-company tracking and ad-related processing controlled by your phone, remove permissions an app does not need, inspect its disclosures, and use the app provider’s own privacy and deletion controls. These steps restrict particular access and advertising mechanisms; they do not automatically erase information a provider already holds or govern every use inside its service.
What you can—and cannot—stop
Phone privacy settings work at different layers. A system tracking control can block a platform identifier or a defined type of cross-company tracking. A permission controls whether an app can read a category such as contacts, photos, location, or a calendar. An account setting governs what the provider does with information already associated with your account. These are separate controls, so changing one does not replace the others.
- Tracking controls limit specific advertising and measurement mechanisms used across companies.
- Advertising controls adjust topics, ad suggestions, or measurement features supplied by the operating-system platform.
- App permissions reduce the information an app can access on the device.
- Provider controls handle an account’s advertising preferences and requests to delete previously collected information.
You may still see advertisements after making these changes. The realistic goal is to reduce identifiable data sharing and personalization, not to guarantee that every advertisement disappears or that no provider processes personal information.
iPhone and iPad: turn off cross-company tracking
1. Change each app’s tracking permission
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- Review the list of apps that have requested tracking.
- Turn tracking off for any app you do not want to allow.
Apple’s tracking permission framework covers linking identifying information from an app with information from other companies’ apps, websites, or offline properties for targeted advertising or advertising measurement, as well as sharing that information with data brokers. Apple Support states: “All apps are required to ask your permission before tracking you or your iPhone across websites or apps owned by other companies for advertising or to share your information with data brokers.” That statement applies to Apple’s tracking-permission system, not to every form of data collection by every app.

2. Stop future tracking prompts
On the same screen, switch off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apple says an app that tries to request tracking while this setting is off is treated as though you selected Ask App Not to Track. You can still revisit the list later and change a previously granted choice.
When tracking is denied, Apple says the app is restricted from accessing the system advertising identifier and from using other identifying information, such as an email address, for the tracking covered by the framework. The restriction does not mean the app is unable to collect information needed to provide its own service.
3. Enable App Privacy Report
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
- Tap to turn the report on.
- Use your apps normally, then return to the report to inspect the activity it has recorded.
The report begins gathering information only after you enable it. Apple’s report shows permission access and network activity for the previous seven days, so an empty or incomplete report immediately after activation is expected. A domain appearing in network activity is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the app shared your data with an advertiser; many services contact infrastructure needed for sign-in, content delivery, analytics, or security.
4. Remove permissions an app does not need
Under Settings > Privacy & Security, open categories such as Contacts, Photos, Calendars, microphone, camera, and location. Set an app to None or otherwise reduce access when the permission is not necessary for a feature you use. For example, a photo editor may need selected photos but not your entire library; a calendar app may need calendar access but not your contacts.

Expect a feature to stop working when it genuinely depends on a permission. You can grant access temporarily, use a narrower option such as selected photos when offered, or leave the permission off and use a different feature.
Android: manage ad privacy and the advertising ID
1. Turn off Android’s ad-privacy features
- Open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy.
- Open Ad topics and turn the feature off or remove individual topics.
- Open App-suggested ads and block apps from suggesting ads when that option is available.
- Open Ad measurement and turn it off if you do not want Android’s measurement mechanism enabled.
These controls apply to Android’s own ad-topics, app-suggested-ads, and ad-measurement mechanisms. Menu names and availability can vary by Android release, manufacturer, managed-device policy, and account configuration. If a path differs, search Settings for Ads or Ads privacy and look for the same three controls.
2. Delete the device’s advertising ID when the option exists
On devices that expose the control, open Settings > Privacy > Ads and choose the option to delete the advertising ID. Google Play developer guidance says that, on applicable Google Play services implementations, attempts to access the deleted ID return zeros. The exact wording and behavior depend on the Android version and device, so treat the menu as a device-specific control rather than a universal Android promise.

3. Review Android app permissions
- Open Settings > Privacy or Settings > Apps, then select an app.
- Tap Permissions.
- Set unnecessary categories—such as contacts, photos and videos, microphone, camera, or location—to Don’t allow, or choose a narrower option when offered.
Android can also remove permissions from unused apps on supported versions. Review that setting if you install an app rarely but do not want it retaining access indefinitely. If you no longer trust an app’s collection practices, uninstalling it stops future activity from that installation; it does not automatically remove information the provider previously received.
Use the app’s own privacy and deletion controls
Device settings cannot change every choice made inside a third-party service. Sign in to the app or its website and look for menus named Privacy, Advertising, Data controls, Personalization, Account, or Delete account. Disable personalized advertising, targeted-ad preferences, contact-upload features, or data-sharing choices that you do not want.
If you want information already collected to be deleted, use the in-app deletion request when one exists. If the app does not provide that option, contact its developer through the support address or privacy contact listed in the app’s documentation. Apple distinguishes device privacy settings from third-party account settings: you must sign in to the third-party account to change the latter. Google Play gives the same practical direction when deletion cannot be requested in the app.

Keep a record of what you requested and when. A deletion request may remove an account or selected data while a provider retains limited records required for fraud prevention, security, legal compliance, or transaction records under its policy. The provider’s response—not the phone’s permission screen—determines what happened to previously stored data.

On both platforms, a system setting, a permission, and an account-level choice address different stages of data use. Apply all three when your goal is to reduce both future access and the provider’s ability to associate activity with you.
Read app-store privacy disclosures without treating them as guarantees
Apple App Store privacy information
Use the app’s App Privacy section to see the data categories the developer reports collecting, whether data is linked to you, and whether it is used for tracking. Apple says this information is self-reported by developers. It is useful evidence for deciding whether to install or keep an app, but it is not an independent audit proving that the app never shares data.
Google Play Data safety
Google Play’s Data safety section is also developer-provided. Compare it with the app’s privacy policy and documentation, especially when the app requests a sensitive permission or offers advertising personalization. A disclosure can describe declared practices, while the permission screen shows what the installed app can access on your device; neither one replaces a provider’s account-level deletion process.
Questions to ask before keeping an app
- Does the app request contacts, photos, microphone, camera, or location for a feature you actually use?
- Does its disclosure mention data linked to you, tracking, advertising, or sharing with third parties?
- Can you turn off personalized advertising without deleting the account?
- Is there a clear way to request deletion, and does the policy explain what may be retained?
- Would a less invasive app provide the same function?
A practical privacy audit you can repeat
- Start with the operating system. On Apple devices, review Tracking and enable App Privacy Report. On Android, review Ads privacy and the advertising-ID option if present.
- Sort apps by sensitivity. Begin with social, shopping, finance, health, dating, keyboard, photo, and location-based apps because they commonly handle information that can be associated with an account or identity.
- Check permissions one app at a time. Remove access that is not required for the feature you use. Recheck after an app update because a new feature may request a new category.
- Inspect recent activity. On iPhone and iPad, wait until App Privacy Report has collected enough activity to show a meaningful seven-day view. On Android, use the permission and Ads privacy screens to confirm your choices.
- Open the provider’s privacy settings. Turn off ad personalization, contact matching, or data-sharing options that are separate from the phone’s controls.
- Request deletion where appropriate. Remove the account or submit the provider’s data-deletion request instead of assuming that uninstalling the app erases historical data.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use. This prevents that installation from continuing to access the device, while the provider’s deletion process handles information already uploaded.
Why a setting may be missing or appear ineffective
The menu has a different name
Manufacturers and operating-system releases can relocate controls. Search Settings for Tracking, Ads, Advertising ID, or Privacy. A work, school, or family-managed device may hide or lock a setting through device-management policy.

An app keeps showing advertisements
Turning off tracking or ad topics does not remove advertising from the app. It limits the specific platform mechanism selected. Google notes that ads may remain personalized depending on the settings you chose, the advertising-ID state, and the policies of the apps you use. You may also see an ad related to a topic you removed or an app you blocked.
The privacy report shows unexpected domains
Network activity identifies connections, not the legal purpose or contents of every transmission. Check the app’s disclosure and privacy policy, then decide whether the connection is compatible with the feature you use. If it is not, revoke permissions, disable the provider’s ad settings, contact the developer, or uninstall the app.
Deleting the advertising ID did not remove my profile
The advertising ID is one device-level identifier. It is not the same as an email address, an account record, purchase history, or an app’s internal identifier. Submit a deletion request to the provider for information already associated with your account.

Restore only the permission required for that feature, preferably with the narrowest option available. If the app cannot perform its basic function without unrelated access, consider replacing it rather than granting more data than you are comfortable sharing.
How to keep the changes effective
- Review permissions after major operating-system or app updates.
- Revisit Apple’s Tracking list or Android’s Ads privacy page when you install a new app that requests advertising or measurement access.
- Leave App Privacy Report enabled if you want an ongoing seven-day view of access and network activity.
- Read the provider’s account privacy settings separately from the phone’s settings; a device update cannot change an account preference automatically.
- Use deletion requests for historical data and uninstalling for future activity from the local app.
The most effective approach is layered: deny cross-company tracking where the platform offers that choice, limit sensitive permissions, inspect disclosures and activity, then use the provider’s own controls for personalization and deletion. Each layer addresses a different part of the data path, so none should be mistaken for a universal “share nothing” switch.
