Android gives you two ways to stop automatic app archiving. To protect one app, open Settings > Apps, choose the app, and switch off Manage app if unused. To stop Google Play from archiving unused apps more broadly, open the Play Store, tap your profile photo, then choose Settings > General and turn off Automatically archive apps. The exact labels and availability can vary by Android version and device.
These controls are separate: the first excludes a single app while leaving archiving available elsewhere; the second disables the Play Store’s automatic-archiving option. If an app has already been archived, its faded icon can usually reinstall it, provided the app is still available in the store and the device has enough free storage.
What Android app archiving does
Archiving is a storage-saving action that removes an app’s installed software, permissions, temporary files and notifications while keeping the app’s icon and app data. The icon appears faded so you can recognize that the app is not currently installed in full. Tapping the icon can trigger a reinstall when the app remains available through the device’s app store.
Because archiving is designed for unused apps, Android may present a per-app control and Google Play may offer a broader automatic setting. You can therefore protect one important app without changing the behavior of other unused apps, or disable the Play Store option for a wider stop.

Choose the right control

Use the per-app switch when only one or a few apps must remain ready to open. Use the Play Store switch when you do not want automatic archiving to occur as a general storage-management behavior.
Before changing the setting
- Know which app you want to protect if you are changing only one app’s behavior.
- Check whether you are looking in Android Settings or in the Play Store. They expose different controls.
- Expect menu differences. Google notes that some instructions work only on Android 15 and newer and that some functions require supported hardware. The exact device-by-device limits are not specified.
- If the app is already faded or missing its installed software, treat restoration as a separate step after changing the automatic-archiving preference.
Stop one app from being archived
This method changes the unused-app behavior for a single application. Other apps can still be archived automatically, so you retain the storage benefit elsewhere.
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps. On some devices, the list may be named App info or use a similar manufacturer-specific label.
- Select the app you want to protect.
- On the app’s information page, find Manage app if unused.
- Turn that control off.
After the switch is off, that selected app is excluded from this unused-app management action. The setting applies to the app you opened, not automatically to every app on the phone.

Do not assume the app is unprotected simply because the label is absent. Google says availability depends on Android version and supported device hardware, and the supplied instructions do not provide a complete manufacturer-by-manufacturer list. Check the phone’s Android version, look for equivalent wording on the app’s information page, and consult the device manufacturer’s support documentation if the control is not offered.
Turn off automatic archiving in Google Play
The Play Store switch is the broader option. It changes the Google Play preference rather than a single app’s setting.

- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile photo in the upper-right area.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Turn off Automatically archive apps.
This is the control to use when you want automatic archiving stopped broadly instead of protecting only one application. If the label is not present, the device or Android/Play Store configuration may not expose that option; check the Android version and the manufacturer’s guidance.
Per-app exclusion or global switch?
The two settings solve different problems. A per-app exclusion is more selective: it protects a particular app while leaving automatic archiving available for less important apps. The global Play Store switch is simpler when you want the automatic behavior disabled across your device.

Restore an app that is already archived
Changing an automatic-archiving switch does not by itself provide a replacement for reinstalling an app that is already archived. Use one of the restoration routes below.
Restore from the faded icon
- Find the app’s icon on the home screen or in the app list.
- Tap the faded icon.
- Allow the device to reinstall the app when prompted.
The faded appearance indicates that the app’s installed software has been removed while its icon and data were retained.
Restore from Android Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps and open the archived app’s information page.
- Use the available unarchive or reinstall action.
Wording varies by Android release and manufacturer, so look for an action that returns the app to its installed state.

Restore from the Play Store
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Open the app’s details page.
- Tap the option to unarchive or reinstall it.
Restoration requires the app store to be installed and the app to remain available there. If the listing has been removed or the app is no longer offered for the device, the normal reinstall route may not work.
Check storage before reinstalling
An archived app must be downloaded again. Insufficient free storage can block the reinstall even when the app’s listing is still available. Free enough space first, then retry from the faded icon, Settings or the Play Store.
What remains after archiving
Archiving is not the same as deleting every trace of an app. The installed program files, permissions, temporary files and notifications are removed. The launcher icon remains, although it is faded, and the app’s data is retained so the app can generally be restored later.
This distinction explains why an archived app may still be visible but fail to open normally: the icon and data remain, while the executable app package has been removed. Reinstalling puts the software back so the retained data can be used again, subject to the app still being available and the device having enough space.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective control
The per-app switch is not shown
Confirm that you opened the app’s page under Settings > Apps, rather than a general storage screen. If the control still does not appear, check the Android version and whether the device supports the feature. Google’s guidance specifically warns that some steps are limited to Android 15 and newer or to supported hardware; it does not publish a complete list for every manufacturer.

The Play Store switch is not shown
Open the Play Store profile menu and follow Settings > General exactly. If Automatically archive apps is absent, the option may not be available in that device or software configuration. Check the phone manufacturer’s support information and the Android version rather than changing unrelated app permissions.
The app is still shown with a faded icon
A faded icon means the app is archived, not fully installed. Tap it to start restoration, or open its App info page in Settings or its details page in the Play Store and choose the available unarchive or reinstall action.
Reinstallation fails immediately
- Verify that the Google Play Store or the relevant app store is installed.
- Confirm that the app is still listed in the store and available for the device.
- Check free storage; an archived app needs space for its software to be downloaded again.
- If the control or app listing remains unavailable, consult the device manufacturer because support varies by Android release and hardware.
The app opens but behaves unexpectedly after restoration
First confirm that the restoration completed and that the app is no longer represented only by a faded icon. Archiving retains app data, but the app still has to be reinstalled from its store listing. If the app is unavailable there, Android’s standard unarchive route cannot complete.

You want to protect a single essential app
Leave automatic archiving available globally and disable Manage app if unused only on that app’s information page. This limits the change to the app you identified while preserving the storage-saving behavior for other unused applications.
You do not want any automatic archiving
Use the Play Store path: profile photo, Settings, General, then turn off Automatically archive apps. This is the broad control intended for a general opt-out.

You changed your mind after an app was archived
Restore the app first from its faded icon, Settings or the Play Store. Then, if you want to prevent another automatic archive, apply the per-app exclusion or turn off the global Play Store option according to how broad you want the change to be.
You want to save space but keep a few apps ready
Use per-app exclusions for the apps that must remain installed and leave archiving available for the rest. This approach avoids disabling a storage feature on every app when only a small set needs protection.
Verification checklist
Use this checklist after making a change:
- For a single-app exclusion, reopen that app’s page in Settings > Apps and confirm Manage app if unused is off.
- For a global change, return to Play Store Settings > General and confirm Automatically archive apps is off.
- Look at the protected app’s icon. A faded icon means it is already archived and needs restoration.
- If restoration is required, verify that the app remains in the store and that the device has sufficient free storage.
- If any control is missing, record the Android version and device model before contacting the manufacturer.
Version and device limitations
Android’s settings are not identical across releases or manufacturers. Google’s official Android help explains that some instructions work only on Android 15 and newer and that supported hardware can be required, but it does not identify every affected menu or provide a complete manufacturer matrix. Treat the labels in this guide as the documented names to look for, not a guarantee that every phone will display them exactly.
