Android Auto can appear to “switch” music apps for three different reasons: playback may start automatically when the phone connects, a car stereo may resume a previous media session, or a voice request may be routed to a different service. The fix depends on which event you see.
For connection-triggered playback, open Android Auto in your phone’s system settings and turn off the automatic music playback option if your phone provides one. For voice-triggered changes, install and sign in to your preferred music app, then name that service in the request—for example, Play [song name] on Amazon Music. Menu names and assistant behavior vary by phone, Android Auto version, assistant, language and region.
First identify what “switching” means
Watch the exact moment the unwanted app appears. Android Auto’s media screen can change for different reasons, and changing one setting does not necessarily correct the others.

Run one test with no voice command: connect the phone and wait. If playback starts immediately, begin with the automatic-playback section. In a second test, stop playback and issue a spoken request. If the app changes only after the request, use the service-specific voice-command steps instead.

Stop music from starting when Android Auto connects
Android Auto settings are controlled from the phone, not solely from the car’s touchscreen. Google’s documented route is Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto, although manufacturers can rename, relocate or group these entries differently.
- Disconnect the car if necessary. You can browse the phone’s settings while parked. Do not attempt to change settings while driving.
- Open the phone’s Settings app. Use the system search field and enter
Android Autoif you do not see it under Connected devices. - Open the Android Auto settings page. On some phones this appears under Connection preferences; on others the label or nesting differs.
- Look for the startup or media option that automatically begins music. The wording is not identical on every phone or software version. It may refer to starting music automatically or automatic playback.
- Turn that option off, when it is present. Save or leave the page normally, then reconnect and wait without issuing a command.
- Test the result with the same connection method you normally use. Wired and wireless sessions can expose different behavior, so test the mode that produced the problem.
This change targets playback that begins merely because Android Auto connects. It does not select a permanent default service for every voice request. If a request still opens another app after automatic playback is disabled, move to the voice-routing steps below.
If you cannot find an automatic-playback switch
Use Settings search for both Android Auto and terms such as music or playback. The exact labels and availability depend on the phone maker and Android Auto version. The absence of a visible switch does not prove that your car is malfunctioning; it means your particular software combination may expose the behavior elsewhere or may let the head unit restore a media session.

Keep voice requests in the music service you want
A spoken request is a separate routing problem. Android Auto can use media apps installed on the phone, but the assistant needs an available, authenticated service to launch. Google’s Android Auto media guidance recommends having the phone app installed and signed in before starting Android Auto.

- Install the preferred music app on the phone. Android Auto cannot launch a service that is not available to the phone account.
- Open the app on the phone while parked and sign in. Complete any account or permission prompts before connecting to the car.
- Connect Android Auto and invoke the available voice assistant. The assistant may be Google Assistant or Gemini, depending on your device, rollout status and settings.
- Name the service in the request. Use the documented pattern
Play [song name] on Amazon Music, replacing the bracketed text and service with your own choices. - Check the spoken result. If the named service opens, the earlier “switch” was a routing choice rather than an automatic-playback issue.
For reliable recognition, say the song and service in one sentence. A request that only says “play my music” leaves the assistant to choose among available services. Naming a service is a documented command pattern, not a promise that every service, language, account type or assistant release will respond identically.
What to do when the preferred app is installed but still ignored
Verify the account in the app itself, not just the fact that its icon appears on the phone. A signed-out app may be visible but unable to start playback. Then repeat the request with the service name spoken explicitly. If the result differs between a phone-only request and an Android Auto request, record both results; that distinction helps identify whether the assistant or the car interface is involved.

Do not assume that changing the automatic-playback setting will make the assistant remember your preferred provider. Automatic playback controls connection behavior, while a voice request invokes assistant routing.
Google Assistant and Gemini are not interchangeable settings
Android Auto’s voice experience can be Google Assistant or Gemini. Google has described Gemini rolling out to people who upgraded from Assistant, and its media examples include YouTube Music, Spotify and other services. Availability depends on the user’s device, account, language, region, rollout and selected settings.
Because those variables differ, there is no single documented default-provider menu path that can be presented as universal for every Android phone and Android Auto combination. A setting shown in one assistant release may be absent or located elsewhere in another. Treat online instructions that promise one permanent “default music app” switch with caution unless they match your exact phone and assistant version.

How to diagnose which assistant handled the request
- Note whether the response or on-screen interface identifies Google Assistant or Gemini.
- Record the assistant setting shown on the phone at the time of the test.
- Repeat the same named-service command after any assistant change, because routing can change with the active assistant.
- Keep the phone’s language and account information with your notes if a command works in one language but not another.
This is a diagnostic distinction, not a recommendation to switch assistants. The practical control available across combinations is to keep the desired service installed and signed in and identify it in the spoken request.
When the car is resuming a previous media session
Some “switches” happen without the assistant selecting anything. A vehicle or head unit can restore the last media session when Android Auto reconnects, wakes from standby or receives a steering-wheel media command. In that case, the app shown may be the one that last owned the media session, even if your preferred app is installed.
To isolate this case, perform a controlled test:
- Stop all playback before disconnecting, while parked.
- Reconnect using the same wired or wireless method that normally triggers the change.
- Do not touch the screen or issue a voice request for several seconds.
- Record which app appears and whether audio starts by itself.
- Repeat once with a voice request that explicitly names your preferred service.
If the app appears before any request, treat it as connection or media-session behavior. If the named request opens the preferred app but the idle reconnection restores another one, you are seeing two separate events. Android’s developer media guidance tells app developers not to automatically begin playback when a car media service connects, but that guidance does not guarantee identical behavior from every existing app, vehicle or head unit.

Information to collect if the switching continues
There is no universal default-provider path established for every combination of phone, assistant, app and vehicle. A precise record is more useful than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
- Phone make and model.
- Android version.
- Android Auto version.
- Active assistant: Gemini or Google Assistant.
- Music app that you want to use.
- Music app that opens instead.
- Car or head-unit model.
- Wired or wireless connection mode.
- Exact trigger: connection, reconnect, display wake, steering-wheel control or voice request.
- The exact words used in the voice request and whether the service name was included.
- Whether the preferred app was installed, open recently and signed in before the test.
Capture the sequence rather than only the outcome. For example: “Connected wirelessly; no command; a different app appeared after five seconds,” is more actionable than “Android Auto keeps changing apps.”

Common mistakes that make the problem look worse
Confusing automatic playback with provider selection
Disabling automatic playback can stop unwanted audio at connection, but it does not tell the assistant which service to use later. Handle those as separate tests.
Testing while signed out
An app that is installed but not authenticated may not be able to satisfy a request. Sign in on the phone before starting Android Auto.
Leaving the service name out of the request
“Play my music” gives the assistant discretion. Include the service name when the destination matters.
Assuming one assistant menu applies everywhere
Assistant availability and labels vary. Instructions written for Google Assistant may not map directly to a Gemini session, and vice versa.

A repeatable test plan
- Park safely and disconnect Android Auto.
- On the phone, confirm the preferred music app is installed and signed in.
- Search Settings for Android Auto and inspect the automatic music playback option.
- Reconnect without touching the screen or speaking. Record whether playback starts and which app owns it.
- Stop playback, then request a song while naming the preferred service.
- Repeat with the other connection mode if your car supports both wired and wireless Android Auto.
- Identify whether Google Assistant or Gemini handled the request.
- Keep the complete result log with the phone, Android Auto, app and vehicle versions.
This sequence separates connection behavior, media-session restoration and assistant routing instead of changing several variables at once.
Frequently asked questions
Will turning off automatic music playback choose my preferred app?
No. It prevents or reduces playback that begins at connection when the option is available. A voice request can still open another service unless you name the service and it is installed and signed in.
Can I set one default music provider for every Android Auto phone?
Official guidance does not establish one universal default-provider path that works across all phones, regions, Android Auto versions and both Google Assistant and Gemini. Use an explicit service name in the request and document your specific software combination.

Why does Android Auto show a different app even when I said nothing?
